2 I will stand at my watch
and station myself on the ramparts;
I will look to see what he will say to me,
and what answer I am to give to this complaint.[a]
The Lord’s answer
2 Then the Lord replied:
‘Write down the revelation
and make it plain on tablets
so that a herald[b] may run with it.
3 For the revelation awaits an appointed time;
it speaks of the end
and will not prove false.
Though it linger, wait for it;
it[c] will certainly come
and will not delay.
4 ‘See, the enemy is puffed up;
his desires are not upright –
but the righteous person will live by his faithfulness[d] –
5 indeed, wine betrays him;
he is arrogant and never at rest.
Because he is as greedy as the grave
and like death is never satisfied,
he gathers to himself all the nations
and takes captive all the peoples.
6 ‘Will not all of them taunt him with ridicule and scorn, saying,
‘“Woe to him who piles up stolen goods
and makes himself wealthy by extortion!
How long must this go on?”
7 Will not your creditors suddenly arise?
Will they not wake up and make you tremble?
Then you will become their prey.
8 Because you have plundered many nations,
the peoples who are left will plunder you.
For you have shed human blood;
you have destroyed lands and cities and everyone in them.
9 ‘Woe to him who builds his house by unjust gain,
setting his nest on high
to escape the clutches of ruin!
10 You have plotted the ruin of many peoples,
shaming your own house and forfeiting your life.
11 The stones of the wall will cry out,
and the beams of the woodwork will echo it.
12 ‘Woe to him who builds a city with bloodshed
and establishes a town by injustice!
13 Has not the Lord Almighty determined
that the people’s labour is only fuel for the fire,
that the nations exhaust themselves for nothing?
14 For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord
as the waters cover the sea.
15 ‘Woe to him who gives drink to his neighbours,
pouring it from the wineskin till they are drunk,
so that he can gaze on their naked bodies!
16 You will be filled with shame instead of glory.
Now it is your turn! Drink and let your nakedness be exposed![e]
The cup from the Lord’s right hand is coming round to you,
and disgrace will cover your glory.
17 The violence you have done to Lebanon will overwhelm you,
and your destruction of animals will terrify you.
For you have shed human blood;
you have destroyed lands and cities and everyone in them.
18 ‘Of what value is an idol carved by a craftsman?
Or an image that teaches lies?
For the one who makes it trusts in his own creation;
he makes idols that cannot speak.
19 Woe to him who says to wood, “Come to life!”
Or to lifeless stone, “Wake up!”
Can it give guidance?
It is covered with gold and silver;
there is no breath in it.’
20 The Lord is in his holy temple;
let all the earth be silent before him.

Habakkuk Waits for the Lord’s Answer
2 I will stand at my guard post.
I will station myself on the wall.
I will watch to see what he will say to me
and what answer I will get to my complaint.
The Lord’s Answer
2 Then Yahweh answered me,
“Write the vision.
Make it clear on tablets
so that anyone can read it quickly.
3 The vision will still happen at the appointed time.
It hurries toward its goal.
It won’t be a lie.
If it’s delayed, wait for it.
It will certainly happen.
It won’t be late.
4 “Look at the proud person. He is not right in himself.
But the righteous person will live because of his faithfulness.[a]
5 Also because wine is treacherous
he is arrogant and never rests.
He has a large appetite like the grave.
He is like death—never satisfied.
He gathers all the nations to himself.
He collects all the people to himself.
6 Won’t all of them ridicule him,
directing clever sayings and riddles at him, like:
“‘How horrible it will be for the one who makes himself rich
with what is not his own
and makes himself wealthy on loans.
How long will this go on?’
7 Won’t your creditors suddenly rise up
and those who are going to shake you wake up?
Then you will become their prize.
8 You have looted many nations.
All the rest of the people will loot you
because of the slaughter and violence done
to lands, cities, and all their inhabitants.
9 “‘How horrible it will be for the one who uses violence
to get things for his own household
in order to set his nest up high
and save himself from disaster.’
10 You have planned disgrace for your household
by cutting off many people and forfeiting your own life.
11 A stone in the wall will cry out.
A beam in the roof will answer it.
12 “‘How horrible it will be for the one who builds a city by slaughter
and founds a town by crime.’
13 Isn’t it from Yahweh Tsebaoth
that people grow tired only to feed the flames
and nations exhaust themselves for nothing?
14 But the earth will be filled with the knowledge of Yahweh’s glory
like the water covers the sea.
15 “‘How horrible it will be for the one who makes his neighbor drink
from the bowl of God’s rage,
making him drunk in order to stare at his nakedness.’
16 You are filled with disgrace rather than glory.
Drink! Yes you! And expose yourself as godless.
The cup in Yahweh’s right hand will come around to you,
and disgrace will cover your glory.
17 The violence done to Lebanon will overwhelm you,
and the destruction done to the animals will terrify you
because of the slaughter and violence done
to lands, cities, and all their inhabitants.
18 “What benefit is there in a carved idol
when its maker has carved it?
What benefit is there in a molded statue, a teacher of lies,
when its maker has molded it?
The one who formed it trusts himself
to make worthless idols that cannot speak.
19 ‘How horrible it will be for the one
who says to a piece of wood, “Wake up!”
and to a stone that cannot talk, “Get up!” ’
Can that thing teach anyone?
Just look at it!
It’s covered with gold and silver,
but there’s absolutely no life in it.”
20 Yahweh is in his holy temple.
All the earth should be silent in his presence.

Kwogera ku by’enkomerero
ate si kwa bulimba.
Bwe kunaaba ng’okuluddewo, mukulindirire,
kujja kutuukirira, tekugya kulwa.
4 (D)“Laba oyo ow’emmeeme eteri nnongoofu wa kugwa,
naye omutuukirivu aliba mulamu olw’obwesigwa bwe.”

Ate olwokubanga gwa mululu ng’emagombe, mu butakkuta gufaanana okufa.
Era okufaanana ng’olumbe, tegukkuta,
amawanga gonna gugeekuŋŋanyizaako
ne gugafuula abasibe.
6 (F)“Bano bonna si be balimugererako engero bamusekerere nga bagamba nti,
“ ‘Zimusanze oyo eyeyongeza ebitali bibye!
Oyo eyeetuumako obugagga obuva mu nguzi!’
7 (G)Abakubanja tebalikuyimukirako nga tomanyiridde,
era tebalizuukuka ne bakweraliikiriza?
Oliba togudde mu mikono gyabwe?
8 (H)Kubanga onyaze amawanga mangi,
abantu abasigaddewo balikunyaga;
Oyiye omusaayi gw’abantu,
n’oyonoona ensi n’ebibuga n’abantu bonna ababibeeramu.”
9 (I)Zimusanze oyo azimbira amaka ge ku bikolwa ebibi,
azimba ekisu kye waggulu,
okwekuuma obutatuukwako kabi!
10 (J)Wategeka okuzikirira kw’abantu bangi,
n’oswaza ennyumba yo ne weefiiriza obulamu bwo.
11 (K)Amayinja g’oku bbugwe galikaaba,
n’emikiikiro gy’ebibajje girikyasanguza.
12 (L)Zimusanze oyo azimba ekibuga n’omusaayi,
atandika ekibuga n’obutali butuukirivu.
13 (M)Tekyategekebwa Mukama ow’Eggye
nti okutegana kw’abantu nku buku za muliro,
n’amawanga geemalamu ensa olw’ebintu ebitaliimu?
14 (N)Kubanga ensi erijjula okumanya ekitiibwa kya Mukama,
ng’amazzi bwe ganjaala ku nnyanja.
15 Zimusanze oyo awa baliraanwa be ekitamiiza
n’akibafukira okuva mu kita n’abawa banywe okutuusa lwe batamiira
asobole okutunuulira ensonyi zaabwe!
16 (O)Olijjuzibwa ensonyi mu kifo ky’ekitiibwa.
Naawe olinywa n’oswala.
Ekikompe eky’omu mukono gwa Mukama ogwa ddyo kirikyusibwa kidde gy’oli,
n’ensonyi ez’obuwemu zisaanikire ekitiibwa kyo.
17 (P)Ebikolwa eby’obukambwe bye watuusa ku Lebanooni,
n’okutta ensolo, birikutiisa.
Osse abantu
n’ozikkiriza ensi n’ebibuga n’abantu ababibeeramu.
18 (Q)“Ekifaananyi ekyole kigasa ki? Anti kibajje bubazzi.
Oba ekifaananyi eky’ekyuma, ekisomesa obulimba?
Kubanga omuweesi yeesiga mirimu gya mikono gye
nga akola ebifaananyi ebitayogera!
19 (R)Zimusanze oyo agamba omuti nti, ‘Lamuka;’
agamba ejjinja nti, ‘Golokoka!’
Kino kisobola okuluŋŋamya?
Kibikiddwa zaabu ne ffeeza,
so tekiriimu bulamu n’akatono.
20 (S)Naye Mukama ali mu yeekaalu ye entukuvu:
ensi zonna zisiriikirire mu maaso ge.”
