6 When men began to multiply on the surface of the ground, and daughters were born to them, 2 God’s sons saw that men’s daughters were beautiful, and they took any that they wanted for themselves as wives. 3 Yahweh said, “My Spirit will not strive with man forever, because he also is flesh; so his days will be one hundred twenty years.” 4 The Nephilim[a] were in the earth in those days, and also after that, when God’s sons came in to men’s daughters and had children with them. Those were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown.
5 Yahweh saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of man’s heart was continually only evil. 6 Yahweh was sorry that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him in his heart. 7 Yahweh said, “I will destroy man whom I have created from the surface of the ground—man, along with animals, creeping things, and birds of the sky—for I am sorry that I have made them.” 8 But Noah found favor in Yahweh’s eyes.
9 This is the history of the generations of Noah: Noah was a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time. Noah walked with God. 10 Noah became the father of three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth. 11 The earth was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence. 12 God saw the earth, and saw that it was corrupt, for all flesh had corrupted their way on the earth.
13 God said to Noah, “I will bring an end to all flesh, for the earth is filled with violence through them. Behold, I will destroy them and the earth. 14 Make a ship of gopher wood. You shall make rooms in the ship, and shall seal it inside and outside with pitch. 15 This is how you shall make it. The length of the ship shall be three hundred cubits,[b] its width fifty cubits, and its height thirty cubits. 16 You shall make a roof in the ship, and you shall finish it to a cubit upward. You shall set the door of the ship in its side. You shall make it with lower, second, and third levels. 17 I, even I, will bring the flood of waters on this earth, to destroy all flesh having the breath of life from under the sky. Everything that is in the earth will die. 18 But I will establish my covenant with you. You shall come into the ship, you, your sons, your wife, and your sons’ wives with you. 19 Of every living thing of all flesh, you shall bring two of every sort into the ship, to keep them alive with you. They shall be male and female. 20 Of the birds after their kind, of the livestock after their kind, of every creeping thing of the ground after its kind, two of every sort will come to you, to keep them alive. 21 Take with you some of all food that is eaten, and gather it to yourself; and it will be for food for you, and for them.” 22 Thus Noah did. He did all that God commanded him.

Människornas ondska växer
6 När människorna började föröka sig på jorden och döttrar föddes åt dem, 2 såg Guds söner att människornas döttrar var vackra, och de tog till hustrur alla de ville ha. 3 Då sade Herren: ”Min Ande ska inte bli kvar i[a] människorna för alltid på grund av deras förvillelse. De är kött[b] och deras tid ska vara hundratjugo år[c].”
4 (A) Vid denna tid, då Guds söner[d] gick in till människornas döttrar och dessa födde barn åt dem, och även senare, levde våldsverkarna[e] på jorden. Detta var forntidens väldiga män som var så ryktbara.
5 (B) Och Herren såg att människornas ondska var stor på jorden och att deras hjärtans alla tankar och avsikter ständigt var alltigenom onda. 6 Då sörjde Herren att han hade gjort människorna på jorden, och han var bedrövad i sitt hjärta. 7 Herren sade: ”Människorna som jag har skapat ska jag utplåna från jordens yta – både människor och fyrfotadjur, kräldjur och himlens fåglar. Jag sörjer att jag har gjort dem.”
8 Men Noa hade funnit nåd inför Herrens ögon.
III. NOAS FORTSATTA HISTORIA 6:9-9:29
9 (C) Detta är Noas fortsatta historia. Noa var en rättfärdig man och fullkomlig bland sina samtida. Han vandrade med Gud. 10 Och Noa blev far till tre söner, Sem, Ham och Jafet.
11 Men jorden blev mer och mer fördärvad inför Gud och full av våld. 12 Gud såg på jorden, och se, den var fördärvad, eftersom alla människor[f] levde i fördärv på jorden.
Floden förutsägs och arken byggs
13 Då sade Gud till Noa: ”Jag har bestämt mig för att göra slut på allt levande, för jorden är full av våld på grund av dem. Se, jag ska förgöra dem tillsammans med jorden. 14 Gör dig en ark[g] av goferträ[h], inred den med kamrar och bestryk den med jordbeck[i] både på insidan och utsidan. 15 Så ska du göra arken: Den ska vara trehundra alnar lång, femtio alnar bred och trettio alnar hög.[j] 16 Högst upp ska du göra en öppning för ljuset, en aln hög, runt hela arken. En dörr till arken ska du sätta på sidan. Du ska inreda den så att den får en undervåning, en mellanvåning och en övervåning.
17 Se, jag ska låta floden[k] komma med vatten över jorden för att förgöra alla varelser under himlen som har livsande. Allt på jorden ska förgås. 18 Men med dig vill jag upprätta mitt förbund. Du ska gå in i arken med dina söner, din hustru och dina sonhustrur. 19 Av allt levande, av alla varelser, ska du föra in ett par i arken för att de ska överleva tillsammans med dig. Hankön och honkön ska det vara. 20 Av fåglarna efter deras slag, av fyrfotadjuren efter deras slag och av alla kräldjur på marken efter deras slag ska ett par av varje slag gå in till dig för att förbli vid liv. 21 Och du ska ta med dig all slags föda, sådant som kan ätas, och samla i förråd. Det ska tjäna som mat för dig och dem.”
22 Och Noa gjorde så. Han gjorde i allt som Gud hade befallt honom.

- 6:15 trehundra … femtio … trettio alnar Närmare 150 x 25 x 15 meter. Moderna lastfartyg byggs efter liknande proportioner.
- 6:17 floden Flera antika flodberättelser har bevarats i Mesopotamien. Den mest kända ingår i Gilgamesheposet, troligen nertecknat under patriarktiden ca 2000 f Kr, med många paralleller till Bibelns skildring men även skillnader (t ex en kubformad ark). Troligen är dessa övriga flodberättelser minnen av samma händelse.

The Human Race Becomes Evil
6 The number of people on earth began to grow, and daughters were born to them. 2 When the sons of God saw that these girls were beautiful, they married any of them they chose. 3 The Lord said, “My Spirit will not remain in human beings forever, because they are flesh. They will live only 120 years.”
4 The Nephilim were on the earth in those days and also later. That was when the sons of God had sexual relations with the daughters of human beings. These women gave birth to children, who became famous and were the mighty warriors of long ago.
5 The Lord saw that the human beings on the earth were very wicked and that everything they thought about was evil. 6 He was sorry he had made human beings on the earth, and his heart was filled with pain. 7 So the Lord said, “I will destroy all human beings that I made on the earth. And I will destroy every animal and everything that crawls on the earth and the birds of the air, because I am sorry I have made them.” 8 But Noah pleased the Lord.
Noah and the Great Flood
9 This is the family history of Noah. Noah was a good man, the most innocent man of his time, and he walked with God. 10 He had three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth.
11 People on earth did what God said was evil, and violence was everywhere. 12 When God saw that everyone on the earth did only evil, 13 he said to Noah, “Because people have made the earth full of violence, I will destroy all of them from the earth. 14 Build a boat of cypress wood for yourself. Make rooms in it and cover it inside and outside with tar. 15 This is how big I want you to build the boat: four hundred fifty feet long, seventy-five feet wide, and forty-five feet high. 16 Make an opening around the top of the boat that is eighteen inches high from the edge of the roof down. Put a door in the side of the boat. Make an upper, middle, and lower deck in it. 17 I will bring a flood of water on the earth to destroy all living things that live under the sky, including everything that has the breath of life. Everything on the earth will die. 18 But I will make an agreement with you—you, your sons, your wife, and your sons’ wives will all go into the boat. 19 Also, you must bring into the boat two of every living thing, male and female. Keep them alive with you. 20 Two of every kind of bird, animal, and crawling thing will come to you to be kept alive. 21 Also gather some of every kind of food and store it on the boat as food for you and the animals.”
22 Noah did everything that God commanded him.
