Ang Panalangin ni Habakuk
3 Panalangin ni propeta Habakuk ayon sa Shigionot.
2 O Panginoon, narinig ko ang tungkol sa iyo
at ako'y natatakot.
O Panginoon, buhayin mong muli ang iyong mga gawa sa gitna ng mga taon.
Sa gitna ng mga taon ay ipaalam mo iyon,
sa kapootan ay alalahanin mo ang kaawaan.
3 Ang Diyos ay dumating mula sa Teman,
at ang Banal mula sa Bundok ng Paran. Selah
Ang kanyang kaluwalhatia'y tumakip sa mga langit,
at ang lupa'y punô ng kanyang kapurihan.
4 Ang kanyang ningning ay parang liwanag;
may mga sinag na nagliliwanag mula sa kanyang kamay;
at doo'y ikinubli niya ang kanyang kapangyarihan.
5 Sa unahan niya'y nagpapauna ang peste,
at ang salot ay malapit na sumusunod.
6 Siya'y tumayo at sinukat ang lupa.
Siya'y tumingin at niliglig ang mga bansa;
at ang mga walang hanggang bundok ay nangalat;
ang mga burol na walang hanggan ay nagsiyukod.
Ang kanyang mga pamamaraan ay walang hanggan.
7 Nakita ko ang mga tolda sa Cusan na nasa pagdadalamhati.
Ang mga tabing ng lupain ng Midian ay nanginig.
8 Ang iyo bang poot ay laban sa mga ilog, O Panginoon?
Ang iyo bang galit ay laban sa mga ilog,
O ang iyo bang poot ay laban sa dagat,
kapag ikaw ay sumasakay sa iyong mga kabayo,
sa iyong karwahe ng kaligtasan?
9 Hubad na nilantad mo ang iyong pana,
ayon sa panunumpa na tungkol sa iyong salita. Selah
Iyong nilagyan ng mga ilog ang lupa.
10 Nakita ka ng mga bundok at ang mga ito'y nanginig;
ang rumaragasang tubig ay dumaan,
ibinigay ng kalaliman ang kanyang tinig,
at itinaas nito ang kanyang mga kamay.
11 Ang araw at buwan ay tumigil sa kanilang mataas na lugar,
sa liwanag ng iyong mga palaso sila'y umalis,
sa kislap ng iyong makinang na sibat.
12 Ikaw ay lumakad na may galit sa mga lupain,
iyong tinapakan ang mga bansa sa galit.
13 Ikaw ay lumabas upang iligtas ang iyong bayan,
at iligtas ang iyong pinahiran ng langis.
Iyong dinurog ang puno ng masamang sambahayan,
hinubaran mo siya mula hita hanggang sa leeg. Selah
14 Iyong tinusok ang ulo ng kanyang mga mandirigma ng kanyang sariling sibat;
na dumating na parang ipu-ipo upang pangalatin ako;
ang kanilang kagalakan ay sakmaling lihim ang dukha.
15 Iyong tinapakan ang dagat ng iyong mga kabayo,
ang bunton ng makapangyarihang tubig.

16 Aking narinig, at ang aking katawan ay nanginginig,
ang aking mga labi ay nangangatal sa tinig;
ang kabuluka'y pumapasok sa aking mga buto,
ang aking mga hakbang ay nanginginig.
Ako'y tahimik na maghihintay sa araw ng kapahamakan,
na dumating sa bayan na sumasakop sa atin.
17 Bagama't ang puno ng igos ay hindi namumulaklak,
ni magkakaroon man ng bunga sa mga puno ng ubas;
ang olibo ay hindi magbubunga,
at ang mga bukid ay hindi magbibigay ng pagkain;
ang kawan ay aalisin sa kulungan,
at hindi na magkakaroon ng bakahan sa mga silungan,
18 gayunma'y magagalak ako sa Panginoon,
ako'y magagalak sa Diyos ng aking kaligtasan.
19 Ang(A) Diyos, ang Panginoon, ay aking kalakasan;
ginagawa niya ang aking mga paa na gaya ng sa mga usa,
pinalalakad niya ako sa aking matataas na dako.

Hymn About God’s Reign
1 Prayer of Habakkuk, the prophet. According to Shigyonot.[a]
2 O Lord, I have heard your renown,
and am in awe, O Lord, of your work.
In the course of years revive it,[b]
in the course of years make yourself known;
in your wrath remember compassion!
His glory covered the heavens,
and his praise filled the earth;
4 his splendor spread like the light.
He raised his horns high,(B)
he rejoiced on the day of his strength.
5 Before him went pestilence,
and plague[e] followed in his steps.
6 He stood and shook the earth;
he looked and made the nations tremble.
Ancient mountains were shattered,
the age-old hills bowed low,
age-old orbits[f] collapsed.
7 The tents of Cushan trembled,
the pavilions of the land of Midian.[g]
8 Was your anger against the rivers, O Lord?
your wrath against the rivers,
your rage against the sea,[h](C)
That you mounted your steeds,
your victorious chariot?
9 You readied your bow,
you filled your bowstring with arrows.

You split the earth with rivers;
10 at the sight of you the mountains writhed.
The clouds poured down water;
the deep roared loudly.
The sun[i] forgot to rise,
11 the moon left its lofty station,(D)
At the light of your flying arrows,
at the gleam of your flashing spear.
12 In wrath you marched on the earth,
in fury you trampled the nations.
13 You came forth to save your people,
to save your anointed one.[j]
You crushed the back of the wicked,
you laid him bare, bottom to neck.

14 [k]You pierced his head with your shafts;
his princes you scattered with your stormwind,
as food for the poor in unknown places.
15 You trampled the sea with your horses
amid the churning of the deep waters.
16 I hear, and my body trembles;
at the sound, my lips quiver.
Decay invades my bones,
my legs tremble beneath me.
I await the day of distress
that will come upon the people who attack us.
17 For though the fig tree does not blossom,
and no fruit appears on the vine,
Though the yield of the olive fails
and the terraces produce no nourishment,
Though the flocks disappear from the fold
and there is no herd in the stalls,
18 Yet I will rejoice in the Lord
and exult in my saving God.
19 God, my Lord, is my strength;
he makes my feet swift as those of deer
and enables me to tread upon the heights.[l](E)

- 3:1 Shigyonot: a Hebrew technical term no longer understood, but probably a musical notation regarding the following hymn. This term, the references to the leader and stringed instruments at the end of the hymn (v. 19), and the use of the term selah in vv. 3, 9, and 13 are found elsewhere in the Bible only in the Psalter, and they indicate that, like the psalms, this poem was once used in worship.
- 3:2 In the course of years revive it: a plea for God to renew the works of the past.
- 3:3–15 Cf. the theophanies in Dt 33:2–3; Jgs 5:4–5; Ps 18:8–16; 68:8–9; 77:17–21; 97:1–5; Na 1:3–6, etc. Conventional language is employed to describe the appearance of the Lord, as in Ex 19:16–19.
- 3:3 Teman: a region in Edom. Mount Paran: in the territory of Edom, or the northern part of the Sinai peninsula.
- 3:5 Pestilence…plague: these may be figures who are part of the heavenly armies God leads into battle.
- 3:6 Age-old orbits: the regular paths through the skies of heavenly bodies are disrupted at the appearance of the divine warrior, as are the ancient mountains on earth. Such cosmic disruption is typical of divine appearances (Ps 18:8; Na 1:5).
- 3:7 Cushan…Midian: the inhabitants of the area southeast of Judah where the divine march originates (Teman, Mount Paran), who are shaken, together with the cosmos, at God’s appearance.
- 3:8 Rivers…sea: the forces of chaos personified as yam (Sea) and nahar (River) try to destroy the order God imposed at creation by sweeping past their boundaries and covering the earth. Their mention here and in v. 15 emphasizes that God is both creator and deliverer, subduing historical enemies and cosmic forces.
- 3:10–11 Sun…moon: heavenly figures who, like pestilence and plague (v. 5), serve in God’s army, or are startled at God’s appearance, as are the ancient constellations (v. 6).
- 3:13 Your anointed one: the theocratic king, the head of God’s people. The back of the wicked: this may refer both to God’s cosmic enemy, River/Sea, and to the leader of Israel’s historical enemy.
- 3:14 The last two lines of this verse are obscure in Hebrew and difficult to translate.
- 3:19 The heights: this term can also mean “backs” and may be an image of conquest over the poet’s foes.

2 Lord, I have heard(B) of your fame;
I stand in awe(C) of your deeds, Lord.(D)
Repeat(E) them in our day,
in our time make them known;
in wrath remember mercy.(F)
3 God came from Teman,(G)
the Holy One(H) from Mount Paran.[b](I)

and his praise filled the earth.(K)
4 His splendor was like the sunrise;(L)
rays flashed from his hand,
where his power(M) was hidden.
5 Plague(N) went before him;
pestilence followed his steps.
6 He stood, and shook the earth;

The ancient mountains crumbled(O)
and the age-old hills(P) collapsed(Q)—
but he marches on forever.(R)

16 I heard and my heart pounded,
my lips quivered at the sound;
decay crept into my bones,

Yet I will wait patiently(AO) for the day of calamity
to come on the nation invading us.
17 Though the fig tree does not bud
and there are no grapes on the vines,
though the olive crop fails
and the fields produce no food,(AP)
though there are no sheep in the pen
and no cattle in the stalls,(AQ)
18 yet I will rejoice in the Lord,(AR)
I will be joyful in God my Savior.(AS)
19 The Sovereign Lord is my strength;(AT)
he makes my feet like the feet of a deer,
he enables me to tread on the heights.(AU)
