Descanso prometido ao povo de Deus
4 Assim, uma vez que permanece a promessa de que entraremos no descanso de Deus, devemos ter cuidado para que nenhum de vocês pense que falhou. 2 Porque essas boas-novas também nos foram anunciadas, como a eles, mas a mensagem de nada lhes valeu, pois não a receberam com fé e não se uniram àqueles que ouviram.[a] 3 Pois nós, os que cremos, entramos em seu descanso. Quanto aos demais, Deus disse:
“Assim, jurei em minha ira:
‘Jamais entrarão em meu descanso’”,[b]
embora suas obras estejam prontas desde a criação do mundo. 4 Sabemos que estão prontas por causa da passagem que menciona o sétimo dia: “No sétimo dia, Deus descansou de todo o seu trabalho”.[c] 5 Mas, em outra passagem, Deus diz: “Jamais entrarão em meu descanso”.[d]
6 Portanto, o descanso está disponível para que alguns entrem nele, mas os primeiros que ouviram essas boas-novas não entraram por causa de sua desobediência. 7 Por isso Deus estabeleceu outra ocasião para que entrem em seu descanso, e essa ocasião é “hoje”. Ele anunciou isso por meio de Davi muito tempo depois, nas palavras já citadas:
“Hoje, se ouvirem sua voz,
não endureçam o coração”.[e]
8 Se Josué lhes tivesse dado descanso, Deus não teria falado de outro dia de descanso por vir. 9 Logo, ainda há um descanso definitivo[f] à espera do povo de Deus. 10 Porque todos que entraram no descanso de Deus descansam de seu trabalho, como Deus o fez após a criação do mundo. 11 Portanto, esforcemo-nos para entrar nesse descanso. Mas, se desobedecermos, como no exemplo citado, cairemos.
12 Pois a palavra de Deus é viva e poderosa. É mais cortante que qualquer espada de dois gumes, penetrando entre a alma e o espírito, entre a junta e a medula, e trazendo à luz até os pensamentos e desejos mais íntimos. 13 Nada, em toda a criação, está escondido de Deus. Tudo está descoberto e exposto diante de seus olhos, e é a ele que prestamos contas.

14 Visto, portanto, que temos um grande Sumo Sacerdote que entrou no céu, Jesus, o Filho de Deus, apeguemo-nos firmemente àquilo em que cremos. 15 Nosso Sumo Sacerdote entende nossas fraquezas, pois enfrentou as mesmas tentações que nós, mas nunca pecou. 16 Assim, aproximemo-nos com toda confiança do trono da graça, onde receberemos misericórdia e encontraremos graça para nos ajudar quando for preciso.

4 That’s why, as long as that promise of entering God’s rest remains open to us, we should be careful that none of us seem to fall short ourselves. 2 Those people in the wilderness heard God’s good news, just as we have heard it, but the message they heard didn’t do them any good since it wasn’t combined with faith. 3 We who believe are entering into salvation’s rest, as He said,
That is why I swore in anger
they would never enter salvation’s rest,[a]
even though God’s works were finished from the very creation of the world. 4 (For didn’t God say that on the seventh day of creation He rested from all His works?[b] 5 And doesn’t God say in the psalm that they would never enter into salvation’s rest?[c])
There is much discussion of “rest” in what we are calling the First Testament of Scripture. God rests on the seventh day after creation. In the Ten Commandments God commands His people to remember the Sabbath day, keep it holy, and do no work. By letting go of daily work, they declared their absolute dependence on God to meet their needs. We do not live by the work of our hands, but by the bread and Word that God supplies.
But a greater rest is yet to come when we will be released from all suffering, and when we will inherit the earth. Jesus embodies this greater rest that still awaits the people of God, a people fashioned through obedience and faith. If some of us fail to enter that rest, it is because we fail to answer the call.
6 So if God prepared a place of rest, and those who were given the good news didn’t enter because they chose disobedience over faith, then it remains open for us to enter. 7 Once again, God has fixed a day; and that day is “today,” as David said so much later when he wrote in the psalm quoted earlier:
Today, if you listen to His voice,
Don’t harden your hearts.[d]
8 Now if Joshua had been able to lead those who followed him into God’s rest, would God then have spoken this way? 9 There still remains a place of rest, a true Sabbath, for the people of God 10 because those who enter into salvation’s rest lay down their labors in the same way that God entered into a Sabbath rest from His.
11 So let us move forward to enter this rest, so that none of us fall into the kind of faithless disobedience that prevented them from entering. 12 The word of God, you see, is alive and moving; sharper than a double-edged sword; piercing the divide between soul and spirit, joints and marrow; able to judge the thoughts and will of the heart. 13 No creature can hide from God: God sees all. Everyone and everything is exposed, opened for His inspection; and He’s the One we will have to explain ourselves to.
By God’s word, everything finds a rhythm, a place. It fills, empowers, enlivens, and redeems us. But it also divides and destroys. It pierces and exposes our disobedience and unfaithfulness.
14 Since we have a great High Priest, Jesus, the Son of God who has passed through the heavens from death into new life with God, let us hold tightly to our faith. 15 For Jesus is not some high priest who has no sympathy for our weaknesses and flaws. He has already been tested in every way that we are tested; but He emerged victorious, without failing God. 16 So let us step boldly to the throne of grace, where we can find mercy and grace to help when we need it most.

A Sabbath-Rest for the People of God
4 Therefore, since the promise of entering his rest still stands, let us be careful that none of you be found to have fallen short of it.(A) 2 For we also have had the good news proclaimed to us, just as they did; but the message they heard was of no value to them, because they did not share the faith of those who obeyed.[a](B) 3 Now we who have believed enter that rest, just as God has said,
And yet his works have been finished since the creation of the world. 4 For somewhere he has spoken about the seventh day in these words: “On the seventh day God rested from all his works.”[c](D) 5 And again in the passage above he says, “They shall never enter my rest.”(E)
6 Therefore since it still remains for some to enter that rest, and since those who formerly had the good news proclaimed to them did not go in because of their disobedience,(F) 7 God again set a certain day, calling it “Today.” This he did when a long time later he spoke through David, as in the passage already quoted:
8 For if Joshua had given them rest,(H) God would not have spoken(I) later about another day. 9 There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; 10 for anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from their works,[e](J) just as God did from his.(K) 11 Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will perish by following their example of disobedience.(L)
12 For the word of God(M) is alive(N) and active.(O) Sharper than any double-edged sword,(P) it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.(Q) 13 Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight.(R) Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.
Jesus the Great High Priest
14 Therefore, since we have a great high priest(S) who has ascended into heaven,[f](T) Jesus the Son of God,(U) let us hold firmly to the faith we profess.(V) 15 For we do not have a high priest(W) who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are(X)—yet he did not sin.(Y) 16 Let us then approach(Z) God’s throne of grace with confidence,(AA) so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

The Promise of Rest
4 Therefore, since a promise remains of entering His rest, (A)let us fear lest any of you seem to have come short of it. 2 For indeed the gospel was preached to us as well as to them; but the word which they heard did not profit them, [a]not being mixed with faith in those who heard it. 3 For we who have believed do enter that rest, as He has said:
(B)“So I swore in My wrath,
‘They shall not enter My rest,’ ”
although the works were finished from the foundation of the world. 4 For He has spoken in a certain place of the seventh day in this way: (C)“And God rested on the seventh day from all His works”; 5 and again in this place: (D)“They shall not enter My rest.”
6 Since therefore it remains that some must enter it, and those to whom it was first preached did not enter because of disobedience, 7 again He designates a certain day, saying in David, “Today,” after such a long time, as it has been said:
(E)“Today, if you will hear His voice,
Do not harden your hearts.”
8 For if [b]Joshua had (F)given them rest, then He would not afterward have spoken of another day. 9 There remains therefore a rest for the people of God. 10 For he who has entered His rest has himself also ceased from his works as God did from His.
The Word Discovers Our Condition
11 (G)Let us therefore be diligent to enter that rest, lest anyone fall according to the same example of disobedience. 12 For the word of God is (H)living and powerful, and (I)sharper than any (J)two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is (K)a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. 13 (L)And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are (M)naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.
Our Compassionate High Priest
14 Seeing then that we have a great (N)High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, (O)let us hold fast our confession. 15 For (P)we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but (Q)was in all points tempted as we are, (R)yet without sin. 16 (S)Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
