¹⁷ For you know that ^(A)afterward, when he desired to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no chance to repent, though he sought it with tears.

¹¹ Afterward the other virgins came also, saying, ^(A)‘Lord, lord, open to us.’ ^12 (B)But he answered, ‘Truly, I say to you, ^(C)I do not know you.’

²⁶ For ^(A)if we go on sinning deliberately ^(B)after receiving the knowledge of the truth, ^(C)there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, ^27 (D)but a fearful expectation of judgment, and ^(E)a fury of fire that will consume the adversaries. ^28 (F)Anyone who has set aside the law of Moses dies without mercy ^(G)on the evidence of two or three witnesses. ²⁹ How much worse punishment, do you think, will be deserved by the one ^(H)who has trampled underfoot the Son of God, and has profaned ^(I)the blood of the covenant ^(J)by which he was sanctified, and has ^(K)outraged the Spirit of grace?

⁸ But ^(A)if it bears thorns and thistles, it is worthless and near to being cursed, ^(B)and its end is to be burned.

^24 (A)“Strive ^(B)to enter through the narrow door. For many, I tell you, will seek to enter and will not be able. ^25 (C)When once the master of the house has risen and shut the door, and you begin to stand outside and to knock at the door, saying, ^(D)‘Lord, open to us,’ then he will answer you, ^(E)‘I do not know where you come from.’ ²⁶ Then you will begin to say, ^(F)‘We ate and drank in your presence, and you taught in our streets.’ ²⁷ But he will say, ‘I tell you, ^(G)I do not know where you come from. ^(H)Depart from me, all you workers of evil!’

^23 (A)And then will I declare to them, ‘I ^(B)never knew you; ^(C)depart from me, ^(D)you workers of lawlessness.’

³⁰ As soon as Isaac had finished blessing Jacob, when Jacob had scarcely gone out from the presence of Isaac his father, Esau his brother came in from his hunting. ³¹ He also prepared delicious food and brought it to his father. And he said to his father, “Let my father arise and eat of his son's game, that you may bless me.” ³² His father Isaac said to him, “Who are you?” He answered, “I am your son, your firstborn, Esau.” ³³ Then Isaac trembled very violently and said, “Who was it then that hunted game and brought it to me, and I ate it all before you came, and I have blessed him? Yes, and he shall be blessed.” ³⁴ As soon as Esau heard the words of his father, ^(A)he cried out with an exceedingly great and bitter cry and said to his father, “Bless me, even me also, O my father!” ³⁵ But he said, “Your brother came deceitfully, and he has taken away your blessing.” ³⁶ Esau said, ^(B)“Is he not rightly named Jacob?^[a] For he has cheated me these two times. ^(C)He took away my birthright, and behold, now he has taken away my blessing.” Then he said, “Have you not reserved a blessing for me?” ³⁷ Isaac answered and said to Esau, “Behold, ^(D)I have made him lord over you, and all his brothers I have given to him for servants, and ^(E)with grain and wine I have sustained him. What then can I do for you, my son?” ³⁸ Esau said to his father, “Have you but one blessing, my father? Bless me, even me also, O my father.” And ^(F)Esau lifted up his voice and wept.

³⁹ Then Isaac his father answered and said to him:

⁴¹ Now Esau ^(J)hated Jacob because of the blessing with which his father had blessed him, and Esau said to himself, ^(K)“The days of mourning for my father are approaching; ^(L)then I will kill my brother Jacob.”
