Jacob’s Family Settles in Goshen
47 Then (A)Joseph went in and told Pharaoh and said, “My father and my brothers and their flocks and their herds and all that they have, have come out of the land of Canaan; and behold, they are in the land of (B)Goshen.” 2 And he took five men from among his brothers and (C)set them before Pharaoh. 3 Then Pharaoh said to his brothers, “(D)What is your occupation?” So they said to Pharaoh, “Your servants are (E)shepherds, both we and our fathers.” 4 And they said to Pharaoh, “(F)We have come to sojourn in the land, for there is no pasture for your servants’ flocks, for (G)the famine is heavy in the land of Canaan. So now, please let your servants [a](H)live in the land of Goshen.” 5 Then Pharaoh said to [b]Joseph, “Your father and your brothers have come to you. 6 The land of Egypt is [c]at your disposal; have your father and your brothers settle in (I)the best of the land, let them settle in the land of Goshen; and if you know any (J)excellent men among them, then [d]put them in charge of my livestock.”
7 Then Joseph brought his father Jacob and stood him before Pharaoh; and Jacob (K)blessed Pharaoh. 8 And Pharaoh said to Jacob, “How many are the days of the years of your life?” 9 So Jacob said to Pharaoh, “The days (L)of the years of my sojourning are [e]130; few and evil have been the days of the years of my life, and they have not [f]attained to (M)the days of the years [g]that my fathers lived during the days of their sojourning.” 10 And Jacob (N)blessed Pharaoh and went out from the presence of Pharaoh. 11 So Joseph settled his father and his brothers and gave them a possession in the land of Egypt, in (O)the best of the land, in the land of (P)Rameses, as Pharaoh had commanded. 12 And Joseph (Q)provided his father and his brothers and all his father’s household with [h]food, according to their little ones.
Joseph and the Famine
13 Now there was no [i]food in all the land because the famine was very heavy, so that (R)the land of Egypt and the land of Canaan languished because of the famine. 14 (S)And Joseph gathered all the money that was found in the land of Egypt and in the land of Canaan for the grain which they bought, and Joseph brought the money into Pharaoh’s house. 15 Then the money came to an end in the land of Egypt and in the land of Canaan. So all the Egyptians came to Joseph [j]and said, “Give us [k]food, for (T)why should we die in your presence? For our money [l]is gone.” 16 Then Joseph said, “Give up your livestock, and I will give you food for your livestock, since your money [m]is gone.” 17 So they brought their livestock to Joseph, and Joseph gave them [n]food in exchange for the horses and the [o]flocks and the herds and the donkeys; and he [p]fed them with [q]food in exchange for all their livestock [r]that year. 18 Then that year came to an end. And they came to him the [s]next year and said to him, “We will not hide from my lord that our money has come to an end, and the [t]livestock are my lord’s. There is nothing left [u]for my lord except our bodies and our land. 19 Why should we die before your eyes, both we and our land? Buy us and our land for [v]food, and we and our land will be slaves to Pharaoh. So give us seed, that we may live and not die, and that the land may not be desolate.”
20 So Joseph bought all the land of Egypt for Pharaoh, for [w]every Egyptian sold his field because the famine was severe upon them. Thus the land became Pharaoh’s. 21 As for the people, he moved them to the cities from one end of Egypt’s border to the other end. 22 Only the land of the priests he did not buy, for the priests had an allotment from Pharaoh, and they ate off the allotment which Pharaoh gave them. Therefore, they did not sell their land. 23 Then Joseph said to the people, “Behold, I have today bought you and your land for Pharaoh; now, here is seed for you, and you may sow the land. 24 And it will be, at the harvest you shall give a (U)fifth to Pharaoh, and [x]four-fifths shall be your own for seed of the field and for your food and for those of your households and as food for your little ones.” 25 So they said, “You have kept us alive! Let us find favor in the sight of my lord, and we will be Pharaoh’s slaves.” 26 And Joseph made it a statute concerning the land of Egypt valid to this day, that Pharaoh should have the fifth; (V)only the land of the priests [y]did not become Pharaoh’s.
27 Now Israel [z]lived in the land of Egypt, [aa]in Goshen, and they (W)took possession of property in it and (X)were fruitful and became very numerous. 28 And Jacob lived in the land of Egypt (Y)seventeen years; so the days of Jacob, the years of his life, were 147 years.
29 Then (Z)the days for Israel to die drew near, and he called his son Joseph and said to him, “Please, if I have found favor in your sight, (AA)place now your hand under my thigh and (AB)deal with me in lovingkindness and truth. Please do not bury me in Egypt. 30 But I will (AC)lie down with my fathers, and you will carry me out of Egypt and bury me in (AD)their burial place.” And he said, “I will do as you have said.” 31 Then he said, “(AE)Swear to me.” So he swore to him. Then (AF)Israel bowed in worship at the head of the bed.

Genesis 47
New Catholic Bible
Chapter 47
1 Joseph went to inform Pharaoh, saying to him, “My father and my brothers with their flocks and herds and with all their possessions have come from the land of Canaan. They are now in the land of Goshen.” 2 He selected five of his brothers and presented them to Pharaoh.
3 Pharaoh said to his brothers, “What work do you do?”
They answered Pharaoh, “We shepherd the flocks of your servants, just as our fathers did.” 4 They went on to tell Pharaoh, “We came to sojourn in this land because there were no more pastures for the flocks of your servants. The famine is terrible in the land of Canaan. Please allow your servants to dwell in the land of Goshen.”
5 Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Your father and your brothers have come to you. 6 The land of Egypt is at your disposition. Have your father and your brothers settle in the best of the land. Let them dwell in the land of Goshen. If you know any of them as able men, place them in charge of my cattle.”
7 Joseph then introduced Jacob, his father, and presented him to Pharaoh. After Jacob had blessed Pharaoh, 8 Pharaoh asked him, “How old are you?”
9 Jacob answered Pharaoh, “One hundred and thirty are the years of my sojourning. Few and sad are the years of my life, and I have not reached the number of years that my fathers lived in their life journey.” 10 Then Jacob blessed Pharaoh and withdrew from his presence.
11 Joseph settled his father and his brothers and gave them property in Egypt, in the best part of the land, in the territory of Rameses, as Pharaoh had commanded. 12 Joseph provided for his father, his brothers, and all the family of his father, as much bread as was needed for each person.
13 Joseph’s Administration.[a] Now there was no bread in the whole land, for the famine was very severe. The land of Egypt and the land of Canaan wasted away because of the famine. 14 Joseph collected all the money there was in the land of Egypt and in the land of Canaan for the grain that they were buying. Joseph sent this money to Pharaoh. 15 When the money of the land of Egypt and the land of Canaan was gone, all the Egyptians came to Joseph and said, “Give us bread! Why should we die while you are watching? We do not have any more money.”
16 Joseph answered, “If you do not have any more money, give me your animals and I will give you bread in exchange for the animals.” 17 They therefore brought their animals to Joseph, and Joseph gave them bread in exchange for their horses and sheep, their oxen and their donkeys. That year he fed them with bread in exchange for their animals.
18 That year having ended, they came to him the next year and said to him, “We will not hide from my lord that our money is gone and our animals now belong to my lord. We have nothing for my lord except our own bodies and our land. 19 Why should we die with you looking on, we and our land? Buy us and our land in exchange for bread, and we will become servants to Pharaoh, we and our land. But give us something to plant so that we live and not die and the land not become a desert.”
20 Joseph acquired all the land of Egypt for Pharaoh, because the Egyptians sold their fields on account of the famine that weighed upon them. Thus the land became Pharaoh’s property. 21 As to the people, he moved them into the cities from one end to the other of the borders of Egypt. 22 Only the property which belonged to the priests was not bought, for the priests had a fixed allotment given to them by Pharaoh, and they ate the allotment that Pharaoh had given them. This is why they did not sell their land.
23 Joseph said to the people, “See, today I have acquired you and your land for Pharaoh. Here is seed, sow the land. 24 But when you harvest it, you will give a fifth of it to Pharaoh and four-fifths will be for you to sow the fields and feed yourselves and those who are in your household and to feed your children.”
25 They answered, “You have saved our lives! Let us only find favor before my lord and we will be servants of Pharaoh.”
26 Joseph made a law that is still in force up until this day for the land of Egypt, that a one-fifth portion must be given to Pharaoh. Only the land of the priests does not belong to Pharaoh.
27 Final Dispositions of Jacob. The Israelites settled in the land of Egypt, in the territory of Goshen. They had possessions and were fruitful and became very numerous.
28 Jacob lived in the land of Egypt for seventeen years and he lived for a total of one hundred and forty-seven years.
29 When the day of his death drew near, Israel summoned his son Joseph and told him, “If I have found favor in your sight, place your hand under my thigh and deal with me kindly and faithfully. Do not bury me in Egypt. 30 When I lie with my fathers, carry me from Egypt and bury me in their tomb.”
31 “I will do as you say,” he replied.
But Jacob demanded, “Swear it to me.” He answered, “I swear it.” And he swore it. Then Israel sank back on his pillow.
Footnotes
- Genesis 47:13 At the time of the New Empire (16th century B.C.), the greater part of the Egyptian farmers did not possess land; they were farmers of Pharaoh. To better illustrate Joseph’s competency, the author gives him credit for this regulation about the land, which surprised the nomadic Israelites.
