32 Jacob also went on the journey he had begun: and the angels of God met him.
2 And when he saw them, he said: These are the camps of God, and he called the name of that place Mahanaim, that is, Camps.
3 And he sent messengers before him to Esau his brother to the land of Seir to the country of Edom:
4 And he commanded them, saying: Thus shall ye speak to my lord Esau: Thus saith thy brother Jacob: I have sojourned with Laban, and have been with him until this day.
5 I have oxen, and asses, and sheep, and menservants, and womenservants: and now I send a message to my lord, that I may find favour in thy sight.
6 And the messengers returned to Jacob, saying: We came to Esau thy brother, and behold he cometh with speed to meet thee with four hundred men.
7 Then Jacob was greatly afraid; and in his fear divided the people that was with him, and the flocks, and the sheep, and the oxen, and the camels, into two companies,
8 Saying: If Esau come to one company and destroy it, the other company that is left shall escape.
9 And Jacob said: O God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, O Lord, who saidst to me: Return to thy land and to the place of thy birth, and I will do well for thee,
10 I am not worthy of the least of all thy mercies, and of thy truth which thou hast fulfilled to thy servant. With my staff I passed over this Jordan; and now I return with two companies.
11 Deliver me from the hand of my brother Esau, for I am greatly afraid of him: lest perhaps he come, and kill the mother with the children.
12 Thou didst say that thou wouldst do well by me, and multiply my seed like the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude.
13 And when he had slept there that night, he set apart, of the things which he had, presents for his brother Esau.
14 Two hundred she goats, twenty he goats, two hundred ewes, and twenty rams,
15 Thirty milch camels with their colts, forty kine, and twenty bulls, twenty she asses, and ten of their foals.
16 And he sent them by the hands of his servants, every drove by itself, and he said to his servants: Go before me, and let there be a space between drove and drove.
17 And he commanded the first, saying: If thou meet my brother Esau, and he ask thee: Whose art thou? or whither goest thou? or whose are these before thee?
18 Thou shalt answer: Thy servant Jacob's: he hath sent them as a present to my lord Esau: and he cometh after us.
19 In like manner he commanded the second and the third, and all that followed the droves, saying: Speak ye the same words to Esau, when ye find him.
20 And ye shall add: Thy servant Jacob himself also followeth after us: for he said: I will appease him with the presents that go before, and afterwards I will see him, perhaps he will be gracious to me.
21 So the presents went before him, but himself lodged that night in the camp.
22 And rising early he took his two wives, and his two handmaids, with his eleven sons, and passed over the ford of Jaboc.
23 And when all things were brought over that belonged to him,
24 He remained alone: and behold a man wrestled with him till morning.
25 And when he saw that he could not overcome him, he touched the sinew of his thigh, and forthwith it shrank.
26 And he said to him: Let me go, for it is break of day. He answered: I will not let thee go except thou bless me.
27 And he said: What is thy name? He answered: Jacob.
28 But he said: Thy name shall not be called Jacob, but Israel: for if thou hast been strong against God, how much more shalt thou prevail against men?
29 Jacob asked him, Tell me by what name art thou called? He answered: Why dost thou ask my name? And he blessed him in the same place.
30 And Jacob called the name of the place Phanuel, saying: I have seen God face to face, and my soul has been saved.
31 And immediately the sun rose upon him, after he was past Phanuel; but he halted on his foot.
32 Therefore the children of Israel, unto this day, eat not the sinew, that shrank in Jacob's thigh: because he touched the sinew of his thigh and it shrank.

2 雅 各 看 见 他 们 就 说 ： 这 是 神 的 军 兵 ， 於 是 给 那 地 方 起 名 叫 玛 哈 念 ( 就 是 二 军 兵 的 意 思 ) 。
3 雅 各 打 发 人 先 往 西 珥 地 去 ， 就 是 以 东 地 ， 见 他 哥 哥 以 扫 ，
4 吩 咐 他 们 说 ： 你 们 对 我 主 以 扫 说 ： 你 的 仆 人 雅 各 这 样 说 ： 我 在 拉 班 那 里 寄 居 ， 直 到 如 今 。
5 我 有 牛 、 驴 、 羊 群 、 仆 婢 ， 现 在 打 发 人 来 报 告 我 主 ， 为 要 在 你 眼 前 蒙 恩 。
6 所 打 发 的 人 回 到 雅 各 那 里 ， 说 ： 我 们 到 了 你 哥 哥 以 扫 那 里 ， 他 带 着 四 百 人 ， 正 迎 着 你 来 。
7 雅 各 就 甚 惧 怕 ， 而 且 愁 烦 ， 便 把 那 与 他 同 在 的 人 口 和 羊 群 、 牛 群 、 骆 驼 分 做 两 队 ，
8 说 ： 以 扫 若 来 击 杀 这 一 队 ， 剩 下 的 那 一 队 还 可 以 逃 避 。
9 雅 各 说 ： 耶 和 华 ─ 我 祖 亚 伯 拉 罕 的 神 ， 我 父 亲 以 撒 的 神 阿 ， 你 曾 对 我 说 ： 回 你 本 地 本 族 去 ， 我 要 厚 待 你 。
10 你 向 仆 人 所 施 的 一 切 慈 爱 和 诚 实 ， 我 一 点 也 不 配 得 ； 我 先 前 只 拿 着 我 的 杖 过 这 约 但 河 ， 如 今 我 却 成 了 两 队 了 。
11 求 你 救 我 脱 离 我 哥 哥 以 扫 的 手 ； 因 为 我 怕 他 来 杀 我 ， 连 妻 子 带 儿 女 一 同 杀 了 。
12 你 曾 说 ： 我 必 定 厚 待 你 ， 使 你 的 後 裔 如 同 海 边 的 沙 ， 多 得 不 可 胜 数 。
13 当 夜 ， 雅 各 在 那 里 住 宿 ， 就 从 他 所 有 的 物 中 拿 礼 物 要 送 给 他 哥 哥 以 扫 ：
14 母 山 羊 二 百 只 ， 公 山 羊 二 十 只 ， 母 绵 羊 二 百 只 ， 公 绵 羊 二 十 只 ，
15 奶 崽 子 的 骆 驼 三 十 只 ─ 各 带 着 崽 子 ， 母 牛 四 十 只 ， 公 牛 十 只 ， 母 驴 二 十 匹 ， 驴 驹 十 匹 ；
16 每 样 各 分 一 群 ， 交 在 仆 人 手 下 ， 就 对 仆 人 说 ： 你 们 要 在 我 前 头 过 去 ， 使 群 群 相 离 ， 有 空 ? 的 地 方 ；
17 又 吩 咐 尽 先 走 的 说 ： 我 哥 哥 以 扫 遇 见 你 的 时 候 ， 问 你 说 ： 你 是 那 家 的 人 ？ 要 往 那 里 去 ？ 你 前 头 ？ 这 些 是 谁 的 ？
18 你 就 说 ： 是 你 仆 人 雅 各 的 ， 是 送 给 我 主 以 扫 的 礼 物 ； 他 自 己 也 在 我 们 後 边 ？ 。
19 又 吩 咐 第 二 、 第 三 ， 和 一 切 赶 群 畜 的 人 说 ： 你 们 遇 见 以 扫 的 时 候 也 要 这 样 对 他 说 ；
20 并 且 你 们 要 说 ： 你 仆 人 雅 各 在 我 们 後 边 。 因 雅 各 心 里 说 ： 我 藉 着 在 我 前 头 去 的 礼 物 解 他 的 恨 ， 然 後 再 见 他 的 面 ， 或 者 他 容 纳 我 。
21 於 是 礼 物 先 过 去 了 ； 那 夜 ， 雅 各 在 队 中 住 宿 。
22 他 夜 间 起 来 ， 带 着 两 个 妻 子 ， 两 个 使 女 ， 并 十 一 个 儿 子 ， 都 过 了 雅 博 渡 口 ，
23 先 打 发 他 们 过 河 ， 又 打 发 所 有 的 都 过 去 ，
24 只 剩 下 雅 各 一 人 。 有 一 个 人 来 和 他 摔 跤 ， 直 到 黎 明 。
25 那 人 见 自 己 胜 不 过 他 ， 就 将 他 的 大 腿 窝 摸 了 一 把 ， 雅 各 的 大 腿 窝 正 在 摔 跤 的 时 候 就 扭 了 。
26 那 人 说 ： 天 黎 明 了 ， 容 我 去 罢 ！ 雅 各 说 ： 你 不 给 我 祝 福 ， 我 就 不 容 你 去 。
27 那 人 说 ： 你 名 叫 甚 麽 ？ 他 说 ： 我 名 叫 雅 各 。
28 那 人 说 ： 你 的 名 不 要 再 叫 雅 各 ， 要 叫 以 色 列 ； 因 为 你 与 神 与 人 较 力 ， 都 得 了 胜 。
29 雅 各 问 他 说 ： 请 将 你 的 名 告 诉 我 。 那 人 说 ： 何 必 问 我 的 名 ？ 於 是 在 那 里 给 雅 各 祝 福 。
30 雅 各 便 给 那 地 方 起 名 叫 ? 努 伊 勒 ( 就 是 神 之 面 的 意 思 ) ， 意 思 说 ： 我 面 对 面 见 了 神 ， 我 的 性 命 仍 得 保 全 。
31 日 头 刚 出 来 的 时 候 ， 雅 各 经 过 ? 努 伊 勒 ， 他 的 大 腿 就 瘸 了 。
32 故 此 ， 以 色 列 人 不 吃 大 腿 窝 的 筋 ， 直 到 今 日 ， 因 为 那 人 摸 了 雅 各 大 腿 窝 的 筋 。

32 Y JACOB se fué su camino, y saliéronle al encuentro ángeles de Dios.
2 Y dijo Jacob cuando los vió: El campo de Dios es este: y llamó el nombre de aquel lugar Mahanaim.
3 Y envió Jacob mensajeros delante de sí á Esaú su hermano, á la tierra de Seir, campo de Edom.
4 Y mandóles diciendo: Así diréis á mí señor Esaú: Así dice tu siervo Jacob: Con Labán he morado, y detenídome hasta ahora;
5 Y tengo vacas, y asnos, y ovejas, y siervos y siervas; y envío á decirlo á mi señor, por hallar gracia en tus ojos.
6 Y los mensajeros volvieron á Jacob, diciendo: Vinimos á tu hermano Esaú, y él también vino á recibirte, y cuatrocientos hombres con él.
7 Entonces Jacob tuvo gran temor, y angustióse; y partió el pueblo que tenía consigo, y las ovejas y las vacas y los camellos, en dos cuadrillas;
8 Y dijo: Si viniere Esaú á la una cuadrilla y la hiriere, la otra cuadrilla escapará.
9 Y dijo Jacob: Dios de mi padre Abraham, y Dios de mi padre Isaac, Jehová, que me dijiste: Vuélvete á tu tierra y á tu parentela, y yo te haré bien.
10 Menor soy que todas las misericordias, y que toda la verdad que has usado para con tu siervo; que con mi bordón pasé este Jordán, y ahora estoy sobre dos cuadrillas.
11 Líbrame ahora de la mano de mi hermano, de la mano de Esaú, porque le temo; no venga quizá, y me hiera la madre con los hijos.
12 Y tú has dicho: Yo te haré bien, y pondré tu simiente como la arena del mar, que no se puede contar por la multitud.
13 Y durmió allí aquella noche, y tomó de lo que le vino á la mano un presente para su hermano Esaú.
14 Doscientas cabras y veinte machos de cabrío, doscientas ovejas y veinte carneros,
15 Treinta camellas paridas, con sus hijos, cuarenta vacas y diez novillos, veinte asnas y diez borricos.
16 Y entrególo en mano de sus siervos, cada manada de por sí; y dijo á sus siervos: Pasad delante de mí, y poned espacio entre manada y manada.
17 Y mandó al primero, diciendo: Si Esaú mi hermano te encontrare, y te preguntare, diciendo ¿De quién eres? ¿y adónde vas? ¿y para quién es esto que llevas delante de ti?
18 Entonces dirás: Presente es de tu siervo Jacob, que envía á mi señor Esaú; y he aquí también él viene tras nosotros.
19 Y mandó también al segundo, y al tercero, y á todos los que iban tras aquellas manadas, diciendo: Conforme á esto hablaréis á Esaú, cuando le hallareis.
20 Y diréis también: He aquí tu siervo Jacob viene tras nosotros. Porque dijo: Apaciguaré su ira con el presente que va delante de mí, y después veré su rostro: quizá le seré acepto.
21 Y pasó el presente delante de él; y él durmió aquella noche en el campamento.
22 Y levantóse aquella noche, y tomó sus dos mujeres, y sus dos siervas, y sus once hijos, y pasó el vado de Jaboc.
23 Tomólos pues, y pasólos el arroyo, é hizo pasar lo que tenía.
24 Y quedóse Jacob solo, y luchó con él un varón hasta que rayaba el alba.
25 Y como vió que no podía con él, tocó en el sitio del encaje de su muslo, y descoyuntóse el muslo de Jacob mientras con él luchaba.
26 Y dijo: Déjame, que raya el alba. Y él dijo: No te dejaré, si no me bendices.
27 Y él le dijo: ¿Cuál es tu nombre? Y él respondió: Jacob.
28 Y él dijo: No se dirá más tu nombre Jacob, sino Israel: porque has peleado con Dios y con los hombres, y has vencido.
29 Entonces Jacob le preguntó, y dijo: Declárame ahora tu nombre. Y él respondió: ¿Por qué preguntas por mi nombre? Y bendíjolo allí.
30 Y llamó Jacob el nombre de aquel lugar Peniel: porque vi á Dios cara á cara, y fué librada mi alma.
31 Y salióle el sol pasado que hubo á Peniel; y cojeaba de su anca.
32 Por esto no comen los hijos de Israel, hasta hoy día, del tendón que se contrajo, el cual está en el encaje del muslo: porque tocó á Jacob este sitio de su muslo en el tendón que se contrajo.

Jacob Prepares to Meet Esau
32 [a]Jacob also went on his way, and the angels of God(A) met him. 2 When Jacob saw them, he said, “This is the camp of God!”(B) So he named that place Mahanaim.[b](C)
3 Jacob sent messengers(D) ahead of him to his brother Esau(E) in the land of Seir,(F) the country of Edom.(G) 4 He instructed them: “This is what you are to say to my lord(H) Esau: ‘Your servant(I) Jacob says, I have been staying with Laban(J) and have remained there till now. 5 I have cattle and donkeys, sheep and goats, male and female servants.(K) Now I am sending this message to my lord,(L) that I may find favor in your eyes.(M)’”
6 When the messengers returned to Jacob, they said, “We went to your brother Esau, and now he is coming to meet you, and four hundred men are with him.”(N)
7 In great fear(O) and distress(P) Jacob divided the people who were with him into two groups,[c](Q) and the flocks and herds and camels as well. 8 He thought, “If Esau comes and attacks one group,[d] the group[e] that is left may escape.”
9 Then Jacob prayed, “O God of my father Abraham,(R) God of my father Isaac,(S) Lord, you who said to me, ‘Go back to your country and your relatives, and I will make you prosper,’(T) 10 I am unworthy of all the kindness and faithfulness(U) you have shown your servant. I had only my staff(V) when I crossed this Jordan, but now I have become two camps.(W) 11 Save me, I pray, from the hand of my brother Esau, for I am afraid(X) he will come and attack me,(Y) and also the mothers with their children.(Z) 12 But you have said, ‘I will surely make you prosper and will make your descendants like the sand(AA) of the sea, which cannot be counted.(AB)’”
13 He spent the night there, and from what he had with him he selected a gift(AC) for his brother Esau: 14 two hundred female goats and twenty male goats, two hundred ewes and twenty rams,(AD) 15 thirty female camels with their young, forty cows and ten bulls, and twenty female donkeys and ten male donkeys.(AE) 16 He put them in the care of his servants, each herd by itself, and said to his servants, “Go ahead of me, and keep some space between the herds.”(AF)
17 He instructed the one in the lead: “When my brother Esau meets you and asks, ‘Who do you belong to, and where are you going, and who owns all these animals in front of you?’ 18 then you are to say, ‘They belong to your servant(AG) Jacob. They are a gift(AH) sent to my lord Esau, and he is coming behind us.’”
19 He also instructed the second, the third and all the others who followed the herds: “You are to say the same thing to Esau when you meet him. 20 And be sure to say, ‘Your servant(AI) Jacob is coming behind us.’” For he thought, “I will pacify him with these gifts(AJ) I am sending on ahead;(AK) later, when I see him, perhaps he will receive me.”(AL) 21 So Jacob’s gifts(AM) went on ahead of him, but he himself spent the night in the camp.
Jacob Wrestles With God
22 That night Jacob got up and took his two wives, his two female servants and his eleven sons(AN) and crossed the ford of the Jabbok.(AO) 23 After he had sent them across the stream, he sent over all his possessions.(AP) 24 So Jacob was left alone,(AQ) and a man(AR) wrestled with him till daybreak. 25 When the man saw that he could not overpower him, he touched the socket of Jacob’s hip(AS) so that his hip was wrenched as he wrestled with the man. 26 Then the man said, “Let me go, for it is daybreak.”
But Jacob replied, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.”(AT)
27 The man asked him, “What is your name?”
“Jacob,”(AU) he answered.
28 Then the man said, “Your name(AV) will no longer be Jacob, but Israel,[f](AW) because you have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome.”(AX)
29 Jacob said, “Please tell me your name.”(AY)
But he replied, “Why do you ask my name?”(AZ) Then he blessed(BA) him there.
30 So Jacob called the place Peniel,[g] saying, “It is because I saw God face to face,(BB) and yet my life was spared.”
31 The sun rose above him as he passed Peniel,[h](BC) and he was limping because of his hip. 32 Therefore to this day the Israelites do not eat the tendon attached to the socket of the hip,(BD) because the socket of Jacob’s hip was touched near the tendon.
