and is more excellent than the angels, inasmuch as he has by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they.

For to which of the angels did he say at any time: You are my Son; this day I have begotten you? And again: I will be his Father, and he shall be my Son. And again, when he brings the first begotten Son into the world, he says: And all the angels of God shall worship him.

And of the angels he says: He makes his angels spirits, and his ministers flames of fire. But to the Son he says: O God, your seat shall be for ever and ever. The sceptre of your kingdom is a right sceptre. You have loved righteousness and hated iniquity; therefore God, who is your God, has anointed you with the oil of gladness above your fellows. 10 And: You, Lord, in the beginning, laid the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the works of your hands. 11 They shall perish, but you shall endure. They all will grow old as does a garment, 12 and as a vesture you will change them, and they will be changed. But you are always, and your years shall not fail. 

13 To which of the angels did he say at any time: Sit on my right hand, till I make your enemies your footstool? 14 Are they not all ministering spirits, sent to minister for the sakes of those who will be heirs of salvation?

So he became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs.(A)

The Son Superior to Angels

For to which of the angels did God ever say,

“You are my Son;
    today I have become your Father”[a]?(B)

Or again,

“I will be his Father,
    and he will be my Son”[b]?(C)

And again, when God brings his firstborn(D) into the world,(E) he says,

“Let all God’s angels worship him.”[c](F)

In speaking of the angels he says,

“He makes his angels spirits,
    and his servants flames of fire.”[d](G)

But about the Son he says,

“Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever;(H)
    a scepter of justice will be the scepter of your kingdom.
You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness;
    therefore God, your God, has set you above your companions(I)
    by anointing you with the oil(J) of joy.”[e](K)

10 He also says,

“In the beginning, Lord, you laid the foundations of the earth,
    and the heavens are the work of your hands.(L)
11 They will perish, but you remain;
    they will all wear out like a garment.(M)
12 You will roll them up like a robe;
    like a garment they will be changed.
But you remain the same,(N)
    and your years will never end.”[f](O)

13 To which of the angels did God ever say,

“Sit at my right hand(P)
    until I make your enemies
    a footstool(Q) for your feet”[g]?(R)

14 Are not all angels ministering spirits(S) sent to serve those who will inherit(T) salvation?(U)
