As soon as Joseph saw the men, he knew that they were his brothers. But he spoke to them as if they were strangers. He did not speak to them in a kind way. He asked them, ‘Where do you come from?’ They replied, ‘We come from the land of Canaan. We have come here to buy food.’ Joseph recognized his brothers, but they did not recognize him.[a]

Then Joseph remembered the dream that he had dreamed about his brothers. He said to them, ‘You have come here secretly to see how your people can attack our land.’

  1. 42:8 Joseph was only 17 years old when they sold him as a slave. He now looked like an Egyptian. That is why they did not recognize him. Probably he spoke to his brothers in the language of Egypt. Then a man who could speak Hebrew told the brothers what Joseph had said.

As soon as Joseph saw his brothers, he recognized them, but he pretended to be a stranger and spoke harshly to them.(A) “Where do you come from?”(B) he asked.

“From the land of Canaan,” they replied, “to buy food.”
