1 Lời của Người Truyền Đạo,[a] con vua Đa-vít, ngự tại Giê-ru-sa-lem.
2 Người Truyền Đạo nói:
Vô nghĩa, vô nghĩa, hư ảo! Hư ảo, vô nghĩa, vô nghĩa!
Trí người không thể nào hiểu nổi mọi việc xảy ra trên đời!

Chuyển sang hướng bắc,
Gió xoay đi, xoay lại,
Đổi hướng xoay chiều theo luồng gió thổi.
7 Mọi sông ngòi đều đổ ra biển,
Nhưng biển chẳng hề đầy.
Nước trở về nguồn,
Nơi đó sông ngòi lại tiếp tục chảy ra.
8 Mọi vật không ngừng xoay vần;
Môi miệng người nói mãi vẫn có điều để nói;
Mắt nhìn mãi vẫn không thỏa;
Tai nghe mãi vẫn không chán.
9 Điều gì đã có sẽ còn tiếp tục có,
Điều gì Đức Chúa Trời đã làm, Ngài vẫn tiếp tục làm.
Chẳng có gì mới trên cõi đời này.
10 Nếu có điều gì khiến người ta nói:
“Xem kìa, một điều mới!”
Thì chính điều ấy đã có rồi, có từ ngàn xưa,
Trước thời chúng ta.
11 Không ai tưởng nhớ những thế hệ đã qua;
Những thế hệ mai sau cũng vậy,
Những người đến sau họ
Cũng chẳng tưởng nhớ đến họ.

12 Tôi là Người Truyền Đạo, tôi đã từng làm vua Y-sơ-ra-ên tại Giê-ru-sa-lem. 13 Tôi quyết tâm noi theo nguyên tắc khôn ngoan của các bậc hiền triết,[b] nghiên cứu và khảo sát tường tận mọi việc xảy ra trên cõi đời này. Đó là một công việc khó khăn Đức Chúa Trời ban cho loài người. 14 Sau khi quan sát mọi việc xảy ra trên đời, tôi nhận thấy trí người không thể nào hiểu nổi, như không ai có thể điều khiển ngọn gió thổi theo chiều mình muốn.
15 Vật chi cong vẹo không thể uốn cho thẳng,
Vật chi thiếu hụt không thể đếm cho đủ.
16 Tôi tự nhủ: “Này, tôi đã thu thập được nhiều kinh nghiệm và hiểu rõ thế nào là khôn ngoan và tri thức. Tôi được khôn ngoan trội hơn mọi vua cai trị Giê-ru-sa-lem trước tôi.” 17 Tôi quyết tâm tìm hiểu sự khôn ngoan và tri thức, điên rồ và khờ dại. Tôi khám phá rằng công việc tìm hiểu này cũng khó như điều khiển chiều gió.
18 Càng thêm khôn ngoan càng lắm ưu phiền,
Càng thêm tri thức, càng nhiều khổ tâm.

Everything Is Meaningless
1 The words of the Teacher,[a](A) son of David, king in Jerusalem:(B)
2 “Meaningless! Meaningless!”
says the Teacher.
“Utterly meaningless!
Everything is meaningless.”(C)
3 What do people gain from all their labors
at which they toil under the sun?(D)
4 Generations come and generations go,
but the earth remains forever.(E)
5 The sun rises and the sun sets,
and hurries back to where it rises.(F)
6 The wind blows to the south
and turns to the north;
round and round it goes,
ever returning on its course.
7 All streams flow into the sea,
yet the sea is never full.
To the place the streams come from,
there they return again.(G)
8 All things are wearisome,
more than one can say.
The eye never has enough of seeing,(H)
nor the ear its fill of hearing.
9 What has been will be again,
what has been done will be done again;(I)
there is nothing new under the sun.
10 Is there anything of which one can say,
“Look! This is something new”?
It was here already, long ago;
it was here before our time.
11 No one remembers the former generations,(J)
and even those yet to come
will not be remembered
by those who follow them.(K)
Wisdom Is Meaningless
12 I, the Teacher,(L) was king over Israel in Jerusalem.(M) 13 I applied my mind to study and to explore by wisdom all that is done under the heavens.(N) What a heavy burden God has laid on mankind!(O) 14 I have seen all the things that are done under the sun; all of them are meaningless, a chasing after the wind.(P)
15 What is crooked cannot be straightened;(Q)
what is lacking cannot be counted.
16 I said to myself, “Look, I have increased in wisdom more than anyone who has ruled over Jerusalem before me;(R) I have experienced much of wisdom and knowledge.” 17 Then I applied myself to the understanding of wisdom,(S) and also of madness and folly,(T) but I learned that this, too, is a chasing after the wind.
