Jakob ger Esau gåvor
32 Jakob startade på nytt sin resa och Guds änglar kom för att möta honom. 2 När han såg det sa han: ”Detta är Guds läger”, och han kallade platsen för Machanajim[a].
3 Jakob skickade nu budbärare till sin bror Esau i Seir, dvs. i landet Edom. 4 ”Säg så här till min herre, Esau”, sa Jakob. ”Så här hälsar din tjänare Jakob. Jag har bott tillsammans med Laban tills nu, och 5 jag äger oxar, åsnor och får och har många tjänare och tjänarinnor. Jag har skickat detta budskap till dig, min herre, för att jag hoppas att du kommer att vara välvilligt inställd mot oss.”
6 Budbärarna återvände med nyheten att Esau redan var på väg för att möta Jakob tillsammans med fyrahundra man. 7 Jakob blev alldeles utom sig av skräck. Han delade sin familj och hjordarna och kamelerna i två grupper. 8 ”Om Esau anfaller den ena gruppen, kan den andra gruppen kanske fly”, tänkte han.
9 Sedan bad Jakob: ”Min farfar Abrahams och min far Isaks Gud, du Herre, som sa till mig att återvända till mina släktingars land och som sa att du skulle vara god mot mig, 10 jag är ovärdig all den nåd och trofasthet som du har visat mig, din tjänare. När jag gick över Jordan ägde jag ju inget annat än min vandringsstav, och nu har jag dessa två läger. 11 Rädda mig nu från min bror Esaus hand! Jag är rädd att han kommer för att slå ihjäl mig och mödrarna och barnen. 12 Du har ju lovat att göra gott mot mig och föröka mina ättlingar tills de blir som sanden på stranden, så många att man inte kan räkna dem.”
13 Jakob stannade där han var under natten och valde av sin egendom ut en gåva åt sin bror Esau: 14 200 getter, 20 bockar, 200 tackor, 20 baggar, 15 30 kameler med deras föl, 40 kor, 10 tjurar, 20 åsneston och 10 åsnehingstar.
16 Han lämnade dem till sina tjänare, var hjord för sig, och sa till dem att gå före honom och hålla avstånd mellan varje hjord. 17 Sedan instruerade han tjänaren som gick först: ”När min bror Esau möter dig och frågar: ’Vems tjänare är du? Vart är du på väg? Vems djur är dessa?’ 18 så ska du svara: ’De tillhör din tjänare Jakob och är en gåva till hans herre Esau. Han kommer själv strax efter oss!’ ”
19 Jakob gav samma instruktion till den andra och tredje tjänaren, och sedan till alla de andra som drev hjordarna. Alla skulle säga samma sak till Esau när de mötte honom. 20 De skulle också säga: ”Din tjänare Jakob kommer strax efter oss”. Han ville nämligen blidka Esau med gåvorna, innan han mötte honom ansikte mot ansikte. ”Kanske kommer han då att vara vänlig mot mig”, tänkte Jakob. 21 Gåvan sändes alltså i förväg medan Jakob tillbringade natten i lägret.
Jakobs brottningskamp
22 Under natten steg Jakob upp, och tog sina båda hustrur, de två slavinnorna och sina elva söner och gick över vid Jabboks vadställe. 23 Han förde dem tillsammans med alla sina ägodelar över floden. 24 Han blev kvar där ensam, och en man brottades med honom till gryningen. 25 När denne såg att han inte kunde vinna kampen, slog han till Jakob på höften så att den gick ur led när de brottades med varandra.
26 Sedan sa han: ”Släpp mig, för dagen gryr!” Men Jakob svarade: ”Jag tänker inte släppa dig förrän du välsignar mig.” 27 ”Vad heter du?” frågade mannen[b]. ”Jakob”, svarade han. 28 ”Du ska inte längre heta Jakob”, sa mannen. ”Du ska heta Israel[c], för du har kämpat med både Gud och människor och segrat.” 29 ”Säg mig, vad heter du?” frågade Jakob. ”Varför frågar du om mitt namn?” sa mannen till honom. Och han välsignade honom där.
30 Jakob kallade platsen Penuel[d], för han sa: ”Jag har sett Gud ansikte mot ansikte, och ändå är jag fortfarande vid liv.” 31 När solen gick upp lämnade han Penuel. Han haltade på grund av sin höftskada. 32 Det är därför som Israels folk än i dag inte äter nervsträngen[e] i höftmuskeln, för det var på höftbenet, höftnerven, som mannen slog Jakob.

9 Y dijo Jacob: Dios de mi padre Abraham, y Dios de mi padre Isaac, Jehová, que me dijiste: Vuélvete á tu tierra y á tu parentela, y yo te haré bien.
10 Menor soy que todas las misericordias, y que toda la verdad que has usado para con tu siervo; que con mi bordón pasé este Jordán, y ahora estoy sobre dos cuadrillas.
11 Líbrame ahora de la mano de mi hermano, de la mano de Esaú, porque le temo; no venga quizá, y me hiera la madre con los hijos.
12 Y tú has dicho: Yo te haré bien, y pondré tu simiente como la arena del mar, que no se puede contar por la multitud.
13 Y durmió allí aquella noche, y tomó de lo que le vino á la mano un presente para su hermano Esaú.
14 Doscientas cabras y veinte machos de cabrío, doscientas ovejas y veinte carneros,
15 Treinta camellas paridas, con sus hijos, cuarenta vacas y diez novillos, veinte asnas y diez borricos.
16 Y entrególo en mano de sus siervos, cada manada de por sí; y dijo á sus siervos: Pasad delante de mí, y poned espacio entre manada y manada.
17 Y mandó al primero, diciendo: Si Esaú mi hermano te encontrare, y te preguntare, diciendo ¿De quién eres? ¿y adónde vas? ¿y para quién es esto que llevas delante de ti?
18 Entonces dirás: Presente es de tu siervo Jacob, que envía á mi señor Esaú; y he aquí también él viene tras nosotros.
19 Y mandó también al segundo, y al tercero, y á todos los que iban tras aquellas manadas, diciendo: Conforme á esto hablaréis á Esaú, cuando le hallareis.
20 Y diréis también: He aquí tu siervo Jacob viene tras nosotros. Porque dijo: Apaciguaré su ira con el presente que va delante de mí, y después veré su rostro: quizá le seré acepto.
21 Y pasó el presente delante de él; y él durmió aquella noche en el campamento.
22 Y levantóse aquella noche, y tomó sus dos mujeres, y sus dos siervas, y sus once hijos, y pasó el vado de Jaboc.
23 Tomólos pues, y pasólos el arroyo, é hizo pasar lo que tenía.
24 Y quedóse Jacob solo, y luchó con él un varón hasta que rayaba el alba.
25 Y como vió que no podía con él, tocó en el sitio del encaje de su muslo, y descoyuntóse el muslo de Jacob mientras con él luchaba.
26 Y dijo: Déjame, que raya el alba. Y él dijo: No te dejaré, si no me bendices.
27 Y él le dijo: ¿Cuál es tu nombre? Y él respondió: Jacob.
28 Y él dijo: No se dirá más tu nombre Jacob, sino Israel: porque has peleado con Dios y con los hombres, y has vencido.
29 Entonces Jacob le preguntó, y dijo: Declárame ahora tu nombre. Y él respondió: ¿Por qué preguntas por mi nombre? Y bendíjolo allí.
30 Y llamó Jacob el nombre de aquel lugar Peniel: porque vi á Dios cara á cara, y fué librada mi alma.
31 Y salióle el sol pasado que hubo á Peniel; y cojeaba de su anca.

Jacob Prepares to Meet Esau
32 [a]Jacob also went on his way, and the angels of God(A) met him. 2 When Jacob saw them, he said, “This is the camp of God!”(B) So he named that place Mahanaim.[b](C)
3 Jacob sent messengers(D) ahead of him to his brother Esau(E) in the land of Seir,(F) the country of Edom.(G) 4 He instructed them: “This is what you are to say to my lord(H) Esau: ‘Your servant(I) Jacob says, I have been staying with Laban(J) and have remained there till now. 5 I have cattle and donkeys, sheep and goats, male and female servants.(K) Now I am sending this message to my lord,(L) that I may find favor in your eyes.(M)’”
6 When the messengers returned to Jacob, they said, “We went to your brother Esau, and now he is coming to meet you, and four hundred men are with him.”(N)
7 In great fear(O) and distress(P) Jacob divided the people who were with him into two groups,[c](Q) and the flocks and herds and camels as well. 8 He thought, “If Esau comes and attacks one group,[d] the group[e] that is left may escape.”
9 Then Jacob prayed, “O God of my father Abraham,(R) God of my father Isaac,(S) Lord, you who said to me, ‘Go back to your country and your relatives, and I will make you prosper,’(T) 10 I am unworthy of all the kindness and faithfulness(U) you have shown your servant. I had only my staff(V) when I crossed this Jordan, but now I have become two camps.(W) 11 Save me, I pray, from the hand of my brother Esau, for I am afraid(X) he will come and attack me,(Y) and also the mothers with their children.(Z) 12 But you have said, ‘I will surely make you prosper and will make your descendants like the sand(AA) of the sea, which cannot be counted.(AB)’”
13 He spent the night there, and from what he had with him he selected a gift(AC) for his brother Esau: 14 two hundred female goats and twenty male goats, two hundred ewes and twenty rams,(AD) 15 thirty female camels with their young, forty cows and ten bulls, and twenty female donkeys and ten male donkeys.(AE) 16 He put them in the care of his servants, each herd by itself, and said to his servants, “Go ahead of me, and keep some space between the herds.”(AF)
17 He instructed the one in the lead: “When my brother Esau meets you and asks, ‘Who do you belong to, and where are you going, and who owns all these animals in front of you?’ 18 then you are to say, ‘They belong to your servant(AG) Jacob. They are a gift(AH) sent to my lord Esau, and he is coming behind us.’”
19 He also instructed the second, the third and all the others who followed the herds: “You are to say the same thing to Esau when you meet him. 20 And be sure to say, ‘Your servant(AI) Jacob is coming behind us.’” For he thought, “I will pacify him with these gifts(AJ) I am sending on ahead;(AK) later, when I see him, perhaps he will receive me.”(AL) 21 So Jacob’s gifts(AM) went on ahead of him, but he himself spent the night in the camp.
Jacob Wrestles With God
22 That night Jacob got up and took his two wives, his two female servants and his eleven sons(AN) and crossed the ford of the Jabbok.(AO) 23 After he had sent them across the stream, he sent over all his possessions.(AP) 24 So Jacob was left alone,(AQ) and a man(AR) wrestled with him till daybreak. 25 When the man saw that he could not overpower him, he touched the socket of Jacob’s hip(AS) so that his hip was wrenched as he wrestled with the man. 26 Then the man said, “Let me go, for it is daybreak.”
But Jacob replied, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.”(AT)
27 The man asked him, “What is your name?”
“Jacob,”(AU) he answered.
28 Then the man said, “Your name(AV) will no longer be Jacob, but Israel,[f](AW) because you have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome.”(AX)
29 Jacob said, “Please tell me your name.”(AY)
But he replied, “Why do you ask my name?”(AZ) Then he blessed(BA) him there.
30 So Jacob called the place Peniel,[g] saying, “It is because I saw God face to face,(BB) and yet my life was spared.”
31 The sun rose above him as he passed Peniel,[h](BC) and he was limping because of his hip. 32 Therefore to this day the Israelites do not eat the tendon attached to the socket of the hip,(BD) because the socket of Jacob’s hip was touched near the tendon.

10 I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies, and of all the truth, which thou hast shewed unto thy servant; for with my staff I passed over this Jordan; and now I am become two bands.
11 Deliver me, I pray thee, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau: for I fear him, lest he will come and smite me, and the mother with the children.
12 And thou saidst, I will surely do thee good, and make thy seed as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude.
13 And he lodged there that same night; and took of that which came to his hand a present for Esau his brother;

25 And when he saw that he prevailed not against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob's thigh was out of joint, as he wrestled with him.
26 And he said, Let me go, for the day breaketh. And he said, I will not let thee go, except thou bless me.
27 And he said unto him, What is thy name? And he said, Jacob.
28 And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed.
29 And Jacob asked him, and said, Tell me, I pray thee, thy name. And he said, Wherefore is it that thou dost ask after my name? And he blessed him there.
30 And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: for I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.
31 And as he passed over Penuel the sun rose upon him, and he halted upon his thigh.
32 Therefore the children of Israel eat not of the sinew which shrank, which is upon the hollow of the thigh, unto this day: because he touched the hollow of Jacob's thigh in the sinew that shrank.

Esau Comes to Meet Jacob

3 Then Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother (C)in the land of Seir, (D)the [b]country of Edom. 4 And he commanded them, saying, (E)“Speak thus to my lord Esau, ‘Thus your servant Jacob says: “I have dwelt with Laban and stayed there until now. 5 (F)I have oxen, donkeys, flocks, and male and female servants; and I have sent to tell my lord, that (G)I may find favor in your sight.” ’ ”

It is a present sent to my lord Esau; and behold, he also is behind us.’ ” 19 So he commanded the second, the third, and all who followed the droves, saying, “In this manner you shall speak to Esau when you find him; 20 and also say, ‘Behold, your servant Jacob is behind us.’ ” For he said, “I will (T)appease him with the present that goes before me, and afterward I will see his face; perhaps he will accept me.” 21 So the present went on over before him, but he himself lodged that night in the camp.

22 And he arose that night and took his two wives, his two female servants, and his eleven sons, (U)and crossed over the ford of Jabbok. 23 He took them, sent them [f]over the brook, and sent over what he had. 24 Then Jacob was left alone; and (V)a Man wrestled with him until the [g]breaking of day. 25 Now when He saw that He did not prevail against him, He [h]touched the socket of his hip; and (W)the socket of Jacob’s hip was out of joint as He wrestled with him. 26 And (X)He said, “Let Me go, for the day breaks.”
But he said, (Y)“I will not let You go unless You bless me!”
27 So He said to him, “What is your name?”
He said, “Jacob.”
28 And He said, (Z)“Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but [i]Israel; for you have (AA)struggled with God and (AB)with men, and have prevailed.”
29 Then Jacob asked, saying, “Tell me Your name, I pray.”
And He said, (AC)“Why is it that you ask about My name?” And He (AD)blessed him there.
30 So Jacob called the name of the place [j]Peniel: “For (AE)I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.” 31 Just as he crossed over [k]Penuel the sun rose on him, and he limped on his hip. 32 Therefore to this day the children of Israel do not eat the muscle that shrank, which is on the hip socket, because He [l]touched the socket of Jacob’s hip in the muscle that shrank.
