46 Joseph was thirty years old when he (A)stood before Pharaoh king of Egypt. And Joseph went out from the presence of Pharaoh, and went throughout all the land of Egypt. 47 Now in the seven plentiful years the ground brought forth [a]abundantly. 48 So he gathered up all the food of the seven years which were in the land of Egypt, and laid up the food in the cities; he laid up in every city the food of the fields which surrounded them. 49 Joseph gathered very much grain, (B)as the sand of the sea, until he stopped counting, for it was immeasurable.

50 (C)And to Joseph were born two sons before the years of famine came, whom Asenath, the daughter of Poti-Pherah priest of On, bore to him. 51 Joseph called the name of the firstborn [b]Manasseh: “For God has made me forget all my toil and all my (D)father’s house.” 52 And the name of the second he called [c]Ephraim: “For God has caused me to be (E)fruitful in the land of my affliction.”

53 Then the seven years of plenty which were in the land of Egypt ended, 54 (F)and the seven years of famine began to come, (G)as Joseph had said. The famine was in all lands, but in all the land of Egypt there was bread. 55 So when all the land of Egypt was famished, the people cried to Pharaoh for bread. Then Pharaoh said to all the Egyptians, “Go to Joseph; (H)whatever he says to you, do.” 56 The famine was over all the face of the earth, and Joseph opened [d]all the storehouses and (I)sold to the Egyptians. And the famine became severe in the land of Egypt. 57 (J)So all countries came to Joseph in Egypt to (K)buy grain, because the famine was severe in all lands.

Joseph’s Brothers Go to Egypt

42 When (L)Jacob saw that there was grain in Egypt, Jacob said to his sons, “Why do you look at one another?” And he said, “Indeed I have heard that there is grain in Egypt; go down to that place and buy for us there, that we may (M)live and not die.”

So Joseph’s ten brothers went down to buy grain in Egypt. But Jacob did not send Joseph’s brother Benjamin with his brothers, for he said, (N)“Lest some calamity befall him.” And the sons of Israel went to buy grain among those who journeyed, for the famine was (O)in the land of Canaan.

Now Joseph was governor (P)over the land; and it was he who sold to all the people of the land. And Joseph’s brothers came and (Q)bowed down before him with their faces to the earth. Joseph saw his brothers and recognized them, but he acted as (R)a stranger to them and spoke [e]roughly to them. Then he said to them, “Where do you come from?”

And they said, “From the land of Canaan to buy food.”

So Joseph recognized his brothers, but they did not recognize him. Then Joseph (S)remembered the dreams which he had dreamed about them, and said to them, “You are spies! You have come to see the [f]nakedness of the land!”

46 And Joseph [is] a son of thirty years in his standing before Pharaoh king of Egypt, and Joseph goeth out from the presence of Pharaoh, and passeth over through all the land of Egypt;

47 and the land maketh in the seven years of plenty by handfuls.

48 And he gathereth all the food of the seven years which have been in the land of Egypt, and putteth food in the cities; the food of the field which [is] round about [each] city hath he put in its midst;

49 and Joseph gathereth corn as sand of the sea, multiplying exceedingly, until that he hath ceased to number, for there is no number.

50 And to Joseph were born two sons before the year of famine cometh, whom Asenath daughter of Poti-Pherah, priest of On, hath borne to him,

51 and Joseph calleth the name of the first-born Manasseh: `for, God hath made me to forget all my labour, and all the house of my father;'

52 and the name of the second he hath called Ephraim: `for, God hath caused me to be fruitful in the land of mine affliction.'

53 And the seven years of plenty are completed which have been in the land of Egypt,

54 and the seven years of famine begin to come, as Joseph said, and famine is in all the lands, but in all the land of Egypt hath been bread;

55 and all the land of Egypt is famished, and the people crieth unto Pharaoh for bread, and Pharaoh saith to all the Egyptians, `Go unto Joseph; that which he saith to you -- do.'

56 And the famine has been over all the face of the land, and Joseph openeth all [places] which have [corn] in them, and selleth to the Egyptians; and the famine is severe in the land of Egypt,

57 and all the earth hath come to Egypt, to buy, unto Joseph, for the famine was severe in all the earth.

42 And Jacob seeth that there is corn in Egypt, and Jacob saith to his sons, `Why do you look at each other?'

he saith also, `Lo, I have heard that there is corn in Egypt, go down thither, and buy for us from thence, and we live and do not die;'

and the ten brethren of Joseph go down to buy corn in Egypt,

and Benjamin, Joseph's brother, Jacob hath not sent with his brethren, for he said, `Lest mischief meet him.'

And the sons of Israel come to buy in the midst of those coming, for the famine hath been in the land of Canaan,

and Joseph is the ruler over the land, he who is selling to all the people of the land, and Joseph's brethren come and bow themselves to him -- face to the earth.

And Joseph seeth his brethren, and discerneth them, and maketh himself strange unto them, and speaketh with them sharp things, and saith unto them, `From whence have ye come?' and they say, `From the land of Canaan -- to buy food.'

And Joseph discerneth his brethren, but they have not discerned him,

and Joseph remembereth the dreams which he dreamed of them, and saith unto them, `Ye [are] spies; to see the nakedness of the land ye have come.'

46 Now Joseph was (A)thirty years old when he [a]stood in the presence of Pharaoh, king of Egypt. And Joseph went out from the presence of Pharaoh and went through all the land of Egypt. 47 During the seven years of plenty the land produced [b]abundantly. 48 So he collected all the food of these seven years which occurred in the land of Egypt and put the food in the cities; he put in every city the food from its own surrounding fields. 49 Joseph stored up grain [c]in great abundance like the sand of the sea, until he stopped [d]measuring it, for it was [e]beyond measure.

The Sons of Joseph

50 Now before the year of famine came, (B)two sons were born to Joseph, whom Asenath, the daughter of Potiphera, priest of [f]On, bore to him. 51 Joseph named the firstborn [g]Manasseh; “For,” he said, “God has made me forget all my trouble and all of my father’s household.” 52 And he named the second [h]Ephraim; “For,” he said, “(C)God has made me fruitful in the land of my affliction.”

53 When the seven years of plenty which had taken place in the land of Egypt came to an end, 54 and (D)the seven years of famine began to come, just as Joseph had said, then there was famine in all the lands; but in all the land of Egypt there was bread. 55 So when all the land of Egypt suffered famine, the people cried out to Pharaoh for bread; and Pharaoh said to all the Egyptians, “Go to Joseph; (E)whatever he says to you, you shall do.” 56 When the famine was spread over the entire face of the earth, then Joseph opened all [i]the storehouses and sold grain to the Egyptians; and the famine was severe in the land of Egypt. 57 Then the people of all the earth came to Egypt to buy grain from Joseph, because (F)the famine was severe in all the earth.

Joseph’s Brothers Sent to Egypt

42 Now (G)Jacob saw that there was grain in Egypt, and Jacob said to his sons, “Why are you staring at one another?” Then he said, “Look, (H)I have heard that there is grain in Egypt; go down there and buy some for us from [j]that place, (I)so that we may live and not die.” So ten of Joseph’s brothers went down to buy grain from Egypt. But Jacob did not send Joseph’s brother (J)Benjamin with his brothers, for he said, “(K)I am afraid that harm may happen to him.” So the sons of Israel came to buy grain among those who were coming, (L)because the famine was also in the land of Canaan.

Now (M)Joseph was the ruler over the land; he was the one who sold grain to all the people of the land. And Joseph’s brothers came and (N)bowed down to him with their faces to the ground. When Joseph saw his brothers, he recognized them, but he disguised himself to them and (O)spoke to them harshly. He said to them, “Where have you come from?” And they said, “From the land of Canaan, to buy food.”

But Joseph had recognized his brothers, although (P)they did not recognize him. And Joseph (Q)remembered the dreams which he [k]had about them, and he said to them, “You are spies; you have come to look at the [l]undefended parts of our land.”
