Guerra tra Efraim e Gàlaad. Morte di Iefte
12 Ora gli uomini di Efraim si radunarono, passarono il fiume verso Zafon e dissero a Iefte: «Perché sei andato a combattere contro gli Ammoniti e non ci hai chiamati con te? Noi bruceremo te e la tua casa». 2 Iefte rispose loro: «Io e il mio popolo abbiamo avuto grandi lotte con gli Ammoniti; quando vi ho chiamati in aiuto, non siete venuti a liberarmi dalle loro mani. 3 Vedendo che voi non venivate in mio aiuto, ho esposto al pericolo la vita, ho marciato contro gli Ammoniti e il Signore me li ha messi nelle mani. Perché dunque siete venuti oggi contro di me a muovermi guerra?». 4 Iefte, radunati tutti gli uomini di Gàlaad, diede battaglia ad Efraim; gli uomini di Gàlaad sconfissero gli Efraimiti, perché questi dicevano: «Voi siete fuggiaschi di Efraim; Gàlaad sta in mezzo a Efraim e in mezzo a Manàsse». 5 I Galaaditi intercettarono agli Efraimiti i guadi del Giordano; quando uno dei fuggiaschi di Efraim diceva: «Lasciatemi passare», gli uomini di Gàlaad gli chiedevano: «Sei un Efraimita?». Se quegli rispondeva: «No», 6 i Galaaditi gli dicevano: «Ebbene, dì Scibbolet», e quegli diceva Sibbolet, non sapendo pronunciare bene. Allora lo afferravano e lo uccidevano presso i guadi del Giordano. In quella occasione perirono quarantaduemila uomini di Efraim. 7 Iefte fu giudice d'Israele per sei anni. Poi Iefte, il Galaadita, morì e fu sepolto nella sua città in Gàlaad.
9. IBSAN
8 Dopo di lui fu giudice d'Israele Ibsan di Betlemme. 9 Egli ebbe trenta figli, maritò trenta figlie e fece venire da fuori trenta fanciulle per i suoi figli. Fu giudice d'Israele per sette anni. 10 Poi Ibsan morì e fu sepolto a Betlemme.
10. ELON
11 Dopo di lui fu giudice d'Israele Elon, lo Zabulonita; fu giudice d'Israele per dieci anni. 12 Poi Elon, lo Zabulonita, morì e fu sepolto ad Aialon, nel paese di Zàbulon.
11. ABDON
13 Dopo di lui fu giudice d'Israele Abdon, figlio di Illel, di Piraton. 14 Ebbe quaranta figli e trenta nipoti, i quali cavalcavano settanta asinelli. Fu giudice d'Israele per otto anni. 15 Poi Abdon, figlio di Illel, il Piratonita, morì e fu sepolto a Piraton, nel paese di Efraim, sul monte Amalek.

12 Or gli uomini di Efraim si radunarono, passarono a Tsafon e dissero a Jefte: «Perché sei andato a combattere contro i figli di Ammon e non ci hai chiamati per andare con te? Noi bruceremo la tua casa con te dentro».
2 Jefte rispose loro: «lo e il mio popolo abbiamo avuto una grande disputa con i figli di Ammon; e quando vi chiesi aiuto non mi avete liberato dalle loro mani.
3 Così, vedendo che non venivate in mio aiuto, ho posto a repentaglio la mia vita e ho marciato contro i figli di Ammon; e l'Eterno me li ha dati nelle mani. Perché dunque siete oggi saliti contro di me per muovermi guerra?».
4 Poi Jefte radunò tutti gli uomini di Galaad e diede battaglia ad Efraim; e gli uomini di Galaad sconfissero Efraim, perché questi dicevano: «voi Galaaditi siete fuggiaschi di Efraim, in mezzo ad Efraim e in mezzo a Manasse!».
5 Gli uomini di Galaad si impadronirono dei guadi del Giordano prima che quei di Efraim arrivassero; così, quando uno dei fuggiaschi di Efraim diceva: «Lasciatemi passare», gli uomini di Galaad gli chiedevano: «Sei tu un Efraimita?». Se quegli rispondeva: «No», i Galaaditi gli dicevano:
6 «Allora di' Scibboleth»; se quegli diceva «Sibboleth», perché non poteva pronunciare correttamente, essi lo afferravano e lo uccidevano presso i guadi del Giordano. In quel tempo perirono quarantaduemila uomini di Efraim.
7 Jefte fu giudice d'Israele per sei anni. Poi Jefte, il Galaadita, morì e fu sepolto in una delle città di Galaad.
8 Dopo di lui fu giudice d'Israele Ibtsan di Betlemme.
9 Egli ebbe trenta figli; maritò trenta figlie e fece venire da fuori trenta fanciulle per i suoi figli. Fu giudice d'Israele per sette anni.
10 Poi Ibtsan morì e fu sepolto a Betlemme.
11 Dopo di lui fu giudice d'Israele Elon, lo Zabulonita; fu giudice d'Israele per dieci anni.
12 Poi Elon, lo Zabulonita, morì e fu sepolto ad Ajalon, nel paese di Zabulon.
13 Dopo di lui fu giudice d'Israele Abdon, figlio di Hillel, il Pirathonita.
14 Ebbe quaranta figli e trenta nipoti, che cavalcavano settanta asinelli. Fu giudice d'Israele per otto anni.
15 Poi Abdon, figlio di Hillel, il Pirathonita, morì e fu sepolto a Pirathon nel paese di Efraim, nella regione montuosa di Amalek".

Jephthah and Ephraim
12 The men from the tribe of Ephraim called all their soldiers together. Then they went across the river to the city of Zaphon. They said to Jephthah, “Why didn’t you call us to help you fight the Ammonites? We will burn your house down with you in it.”
2 Jephthah answered them, “The Ammonites have been giving us many problems. So my people and I fought against them. I called you, but you didn’t come to help us. 3 I saw that you would not help us, so I risked my own life. I went across the river to fight against the Ammonites. The Lord helped me defeat them. Now why have you come to fight against me today?”
4 Then Jephthah called the men of Gilead together. They fought against the men from the tribe of Ephraim because they had insulted the men of Gilead. They had said, “You men of Gilead are nothing but survivors of the men of Ephraim. Part of you belongs to Ephraim, and part of you belongs to Manasseh.” The men of Gilead defeated the men of Ephraim.
5 The men of Gilead captured the places where people cross the Jordan River. Those places led to the country of Ephraim. Any time a survivor from Ephraim came to the river and said, “Let me cross,” the men of Gilead would ask him, “Are you from Ephraim?” If he said, “No,” 6 they would say, “Say the word ‘Shibboleth.’” The men of Ephraim could not say that word correctly. They pronounced the word “Sibboleth.” So if the man said, “Sibboleth,” then the men of Gilead knew he was from Ephraim. So they would kill him at the crossing place. They killed 42,000 men from Ephraim.
7 Jephthah was a judge for the Israelites for six years. Then Jephthah from Gilead died and was buried in his town in Gilead.
Ibzan, the Judge
8 After Jephthah, a man named Ibzan was a judge for the Israelites. Ibzan was from the city of Bethlehem. 9 Ibzan had 30 sons and 30 daughters. He told his 30 daughters to marry men who were not his relatives. And he found 30 women who were not his relatives, and his sons married these women. Ibzan was a judge for the Israelites for seven years. 10 Then Ibzan died and was buried in the city of Bethlehem.
Elon, the Judge
11 After Ibzan, a man named Elon was a judge for the Israelites. Elon was from the tribe of Zebulun. He was a judge for the Israelites for ten years. 12 Then Elon from the tribe of Zebulun died and was buried in the city of Aijalon in the land of Zebulun.
Abdon, the Judge
13 After Elon died, a man named Abdon son of Hillel was a judge for the Israelites. Abdon was from the city of Pirathon. 14 Abdon had 40 sons and 30 grandsons. They rode on 70 donkeys.[a] Abdon was a judge for the Israelites for eight years. 15 Then Abdon son of Hillel died and was buried in the city of Pirathon. Pirathon is in the land of Ephraim in the hill country where the Amalekites lived.
