32 1 God comforteth Jacob by his Angels. 9, 10 He prayeth unto God confessing his unworthiness. 13 He sendeth presents unto Esau. 24, 28 He wrestled with the Angel who nameth him Israel.
1 Now Jacob went forth on his journey, and (A)the Angels of God met him.
2 And when Jacob saw them, he said, [a]This is God’s host: and he called the name of the same place [b]Mahanaim.
3 Then Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother, unto the land of Seir into the country of Edom.
4 To whom he gave commandment, saying, Thus shall ye speak to my [c]lord Esau: thy servant Jacob saith thus, I have been a stranger with Laban, and tarried unto this time.
5 I have beeves also and asses, sheep, and men servants, and women servants, and have sent to show my lord, that I may find grace in thy sight.
6 ¶ So the messengers came again to Jacob, saying, We came unto thy brother Esau, and he also cometh against thee and four hundred men with him.
7 Then Jacob was [d]greatly afraid, and was sore troubled, and divided the people that was with him, and the sheep, and the beeves, and the camels into two companies.
8 For he said, If Esau come to the one company and smite it, the other company shall escape.
9 ¶ Moreover Jacob said, O God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, Lord, which (B)saidst unto me, Return unto thy country, and to thy kindred, and I will do thee good.
10 I am not [e]worthy of the least of all the mercies, and all the truth, which thou hast showed unto thy servant: for with my [f]staff came I over this Jordan, and now have I gotten two bands.
11 I pray thee, Deliver me from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau: for I fear him, lest he will come and smite me, and the [g]mother upon the children.
12 And thou saidest, I will surely do to thee good, and make thy seed as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude.
13 ¶ And he tarried there that same night and took of that which came to hand, a [h]present for Esau his brother:
14 Two hundred she goats, and twenty he goats, two hundred ewes and twenty rams:
15 Thirty milch camels with their colts, forty kine, and ten bullocks, twenty she asses, and ten foals.
16 So he delivered them into the hand of his servants, every drove by themselves, and said unto his servants, Pass before me, and put a space between drove and drove.
17 And he commanded the foremost, saying, If my brother Esau meet thee, and ask thee, saying, Whose servant art thou? And whither goest thou? and whose are these before thee?
18 Then thou shalt say, They be thy servant Jacob’s: it is a present sent unto my lord Esau: and behold, he himself also is behind us.
19 So likewise commanded he the second and the third, and all that followed the droves, saying, After this manner, ye shall speak unto Esau, when ye find him.
20 And ye shall say moreover, Behold, thy servant Jacob cometh after us. (for he thought, I [i]will appease his wrath with the present that goeth before me, and afterward I will see his face: it may be that he will [j]accept me.)
21 So went the present before him: but he tarried that night with the company.
22 And he rose up the same night, and took his two wives, and his two maids, and his eleven children, and went over the ford Jabbok.
23 And he took them, and sent them over the river, and sent over that he had.
24 ¶ Now when Jacob was left himself alone, there wrestled a [k]man with him unto the breaking of the day.
25 And he saw that he could not [l]prevail against him: therefore he touched the hollow of his thigh, and the hollow of Jacob’s thigh was loosed, as he wrestled with him.
26 And he said, Let me go, for the morning appeareth. Who answered, (C)I will not let thee go, except thou bless me.
27 Then said he unto him, What is thy name? And he said, Jacob.
28 And said he, (D)Thy name shall be called Jacob no more, but Israel: because thou hast had [m]power with God, thou shalt also prevail with men.
29 And Jacob demanded, saying, Tell me, I pray thee, thy name. And he said, Wherefore now dost thou ask my name? and he blessed him there.
30 And Jacob called the name of the place, Peniel: for, said he, I have seen God face to face, and [n]my life is preserved.
31 And the sun rose up to him as he passed Peniel, and he [o]halted upon his thigh.
32 Therefore the children of Israel eat not of the sinew which shrank in the hollow of the thigh, unto this day: because he touched the sinew that shrank in the hollow of Jacob’s thigh.

Esau Comes to Meet Jacob
32 So Jacob went on his way, and (A)the angels of God met him. 2 When Jacob saw them, he said, “This is God’s (B)camp.” And he called the name of that place [a]Mahanaim.
3 Then Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother (C)in the land of Seir, (D)the [b]country of Edom. 4 And he commanded them, saying, (E)“Speak thus to my lord Esau, ‘Thus your servant Jacob says: “I have dwelt with Laban and stayed there until now. 5 (F)I have oxen, donkeys, flocks, and male and female servants; and I have sent to tell my lord, that (G)I may find favor in your sight.” ’ ”
6 Then the messengers returned to Jacob, saying, “We came to your brother Esau, and (H)he also is coming to meet you, and four hundred men are with him.” 7 So Jacob was greatly afraid and (I)distressed; and he divided the people that were with him, and the flocks and herds and camels, into two companies. 8 And he said, “If Esau comes to the one company and [c]attacks it, then the other company which is left will escape.”
9 (J)Then Jacob said, (K)“O God of my father Abraham and God of my father Isaac, the Lord (L)who said to me, ‘Return to your country and to your family, and I will deal well with you’: 10 I am not worthy of the least of all the (M)mercies and of all the truth which You have shown Your servant; for I crossed over this Jordan with (N)my staff, and now I have become two companies. 11 (O)Deliver me, I pray, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau; for I fear him, lest he come and [d]attack me and (P)the mother with the children. 12 For (Q)You said, ‘I will surely treat you well, and make your descendants as the (R)sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude.’ ”
13 So he lodged there that same night, and took what [e]came to his hand as (S)a present for Esau his brother: 14 two hundred female goats and twenty male goats, two hundred ewes and twenty rams, 15 thirty milk camels with their colts, forty cows and ten bulls, twenty female donkeys and ten foals. 16 Then he delivered them to the hand of his servants, every drove by itself, and said to his servants, “Pass over before me, and put some distance between successive droves.” 17 And he commanded the first one, saying, “When Esau my brother meets you and asks you, saying, ‘To whom do you belong, and where are you going? Whose are these in front of you?’ 18 then you shall say, ‘They are your servant Jacob’s. It is a present sent to my lord Esau; and behold, he also is behind us.’ ” 19 So he commanded the second, the third, and all who followed the droves, saying, “In this manner you shall speak to Esau when you find him; 20 and also say, ‘Behold, your servant Jacob is behind us.’ ” For he said, “I will (T)appease him with the present that goes before me, and afterward I will see his face; perhaps he will accept me.” 21 So the present went on over before him, but he himself lodged that night in the camp.
Wrestling with God
22 And he arose that night and took his two wives, his two female servants, and his eleven sons, (U)and crossed over the ford of Jabbok. 23 He took them, sent them [f]over the brook, and sent over what he had. 24 Then Jacob was left alone; and (V)a Man wrestled with him until the [g]breaking of day. 25 Now when He saw that He did not prevail against him, He [h]touched the socket of his hip; and (W)the socket of Jacob’s hip was out of joint as He wrestled with him. 26 And (X)He said, “Let Me go, for the day breaks.”
But he said, (Y)“I will not let You go unless You bless me!”
27 So He said to him, “What is your name?”
He said, “Jacob.”
28 And He said, (Z)“Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but [i]Israel; for you have (AA)struggled with God and (AB)with men, and have prevailed.”
29 Then Jacob asked, saying, “Tell me Your name, I pray.”
And He said, (AC)“Why is it that you ask about My name?” And He (AD)blessed him there.
30 So Jacob called the name of the place [j]Peniel: “For (AE)I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.” 31 Just as he crossed over [k]Penuel the sun rose on him, and he limped on his hip. 32 Therefore to this day the children of Israel do not eat the muscle that shrank, which is on the hip socket, because He [l]touched the socket of Jacob’s hip in the muscle that shrank.

3 Gia-cốp sai các sứ giả đi trước ông, đến gặp Ê-sau trong xứ Sê-i-rơ, thuộc lãnh thổ của Ê-đôm. 4 Ông căn dặn họ, “Anh em hãy nói với Ê-sau chúa của tôi như thế nầy: Gia-cốp tôi tớ ngài xin thưa, ‘Em đã làm một kiều dân sống ở nhà cậu La-ban và ở đó cho đến nay. 5 Em có được nhiều bò, lừa, các đàn chiên và dê, các tôi trai và tớ gái. Nay em sai người đến trình với anh, rất mong em được ơn trước mặt anh.’”
6 Các sứ giả trở về báo với Gia-cốp, “Chúng tôi đã đến gặp Ê-sau anh của chủ. Ông ấy đang dẫn bốn trăm người đến đón chủ.” 7 Nghe thế Gia-cốp rất sợ và xuống tinh thần. Lạy Chúa là Ðấng đã phán với con, ‘Hãy trở về quê hương ngươi và về với thân nhân ngươi, rồi Ta sẽ đối xử tốt với ngươi.’ 10 Con không xứng đáng để hưởng mọi tình thương và trọn sự thành tín mà Ngài đã bày tỏ cho tôi tớ Ngài, vì khi con qua Sông Giô-đanh, con chỉ có cây gậy trong tay, mà bây giờ con được hai đội nầy. 11 Cầu xin Ngài giải cứu con khỏi tay anh con, tức khỏi tay Ê-sau, vì con sợ anh ấy; con sợ anh ấy sẽ đến giết con, và giết luôn các vợ và các con của con.[b] 12 Cầu xin Ngài nhớ lại lời Ngài đã hứa với con rằng, ‘Ta chắc chắn sẽ đối xử tốt với ngươi và làm cho dòng dõi ngươi đông như cát bờ biển, đến nỗi không thể đếm được vì quá nhiều.’”
13 Ông nghỉ đêm tại đó. Ðoạn ông lấy một phần tài sản đang có làm quà cho Ê-sau, 14 gồm hai trăm dê cái và hai mươi dê đực, hai trăm chiên cái và hai mươi chiên đực, 15 ba mươi lạc đà mẹ có con còn bú và các con của chúng, bốn mươi bò cái và mười bò đực, hai mươi lừa cái và mười lừa đực. 16 Ông trao tất cả các súc vật ấy vào tay các đầy tớ ông, mỗi loài một đàn riêng, và bảo họ, “Hãy dẫn các đàn súc vật của anh em đi trước tôi, và giữ một khoảng cách giữa đàn trước với đàn sau.” 17 Rồi ông căn dặn người đi đầu, “Khi anh Ê-sau tôi gặp anh và hỏi, ‘Anh là người của ai? Anh đi đâu? Ðàn súc vật đi trước là của ai?’ 18 thì anh hãy đáp, ‘Thưa đó là của Gia-cốp tôi tớ ngài. Chúng là tặng phẩm ông ấy bảo tôi mang đến biếu cho chúa tôi là Ê-sau. Còn chính ông ấy thì đang đi ở đàng sau chúng tôi.’” 19 Ông cũng dặn như vậy cho người dẫn đàn thứ hai, rồi đàn thứ ba, và tất cả những người dẫn các đàn súc vật kế tiếp. “Anh em hãy nói như thế với Ê-sau khi anh em gặp ông ấy. 20 Và nhớ nói thêm, ‘Ngoài ra tôi tớ ngài là Gia-cốp đang đi phía sau chúng tôi.’” Vì ông nghĩ, “May ra mình có thể dùng những món quà đi trước mình làm anh ấy nguôi giận, rồi sau đó mình sẽ gặp anh ấy. Gia-cốp Vật Lộn với Chúa
22 Trong đêm đó ông thức dậy, đem hai vợ, hai nữ tỳ, và mười một đứa con lội qua Suối Gia-bốc. 23 Ông dẫn họ và đưa họ qua suối; ông cũng đem tất cả những gì ông có qua suối. 24 Nhưng Gia-cốp ở lại bên nầy suối một mình. Bấy giờ có một người đến vật lộn với ông đến rạng đông. 25 Khi người ấy thấy mình không thắng được Gia-cốp, người ấy đánh vào khớp xương hông của ông, vì vậy Gia-cốp bị trật xương hông khi ông vật lộn với người ấy. 26 Người ấy nói, “Hãy để Ta đi, vì trời sắp sáng rồi.”
Nhưng ông đáp, “Tôi sẽ không buông ra để Ngài đi, trừ phi Ngài ban phước cho tôi.”
27 Người ấy hỏi, “Ngươi tên gì?”
Ông đáp, “Gia-cốp.”
28 Người ấy nói, “Từ nay người ta sẽ không gọi ngươi là Gia-cốp nữa, nhưng là I-sơ-ra-ên,[c] vì ngươi đã vật lộn với Ðức Chúa Trời và với người ta, và ngươi đã thắng.”
29 Bấy giờ Gia-cốp hỏi người ấy, “Xin Ngài cho tôi biết tên Ngài là chi.”
Nhưng người ấy đáp, “Tại sao ngươi hỏi tên Ta?” Rồi người ấy ban phước cho ông tại đó. 30 Gia-cốp gọi chỗ đó là Pê-ni-ên[d] và nói, “Tôi đã thấy Ðức Chúa Trời mặt đối mặt, thế mà tôi còn giữ được mạng.” 31 Khi ánh bình minh tỏa rạng, ông qua khỏi Pê-ni-ên, chân đi khập khiễng, vì bị trặc xương hông. 32 Vì thế người I-sơ-ra-ên không ăn thịt đùi ở chỗ xương hông cho đến ngày nay, bởi vì người ấy đã đánh Gia-cốp ở khớp xương hông, nơi bắp thịt đùi.

Jacob Prepares to Meet Esau
32 [a]Jacob also went on his way, and the angels of God(A) met him. 2 When Jacob saw them, he said, “This is the camp of God!”(B) So he named that place Mahanaim.[b](C)
3 Jacob sent messengers(D) ahead of him to his brother Esau(E) in the land of Seir,(F) the country of Edom.(G) 4 He instructed them: “This is what you are to say to my lord(H) Esau: ‘Your servant(I) Jacob says, I have been staying with Laban(J) and have remained there till now. 5 I have cattle and donkeys, sheep and goats, male and female servants.(K) Now I am sending this message to my lord,(L) that I may find favor in your eyes.(M)’”
6 When the messengers returned to Jacob, they said, “We went to your brother Esau, and now he is coming to meet you, and four hundred men are with him.”(N)
7 In great fear(O) and distress(P) Jacob divided the people who were with him into two groups,[c](Q) and the flocks and herds and camels as well. 8 He thought, “If Esau comes and attacks one group,[d] the group[e] that is left may escape.”
9 Then Jacob prayed, “O God of my father Abraham,(R) God of my father Isaac,(S) Lord, you who said to me, ‘Go back to your country and your relatives, and I will make you prosper,’(T) 10 I am unworthy of all the kindness and faithfulness(U) you have shown your servant. I had only my staff(V) when I crossed this Jordan, but now I have become two camps.(W) 11 Save me, I pray, from the hand of my brother Esau, for I am afraid(X) he will come and attack me,(Y) and also the mothers with their children.(Z) 12 But you have said, ‘I will surely make you prosper and will make your descendants like the sand(AA) of the sea, which cannot be counted.(AB)’”
13 He spent the night there, and from what he had with him he selected a gift(AC) for his brother Esau: 14 two hundred female goats and twenty male goats, two hundred ewes and twenty rams,(AD) 15 thirty female camels with their young, forty cows and ten bulls, and twenty female donkeys and ten male donkeys.(AE) 16 He put them in the care of his servants, each herd by itself, and said to his servants, “Go ahead of me, and keep some space between the herds.”(AF)
17 He instructed the one in the lead: “When my brother Esau meets you and asks, ‘Who do you belong to, and where are you going, and who owns all these animals in front of you?’ 18 then you are to say, ‘They belong to your servant(AG) Jacob. They are a gift(AH) sent to my lord Esau, and he is coming behind us.’”
19 He also instructed the second, the third and all the others who followed the herds: “You are to say the same thing to Esau when you meet him. 20 And be sure to say, ‘Your servant(AI) Jacob is coming behind us.’” For he thought, “I will pacify him with these gifts(AJ) I am sending on ahead;(AK) later, when I see him, perhaps he will receive me.”(AL) 21 So Jacob’s gifts(AM) went on ahead of him, but he himself spent the night in the camp.
Jacob Wrestles With God
22 That night Jacob got up and took his two wives, his two female servants and his eleven sons(AN) and crossed the ford of the Jabbok.(AO) 23 After he had sent them across the stream, he sent over all his possessions.(AP) 24 So Jacob was left alone,(AQ) and a man(AR) wrestled with him till daybreak. 25 When the man saw that he could not overpower him, he touched the socket of Jacob’s hip(AS) so that his hip was wrenched as he wrestled with the man. 26 Then the man said, “Let me go, for it is daybreak.”
But Jacob replied, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.”(AT)
27 The man asked him, “What is your name?”
“Jacob,”(AU) he answered.
28 Then the man said, “Your name(AV) will no longer be Jacob, but Israel,[f](AW) because you have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome.”(AX)
29 Jacob said, “Please tell me your name.”(AY)
But he replied, “Why do you ask my name?”(AZ) Then he blessed(BA) him there.
30 So Jacob called the place Peniel,[g] saying, “It is because I saw God face to face,(BB) and yet my life was spared.”
31 The sun rose above him as he passed Peniel,[h](BC) and he was limping because of his hip. 32 Therefore to this day the Israelites do not eat the tendon attached to the socket of the hip,(BD) because the socket of Jacob’s hip was touched near the tendon.
