De eerste reis van Jozefs broers naar Egypte

42 Jakob hoorde dat er in Egypte graan was. Hij zei tegen zijn zonen: "Waarom zitten jullie elkaar aan te kijken? 2 Ik heb gehoord dat er in Egypte graan is. Ga daar graan voor ons kopen, dan blijven we in leven. Maar anders sterven we van de honger." 3 Toen reisden tien van Jozefs broers naar Egypte om graan te kopen. 4 Maar Jakob liet Benjamin, Jozefs broer, niet met de anderen meegaan. Want hij dacht: "Stel dat hem iets overkomt." 5 Zo kwamen ook de zonen van Israël graan kopen. Want er was ook hongersnood in Kanaän.

6 Jozef was de heerser van het land. Hij verkocht zelf het graan aan de mensen. Toen zijn broers aangekomen waren, bogen ze zich diep voor hem. 7 Zodra Jozef zijn broers zag, herkende hij hen. Maar hij deed alsof hij hen niet kende en zei kortaf tegen hen: "Waar komen jullie vandaan?" Ze antwoordden: "Uit Kanaän. We komen eten kopen." 8 Jozef herkende zijn broers wel, maar zij herkenden hem niet. 9 Toen herinnerde Jozef zich wat hij over hen gedroomd had. Hij zei tegen hen: "Jullie zijn spionnen. Jullie zijn gekomen om te kijken waar jullie gemakkelijk het land kunnen binnendringen." 10 Maar ze zeiden tegen hem: "Nee heer, we zijn gekomen om eten te kopen. 11 We zijn allemaal zonen van één man. We zijn eerlijke mensen. We zijn geen spionnen." 12 Maar hij zei tegen hen: "Nee, jullie zijn gekomen om te kijken waar jullie gemakkelijk het land kunnen binnendringen." 13 Toen zeiden ze: "Vroeger waren we met z'n twaalven. Twaalf zonen van één man in Kanaän. Onze jongste broer is nog bij onze vader, en één broer leeft niet meer." 14 Maar Jozef zei tegen hen: "Het is zoals ik jullie heb gezegd: jullie zijn spionnen. 15 Ik zweer bij de farao dat ik zal uitzoeken of jullie de waarheid spreken. Jullie mogen hier pas vertrekken als jullie jongste broer hier is gekomen. 16 Stuur dus één van jullie naar huis om jullie broer te halen. De anderen zullen hier gevangen blijven. Zo zal ik te weten komen of jullie de waarheid hebben gesproken. Maar als jullie broer niet komt, zijn jullie spionnen, dat zweer ik bij de farao." 17 En hij sloot hen allemaal drie dagen op in de gevangenis.

18 Na drie dagen zei Jozef tegen hen: "Doe wat ik zeg als jullie in leven willen blijven. Ik heb ontzag voor God. 19 Als jullie eerlijke mensen zijn, laat dan één van jullie in de gevangenis achterblijven. De anderen mogen naar huis gaan en graan meenemen. Dan hoeven jullie gezinnen geen honger te hebben. 20 Maar daarna moeten jullie je jongste broer meebrengen. Dan zal ik kunnen zien of jullie de waarheid hebben gesproken. Doen jullie dat niet, dan zal ik jullie laten doden." 21 Ze beloofden het hem. En ze zeiden tegen elkaar: "Luister, nu worden we gestraft voor wat we onze broer hebben aangedaan. Want we zagen hoe bang hij was. Hij smeekte ons om medelijden. Maar we hebben niet naar hem geluisterd." 22 Ruben zei: "Ik had jullie toch gezegd dat jullie de jongen geen kwaad moesten doen? Maar jullie wilden niet naar me luisteren. Nu is dit onze straf." 23 Ze wisten niet dat Jozef hen verstond, want hij gebruikte een tolk als hij met hen sprak. 24 Toen hij dat hoorde, liep Jozef bij hen weg en huilde. Daarna kwam hij weer terug en sprak met hen. Hij koos Simeon uit en liet hem voor de ogen van zijn broers vastbinden.

De broers gaan met graan naar huis

25 Jozef gaf bevel de zakken van zijn broers met graan te vullen. Ook zei hij dat het geld waarmee ze hadden betaald, er bovenop gelegd moest worden. Verder liet hij eten voor onderweg meegeven. 26 De broers laadden het graan op de ezels en vertrokken. 27 's Avonds gingen ze een herberg in om de nacht door te brengen. Eén van hen maakte zijn zak open om zijn ezel te eten te geven. Toen zag hij bovenop het graan het geld liggen. 28 Hij zei tegen zijn broers: "Kijk eens, daar is mijn geld! Het ligt bovenin de zak!" Toen werden ze vreselijk bang. Ze keken elkaar bevend aan. Ze zeiden tegen elkaar: "Wat heeft God ons nu aangedaan?"

29 Ze reisden terug naar hun vader Jakob in Kanaän. Ze vertelden hem wat er allemaal was gebeurd. 30 Ze zeiden: "Die man, de heer van het land, was heel kortaf tegen ons. Hij zei dat we spionnen waren. 31 Toen zeiden we tegen hem: 'Wij zijn eerlijke mensen. We zijn geen spionnen. 32 We waren met z'n twaalven. Twaalf zonen van één vader. Eén broer leeft niet meer, en de jongste is nog bij onze vader in Kanaän.' 33 Toen zei die man tegen ons: 'Jullie moeten bewijzen dat jullie eerlijke mensen zijn. Daarom blijft één van jullie hier. Jullie mogen graan meenemen voor jullie gezinnen en naar huis gaan. 34 Daarna brengen jullie je jongste broer bij mij. Dan weet ik dat jullie geen spionnen zijn, maar eerlijke mensen. Dan geef ik jullie je broer terug en mogen jullie vrij door het land reizen.' "

35 Toen maakten ze hun zakken leeg. En ze ontdekten dat bovenin elke zak, op het graan, de geldzak met hun geld lag. Ze werden bang. 36 Hun vader Jakob zei tegen hen: "Jullie beroven mij van mijn kinderen! Jozef is er niet meer. Simeon is in Egypte. Benjamin willen jullie meenemen. Mij overkomt ook alleen maar ellende!" 37 Toen zei Ruben tegen zijn vader: "Als ik Benjamin niet mee terugbreng, mag u mijn twee zonen doden. Vertrouw me. Ik zal ervoor zorgen dat hij bij u terugkomt." 38 Maar Jakob zei: "Nee, mijn zoon gaat niet met jullie mee. Zijn broer is al dood en nu is hij als enige overgebleven.[a] Als hem op reis iets overkomt, zal ik sterven van verdriet. En dat zal dan jullie schuld zijn!"

Joseph’s Brothers Sent to Egypt

42 Now (A)Jacob saw that there was grain in Egypt, and Jacob said to his sons, “Why are you staring at one another?” 2 Then he said, “Behold, (B)I have heard that there is grain in Egypt; go down there and buy some for us from there, (C)so that we may live and not die.” 3 So ten brothers of Joseph went down to buy grain from Egypt. 4 But Jacob did not send Joseph’s brother (D)Benjamin with his brothers, for he said, “(E)Lest any harm befall him.” 5 So the sons of Israel came to buy grain among those who were coming, (F)for the famine was in the land of Canaan also.

6 Now (G)Joseph was the one in power over the land; he was the one who sold to all the people of the land. And Joseph’s brothers came and (H)bowed down to him with their [a]faces to the ground. 7 And Joseph saw his brothers and recognized them, but he disguised himself to them and (I)spoke to them harshly. And he said to them, “Where have you come from?” And they said, “From the land of Canaan, to buy food.”

8 But Joseph recognized his brothers, although (J)they did not recognize him. 9 And Joseph (K)remembered the dreams which he [b]had about them and said to them, “You are spies; you have come to look at the [c]nakedness of the land.” 10 Then they said to him, “No, (L)my lord, but your servants have come to buy food. 11 We are all sons of one man; we are (M)honest men; your servants are not spies.” 12 And he said to them, “No, but you have come to look at the [d]nakedness of our land!” 13 So they said, “Your servants are twelve brothers in all, the sons of one man in the land of Canaan; and behold, the youngest is with (N)our father today, and (O)one is no more.” 14 And Joseph said to them, “It is as I said [e]to you, you are spies; 15 by this you will be tested: (P)by the life of Pharaoh, you shall not go from this place unless your youngest brother comes here! 16 Send one of you that he may get your brother, while you remain confined, that your words may be tested, whether there is (Q)truth in you. But if not, by the life of Pharaoh, surely you are spies.” 17 Then he put them all together in (R)prison for three days.

18 And Joseph said to them on the third day, “Do this and live, for (S)I fear God: 19 if you are honest men, let one of your brothers be confined in [f]your prison; but as for the rest of you, go, bring grain for the famine of your households, 20 and (T)bring your youngest brother to me, so your words may be proven true, and you will not die.” And they did so. 21 Then they said to one another, “(U)Surely we are guilty concerning our brother because we saw the distress of his soul when he begged us, yet we would not listen; therefore this distress has come upon us.” 22 And Reuben answered them, saying, “(V)Did I not tell you, saying, ‘Do not sin against the boy’; yet you would not listen? (W)So also his blood, behold, it is required of us.” 23 Now they did not know that Joseph was listening, for there was an interpreter between them. 24 And he turned away from them and (X)wept. Then he returned to them and spoke to them. And he (Y)took Simeon from them and bound him before their eyes. 25 (Z)Then Joseph gave a command to fill their bags with grain and to restore every man’s money in his sack and to give them provisions for the journey. And thus it was done for them.

26 So they loaded their donkeys with their grain and went from there. 27 Then one of them opened his sack to give his donkey fodder at the lodging place. And he saw his (AA)money; and behold, it was in the mouth of his sack. 28 So he said to his brothers, “My money has been returned, and behold, it is even in my sack.” And their hearts [g]sank, and they turned [h]trembling to one another, saying, “(AB)What is this that God has done to us?”

Jacob Is Bereaved

29 Then they came to their father Jacob in the land of Canaan and told him all that had happened to them, saying, 30 “The man, the lord of the land, (AC)spoke harshly with us and took us for spies of the country. 31 So we said to him, ‘We are (AD)honest men; we are not spies. 32 We are twelve brothers, sons of our father; one is no more, and the youngest is with our father today in the land of Canaan.’ 33 Then the man, the lord of the land, said to us, ‘(AE)By this I will know that you are honest men: leave one of your brothers with me and take grain for the famine of your households, and go. 34 But bring your youngest brother to me that I may know that you are not spies, but [i]honest men. I will give your brother to you, and you may (AF)trade in the land.’”

35 Now it happened that they were emptying their sacks, and behold, (AG)every man’s bundle of money was in his sack; and they and their father saw their bundles of money, and they feared. 36 And their father Jacob said to them, “You have (AH)bereaved me of my children: Joseph is no more, and Simeon is no more, and you would take Benjamin; all these things are against me.” 37 Then Reuben spoke to his father, saying, “You may put my two sons to death if I do not bring him back to you; put him in my hand, and I will return him to you.” 38 But [j]Jacob said, “My son shall not go down with you; for his (AI)brother is dead, and he alone remains. (AJ)If harm should befall him on the journey on which you are going, then you will (AK)bring my gray hair down to Sheol in sorrow.”

Joseph’s Brothers Go to Egypt

42 When Jacob learned that there was grain in Egypt,(A) he said to his sons, “Why do you just keep looking at each other?” 2 He continued, “I have heard that there is grain in Egypt. Go down there and buy some for us,(B) so that we may live and not die.”(C)

3 Then ten of Joseph’s brothers went down to buy grain(D) from Egypt. 4 But Jacob did not send Benjamin,(E) Joseph’s brother, with the others, because he was afraid that harm might come to him.(F) 5 So Israel’s sons were among those who went to buy grain,(G) for there was famine in the land of Canaan(H) also.(I)

6 Now Joseph was the governor of the land,(J) the person who sold grain to all its people.(K) So when Joseph’s brothers arrived, they bowed down to him with their faces to the ground.(L) 7 As soon as Joseph saw his brothers, he recognized them, but he pretended to be a stranger and spoke harshly to them.(M) “Where do you come from?”(N) he asked.

“From the land of Canaan,” they replied, “to buy food.”

8 Although Joseph recognized his brothers, they did not recognize him.(O) 9 Then he remembered his dreams(P) about them and said to them, “You are spies!(Q) You have come to see where our land is unprotected.”(R)

10 “No, my lord,(S)” they answered. “Your servants have come to buy food.(T) 11 We are all the sons of one man. Your servants(U) are honest men,(V) not spies.(W)”

12 “No!” he said to them. “You have come to see where our land is unprotected.”(X)

13 But they replied, “Your servants(Y) were twelve brothers, the sons of one man, who lives in the land of Canaan.(Z) The youngest is now with our father, and one is no more.”(AA)

14 Joseph said to them, “It is just as I told you: You are spies!(AB) 15 And this is how you will be tested: As surely as Pharaoh lives,(AC) you will not leave this place unless your youngest brother comes here.(AD) 16 Send one of your number to get your brother;(AE) the rest of you will be kept in prison,(AF) so that your words may be tested to see if you are telling the truth.(AG) If you are not, then as surely as Pharaoh lives, you are spies!(AH)” 17 And he put them all in custody(AI) for three days.

18 On the third day, Joseph said to them, “Do this and you will live, for I fear God:(AJ) 19 If you are honest men,(AK) let one of your brothers stay here in prison,(AL) while the rest of you go and take grain back for your starving households.(AM) 20 But you must bring your youngest brother to me,(AN) so that your words may be verified and that you may not die.” This they proceeded to do.

21 They said to one another, “Surely we are being punished because of our brother.(AO) We saw how distressed he was when he pleaded with us for his life, but we would not listen; that’s why this distress(AP) has come on us.”

22 Reuben replied, “Didn’t I tell you not to sin against the boy?(AQ) But you wouldn’t listen! Now we must give an accounting(AR) for his blood.”(AS) 23 They did not realize(AT) that Joseph could understand them,(AU) since he was using an interpreter.

24 He turned away from them and began to weep,(AV) but then came back and spoke to them again. He had Simeon taken from them and bound before their eyes.(AW)

25 Joseph gave orders to fill their bags with grain,(AX) to put each man’s silver back in his sack,(AY) and to give them provisions(AZ) for their journey.(BA) After this was done for them, 26 they loaded their grain on their donkeys(BB) and left.

27 At the place where they stopped for the night one of them opened his sack to get feed for his donkey,(BC) and he saw his silver in the mouth of his sack.(BD) 28 “My silver has been returned,” he said to his brothers. “Here it is in my sack.”

Their hearts sank(BE) and they turned to each other trembling(BF) and said, “What is this that God has done to us?”(BG)

29 When they came to their father Jacob in the land of Canaan,(BH) they told him all that had happened to them.(BI) They said, 30 “The man who is lord over the land spoke harshly to us(BJ) and treated us as though we were spying on the land.(BK) 31 But we said to him, ‘We are honest men; we are not spies.(BL) 32 We were twelve brothers, sons of one father. One is no more, and the youngest is now with our father in Canaan.’(BM)

33 “Then the man who is lord over the land said to us, ‘This is how I will know whether you are honest men: Leave one of your brothers here with me, and take food for your starving households and go.(BN) 34 But bring your youngest brother to me so I will know that you are not spies but honest men.(BO) Then I will give your brother back to you,(BP) and you can trade[a] in the land.(BQ)’”

35 As they were emptying their sacks, there in each man’s sack was his pouch of silver!(BR) When they and their father saw the money pouches, they were frightened.(BS) 36 Their father Jacob said to them, “You have deprived me of my children. Joseph is no more and Simeon is no more,(BT) and now you want to take Benjamin.(BU) Everything is against me!(BV)”

37 Then Reuben said to his father, “You may put both of my sons to death if I do not bring him back to you. Entrust him to my care,(BW) and I will bring him back.”(BX)

38 But Jacob said, “My son will not go down there with you; his brother is dead(BY) and he is the only one left. If harm comes to him(BZ) on the journey you are taking, you will bring my gray head down to the grave(CA) in sorrow.(CB)”
