⁹ By faith he went to live in ^(A)the land of promise, as in a foreign land, ^(B)living in tents ^(C)with Isaac and Jacob, heirs with him of the same promise.

⁸ From there he moved to the hill country on the east of ^(A)Bethel and pitched his tent, with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east. And there he built an altar to the Lord and called upon the name of the Lord.

¹⁸ So Abram moved his tent and came and ^(A)settled by the ^(B)oaks^[a] of Mamre, which ^(C)are at Hebron, and there he built an altar to the Lord.

¹⁷ So when God desired to show more convincingly to ^(A)the heirs of the promise ^(B)the unchangeable character of his purpose, ^(C)he guaranteed it with an oath,

⁹ They said to him, “Where is Sarah your wife?” And he said, “She is ^(A)in the tent.”

³ And he journeyed on from the Negeb as far as Bethel to the place where his tent had been at the beginning, between Bethel and Ai,

⁵ Yet he gave him no inheritance in it, not even a foot's length, but promised ^(A)to give it to him as a possession and to his offspring after him, ^(B)though he had no child. ⁶ And God spoke to this effect—that ^(C)his offspring would ^(D)be sojourners in a land belonging to others, who would enslave them and afflict them ^(E)four hundred years.

³ And Jacob said to Joseph, ^(A)“God Almighty^[a] appeared to me at ^(B)Luz in the land of Canaan and blessed me, ⁴ and said to me, ‘Behold, I will make you fruitful and multiply you, and I will make of you a company of peoples and will give this land to your offspring after you ^(C)for an everlasting possession.’

²⁷ And Jacob came to his father Isaac at ^(A)Mamre, or ^(B)Kiriath-arba (that is, Hebron), where Abraham and Isaac had sojourned.

^3 (A)Sojourn in this land, and ^(B)I will be with you and will bless you, for ^(C)to you and to your offspring I will give all these lands, and I will establish ^(D)the oath that I swore to Abraham your father. ^4 (E)I will multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven and will give to your offspring all these lands. And ^(F)in your offspring all the nations of the earth shall be blessed,
