Even Christ did not confer upon himself the glory of becoming a high priest. Rather, he was appointed by the one who said to him:

“You are my Son;
    this day I have begotten you.”

And he says in another place:

“You are a priest forever,
    according to the order of Melchizedek.”

During the course of his earthly life, Jesus offered up prayers and petitions with loud cries and tears to the one who had the power to save him from death, and he was heard because of his godly fear.
