Chapter 40
A Prophet in Suffering.[a] 1 Some time later, the cupbearer of the king of Egypt and the baker of the king of Egypt offended their master. 2 Pharaoh was angry with his two eunuchs, the chief cupbearer and the chief baker, 3 and he put them in prison in the care of the captain of the guard in the prison where Joseph was being held. 4 The captain of the guard assigned Joseph to their service. They thus remained in prison for a while.
5 Now, the same night, the cupbearer and the baker of the king of Egypt, who were in prison, both had a dream, each one having his own dream that had its own meaning.
6 The next morning Joseph came to them and saw that they were troubled. 7 He asked the eunuchs of Pharaoh who were with him in prison, in the house of his master, “Why are you so sad today?”
8 They said, “We had a dream, but no one can interpret it.”
Joseph said to them, “Does not God have the power of interpreting? Tell your dreams to me.”
9 The chief cupbearer told his dream to Joseph and said, “In my dream I was standing in front of a vine 10 on which there were three branches. As soon as it sprouted, the flowers bloomed, and it brought forth clusters of grapes. 11 I was holding Pharaoh’s cup in my hand. I took the grapes and squeezed their juice into Pharaoh’s cup. I then gave Pharaoh the cup.”
12 Joseph told him, “Here is the interpretation. The three branches are three days. 13 In three days, Pharaoh will lift up your head and restore you to your office, and you will give Pharaoh his cup just as you once did when you were his cupbearer. 14 When you are happy again, please remember that I was with you. Do me this favor: speak of me to Pharaoh and get me out of here. 15 I was unjustly carried away from the land of the Hebrews, and even here I have done nothing for which I should have been placed in this dungeon.”
16 The chief baker, seeing that Joseph had given a favorable interpretation, said to him, “As for me, in my dream I was standing with three baskets of white bread on my head. 17 In the baskets on my head were all different kinds of food for Pharaoh that would be prepared by a baker. But birds ate the food from the baskets that I had on my head.”
18 Joseph answered and said, “Here is the interpretation: the three baskets are three days. 19 In three days, Pharaoh will lift off your head and have you impaled; and the birds will eat away your flesh.”
20 Three days later, it was the birthday of Pharaoh, and there was a banquet for all his ministers. He lifted up the head of the chief cupbearer and lifted off the head of the chief baker before all his ministers. 21 He restored the chief cupbearer to his office as cupbearer, so that he would hand the cup to Pharaoh. 22 He had the chief baker impaled, just as Joseph had said in his interpretation.
23 But the cupbearer did not remember Joseph; he forgot him.

40 Nakon nekog vremena, peharnik[a] i pekar egipatskog kralja ogriješili su se o svoga gospodara, kralja Egipta. 2 Faraon se razljutio na svoju dvojicu službenika—glavnog peharnika i glavnog pekara— 3 i stavio ih u pritvor u kuću zapovjednika straže, gdje se nalazio Josip. 4 Zapovjednik straže odredio je Josipu da ih poslužuje. I dugo su vremena ostali u pritvoru. 5 Jedne noći i peharnik i pekar egipatskog kralja sanjali su san, i svaki je san imao svoje značenje. 6 Kad je Josip ujutro došao k njima, vidio je da su zabrinuti 7 pa ih je upitao: »Zašto ste danas tako zabrinuti?«
8 »Sanjali smo snove«, odgovorili su, »a nema nikog da nam ih protumači.«
Tada im je Josip rekao: »Bog može protumačiti snove! Ispričajte mi što ste sanjali.«
9 I glavni je peharnik ispričao Josipu svoj san: »U snu sam pred sobom vidio trs 10 i na njemu tri izdanka. I samo što je propupao, već je i procvjetao i sazreli mu grozdovi. 11 U ruci mi je bio faraonov pehar pa sam uzeo ono grožđe, istisnuo sok u faraonov pehar i stavio mu ga u ruku.«
12 »Evo što to znači«, rekao mu je Josip. »Tri izdanka su tri dana. 13 Za tri dana faraon će te pomilovati i vratiti na tvoj položaj. Tako ćeš mu stavljati pehar u ruku kao i prije, kad si bio njegov peharnik. 14 I sjeti me se kad ti bude dobro. Budi ljubazan i spomeni me faraonu, da izađem iz ovog zatvora. 15 Jer, silom sam odveden iz zemlje Hebreja, a ni ovdje nisam ničim zaslužio da me stave u zatvor.«
16 Kad je glavni pekar vidio da je Josipovo tumačenje povoljno, rekao mu je: »I ja sam sanjao san: Na glavi su mi bile tri košare za kruh. 17 U gornjoj su košari bile razne vrste peciva za faraona, ali su ga ptice jele iz košare na mojoj glavi.«
18 »Evo, što to znači«, rekao mu je Josip. »Tri košare su tri dana. 19 Za tri dana faraon će ti odrubiti glavu. Objesit će tvoje tijelo na stup pa će ptice jesti tvoje meso.«
20 Trećeg je dana bio faraonov rođendan. Priredio je gozbu za sve svoje službenike te pred njih izveo glavnog peharnika i glavnog pekara. 21 Glavnog je peharnika vratio u službu, pa je on ponovo stavljao pehar u faraonovu ruku, 22 a glavnog je pekara objesio. Sve se dogodilo baš kao što im je Josip protumačio. 23 No glavni peharnik nije se sjetio faraonu spomenuti Josipa. Sasvim je zaboravio na njega.

40 And it came to pass after these things, that the butler of the king of Egypt and his baker had offended their lord the king of Egypt.
2 And Pharaoh was wroth against two of his officers, against the chief of the butlers, and against the chief of the bakers.
3 And he put them in ward in the house of the captain of the guard, into the prison, the place where Joseph was bound.
4 And the captain of the guard charged Joseph with them, and he served them: and they continued a season in ward.
5 And they dreamed a dream both of them, each man his dream in one night, each man according to the interpretation of his dream, the butler and the baker of the king of Egypt, which were bound in the prison.
6 And Joseph came in unto them in the morning, and looked upon them, and, behold, they were sad.
7 And he asked Pharaoh's officers that were with him in the ward of his lord's house, saying, Wherefore look ye so sadly to day?
8 And they said unto him, We have dreamed a dream, and there is no interpreter of it. And Joseph said unto them, Do not interpretations belong to God? tell me them, I pray you.
9 And the chief butler told his dream to Joseph, and said to him, In my dream, behold, a vine was before me;
10 And in the vine were three branches: and it was as though it budded, and her blossoms shot forth; and the clusters thereof brought forth ripe grapes:
11 And Pharaoh's cup was in my hand: and I took the grapes, and pressed them into Pharaoh's cup, and I gave the cup into Pharaoh's hand.
12 And Joseph said unto him, This is the interpretation of it: The three branches are three days:
13 Yet within three days shall Pharaoh lift up thine head, and restore thee unto thy place: and thou shalt deliver Pharaoh's cup into his hand, after the former manner when thou wast his butler.
14 But think on me when it shall be well with thee, and shew kindness, I pray thee, unto me, and make mention of me unto Pharaoh, and bring me out of this house:
15 For indeed I was stolen away out of the land of the Hebrews: and here also have I done nothing that they should put me into the dungeon.
16 When the chief baker saw that the interpretation was good, he said unto Joseph, I also was in my dream, and, behold, I had three white baskets on my head:
17 And in the uppermost basket there was of all manner of bakemeats for Pharaoh; and the birds did eat them out of the basket upon my head.
18 And Joseph answered and said, This is the interpretation thereof: The three baskets are three days:
19 Yet within three days shall Pharaoh lift up thy head from off thee, and shall hang thee on a tree; and the birds shall eat thy flesh from off thee.
20 And it came to pass the third day, which was Pharaoh's birthday, that he made a feast unto all his servants: and he lifted up the head of the chief butler and of the chief baker among his servants.
21 And he restored the chief butler unto his butlership again; and he gave the cup into Pharaoh's hand:
22 But he hanged the chief baker: as Joseph had interpreted to them.
23 Yet did not the chief butler remember Joseph, but forgat him.

Giuseppe interpreta i sogni degli ufficiali del Faraone
40 Dopo queste cose il coppiere del re d'Egitto e il panettiere offesero il loro padrone, il re d'Egitto. 2 Il faraone si adirò contro i suoi due eunuchi, contro il capo dei coppieri e contro il capo dei panettieri, 3 e li fece mettere in carcere nella casa del comandante delle guardie, nella prigione dove Giuseppe era detenuto. 4 Il comandante delle guardie assegnò loro Giuseppe, perché li servisse. Così essi restarono nel carcere per un certo tempo.
5 Ora, in una medesima notte, il coppiere e il panettiere del re d'Egitto, che erano detenuti nella prigione, ebbero tutti e due un sogno, ciascuno il suo sogno, che aveva un significato particolare.
6 Alla mattina Giuseppe venne da loro e vide che erano afflitti. 7 Allora interrogò gli eunuchi del faraone che erano con lui in carcere nella casa del suo padrone e disse: «Perché quest'oggi avete la faccia così triste?». 8 Gli dissero: «Abbiamo fatto un sogno e non c'è chi lo interpreti». Giuseppe disse loro: «Non è forse Dio che ha in suo potere le interpretazioni? Raccontatemi dunque».
9 Allora il capo dei coppieri raccontò il suo sogno a Giuseppe e gli disse: «Nel mio sogno, ecco mi stava davanti una vite, 10 sulla quale erano tre tralci; non appena essa cominciò a germogliare, apparvero i fiori e i suoi grappoli maturarono gli acini. 11 Io avevo in mano il calice del faraone; presi gli acini, li spremetti nella coppa del faraone e diedi la coppa in mano al faraone».
12 Giuseppe gli disse: «Eccone la spiegazione: i tre tralci sono tre giorni. 13 Fra tre giorni il faraone solleverà la tua testa e ti restituirà nella tua carica e tu porgerai il calice al faraone, secondo la consuetudine di prima, quando eri suo coppiere. 14 Ma se, quando sarai felice, ti vorrai ricordare che io sono stato con te, fammi questo favore: parla di me al faraone e fammi uscire da questa casa. 15 Perché io sono stato portato via ingiustamente dal paese degli Ebrei e anche qui non ho fatto nulla perché mi mettessero in questo sotterraneo».
16 Allora il capo dei panettieri, vedendo che aveva dato un'interpretazione favorevole, disse a Giuseppe: «Quanto a me, nel mio sogno mi stavano sulla testa tre canestri di pane bianco 17 e nel canestro che stava di sopra era ogni sorta di cibi per il faraone, quali si preparano dai panettieri. Ma gli uccelli li mangiavano dal canestro che avevo sulla testa».
18 Giuseppe rispose e disse: «Questa è la spiegazione: i tre canestri sono tre giorni. 19 Fra tre giorni il faraone solleverà la tua testa e ti impiccherà ad un palo e gli uccelli ti mangeranno la carne addosso».
20 Appunto al terzo giorno - era il giorno natalizio del faraone - egli fece un banchetto a tutti i suoi ministri e allora sollevò la testa del capo dei coppieri e la testa del capo dei panettieri in mezzo ai suoi ministri. 21 Restituì il capo dei coppieri al suo ufficio di coppiere, perché porgesse la coppa al faraone, 22 e invece impiccò il capo dei panettieri, secondo l'interpretazione che Giuseppe aveva loro data. 23 Ma il capo dei coppieri non si ricordò di Giuseppe e lo dimenticò.
