13 The charity of brotherhood dwell in you,

and do not ye forget hospitality; for by this some men pleased to angels, that were received to harbour [for by this some pleased to angels received to harbour].

Think ye on bound men, as ye were together bound [Be ye mindful of bound men, as ye together bound], and of travailing men, as [and] yourselves dwelling in the body.

Wedding is in all things honourable, and [the] bed unwemmed [and the bed undefouled]; for God shall deem fornicators and adulterers.

Be your manners without covetousness, satisfied with present things [satisfied with things being]; for he said, I shall not leave thee, neither forsake,

so that we say trustily [so that we trustily say], The Lord is an helper to me; I shall not dread, what a man shall do to me.

Have ye mind of your sovereigns, that have spoken to you the word of God; of whom behold ye the going out of living, and follow ye the faith of them,[a]

Jesus Christ, yesterday, and to day, he is also into worlds.

Do not ye be led away with diverse and strange teachings. For it is best to stable the heart with grace, not with meats, which profited not to men wandering in them.

10 We have an altar, of which they that serve to the tabernacle, have not power [have not power, or leave,] to eat.

11 For of which beasts the blood is borne in for sin into holy things by the bishop, the bodies of them be burnt without the castles.

12 For which thing Jesus, that he should hallow the people by his blood, suffered without the gate.

13 Therefore go we out to him without the castles, bearing his reproof.[b]

14 For we have not here a city dwelling, but we seek a city to coming.[c]

15 Therefore by him offer we a sacrifice of praising evermore to God [By him therefore offer we an host of praising allway to God], that is to say, the fruit of lips acknowledging to his name.

16 And do not ye forget well-doing, and communing; for by such sacrifices God is well served[d].

17 Obey ye to your sovereigns, and be ye subject to them; for they perfectly wake[e], as to yielding reason for your souls, that they do this thing with joy, and not sorrowing; for this thing speedeth not to you.

18 Pray ye for us, and we trust that we have good conscience in all things, willing to live well.

19 Moreover I beseech you to do [this thing], that I be restored the sooner to you.

20 And God of peace, that led out from death the great shepherd of sheep, in the blood of [the] everlasting testament, our Lord Jesus Christ,[f]

21 shape you in all good thing, that ye do the will of him; and he do in you that thing that shall please before him, by Jesus Christ[g], to whom be glory into worlds of worlds. Amen.

22 And, brethren, I pray you, that ye suffer a word of solace; for by full few things I have written to you [and soothly by few I have written to you].

23 Know ye our brother Timothy, that is sent forth, with whom if he shall come more hastily, I shall see you.

24 Greet ye well all your sovereigns, and all holy men [Greet well all your provosts, and all saints]. The brethren of Italy greet you well.

25 The grace of God be with you all. Amen. [Grace with you. Amen.]

  3. Hebrews 13:14 Soothly we have not here a dwelling city, but we seek a city to come.
  4. Hebrews 13:16 forsooth by such hosts, God is well served, or pleased/or well satisfied
  5. Hebrews 13:17 Obey ye to your provosts, or prelates, and under-lay ye to them; they forsooth busily wake
  6. Hebrews 13:20 Soothly God of peace, that led out from dead our Lord Jesus Christ, the great shepherd of sheep, in the blood of the everlasting testament,
  7. Hebrews 13:21 shape, or make you able, in all good work, that ye do his will; he doing in you that thing that shall please before him, by Jesus Christ

He exhorts us to love, to be ready to take people in, to be thoughtful of persons in adversity, to maintain wedlock, to avoid covetousness, to make much of those who preach God’s word, to beware of other teaching, to be content to suffer rebuke with Christ, to be thankful to God, and to be obedient to those who have the oversight of us.

13 Let brotherly love continue. Be not forgetful to lodge strangers, for by so doing some have received angels into their houses unawares. Remember those who are in bonds, even as though you were bound with them. Be mindful of those who are in adversity, as persons who are yourselves also yet in your bodies.

Let wedlock be had in honour in all points, and let the bedchamber be undefiled. For whorekeepers and adulterers God will judge.

Let your living be without covetousness, and be content with what you have already. For he has truly said: I will not fail you nor forsake you. Therefore we may boldly say: The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man does to me.

Remember those who have the oversight of you, who have declared to you the word of God. See that you look upon the way they live out their life, and follow their faith.

Jesus Christ continues the same yesterday and today and forever. Do not be carried about with other and different teaching. For it is a good thing that the heart be established with grace, and not with foods which have not profited those who have been occupied in them.

10 We have an altar from which those who serve in the tabernacle may not eat. 11 For the bodies of those beasts whose blood is brought into the holy place by the high priest to purge sin, are burnt outside the tents. 12 Therefore Jesus, to sanctify the people with his own blood, suffered outside the gate.

13 Let us go forth therefore out of the tents and suffer rebuke with him. 14 For here have we no continuing city, but we seek one to come. 15 For by him we offer the sacrifice of laud always to God; that is to say, the fruit of those lips that confess his name.

16 To do good and to distribute to the poor, do not forget. For with such sacrifices, God is pleased.

17 Obey those who have the oversight of you, and submit yourselves to them, for they watch for your souls even as those who must give accounts. Let them do it with joy, and not with grief. For that is an unprofitable thing for you.

18 Pray for us. We have confidence, because we have a good conscience in all things, and desire to live righteously. 19 I ask you therefore even more so to pray that I may be restored to you quickly.

20 May the God of peace, who brought back again from death our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting testament, 21 make you perfect in all good works to do his will, working in you that which is pleasing in his sight through Jesus Christ – to whom be glory forever while the world endures. Amen.

22 I beseech you brethren, submit patiently to the words of exhortation. For we have written to you in few words.

23 Acknowledge the brother Timothy, whom we have sent from us, with whom (if he comes shortly) I will see you.

24 Greet those who have the oversight of you, and all the saints. The people of Italy send you greetings.

25 Grace be with you all.

Sent from Italy by
the hand of
Timothy.

13 1 He giveth good lessons not only for manners, 7 but also for doctrine.

Let (A)[a]brotherly love continue.

(B)Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have (C)received Angels into their houses unawares.

Remember them that are in bonds, as though ye were bound with them: and them that are in affliction, as [b]if ye were also afflicted in the body.

[c]Marriage is honorable among all, and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge.

[d]Let your conversation be without covetousness, and be content with those things that ye have, for [e]he hath said,

(D)I will not fail thee, neither forsake thee:

So that we may boldly say, (E)The Lord is mine helper, neither will I fear what [f]man can do unto me.

[g]Remember them which have the oversight of you, which have declared unto you the word of God: whose faith follow, considering what hath been the end of their conversation. [h]Jesus Christ yesterday, and today, the same also is forever.

Be not carried about with divers and strange doctrines: [i]for it is a good thing that the heart be stablished with grace, and not with [j]meats, which have not profited them that have been [k]occupied therein.

10 [l]We have an [m]altar, whereof they have no authority to eat, which [n]serve in the Tabernacle.

11 (F)For the bodies of those beasts whose blood is brought into the holy place by the high Priest for sin, are burnt without the camp.

12 Therefore even Jesus, that he might sanctify the people with his own blood, suffered without the gate.

13 [o]Let us go forth to him therefore out of the camp, bearing his reproach.

14 (G)For here have we no continuing city: but we seek one to come.

15 [p]Let us therefore by him offer the sacrifice of praise always to God, that is, the (H)fruit of the lips, which confess his Name.

16 To do good, and to distribute forget not: for with such sacrifices God is pleased.

17 [q]Obey them that have the oversight of you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give accounts, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you.

18 [r]Pray for us, for we are assured that we have a good conscience in all things, desiring to live honestly.

19 And I desire you somewhat the more earnestly, that ye so do, that I may be restored to you more quickly.

20 The God of peace that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting Covenant,

21 Make you [s]perfect in all good works, to do his will, [t]working in you that which is pleasant in his sight through Jesus Christ, to whom be praise forever and ever, Amen.

22 I beseech you also, brethren, suffer the words of exhortation: for I have written unto you in few words.

23 Know that our brother Timothy is delivered, with whom (if he come shortly) I will see you.

24 Salute all them that have the oversight of you, and all the Saints. They of Italy salute you.

25 Grace be with you all, Amen.

  1. Hebrews 13:1 He cometh to the second table, the sum whereof is charity, especially toward strangers and such as are afflicted.
  2. Hebrews 13:3 Be so much touched, as if their misery were yours.
  3. Hebrews 13:4 He commendeth chaste matrimony in all sorts of men, and threateneth utter destruction from God, against whoremongers and adulterers.
  4. Hebrews 13:5 Covetousness is condemned, against which is set a contented mind with that which the Lord hath given.
  5. Hebrews 13:5 Even the Lord himself.
  6. Hebrews 13:7 He setteth man against God.
  7. Hebrews 13:8 We have to set before us the examples of valiant Captains, whom we ought diligently to follow.
  8. Hebrews 13:8 He repeateth the sum of the doctrine, to wit, the only ground of all precepts of manners, and that is this: That we ought to quiet and content ourselves in Christ only: for there was yet never any man saved without the knowledge of him, neither is at this day saved, neither shall be saved hereafter.
  9. Hebrews 13:9 He toucheth them which mixed an external worship, and especially the difference of meats, with the Gospel, which doctrine he plainly condemneth as clean repugnant to the benefit of Christ.
  10. Hebrews 13:9 By this one kind which concerneth the difference of clean and unclean meats, we have to understand all the ceremonial worship.
  11. Hebrews 13:9 Which observed the difference of them superstitiously.
  12. Hebrews 13:10 He refuteth their error by an apt and fit comparison. They which in times past served the Tabernacle, did not eat of the sacrifices whose blood was brought for sin into the holy place by the high Priest. Moreover these sacrifices did represent Christ our offering. Therefore they cannot be partakers of him which serve the Tabernacle, that is, such as stand in the service of the Law: but let not us be ashamed to follow him out of Jerusalem, from whence he was cast out and suffered: for in this also Christ, who is the truth, answereth that figure, in that he suffered without the gate.
  13. Hebrews 13:10 By the Altar, he meaneth the offering.
  14. Hebrews 13:10 Whereof they cannot be partakers which stubbornly retain the rites of the Law.
  15. Hebrews 13:13 He goeth on further in this comparison, and showeth that this also signified unto us, that the godly followers of Christ must as it were go out of the world, bearing his cross.
  16. Hebrews 13:15 Now that those corporal sacrifices are taken away, he teacheth us that the true sacrifices of confession remain, which consist partly in giving of thanks, and partly in liberality, with which sacrifices indeed God is now delighted.
  17. Hebrews 13:17 We must obey the warnings and admonitions of our Ministers and Elders, which watch for the salvation of the souls which are committed unto them.
  18. Hebrews 13:18 The last part of this Epistle, wherein he commendeth his ministry to the Hebrews, and wisheth them continuance and increase of graces from the Lord: and excuseth himself in that he hath used but few words to comfort them, having spent the Epistle in disputing: and saluteth certain brethren familiarly and friendly.
  19. Hebrews 13:21 Make you fit or meet.
  20. Hebrews 13:21 Hence cometh that saying of the Fathers, that God crowneth his works in us.
