Tola e Iair, giudici d’Israele
10 (A)Dopo Abimelec, per liberare Israele, vi fu Tola, figlio di Pua, figlio di Dodo, uomo d’Issacar. Abitava a Samir, nella regione montuosa di Efraim. 2 Fu giudice d’Israele per ventitré anni; poi morì e fu sepolto a Samir.
3 Dopo di lui vi fu Iair, il Galaadita, che fu giudice d’Israele per ventidue anni. 4 Ebbe trenta figli che cavalcavano trenta asinelli e avevano trenta città, che si chiamano anche oggi i Borghi di Iair e sono nel paese di Galaad. 5 Poi Iair morì e fu sepolto a Camon.
I Filistei e gli Ammoniti opprimono Israele
6 (B)I figli d’Israele continuarono a fare ciò che è male agli occhi del Signore e servirono gli idoli di Baal e di Astarte, gli dèi della Siria, gli dèi di Sidone, gli dèi di Moab, gli dèi degli Ammoniti e gli dèi dei Filistei; abbandonarono il Signore e non lo servirono più. 7 L’ira del Signore si accese contro i figli d’Israele ed egli li diede nelle mani dei Filistei e nelle mani dei figli di Ammon. 8 In quell’anno questi angariarono e oppressero i figli d’Israele; per diciotto anni oppressero tutti i figli d’Israele che erano di là dal Giordano nel paese degli Amorei, in Galaad. 9 I figli di Ammon attraversarono il Giordano per combattere anche contro Giuda, contro Beniamino e contro la casa di Efraim; e Israele fu in grande angoscia.
10 Allora i figli d’Israele gridarono al Signore e dissero: «Abbiamo peccato contro di te, perché abbiamo abbandonato il nostro Dio e abbiamo servito i vari Baal». 11 Il Signore disse ai figli d’Israele: «Non vi ho liberati dagli Egiziani, dagli Amorei, dai figli di Ammon e dai Filistei? 12 Quando i Sidoni, gli Amalechiti e i Maoniti vi opprimevano e voi gridaste a me, non vi liberai dalle loro mani? 13 Eppure, mi avete abbandonato e avete servito altri dèi; perciò io non vi libererò più. 14 Andate a gridare agli dèi che avete scelto; vi salvino essi nel tempo della vostra angoscia!» 15 I figli d’Israele dissero al Signore: «Abbiamo peccato; facci tutto quello che a te piace; soltanto, te ne preghiamo, liberaci oggi!» 16 Allora tolsero di mezzo a loro gli dèi stranieri e servirono il Signore, che si addolorò per l’afflizione d’Israele.
17 I figli di Ammon si adunarono e si accamparono in Galaad e pure i figli d’Israele si adunarono e si accamparono a Mispa. 18 Il popolo, i prìncipi di Galaad, si dissero l’un l’altro: «Chi sarà l’uomo che comincerà l’attacco contro i figli di Ammon? Egli sarà il capo di tutti gli abitanti di Galaad».

Tola and Jair Judge Israel
10 Then after Abimelech died, Tola the son of Puah, the son of Dodo, a man of Issachar, (A)arose to save Israel; and he lived in Shamir in the hill country of Ephraim. 2 And he judged Israel twenty-three years. Then he died and was buried in Shamir.
3 After him, Jair the Gileadite arose and judged Israel twenty-two years. 4 And he had thirty sons who rode on thirty donkeys, and they had thirty cities [a]in the land of Gilead (B)that are called [b]Havvoth-jair to this day. 5 And Jair died and was buried in Kamon.
Israel Forsakes Yahweh Again
6 Then the sons of Israel again did what was evil in the eyes of Yahweh and (C)served the Baals and the Ashtaroth, the gods of Aram, the gods of Sidon, the gods of Moab, (D)the gods of the sons of Ammon, and the gods of the Philistines; thus (E)they forsook Yahweh and did not serve Him. 7 So the anger of Yahweh burned against Israel, and He (F)sold them into the hands of the Philistines and into the hands of the sons of Ammon. 8 And they shattered and smashed the sons of Israel [c]that year; for eighteen years they did this to all the sons of Israel who were beyond the Jordan [d]in Gilead in the land of the Amorites. 9 Then the sons of Ammon crossed the Jordan to fight also against Judah, Benjamin, and the house of Ephraim, so that Israel was greatly distressed.
Israel Cries Out to Yahweh
10 And the (G)sons of Israel cried out to Yahweh, saying, “We have sinned against You, for indeed, we have forsaken our God and served the Baals.” 11 Then Yahweh said to the sons of Israel, “Did I not save you (H)from the Egyptians, (I)the Amorites, (J)the sons of Ammon, and the Philistines? 12 Also the Sidonians, the Amalekites, and the Maonites (K)oppressed you. And you cried out to Me, and I saved you from their hand. 13 Yet (L)you have forsaken Me and served other gods; therefore I will no longer save you. 14 (M)Go and cry out to the gods which you have chosen; let them save you in the time of your distress.” 15 Then the sons of Israel said to Yahweh, “We have sinned, so You, (N)do to us whatever seems good in Your eyes; only please deliver us this day.” 16 (O)So they removed the foreign gods from among them and served Yahweh; and [e](P)He could bear the trouble of Israel no longer.
17 Then the sons of Ammon were summoned, and they camped in Gilead. And the sons of Israel gathered together and camped in (Q)Mizpah. 18 And the people, the princes of Gilead, said to one another, “Who is the man who will begin to fight against the sons of Ammon? He shall become head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.”

Tola
10 After the time of Abimelek,(A) a man of Issachar(B) named Tola son of Puah,(C) the son of Dodo, rose to save(D) Israel. He lived in Shamir,(E) in the hill country of Ephraim. 2 He led[a] Israel twenty-three years; then he died, and was buried in Shamir.
Jair
3 He was followed by Jair(F) of Gilead, who led Israel twenty-two years. 4 He had thirty sons, who rode thirty donkeys.(G) They controlled thirty towns in Gilead, which to this day are called Havvoth Jair.[b](H) 5 When Jair(I) died, he was buried in Kamon.
Jephthah
6 Again the Israelites did evil in the eyes of the Lord.(J) They served the Baals and the Ashtoreths,(K) and the gods of Aram,(L) the gods of Sidon,(M) the gods of Moab, the gods of the Ammonites(N) and the gods of the Philistines.(O) And because the Israelites forsook the Lord(P) and no longer served him, 7 he became angry(Q) with them. He sold them(R) into the hands of the Philistines and the Ammonites, 8 who that year shattered and crushed them. For eighteen years they oppressed all the Israelites on the east side of the Jordan in Gilead,(S) the land of the Amorites. 9 The Ammonites also crossed the Jordan to fight against Judah,(T) Benjamin and Ephraim;(U) Israel was in great distress. 10 Then the Israelites cried(V) out to the Lord, “We have sinned(W) against you, forsaking our God and serving the Baals.”(X)
11 The Lord replied, “When the Egyptians,(Y) the Amorites,(Z) the Ammonites,(AA) the Philistines,(AB) 12 the Sidonians, the Amalekites(AC) and the Maonites[c](AD) oppressed you(AE) and you cried to me for help, did I not save you from their hands? 13 But you have forsaken(AF) me and served other gods,(AG) so I will no longer save you. 14 Go and cry out to the gods you have chosen. Let them save(AH) you when you are in trouble!(AI)”
15 But the Israelites said to the Lord, “We have sinned. Do with us whatever you think best,(AJ) but please rescue us now.” 16 Then they got rid of the foreign gods among them and served the Lord.(AK) And he could bear Israel’s misery(AL) no longer.(AM)
17 When the Ammonites were called to arms and camped in Gilead, the Israelites assembled and camped at Mizpah.(AN) 18 The leaders of the people of Gilead said to each other, “Whoever will take the lead in attacking the Ammonites will be head(AO) over all who live in Gilead.”
