⁵ indeed, wine^(A) betrays him;
    he is arrogant^(B) and never at rest.
Because he is as greedy as the grave
    and like death is never satisfied,^(C)
he gathers to himself all the nations
    and takes captive^(D) all the peoples.

¹¹ Woe^(A) to those who rise early in the morning
    to run after their drinks,
who stay up late at night
    till they are inflamed with wine.^(B)
12 They have harps and lyres at their banquets,
    pipes^(C) and timbrels^(D) and wine,
but they have no regard^(E) for the deeds of the Lord,
    no respect for the work of his hands.^(F)

²⁰ Death and Destruction^[a] are never satisfied,^(A)
    and neither are human eyes.^(B)

20 Wine^(A) is a mocker^(B) and beer a brawler;
    whoever is led astray^(C) by them is not wise.^(D)

⁵ They set the tables,
    they spread the rugs,
    they eat, they drink!^(A)
Get up, you officers,
    oil the shields!^(B)

⁶ We have heard of Moab’s^(A) pride^(B)—
    how great is her arrogance!—
of her conceit, her pride and her insolence;
    but her boasts are empty.

¹⁶ Those who see you stare at you,
    they ponder your fate:^(A)
“Is this the man who shook^(B) the earth
    and made kingdoms tremble,
¹⁷ the man who made the world a wilderness,^(C)
    who overthrew^(D) its cities
    and would not let his captives go home?”^(E)

“‘By the strength of my hand^(P) I have done this,^(Q)
    and by my wisdom, because I have understanding.
I removed the boundaries of nations,
    I plundered their treasures;^(R)
    like a mighty one I subdued^[a] their kings.^(S)
