Genesis 47:28-50:26

28 Jacob lived in the land of Egypt seventeen years; so the days of Jacob, the years of his life, were one hundred forty-seven years.
29 When the time of Israel’s death drew near, he called his son Joseph and said to him, “If I have found favor with you, put your hand under my thigh and promise to deal loyally and truly with me. Do not bury me in Egypt. 30 When I lie down with my ancestors, carry me out of Egypt and bury me in their burial place.” He answered, “I will do as you have said.” 31 And he said, “Swear to me”; and he swore to him. Then Israel bowed himself on the head of his bed.
Jacob Blesses Joseph’s Sons
48 After this Joseph was told, “Your father is ill.” So he took with him his two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim. 2 When Jacob was told, “Your son Joseph has come to you,” he[a] summoned his strength and sat up in bed. 3 And Jacob said to Joseph, “God Almighty[b] appeared to me at Luz in the land of Canaan, and he blessed me, 4 and said to me, ‘I am going to make you fruitful and increase your numbers; I will make of you a company of peoples, and will give this land to your offspring after you for a perpetual holding.’ 5 Therefore your two sons, who were born to you in the land of Egypt before I came to you in Egypt, are now mine; Ephraim and Manasseh shall be mine, just as Reuben and Simeon are. 6 As for the offspring born to you after them, they shall be yours. They shall be recorded under the names of their brothers with regard to their inheritance. 7 For when I came from Paddan, Rachel, alas, died in the land of Canaan on the way, while there was still some distance to go to Ephrath; and I buried her there on the way to Ephrath” (that is, Bethlehem).
8 When Israel saw Joseph’s sons, he said, “Who are these?” 9 Joseph said to his father, “They are my sons, whom God has given me here.” And he said, “Bring them to me, please, that I may bless them.” 10 Now the eyes of Israel were dim with age, and he could not see well. So Joseph brought them near him; and he kissed them and embraced them. 11 Israel said to Joseph, “I did not expect to see your face; and here God has let me see your children also.” 12 Then Joseph removed them from his father’s knees,[c] and he bowed himself with his face to the earth. 13 Joseph took them both, Ephraim in his right hand toward Israel’s left, and Manasseh in his left hand toward Israel’s right, and brought them near him. 14 But Israel stretched out his right hand and laid it on the head of Ephraim, who was the younger, and his left hand on the head of Manasseh, crossing his hands, for Manasseh was the firstborn. 15 He blessed Joseph, and said,
“The God before whom my ancestors Abraham and Isaac walked,
the God who has been my shepherd all my life to this day,
16 the angel who has redeemed me from all harm, bless the boys;
and in them let my name be perpetuated, and the name of my ancestors Abraham and Isaac;
and let them grow into a multitude on the earth.”
17 When Joseph saw that his father laid his right hand on the head of Ephraim, it displeased him; so he took his father’s hand, to remove it from Ephraim’s head to Manasseh’s head. 18 Joseph said to his father, “Not so, my father! Since this one is the firstborn, put your right hand on his head.” 19 But his father refused, and said, “I know, my son, I know; he also shall become a people, and he also shall be great. Nevertheless his younger brother shall be greater than he, and his offspring shall become a multitude of nations.” 20 So he blessed them that day, saying,
So he put Ephraim ahead of Manasseh. 21 Then Israel said to Joseph, “I am about to die, but God will be with you and will bring you again to the land of your ancestors. 22 I now give to you one portion[f] more than to your brothers, the portion[g] that I took from the hand of the Amorites with my sword and with my bow.”
Jacob’s Last Words to His Sons
49 Then Jacob called his sons, and said: “Gather around, that I may tell you what will happen to you in days to come.
2 Assemble and hear, O sons of Jacob;
listen to Israel your father.
3 Reuben, you are my firstborn,
my might and the first fruits of my vigor,
excelling in rank and excelling in power.
4 Unstable as water, you shall no longer excel
because you went up onto your father’s bed;
then you defiled it—you[h] went up onto my couch!
5 Simeon and Levi are brothers;
weapons of violence are their swords.
6 May I never come into their council;
may I not be joined to their company—
for in their anger they killed men,
and at their whim they hamstrung oxen.
7 Cursed be their anger, for it is fierce,
and their wrath, for it is cruel!
I will divide them in Jacob,
and scatter them in Israel.
8 Judah, your brothers shall praise you;
your hand shall be on the neck of your enemies;
your father’s sons shall bow down before you.
9 Judah is a lion’s whelp;
from the prey, my son, you have gone up.
He crouches down, he stretches out like a lion,
like a lioness—who dares rouse him up?
10 The scepter shall not depart from Judah,
nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet,
until tribute comes to him;[i]
and the obedience of the peoples is his.
11 Binding his foal to the vine
and his donkey’s colt to the choice vine,
he washes his garments in wine
and his robe in the blood of grapes;
12 his eyes are darker than wine,
and his teeth whiter than milk.
13 Zebulun shall settle at the shore of the sea;
he shall be a haven for ships,
and his border shall be at Sidon.
14 Issachar is a strong donkey,
lying down between the sheepfolds;
15 he saw that a resting place was good,
and that the land was pleasant;
so he bowed his shoulder to the burden,
and became a slave at forced labor.
16 Dan shall judge his people
as one of the tribes of Israel.
17 Dan shall be a snake by the roadside,
a viper along the path,
that bites the horse’s heels
so that its rider falls backward.
18 I wait for your salvation, O Lord.
19 Gad shall be raided by raiders,
but he shall raid at their heels.
20 Asher’s[j] food shall be rich,
and he shall provide royal delicacies.
21 Naphtali is a doe let loose
that bears lovely fawns.[k]
22 Joseph is a fruitful bough,
a fruitful bough by a spring;
his branches run over the wall.[l]
23 The archers fiercely attacked him;
they shot at him and pressed him hard.
24 Yet his bow remained taut,
and his arms[m] were made agile
by the hands of the Mighty One of Jacob,
by the name of the Shepherd, the Rock of Israel,
25 by the God of your father, who will help you,
by the Almighty[n] who will bless you
with blessings of heaven above,
blessings of the deep that lies beneath,
blessings of the breasts and of the womb.
26 The blessings of your father
are stronger than the blessings of the eternal mountains,
the bounties[o] of the everlasting hills;
may they be on the head of Joseph,
on the brow of him who was set apart from his brothers.
27 Benjamin is a ravenous wolf,
in the morning devouring the prey,
and at evening dividing the spoil.”
28 All these are the twelve tribes of Israel, and this is what their father said to them when he blessed them, blessing each one of them with a suitable blessing.
Jacob’s Death and Burial
29 Then he charged them, saying to them, “I am about to be gathered to my people. Bury me with my ancestors—in the cave in the field of Ephron the Hittite, 30 in the cave in the field at Machpelah, near Mamre, in the land of Canaan, in the field that Abraham bought from Ephron the Hittite as a burial site. 31 There Abraham and his wife Sarah were buried; there Isaac and his wife Rebekah were buried; and there I buried Leah— 32 the field and the cave that is in it were purchased from the Hittites.” 33 When Jacob ended his charge to his sons, he drew up his feet into the bed, breathed his last, and was gathered to his people.
50 Then Joseph threw himself on his father’s face and wept over him and kissed him. 2 Joseph commanded the physicians in his service to embalm his father. So the physicians embalmed Israel; 3 they spent forty days in doing this, for that is the time required for embalming. And the Egyptians wept for him seventy days.
4 When the days of weeping for him were past, Joseph addressed the household of Pharaoh, “If now I have found favor with you, please speak to Pharaoh as follows: 5 My father made me swear an oath; he said, ‘I am about to die. In the tomb that I hewed out for myself in the land of Canaan, there you shall bury me.’ Now therefore let me go up, so that I may bury my father; then I will return.” 6 Pharaoh answered, “Go up, and bury your father, as he made you swear to do.”
7 So Joseph went up to bury his father. With him went up all the servants of Pharaoh, the elders of his household, and all the elders of the land of Egypt, 8 as well as all the household of Joseph, his brothers, and his father’s household. Only their children, their flocks, and their herds were left in the land of Goshen. 9 Both chariots and charioteers went up with him. It was a very great company. 10 When they came to the threshing floor of Atad, which is beyond the Jordan, they held there a very great and sorrowful lamentation; and he observed a time of mourning for his father seven days. 11 When the Canaanite inhabitants of the land saw the mourning on the threshing floor of Atad, they said, “This is a grievous mourning on the part of the Egyptians.” Therefore the place was named Abel-mizraim;[p] it is beyond the Jordan. 12 Thus his sons did for him as he had instructed them. 13 They carried him to the land of Canaan and buried him in the cave of the field at Machpelah, the field near Mamre, which Abraham bought as a burial site from Ephron the Hittite. 14 After he had buried his father, Joseph returned to Egypt with his brothers and all who had gone up with him to bury his father.
Joseph Forgives His Brothers
15 Realizing that their father was dead, Joseph’s brothers said, “What if Joseph still bears a grudge against us and pays us back in full for all the wrong that we did to him?” 16 So they approached[q] Joseph, saying, “Your father gave this instruction before he died, 17 ‘Say to Joseph: I beg you, forgive the crime of your brothers and the wrong they did in harming you.’ Now therefore please forgive the crime of the servants of the God of your father.” Joseph wept when they spoke to him. 18 Then his brothers also wept,[r] fell down before him, and said, “We are here as your slaves.” 19 But Joseph said to them, “Do not be afraid! Am I in the place of God? 20 Even though you intended to do harm to me, God intended it for good, in order to preserve a numerous people, as he is doing today. 21 So have no fear; I myself will provide for you and your little ones.” In this way he reassured them, speaking kindly to them.
Joseph’s Last Days and Death
22 So Joseph remained in Egypt, he and his father’s household; and Joseph lived one hundred ten years. 23 Joseph saw Ephraim’s children of the third generation; the children of Machir son of Manasseh were also born on Joseph’s knees.
24 Then Joseph said to his brothers, “I am about to die; but God will surely come to you, and bring you up out of this land to the land that he swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.” 25 So Joseph made the Israelites swear, saying, “When God comes to you, you shall carry up my bones from here.” 26 And Joseph died, being one hundred ten years old; he was embalmed and placed in a coffin in Egypt.

Giacobbe benedice i due figli di Giuseppe
48 (A)Dopo queste cose, fu detto a Giuseppe: «Ecco, tuo padre è ammalato». Allora egli prese con sé i suoi due figli, Manasse ed Efraim. 2 Giacobbe ne fu informato e gli fu detto: «Ecco, tuo figlio Giuseppe viene da te». Israele raccolse le sue forze e si mise seduto sul letto.
3 Giacobbe disse a Giuseppe: «Il Dio onnipotente mi apparve a Luz nel paese di Canaan, mi benedisse 4 e mi disse: “Ecco, io ti renderò fecondo, ti moltiplicherò, ti farò diventare una moltitudine di popoli e darò questo paese alla tua discendenza dopo di te, come proprietà perenne”. 5 Ora, i tuoi due figli che ti sono nati nel paese d’Egitto prima che io venissi da te in Egitto sono miei. Efraim e Manasse saranno miei, come Ruben e Simeone. 6 Ma i figli che hai generato dopo di loro saranno tuoi; essi saranno chiamati col nome dei loro fratelli, quanto alla loro eredità. 7 Quanto a me, mentre tornavo da Paddan, Rachele mi morì nel paese di Canaan, durante il viaggio, a qualche distanza da Efrata; e la seppellii in quel luogo, sulla via di Efrata, che è Betlemme».

Giuseppe li fece avvicinare a lui ed egli li baciò e li abbracciò. 11 Israele disse a Giuseppe: «Io non pensavo più di rivedere il tuo volto ed ecco che Dio mi ha dato di vedere anche la tua prole». 12 Giuseppe li allontanò dalle ginocchia di suo padre e si prostrò con la faccia a terra. 13 Poi Giuseppe li prese tutti e due: Efraim alla sua destra, alla sinistra d’Israele, e Manasse alla sua sinistra, alla destra d’Israele, e li fece avvicinare a lui. 14 E Israele stese la sua mano destra e la posò sul capo di Efraim, che era il più giovane, e posò la sua mano sinistra sul capo di Manasse, incrociando le mani; perché Manasse era il primogenito. 15 Benedisse Giuseppe e disse: «Il Dio alla cui presenza camminarono i miei padri Abraamo e Isacco, il Dio che è stato il mio pastore da quando esisto fino a questo giorno, 16 l’angelo che mi ha liberato da ogni male, benedica questi ragazzi! Siano chiamati con il mio nome, con il nome dei miei padri, Abraamo e Isacco, e si moltiplichino abbondantemente sulla terra!» 17 Quando Giuseppe vide che suo padre posava la mano destra sul capo di Efraim, ne ebbe dispiacere e prese la mano di suo padre per levarla dal capo di Efraim e metterla sul capo di Manasse. 18 Giuseppe disse a suo padre: «Non così, padre mio, perché questo è il primogenito; metti la tua mano destra sul suo capo». 19 Ma suo padre rifiutò e disse: «Lo so, figlio mio, lo so; anch’egli diventerà un popolo; anch’egli sarà grande; nondimeno il suo fratello più giovane sarà più grande di lui e la sua discendenza diventerà una moltitudine di nazioni». 20 In quel giorno li benedisse, dicendo: «Di te si servirà Israele per benedire[b], e dirà: “Dio ti faccia simile a Efraim e a Manasse!”». E mise Efraim prima di Manasse.
21 Poi Israele disse a Giuseppe: «Ecco, io muoio; ma Dio sarà con voi e vi farà ritornare nel paese dei vostri padri. 22 Io ti do una parte di più che ai tuoi fratelli: quella che conquistai dalle mani degli Amorei, con la mia spada e con il mio arco».
Benedizioni profetiche di Giacobbe
49 (C)Poi Giacobbe chiamò i suoi figli e disse: «Radunatevi, e vi annuncerò ciò che vi avverrà nei giorni a venire.
2 Radunatevi e ascoltate, o figli di Giacobbe! Date ascolto a Israele, vostro padre!
3 Ruben, tu sei il mio primogenito, la mia forza, la primizia del mio vigore, eminente in dignità ed eminente in forza.
4 Impetuoso come l’acqua, tu non avrai la preminenza, perché sei salito sul letto di tuo padre e hai profanato il mio letto su cui eri salito.
5 Simeone e Levi sono fratelli: le loro spade sono strumenti di violenza.
6 Non entri l’anima mia nel loro consiglio segreto, non si unisca la mia gloria al loro convegno! Perché nella loro ira hanno ucciso degli uomini e nella loro malvagità hanno tagliato i garretti ai tori.
7 Maledetta la loro ira, perché è stata violenta, e il loro furore, perché è stato crudele! Io li dividerò in Giacobbe e li disperderò in Israele.
8 Giuda, te loderanno i tuoi fratelli; la tua mano sarà sul collo dei tuoi nemici; i figli di tuo padre s’inchineranno davanti a te.
9 Giuda è un giovane leone; tu risali dalla preda, figlio mio; egli si china, s’accovaccia come un leone, come una leonessa: chi lo farà alzare?
10 Lo scettro non sarà rimosso da Giuda, né sarà allontanato il bastone del comando dai suoi piedi, finché venga colui al quale esso appartiene[c] e a cui ubbidiranno i popoli.
11 Egli lega il suo asinello alla vite e il puledro della sua asina alla vite migliore; lava la sua veste col vino e il suo mantello col sangue dell’uva.
12 Egli ha gli occhi rossi dal vino e i denti bianchi dal latte.
13 Zabulon abiterà sulla costa dei mari; sarà sulla costa dove approdano le navi, il suo fianco s’appoggerà a Sidone.
14 Issacar è un asino robusto[d] sdraiato fra due ovili.
15 Egli ha visto che il riposo è buono e che il paese è ameno; ha curvato la spalla per portare il peso, ed è stato costretto ai lavori forzati.
16 Dan giudicherà il suo popolo, come ogni altra tribù d’Israele.
17 Dan sarà una serpe sulla strada, una vipera cornuta sul sentiero, che morde i garretti del cavallo e fa cadere il cavaliere all’indietro.
18 Io aspetto la tua salvezza, o Signore!
19 Gad sarà assalito da bande armate, ma egli, a sua volta, le assalirà e le inseguirà.
20 Da Ascer verrà il pane saporito, ed egli fornirà delizie regali.
21 Neftali è una cerva messa in libertà; egli dice delle belle parole.
22 Giuseppe è un albero fruttifero; un albero fruttifero vicino a una sorgente; i suoi rami si stendono sopra il muro.
23 Gli arcieri lo hanno provocato, gli hanno lanciato frecce, lo hanno perseguitato,
24 ma il suo arco è rimasto saldo; le sue braccia e le sue mani sono state rinforzate dalle mani del Potente di Giacobbe, da colui che è il pastore e la roccia d’Israele,
25 dal Dio di tuo padre che ti aiuterà e dall’Altissimo che ti benedirà con benedizioni del cielo di sopra, con benedizioni dell’abisso che giace di sotto, con benedizioni delle mammelle e del grembo materno.
26 Le benedizioni di tuo padre sorpassano le benedizioni dei miei progenitori[e], fino a raggiungere la cima delle colline eterne. Esse saranno sul capo di Giuseppe, sulla fronte del principe dei suoi fratelli.
27 Beniamino è un lupo rapace; la mattina divora la preda e la sera spartisce le spoglie».
28 Tutti costoro sono gli antenati delle dodici tribù d’Israele; questo è ciò che il loro padre disse loro, quando li benedisse. Li benedisse, dando a ciascuno la sua benedizione particolare.
Morte e sepoltura di Giacobbe
29 (D)Poi diede loro i suoi ordini e disse: «Io sto per essere riunito al mio popolo. Seppellitemi con i miei padri nella grotta che è nel campo di Efron l’Ittita, 30 nella grotta che è nel campo di Macpela, di fronte a Mamre, nel paese di Canaan, la quale Abraamo comprò con il campo da Efron l’Ittita, come sepolcro di sua proprietà.
31 Qui furono sepolti Abraamo e sua moglie Sara; furono sepolti Isacco e Rebecca sua moglie, e qui io seppellii Lea. 32 Il campo e la grotta che vi si trova furono comprati presso i figli di Chet».
33 Quando Giacobbe ebbe finito di dare questi ordini ai suoi figli, ritirò i piedi nel letto, spirò e fu riunito al suo popolo.
50 (E)Allora Giuseppe si gettò sulla faccia di suo padre, pianse su di lui e lo baciò. 2 Poi Giuseppe ordinò ai medici che erano al suo servizio di imbalsamare suo padre; e i medici imbalsamarono Israele. 3 Ci vollero quaranta giorni, perché tanto è il tempo che si impiega a imbalsamare. E gli Egiziani lo piansero settanta giorni.
4 Quando i giorni del lutto fatto per lui furono passati, Giuseppe parlò alla casa del faraone, dicendo: «Se ora ho trovato grazia ai vostri occhi, fate giungere agli orecchi del faraone queste parole: 5 “Mio padre mi ha fatto giurare e mi ha detto: ‘Ecco, io muoio; seppelliscimi nel mio sepolcro, che mi sono scavato nel paese di Canaan’. Ora dunque, permetti che io salga e seppellisca mio padre; poi tornerò”». 6 Il faraone rispose: «Sali e seppellisci tuo padre come ti ha fatto giurare».
7 Allora Giuseppe salì a seppellire suo padre e con lui salirono tutti i servitori del faraone, gli anziani della sua casa e tutti gli anziani del paese d’Egitto, 8 tutta la casa di Giuseppe e i suoi fratelli e la casa di suo padre. Non lasciarono nella terra di Goscen che i loro bambini, le loro greggi e i loro armenti. 9 Con lui salirono pure carri e cavalieri, così da formare un corteo numerosissimo. 10 Quando giunsero all’aia di Atad, che è oltre il Giordano, vi furono grandi e profondi lamenti. Giuseppe fece a suo padre un lutto di sette giorni. 11 Quando gli abitanti del paese, i Cananei, videro il lutto dell’aia di Atad, dissero: «Questo è un grave lutto per gli Egiziani!» Perciò fu messo il nome di Abel-Misraim[f] a quell’aia, che è oltre il Giordano. 12 I figli di Giacobbe fecero per lui quello che egli aveva ordinato loro: 13 lo trasportarono nel paese di Canaan e lo seppellirono nella grotta del campo di Macpela, che Abraamo aveva comprato con il campo da Efron l’Ittita, come sepolcro di sua proprietà, di fronte a Mamre. 14 Giuseppe, dopo aver sepolto suo padre, tornò in Egitto con i suoi fratelli e con tutti quelli che erano saliti con lui a seppellire suo padre.
15 (F)I fratelli di Giuseppe, quando videro che il loro padre era morto, dissero: «Chi sa se Giuseppe non ci porterà odio e non ci renderà tutto il male che gli abbiamo fatto?» 16 Perciò mandarono a dire a Giuseppe: «Tuo padre, prima di morire, diede quest’ordine: 17 “Dite così a Giuseppe: ‘Perdona ora ai tuoi fratelli il loro misfatto e il loro peccato; perché ti hanno fatto del male’”. Ti prego, perdona dunque ora il misfatto dei servi del Dio di tuo padre!» Giuseppe, quando gli parlarono così, pianse. 18 I suoi fratelli vennero anch’essi, s’inchinarono[g] ai suoi piedi e dissero: «Ecco, siamo tuoi servi». 19 Giuseppe disse loro: «Non temete. Sono io forse al posto di Dio? 20 Voi avevate pensato del male contro di me, ma Dio ha pensato di convertirlo in bene per compiere quello che oggi avviene: per conservare in vita un popolo numeroso. 21 Ora dunque non temete. Io provvederò al sostentamento per voi e i vostri figli». Così li confortò e parlò al loro cuore.

Jakobs letzte Verfügung

2 Und man berichtete dem Jakob und sagte: Siehe, dein Sohn Joseph kommt zu dir! Und Israel machte sich stark und setzte sich auf im Bett.

11 Und Israel sprach zu Joseph: Dass ich dein Angesicht noch sehen darf, darum hätte ich nicht zu bitten gewagt; und nun, siehe, hat mich Gott sogar deine Nachkommen[a] sehen lassen!
12 Und Joseph nahm sie von seinen Knien und warf sich auf sein Angesicht zur Erde nieder.
13 Danach nahm Joseph sie beide, Ephraim in seine Rechte, zur Linken Israels, und Manasse in seine Linke, zur Rechten Israels, und brachte sie zu ihm.
14 Da streckte Israel seine Rechte aus und legte sie auf Ephraims Haupt, obwohl er der Jüngere war, seine Linke aber auf Manasses Haupt, indem er so seine Hände kreuzte, obwohl Manasse der Erstgeborene war.

18 Dabei sprach Joseph zu seinem Vater: Nicht so, mein Vater; denn dieser ist der Erstgeborene; lege deine Rechte auf sein Haupt!
19 Aber sein Vater weigerte sich und sprach: Ich weiß es, mein Sohn, ich weiß es wohl! Auch er soll zu einem Volk werden, und auch er soll groß sein; aber doch soll sein jüngerer Bruder größer werden, und sein Same wird eine Menge von Völkern sein!
20 So segnete er sie an jenem Tag und sprach: Mit dir wird man sich in Israel segnen und sagen: Gott mache dich wie Ephraim und Manasse! So setzte er Ephraim dem Manasse voran.
21 Und Israel sprach zu Joseph: Siehe, ich sterbe; aber Gott wird mit euch sein und wird euch zurückbringen in das Land eurer Väter.
22 Und ich schenke dir einen Bergrücken[c], den du vor deinen Brüdern voraushaben sollst; ich habe ihn den Amoritern mit meinem Schwert und meinem Bogen aus der Hand genommen.
Prophetische Segensworte für Jakobs Söhne

4 Du warst wie brodelndes Wasser,[d] du sollst nicht den Vorzug haben! Denn du bist auf das Bett deines Vaters gestiegen, du hast es dort entweiht; er stieg auf mein Lager!
5 Simeon und Levi sind Brüder, Waffen der Gewalt sind ihre Schwerter!

11 Er wird sein Füllen an den Weinstock binden und das Junge seiner Eselin an die Edelrebe; er wird sein Kleid im Wein waschen und seinen Mantel in Traubenblut;

13 Sebulon wird an der Küste des Meeres wohnen, am Anlegeplatz der Schiffe, und er lehnt sich an Zidon an.

27 Benjamin ist ein reißender Wolf; am Morgen verzehrt er Raub, und bis zum Abend verteilt er Beute.
28 Diese alle sind die zwölf Stämme Israels; und das ist es, was ihr Vater zu ihnen geredet und womit er sie gesegnet hat; und zwar segnete er jeden mit einem besonderen Segen.
Jakobs Tod
29 Und er gebot ihnen und sprach zu ihnen: Ich werde zu meinem Volk versammelt werden; begrabt mich bei meinen Vätern in der Höhle auf dem Acker Ephrons, des Hetiters,
30 in der Höhle auf dem Acker Machpelah, Mamre gegenüber, im Land Kanaan, wo Abraham den Acker als Erbbegräbnis gekauft hat von Ephron, dem Hetiter.
31 Dort hat man Abraham und seine Frau Sarah begraben; dort hat man Isaak begraben und seine Frau Rebekka, und dort habe ich auch Lea begraben;
32 der Acker und seine Höhle wurde den Hetitern abgekauft.
33 Als aber Jakob seine Befehle an seine Söhne vollendet hatte, zog er seine Füße aufs Bett zurück, verschied und wurde zu seinem Volk versammelt.
Jakobs Beerdigung im Land Kanaan
50 Da fiel Joseph auf das Angesicht seines Vaters und weinte über ihm und küsste ihn.
2 Danach befahl Joseph seinen Dienern, den Ärzten, dass sie seinen Vater einbalsamierten; und die Ärzte balsamierten Israel ein.
3 Und sie verwendeten darauf volle 40 Tage; denn so lange dauert die Einbalsamierung; aber beweint haben ihn die Ägypter 70 Tage lang.
4 Als aber die Tage der Trauer um ihn vorüber waren, redete Joseph mit dem Haus des Pharao und sprach: Wenn ich Gnade gefunden habe in euren Augen, so redet doch vor den Ohren des Pharao und sprecht:
5 Mein Vater hat einen Eid von mir genommen und zu mir gesagt: Siehe, ich sterbe; begrabe mich in meinem Grab, das ich mir im Land Kanaan angelegt habe! So lass mich nun hinaufziehen, dass ich meinen Vater begrabe und danach wiederkomme!
6 Und der Pharao sprach: Zieh hinauf und begrabe deinen Vater, wie er dich hat schwören lassen!
7 Da zog Joseph hinauf, um seinen Vater zu begraben; und mit ihm zogen alle Knechte des Pharao hinauf, alle Ältesten seines Hauses und alle Ältesten des Landes Ägypten;
8 dazu das ganze Haus Josephs und seine Brüder und das Haus seines Vaters; nur ihre Kinder, Schafe und Rinder ließen sie im Land Gosen zurück.
9 Es begleiteten ihn auch Wagen und Reiter, und es war ein großer Heerzug.
10 Als sie nun zur Tenne Atad kamen, die jenseits des Jordan liegt, hielten sie dort eine große und feierliche Totenklage; denn [Joseph] veranstaltete für seinen Vater eine siebentägige Trauer.
11 Als aber die Bewohner des Landes, die Kanaaniter, die Trauer bei der Tenne Atad sahen, sprachen sie: Die Ägypter halten da eine große Klage! Daher wurde der Ort, der jenseits des Jordan liegt, »Die Klage der Ägypter« genannt.
12 Seine Söhne aber handelten so, wie er ihnen befohlen hatte:
13 sie führten ihn ins Land Kanaan und begruben ihn in der Höhle des Ackers Machpelah, die Abraham samt dem Acker als Erbbegräbnis gekauft hatte von Ephron, dem Hetiter, gegenüber von Mamre.

Josephs Bruderliebe. Gottes Plan
15 Als nun Josephs Brüder sahen, dass ihr Vater gestorben war, sprachen sie: Joseph könnte gegen uns feindselig werden und uns all die Bosheit vergelten, die wir an ihm verübt haben!
16 Darum ließen sie Joseph sagen: Dein Vater befahl vor seinem Tod und sprach:
17 So sollt ihr zu Joseph sagen: Bitte, vergib doch deinen Brüdern die Schuld und ihre Sünde, dass sie so Böses an dir getan haben! So vergib nun den Knechten des Gottes deines Vaters ihre Schuld! Da weinte Joseph, als sie ihm das sagen ließen.
18 Dann gingen seine Brüder selbst hin und fielen vor ihm nieder und sprachen: Siehe, wir sind deine Knechte!
19 Aber Joseph sprach zu ihnen: Fürchtet euch nicht! Bin ich denn an Gottes Stelle?
20 Ihr gedachtet mir zwar Böses zu tun; aber Gott gedachte es gut zu machen,[k] um es so hinauszuführen, wie es jetzt zutage liegt, um ein zahlreiches Volk am Leben zu erhalten.
21 So fürchtet euch nun nicht; ich will euch und eure Kinder versorgen! Und er tröstete sie und redete freundlich mit ihnen.[l]
Josephs letzte Tage. Sein Tod
22 Und Joseph blieb in Ägypten, er und das Haus seines Vaters; und Joseph lebte 110 Jahre.
23 Und Joseph sah die Kinder Ephraims bis in das dritte Glied; auch die Kinder Machirs, des Sohnes Manasses, saßen noch auf Josephs Knien.[m]
24 Und Joseph sprach zu seinen Brüdern: Ich sterbe; aber Gott wird euch gewiss heimsuchen und euch aus diesem Land hinaufführen in das Land, das er Abraham, Isaak und Jakob zugeschworen hat.

21 Naftáli gyors lábú szarvasünő, szép szavakat hallat.
22 Termő fa ága József, termő fa ága forrás mellett, ágai átnyúlnak a kőfalon.
23 Ezért keserítik, nyilazzák, kergetik az íjászok.
24 De mozdulatlan marad íja, feszülnek izmos kezei Jákób erősségének kezétől, onnan, Izráel pásztorától, kősziklájától,
25 atyád Istenétől, ki megsegít téged, a Mindenhatótól, aki megáld téged az ég áldásával felülről, a lent elterülő mélység áldásaival, az emlők és anyaméh áldásaival.
26 Atyád áldásai erősebbek az örök hegyek áldásainál, az örök halmok gyönyörűségénél. Szálljanak József fejére, a testvérek közt megszenteltnek fejére.
27 Benjámin ragadozó farkas, reggel zsákmányt eszik, este prédát oszt.
28 Ez Izráel tizenkét törzse. Ezt mondta el nekik apjuk, amikor megáldotta őket; mindegyiket a ráillő áldással áldotta meg.
Jákób halála
29 Azután parancsot adott nekik, és ezt mondta: Ha majd elődeim mellé kerülök, atyáim mellé temessetek, a hettita Efrón mezején levő barlangba.
30 Abba a barlangba, amely Kánaán földjén van, Mamréval szemben, a makpélai mezőn, amelyet Ábrahám vett meg a mezővel együtt a hettita Efróntól, sírhelynek való birtokul.
31 Oda temették el Ábrahámot és feleségét, Sárát, oda temették el Izsákot és feleségét, Rebekát, oda temettem el Leát is.
32 A hettitáktól megvett tulajdon az a mező és a rajta levő barlang.
33 Amikor befejezte Jákób a fiainak szóló parancsokat, felhúzta lábait az ágyra, azután elhunyt, és elődei mellé került.

50 József apja arcára borult, siratta, és csókolgatta.
2 Azután József megparancsolta szolgáinak, az orvosoknak, hogy balzsamozzák be az apját. Az orvosok be is balzsamozták Izráelt.
3 Negyven nap telt el vele, mert ennyi ideig tart a bebalzsamozás. Az egyiptomiak pedig hetven napig siratták őt.
4 Amikor elmúlt a siratás ideje, így szólt József a fáraó háza népéhez: Ha jóindulattal vagytok hozzám, beszéljétek el ezt a fáraónak:
5 Az én apám megesketett, és ezt mondta: Én most már meghalok, de az én síromba temess el, amelyet Kánaán földjén ástam magamnak. Most azért el kell mennem, hogy eltemessem apámat, és utána visszatérek.
6 A fáraó ezt mondta: Menj el, temesd el apádat, ahogyan megesketett téged!
7 El is ment József, hogy apját eltemesse, és vele ment a fáraó minden szolgája, udvarának vénei és Egyiptom összes vénei,
8 meg József egész háza népe, testvérei és apjának a háza népe. Csak a gyermekeket, juhokat és marhákat hagyták Gósen földjén.
9 Még harci kocsik és lovasok is mentek vele: igen hatalmas sereg volt az.
10 Amikor eljutottak Góren-Háátádig, amely a Jordánon túl van, nagy és mélységes gyásszal gyászoltak ott; hét napig tartó gyászünnepet rendezett apjának József.
11 Amikor az ország lakosai, a kánaániak látták ezt a gyászünnepet Góren-Háátádnál, ezt mondták: Mély gyásza van Egyiptomnak. Ezért nevezték el azt a helyet a Jordánon túl Ábél-Micraimnak.
12 Úgy cselekedtek Jákóbbal a fiai, ahogyan megparancsolta nekik:
13 elvitték a fiai Kánaán földjére, és eltemették Mamréval szemben, a makpélai mezőn levő barlangba, amelyet Ábrahám a mezővel vásárolt sírhelynek való birtokul a hettita Efróntól.
14 Miután József eltemette apját, visszatért Egyiptomba testvéreivel és mindazokkal együtt, akik elmentek vele apja temetésére.
József nagylelkűsége testvéreihez
15 Amikor látták József bátyjai, hogy apjuk meghalt, ezt mondták: Hátha József bosszút forral ellenünk, és visszafizeti nekünk mindazt a rosszat, amit vele szemben elkövettünk!
16 Ezt üzenték tehát Józsefnek: Apád megparancsolta nekünk halála előtt:
17 Ezt mondjátok Józsefnek: Kérünk, bocsásd meg testvéreid hitszegését és vétkét, hogy rosszat követtek el ellened! Bocsásd meg hát azoknak a hitszegését, akik atyád Istenének a szolgái! József sírva fakadt, amikor ezt elmondták neki.
18 Oda is mentek hozzá a testvérei, leborultak előtte és ezt mondták: Szolgáid vagyunk!
19 De József így szólt hozzájuk: Ne féljetek! Vajon Isten vagyok én?
20 Ti rosszat terveztetek ellenem, de Isten terve jóra fordította azt, hogy úgy cselekedjék, ahogyan az ma van, és sok nép életét megtartsa.
21 Most hát ne féljetek, eltartalak én benneteket és gyermekeiteket! Így vigasztalta őket, és szívhez szólóan beszélt velük.
22 József Egyiptomban lakott, mind ő, mind apjának a háza népe. Száztíz esztendeig élt József,
23 és megláthatta József Efraim fiait harmadíziglen. Manassé fiának, Mákirnak is születtek gyermekei, és térdére vette őket József.
József halála
24 Azután József ezt mondta testvéreinek: Én meghalok, de Isten bizonyosan rátok tekint, és majd elvezet benneteket ebből az országból arra a földre, amelyet esküvel ígért meg Ábrahámnak, Izsáknak és Jákóbnak.
25 Meg is eskette József Izráel fiait, és azt mondta: Bizonyosan rátok tekint Isten, és akkor vigyétek el innen az én csontjaimat.
26 Amikor József száztíz éves korában meghalt, bebalzsamozták és koporsóba tették Egyiptomban.

28 Jacob vécut dix-sept ans en Egypte. La durée totale de sa vie fut de 147 ans. 29 Quand le jour de sa mort fut proche, il appela son fils, Joseph, et lui dit : Fais-moi une faveur : place, je te prie, ta main sous ma cuisse[a] et promets-moi d’agir envers moi avec amour et fidélité en ne m’enterrant pas en Egypte. 30 Quand j’aurai rejoint mes ancêtres, tu me transporteras hors d’Egypte pour m’ensevelir dans leur tombeau.
Joseph dit : J’agirai comme tu me l’as demandé.
31 Mais son père insista : Jure-le-moi.
Et il le lui jura. Alors Israël se prosterna au chevet de sa couche[b].
Jacob adopte les fils de Joseph et les bénit
48 Peu après cela, on vint prévenir Joseph que son père était malade. Il prit avec lui ses deux fils Manassé et Ephraïm. 2 On annonça à Jacob que son fils Joseph venait le voir. Israël rassembla ses forces et s’assit sur sa couche. 3 Jacob dit à Joseph : Le Dieu tout-puissant m’est apparu à Louz au pays de Canaan et il m’a béni[c]. 4 Il m’a dit : « Je te rends fécond et te multiplierai, je te ferai devenir une multitude de peuples et, après toi, je donnerai ce pays pour toujours en propriété à ta descendance. » 5 Et maintenant, les deux fils qui te sont nés en Egypte, avant mon arrivée ici, je les adopte comme miens. Ephraïm et Manassé seront mes fils au même titre que Ruben et Siméon[d]. 6 Quant aux enfants qui te naîtront après eux, ils seront à toi. C’est au nom de leurs frères aînés qu’ils recevront leur part d’héritage. 7 Car lorsque je revenais de Paddân-Aram, j’eus la douleur de voir Rachel mourir au pays de Canaan à peu de distance d’Ephrata. C’est là, sur le chemin d’Ephrata – qui s’appelle Bethléhem – que je l’ai enterrée.
8 Israël regarda les fils de Joseph et demanda : Qui est-ce ?
9 Joseph lui répondit : Ce sont les fils que Dieu m’a donnés dans ce pays.
– Fais-les approcher, je te prie, dit Jacob, pour que je les bénisse.
10 La vue d’Israël était affaiblie par l’âge de sorte qu’il n’y voyait plus. Il les fit donc approcher de lui et les embrassa. 11 Israël dit à Joseph : Je ne m’imaginais pas te revoir et voici que Dieu me fait voir même tes descendants.
12 Joseph reprit ses deux enfants d’entre les genoux[e] de son père et se prosterna face contre terre. 13 Puis il les prit tous les deux, Ephraïm à sa droite – donc à gauche d’Israël – et Manassé à sa gauche – donc à la droite de son père – et les fit approcher de lui. 14 Mais Israël tendit la main droite et la posa sur la tête d’Ephraïm, qui était le plus jeune, et sa main gauche sur la tête de Manassé. Il croisa donc ses mains, bien que Manassé fût l’aîné.
15 Il bénit Joseph et dit :
Que ces garçons |soient bénis par le Dieu
devant qui ont vécu mes pères |Abraham et Isaac,
le Dieu qui a pris soin de moi |comme un berger |depuis que j’existe et jusqu’à ce jour,
16 l’ange qui m’a délivré de tout mal.
Qu’ils perpétuent mon nom |et celui de mes pères |Abraham et Isaac !
Qu’ils aient beaucoup d’enfants |partout dans le pays.
17 Joseph remarqua que son père avait posé sa main droite sur la tête d’Ephraïm. Cela lui déplut et il prit la main de son père pour la faire passer de la tête d’Ephraïm sur celle de Manassé. 18 Il dit à son père : Pas ainsi, mon père, c’est celui-là l’aîné ; mets donc ta main droite sur sa tête.
19 Mais son père refusa et dit : Je sais, mon fils, je sais. Celui-là aussi deviendra un peuple ! Lui aussi sera grand. Pourtant son frère cadet sera plus grand que lui et sa descendance formera plusieurs peuples.
20 Ce jour-là, il les bénit ainsi :
Le peuple d’Israël vous nommera dans ses bénédictions en disant : « Que Dieu te rende semblable à Ephraïm et à Manassé ! »
Ainsi il plaça Ephraïm avant Manassé. 21 Puis Israël dit à Joseph : Je vais bientôt mourir. Dieu sera avec vous et vous fera retourner au pays de vos ancêtres. 22 Quant à moi, je te donne une part de plus qu’à tes frères : Sichem[f], que j’ai conquise sur les Amoréens avec mon épée et mon arc.
Jacob bénit les douze tribus d’Israël
49 Jacob convoqua ses fils et leur dit :
Réunissez-vous et je vous révélerai ce qui vous arrivera dans les temps à venir.
2 Rassemblez-vous et écoutez, |fils de Jacob !
Ecoutez ce que dit |Israël, votre père.
3 Ruben, tu es mon premier-né,
le premier fruit de ma vigueur, |du temps où j’étais plein de force,
toi, tu es supérieur |en dignité |et supérieur en force.
4 Bouillonnant comme l’eau, |tu n’auras pas le premier rang !
Car tu as profané |la couche de ton père, |en entrant dans mon lit[g].
5 Siméon et Lévi sont frères,
ils se sont mis d’accord |pour semer la violence.
6 Non, je ne veux pas m’associer |à leur complot !
Je mets un point d’honneur |à ne pas approuver |leurs délibérations !
Car mus par leur colère, |ils ont tué des hommes ;
poussés par leur caprice, |ils ont mutilé des taureaux[h].
7 Que leur colère soit maudite, |car elle est violente.
Maudit soit leur emportement, |car il est implacable !
Moi je les éparpillerai |au milieu de Jacob,
je les disperserai |en Israël.
8 O toi, Juda, |tes frères te rendront hommage,
ta main fera ployer |la nuque de tes ennemis,
et les fils de ton père |se prosterneront devant toi.
9 Oui, Juda est un jeune lion[i].
Mon fils, tu reviens de la chasse
et tu t’es accroupi |et couché comme un lion,
comme une lionne : |qui te ferait lever ?
10 Le sceptre ne s’écartera |pas de Juda,
et l’insigne de chef |ne sera pas ôté |d’entre ses pieds
jusqu’à la venue de celui |auquel ils appartiennent[j]
et à qui tous les peuples |rendront obéissance.
11 Son âne, il l’attache à la vigne,
et, à un cep de choix, |le petit de l’ânesse.
Il lave dans le vin |son vêtement,

12 Il a les yeux plus rouges que le vin,
les dents plus blanches que le lait[l].
13 Zabulon aura sa demeure |sur le rivage de la mer,

14 Issacar est un âne |très vigoureux
couché au beau milieu |de deux enclos.
15 Il a trouvé |que le repos est bon,
que le pays est agréable,
il tend l’épaule |pour porter le fardeau,
et il s’assujettit |à la corvée.
16 Dan jugera son peuple,
comme les autres tribus d’Israël.
17 Que Dan soit un serpent |sur le chemin,
qu’il soit une vipère |sur le sentier,
mordant les jarrets du cheval,
pour que le cavalier |en tombe à la renverse.
18 Je compte sur toi, Eternel |pour accorder la délivrance.
19 Gad agressé par une troupe |l’assaillira
et c’est sa troupe à lui |qui poursuivra la troupe adverse.
20 Aser a une riche nourriture.
C’est lui qui fournira |des mets dignes d’un roi.
21 Nephtali est semblable |à une biche en liberté |qui donne de beaux faons.
22 Joseph est un rameau fertile
d’un arbre plein de fruits |planté près d’une source.
Ses branches grimpent et s’élancent |par-dessus la muraille.
23 Des archers le provoquent, |le prennent à partie,
et le harcèlent de leurs flèches.
24 Mais son arc reste ferme
car ses bras pleins de force |conservent leur souplesse
grâce au secours |du Puissant de Jacob,
qui est le berger et le Roc |sur lequel Israël se fonde.
25 Oui, le Dieu de ton père |viendra à ton secours,
le Tout-Puissant te bénira.
Qu’il veuille te bénir d’en haut |par des pluies abondantes
et par des eaux d’en bas |où repose l’abîme,
par de nombreux enfants |et beaucoup de troupeaux.
26 Les bénédictions de ton père surpassent
celles des montagnes antiques
et les meilleurs produits |des collines anciennes.
Que ces bénédictions |soient sur la tête de Joseph,
et sur le front |du prince de ses frères[m] !
27 Benjamin est semblable |à un loup qui déchire.
Dès le matin, |il dévore sa proie,
et sur le soir encore, |répartit le butin.
28 Tous ceux-là ont formé les douze tribus d’Israël, c’est ainsi que leur parla leur père et qu’il les bénit, en prononçant pour chacun sa bénédiction propre.
La mort de Jacob
29 Jacob leur donna ses instructions : Je vais aller rejoindre mes ancêtres, enterrez-moi auprès de mes pères dans la caverne qui se trouve dans le champ d’Ephrôn le Hittite, 30 dans la caverne du champ de Makpéla, vis-à-vis de Mamré, au pays de Canaan, la caverne qu’Abraham a achetée, avec le champ, à Ephrôn le Hittite en propriété funéraire[n]. 31 C’est là qu’on a enterré Abraham et sa femme Sara ; c’est là qu’on a enterré Isaac et sa femme Rébecca. C’est là aussi que j’ai enterré Léa. 32 Le champ et la caverne qui s’y trouve ont été achetés aux Hittites.
33 Lorsque Jacob eut achevé d’énoncer ses instructions à ses fils, il ramena ses pieds sur son lit, expira et fut réuni à ses ancêtres[o].
L’enterrement de Jacob
50 Joseph se jeta sur le visage de son père, pleura sur lui et l’embrassa. 2 Puis il ordonna aux médecins qui étaient à son service de l’embaumer. Ceux-ci embaumèrent donc Israël. 3 Ils y passèrent quarante jours, le temps nécessaire à un embaumement, et les Egyptiens le pleurèrent pendant soixante-dix jours.
4 Quand les jours de deuil furent écoulés, Joseph dit aux hauts fonctionnaires de la cour du pharaon : Si vous voulez bien m’accorder cette faveur, portez à l’attention du pharaon 5 que mon père m’a fait prêter serment en disant : « Me voici sur le point de mourir ; j’ai fait creuser un tombeau au pays de Canaan, c’est là que vous m’enterrerez. » Maintenant donc, permets-moi d’y monter pour ensevelir mon père ; après quoi, je reviendrai.
6 Le pharaon répondit à Joseph : Va et enterre ton père, comme il te l’a fait jurer.
7 Joseph partit donc pour ensevelir son père, accompagné de tous les hauts fonctionnaires du pharaon, des dignitaires de sa cour et de tous les hauts responsables d’Egypte, 8 ainsi que de toute sa famille, et celle de ses frères, toute la famille de son père. Ils ne laissèrent dans le pays de Goshen que leurs enfants, leurs moutons, leurs chèvres et leurs bovins. 9 Joseph fit le voyage, escorté et de chars et de leur équipage ; le convoi ainsi formé était très impressionnant.
10 Lorsqu’ils furent arrivés à l’Aire d’Atad, située de l’autre côté du Jourdain, ils y célébrèrent de grandes funérailles très imposantes. Joseph mena deuil pour son père pendant sept jours. 11 En voyant ces funérailles dans l’Aire d’Atad, les Cananéens qui habitaient le pays dirent : Ce doit être un deuil important pour les Egyptiens.
C’est pourquoi on a nommé cet endroit de l’autre côté du Jourdain : Abel-Mitsraïm (Deuil de l’Egypte). 12 Les fils de Jacob firent donc ce que leur père leur avait demandé. 13 Ils le transportèrent au pays de Canaan et l’enterrèrent dans la caverne du champ de Makpéla qu’Abraham avait achetée avec le champ à Ephrôn le Hittite, comme propriété funéraire vis-à-vis de Mamré[p]. 14 Après avoir enterré son père, Joseph revint en Egypte avec ses frères et tous ceux qui l’avaient accompagné aux funérailles.
Le Dieu souverain
15 Maintenant que leur père était mort, les frères de Joseph se dirent : Qui sait, peut-être Joseph se mettra-t-il à nous haïr et à nous rendre tout le mal que nous lui avons fait.
16 Alors ils lui envoyèrent un messager pour lui dire : Avant de mourir, ton père nous a donné cet ordre : 17 « Vous demanderez à Joseph : Veuille, je te prie, pardonner le crime de tes frères et leur péché ; car ils t’ont fait beaucoup de mal. Oui, je te prie, pardonne maintenant la faute des serviteurs du Dieu de ton père. »
En recevant ce message, Joseph se mit à pleurer. 18 Ses frères vinrent en personne se jeter à ses pieds en disant : Nous sommes tes esclaves.
19 Mais Joseph leur dit : N’ayez aucune crainte ! Suis-je à la place de Dieu ? 20 Vous aviez projeté de me faire du mal, mais par ce que vous avez fait, Dieu a projeté du bien en vue d’accomplir ce qui se réalise aujourd’hui, pour sauver la vie à un peuple nombreux. 21 Maintenant donc, n’ayez aucune crainte, je pourvoirai à vos besoins ainsi qu’à ceux de vos enfants.
Ainsi il les rassura et toucha leur cœur par ses paroles.
La fin de la vie de Joseph
22 Joseph demeura en Egypte, ainsi que la famille de son père. Il vécut cent dix ans. 23 Il vit les descendants d’Ephraïm jusqu’à la troisième génération ; de plus, les enfants de Makir, fils de Manassé, furent placés sur ses genoux à leur naissance. 24 A la fin de sa vie, il dit aux siens : Je vais mourir, mais Dieu ne manquera pas d’intervenir en votre faveur et vous fera remonter de ce pays vers celui qu’il a promis par serment à Abraham, à Isaac et à Jacob.
25 Puis Joseph fit prêter serment aux Israélites en leur disant : Lorsque Dieu interviendra pour vous, vous emporterez d’ici mes ossements[q].
26 Joseph mourut à l’âge de cent dix ans ; on l’embauma, et on le déposa dans un sarcophage en Egypte.
