Then Adam had sexual intercourse with Eve his wife, and she conceived and gave birth to a son, Cain (meaning “I have created”). For, as she said, “With God’s help, I have created a man!” Her next child was his brother, Abel.

Abel became a shepherd, while Cain was a farmer. At harvest time Cain brought the Lord a gift of his farm produce, and Abel brought the fatty cuts of meat from his best lambs, and presented them to the Lord. And the Lord accepted Abel’s offering, but not Cain’s. This made Cain both dejected and very angry, and his face grew dark with fury.

“Why are you angry?” the Lord asked him. “Why is your face so dark with rage? It can be bright with joy if you will do what you should! But if you refuse to obey, watch out. Sin is waiting to attack you, longing to destroy you. But you can conquer it!”

One day Cain suggested to his brother, “Let’s go out into the fields.” And while they were together there, Cain attacked and killed his brother.

But afterwards the Lord asked Cain, “Where is your brother? Where is Abel?”

“How should I know?” Cain retorted. “Am I supposed to keep track of him wherever he goes?”

10 But the Lord said, “Your brother’s blood calls to me from the ground. What have you done? 11 You are hereby banished from this ground which you have defiled with your brother’s blood. 12 No longer will it yield crops for you, even if you toil on it forever! From now on you will be a fugitive and a tramp upon the earth, wandering from place to place.”

13 Cain replied to the Lord, “My punishment is greater than I can bear. 14 For you have banished me from my farm and from you, and made me a fugitive and a tramp; and everyone who sees me will try to kill me.”

15 The Lord replied, “They won’t kill you, for I will give seven times your punishment to anyone who does.” Then the Lord put an identifying mark on Cain as a warning not to kill him. 16 So Cain went out from the presence of the Lord and settled in the land of Nod, east of Eden.

17 Then Cain’s wife conceived and presented him with a baby son named Enoch; so when Cain founded a city, he named it Enoch, after his son.

18 Enoch was the father of[a] Irad; Irad was the father of Mehujael; Mehujael was the father of Methusael; Methusael was the father of Lamech.

19 Lamech married two wives—Adah and Zillah. 20 To Adah was born a baby named Jabal. He became the first of the cattlemen and those living in tents. 21 His brother’s name was Jubal, the first musician—the inventor of the harp and flute.[b] 22 To Lamech’s other wife, Zillah, was born Tubal-cain. He opened the first foundry[c] forging instruments of bronze and iron.

23 One day Lamech said to Adah and Zillah, “Listen to me, my wives. I have killed a youth who attacked and wounded me. 24 If anyone who kills Cain will be punished seven times, anyone taking revenge against me for killing that youth should be punished seventy-seven times!”

25 Later on Eve gave birth to another son and named him Seth (meaning “Granted”); for, as Eve put it, “God has granted me another son for the one Cain killed.” 26 When Seth grew up, he had a son and named him Enosh. It was during his lifetime that men first began to call themselves “the Lord’s people.”[d]

Footnotes

  1. Genesis 4:18 Enoch was the father of, or “the ancestor of,” and so also in the remainder of the verse.
  2. Genesis 4:21 the inventor of the harp and flute, literally, “the father of all such as handle the harp and pipe.”
  3. Genesis 4:22 He opened the first foundry, literally, “He was the father of all metal workers in bronze and iron.”
  4. Genesis 4:26 It was during . . . “the Lord’s people,” literally, “This man was the first to invoke the name of Jehovah.”

And the man knew Eve his wife, and she conceiveth and beareth Cain, and saith, `I have gotten a man by Jehovah;'

and she addeth to bear his brother, even Abel. And Abel is feeding a flock, and Cain hath been servant of the ground.

And it cometh to pass at the end of days that Cain bringeth from the fruit of the ground a present to Jehovah;

and Abel, he hath brought, he also, from the female firstlings of his flock, even from their fat ones; and Jehovah looketh unto Abel and unto his present,

and unto Cain and unto his present He hath not looked; and it is very displeasing to Cain, and his countenance is fallen.

And Jehovah saith unto Cain, `Why hast thou displeasure? and why hath thy countenance fallen?

Is there not, if thou dost well, acceptance? and if thou dost not well, at the opening a sin-offering is crouching, and unto thee its desire, and thou rulest over it.'

And Cain saith unto Abel his brother, [`Let us go into the field;'] and it cometh to pass in their being in the field, that Cain riseth up against Abel his brother, and slayeth him.

And Jehovah saith unto Cain, `Where [is] Abel thy brother?' and he saith, `I have not known; my brother's keeper -- I?'

10 And He saith, `What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother's blood is crying unto Me from the ground;

11 and now, cursed [art] thou from the ground, which hath opened her mouth to receive the blood of thy brother from thy hand;

12 when thou tillest the ground, it doth not add to give its strength to thee -- a wanderer, even a trembling one, thou art in the earth.'

13 And Cain saith unto Jehovah, `Greater is my punishment than to be borne;

14 lo, Thou hast driven me to-day from off the face of the ground, and from Thy face I am hid; and I have been a wanderer, even a trembling one, in the earth, and it hath been -- every one finding me doth slay me.'

15 And Jehovah saith to him, `Therefore -- of any slayer of Cain sevenfold it is required;' and Jehovah setteth to Cain a token that none finding him doth slay him.

16 And Cain goeth out from before Jehovah, and dwelleth in the land, moving about east of Eden;

17 and Cain knoweth his wife, and she conceiveth, and beareth Enoch; and he is building a city, and he calleth the name of the city, according to the name of his son -- Enoch.

18 And born to Enoch is Irad; and Irad hath begotten Mehujael; and Mehujael hath begotten Methusael; and Methusael hath begotten Lamech.

19 And Lamech taketh to himself two wives, the name of the one Adah, and the name of the second Zillah.

20 And Adah beareth Jabal, he hath been father of those inhabiting tents and purchased possessions;

21 and the name of his brother [is] Jubal, he hath been father of every one handling harp and organ.

22 And Zillah she also bare Tubal-Cain, an instructor of every artificer in brass and iron; and a sister of Tubal-Cain [is] Naamah.

23 And Lamech saith to his wives: -- `Adah and Zillah, hear my voice; Wives of Lamech, give ear [to] my saying: For a man I have slain for my wound, Even a young man for my hurt;

24 For sevenfold is required for Cain, And for Lamech seventy and sevenfold.'

25 And Adam again knoweth his wife, and she beareth a son, and calleth his name Seth, `for God hath appointed for me another seed instead of Abel:' for Cain had slain him.

26 And to Seth, to him also a son hath been born, and he calleth his name Enos; then a beginning was made of preaching in the name of Jehovah.

Qaabiil Iyo Haabiil

Ninkiina naagtiisii Xaawa ahayd buu u tegey; wayna uuraysatay, oo Qaabiil bay dhashay, oo waxay tidhi, Wiil baan ku helay Rabbiga caawimaaddiisa. Dabadeedna waxay dhashay walaalkiis Haabiil. Haabiilna wuxuu ahaa adhijir, laakiin Qaabiil wuxuu ahaa beerfale. Maalmo dabadeed waxay noqotay in Qaabiil qurbaan ahaan Rabbiga ugu keenay midhihii dhulka. Haabiilna wuxuu wax uga keenay curadyadii adhigiisa iyo baruurtoodiiba. Rabbiguna wuu eegay Haabiil iyo qurbaankiisii; laakiinse Qaabiil iyo qurbaankiisii Rabbigu ma uu eegin. Qaabiilna aad buu u cadhooday, wejigiisiina wuu madoobaaday. Oo Rabbigu wuxuu ku yidhi Qaabiil, Maxaad u cadhoonaysaa? Maxaase wejigaagu u madoobaaday? Haddaad wax wanaagsan samaysid, sow laguma aqbaleen? Haddaadan wax wanaagsan samaynse, dembi illinkuu kuugu gabbanayaa; doonistiisuna aday noqon doontaa, adiguna waa inaad xukuntid isaga. Qaabiilna wuxuu ku yidhi walaalkiis Haabiil, Ina keen, aynu duurka tagnee. Waxaana dhacday, markii ay duurka joogeen, in Qaabiil walaalkiis Haabiil ku kacay oo dilay isagii. Rabbiguna wuxuu Qaabiil ku yidhi, Walaalkaa Haabiil meeh? Kolkaasuu yidhi, Ma aqaan: ma anigaa ah walaalkay ilaaliyihiisa? 10 Kolkaasaa Ilaah ku yidhi, Maxaad samaysay? Codkii dhiiggii walaalkaa ayaa dhulka iiga dhawaaqayaye. 11 Oo haatan waad ka habaaran tahay dhulkii afkiisa u kala qaaday si uu dhiiggii walaalkaa gacantaada uga helo. 12 Kolkii aad dhulka beeratid, wax badan kuuma dhali doono. Waxaad dhulka ku noqon doontaa mid carcarara oo warwareega. 13 Qaabiilna wuxuu Rabbiga ku yidhi, Taqsiirtaydu waa ka sii badan tahay wax aan qaadi karo. 14 Bal eeg, maanta dhulkaad iga eriday, wejigaagana waan ka qarsoonaan doonaa, waxaanan dhulka ku noqon doonaa mid carcarara oo warwareega; waxaana dhici doonta in kii i arkaaba i dili doono. 15 Oo Rabbigu wuxuu ku yidhi isagii, Sidaas daraaddeed ku alla kii dila Qaabiil, waxaa looga aargudan doonaa toddoba labanlaab. Rabbiguna calaamad buu u sameeyey Qaabiil, si aanu ku alla kii arkaaba u dilin. 16 Qaabiilna Rabbiga hortiisuu ka tegey, oo wuxuu degay dalkii la odhan jiray Nood, oo xagga bari oo Ceeden ku yiil.

17 Qaabiilna naagtiisuu u tegey; wayna uuraysatay, oo waxay dhashay Enoog. Wuxuuna dhisay magaalo, oo magaaladiina wuxuu ku magacaabay magicii wiilkiisii Enoog. 18 Enoogna waxaa u dhashay Ciiraad, Ciiraadna wuxuu dhalay Mexuuya'el, Mexuuya'elna wuxuu dhalay Metuusha'el, Metuusha'elna wuxuu dhalay Lameg. 19 Lamegna wuxuu guursaday laba naagood; mid magaceedu wuxuu ahaa Caadah, tan kalena magaceedu wuxuu ahaa Sillah. 20 Caadahna waxay dhashay Yaabaal: isna wuxuu ahaa aabbihii kuwa teendhooyinka deggan oo xoolaha leh. 21 Magaca walaalkiisna wuxuu ahaa Yuubaal; isna wuxuu ahaa aabbihii kuwa kataaradda iyo biibiilaha garaaca. 22 Sillahna waxay dhashay Tuubalqayin oo ahaa mid tumi jiray alaabtii naxaasta iyo birta ahayd oo dhan; Tuubalqayin walaashiisna waxay ahayd Nacmah. 23 Lamegna wuxuu naagihiisii ku yidhi:

Caadah iyo Sillahay, codkayga maqla;
Lameg naagihiisow, hadalkayga dhegaysta;
Nin baan u dilay dhaawicid uu i dhaawacay aawadeed,
Iyo nin dhallinyar dhufashadii uu wax igu dhuftay aawadeed.
24 Haddii Qaabiil toddoba labanlaab looga aargudan lahaa,
Runtii Lameg waa in toddoba iyo toddobaatan labanlaab looga aar gutaa.

25 Aadanna naagtiisii mar kale ayuu u tegey; waxayna dhashay wiil, magiciisiina waxay u bixisay Seed, iyadoo leh, Ilaah abuur kaluu ii soo dhigay Haabiil meeshiisii; waayo, Qaabiil baa dilay isagii. 26 Seedna waxaa u dhashay wiil, magiciisiina wuxuu u bixiyey Enoos; markaasaa dadkii waxay bilaabeen inay Rabbiga ku baryaan magiciisa.
