Yahweh Establishes the Oath with Isaac
26 Now there was (A)a famine in the land, besides the previous famine that had occurred in the days of Abraham. So Isaac went to Gerar, to (B)Abimelech king of the Philistines. 2 And Yahweh (C)appeared to him and said, “Do not go down to Egypt; (D)dwell in the land of which I shall tell you. 3 Sojourn in this land, and (E)I will be with you and (F)bless you, for (G)to you and to your seed I will give all these lands, and I will establish (H)the oath which I swore to your father Abraham. 4 (I)And I will multiply your seed as the stars of heaven, and I will give your seed all these lands; and (J)by your seed all the nations of the earth [a]shall be blessed; 5 because Abraham (K)listened to My voice and kept My charge, My commandments, My statutes, and My laws.”
Isaac and Abimelech
6 So Isaac [b]lived in Gerar. 7 Then the men of the place asked about his wife. And he said, “(L)She is my sister,” for he was (M)afraid to say, “my wife,” thinking, “lest the men of the place kill me on account of Rebekah, for she is (N)beautiful in appearance.” 8 Now it happened, when he had been there a long time, that Abimelech king of the Philistines looked out through a window and saw, and behold, Isaac was [c]caressing his wife Rebekah. 9 Then Abimelech called Isaac and said, “Behold, surely she is your wife! How then did you say, ‘She is my sister’?” And Isaac said to him, “Because I said, ‘Lest I die on account of her.’” 10 (O)And Abimelech said, “What is this you have done to us? One of the people might easily have lain with your wife, and you would have brought guilt upon us.” 11 So Abimelech commanded all the people, saying, “He who (P)touches this man or his wife shall surely be put to death.”
12 And Isaac sowed in that land and [d]reaped in the same year one hundredfold. And (Q)Yahweh blessed him, 13 and the man (R)became great and continued to grow greater until he became very great; 14 and (S)he had possessions of flocks and possessions of herds and many servants, so that the Philistines were jealous of him. 15 Now (T)all the wells which his father’s servants had dug in the days of Abraham his father, the Philistines stopped up [e]by filling them with earth. 16 Then Abimelech said to Isaac, “Go away from us, for you are [f](U)too mighty for us.” 17 And Isaac departed from there and camped in the valley of Gerar and [g]settled there.
The Quarrel over the Wells
18 Then Isaac dug again the wells of water which [h]had been dug in the days of his father Abraham, but the Philistines had stopped them up after the death of Abraham; and he [i]called them by the same names by which his father had called them. 19 Then Isaac’s servants dug in the valley and found there a well of [j]flowing water. 20 And the herdsmen of Gerar (V)contended with the herdsmen of Isaac, saying, “The water is ours!” So he named the well [k]Esek, because they quarreled with him. 21 Then they dug another well, and they contended over it also, so he called it [l]Sitnah. 22 Then he moved away from there and dug another well, and they did not contend over it; so he named it [m]Rehoboth, and he said, “[n](W)At last Yahweh has made [o]room for us, and we will be (X)fruitful in the land.”
23 And he went up from there to (Y)Beersheba. 24 And Yahweh (Z)appeared to him that night and said,
“(AA)I am the God of your father Abraham;
(AB)Do not fear, for I am with you.
I (AC)will bless you and multiply your seed,
For the sake of My servant Abraham.”
25 So he built an (AD)altar there and called upon the name of Yahweh and pitched his tent there; and there Isaac’s servants dug out a well.
Isaac’s Oath with Abimelech
26 Now (AE)Abimelech came to him from Gerar [p]with his adviser Ahuzzath and Phicol the commander of his army. 27 And Isaac said to them, “(AF)Why have you come to me, since you hate me and have sent me away from you?” 28 Then they said, “We see plainly (AG)that Yahweh has been with you; so we said, ‘Let there now be an oath between us—between [q]you and us—and let us cut a covenant with you, 29 that you will do us no harm, just as we have not touched you [r]and have done to you nothing but good and have sent you away in peace. You are now the (AH)blessed of Yahweh.’” 30 Then (AI)he made them a feast, and they ate and drank. 31 In the morning they arose early, and (AJ)each swore to [s]the other; then Isaac sent them away, and they departed from him in peace. 32 Now it happened on that day, that Isaac’s servants came in and told him about the well which they had dug and said to him, “We have found water.” 33 So he called it Shibah; therefore the name of the city is (AK)Beersheba to this day.
34 And Esau was forty years old, (AL)and he took as a wife Judith the daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and also Basemath the daughter of Elon the Hittite; 35 and (AM)they [t]brought bitterness to Isaac and Rebekah.

Isaac and Abimelek(A)
26 Now there was a famine in the land(B)—besides the previous famine in Abraham’s time—and Isaac went to Abimelek king of the Philistines(C) in Gerar.(D) 2 The Lord appeared(E) to Isaac and said, “Do not go down to Egypt;(F) live in the land where I tell you to live.(G) 3 Stay in this land for a while,(H) and I will be with you(I) and will bless you.(J) For to you and your descendants I will give all these lands(K) and will confirm the oath I swore to your father Abraham.(L) 4 I will make your descendants(M) as numerous as the stars in the sky(N) and will give them all these lands,(O) and through your offspring[a] all nations on earth will be blessed,[b](P) 5 because Abraham obeyed me(Q) and did everything I required of him, keeping my commands, my decrees(R) and my instructions.(S)” 6 So Isaac stayed in Gerar.(T)
7 When the men of that place asked him about his wife, he said, “She is my sister,(U)” because he was afraid to say, “She is my wife.” He thought, “The men of this place might kill me on account of Rebekah, because she is beautiful.”
8 When Isaac had been there a long time, Abimelek king of the Philistines(V) looked down from a window and saw Isaac caressing his wife Rebekah. 9 So Abimelek summoned Isaac and said, “She is really your wife! Why did you say, ‘She is my sister’?(W)”
Isaac answered him, “Because I thought I might lose my life on account of her.”
10 Then Abimelek said, “What is this you have done to us?(X) One of the men might well have slept with your wife, and you would have brought guilt upon us.”
11 So Abimelek gave orders to all the people: “Anyone who harms(Y) this man or his wife shall surely be put to death.”(Z)
12 Isaac planted crops in that land and the same year reaped a hundredfold,(AA) because the Lord blessed him.(AB) 13 The man became rich, and his wealth continued to grow until he became very wealthy.(AC) 14 He had so many flocks and herds and servants(AD) that the Philistines envied him.(AE) 15 So all the wells(AF) that his father’s servants had dug in the time of his father Abraham, the Philistines stopped up,(AG) filling them with earth.
16 Then Abimelek said to Isaac, “Move away from us;(AH) you have become too powerful for us.(AI)”
17 So Isaac moved away from there and encamped in the Valley of Gerar,(AJ) where he settled. 18 Isaac reopened the wells(AK) that had been dug in the time of his father Abraham, which the Philistines had stopped up after Abraham died, and he gave them the same names his father had given them.
19 Isaac’s servants dug in the valley and discovered a well of fresh water there. 20 But the herders of Gerar quarreled(AL) with those of Isaac and said, “The water is ours!”(AM) So he named the well Esek,[c] because they disputed with him. 21 Then they dug another well, but they quarreled(AN) over that one also; so he named it Sitnah.[d] 22 He moved on from there and dug another well, and no one quarreled over it. He named it Rehoboth,[e](AO) saying, “Now the Lord has given us room(AP) and we will flourish(AQ) in the land.”
23 From there he went up to Beersheba.(AR) 24 That night the Lord appeared to him and said, “I am the God of your father Abraham.(AS) Do not be afraid,(AT) for I am with you;(AU) I will bless you and will increase the number of your descendants(AV) for the sake of my servant Abraham.”(AW)
25 Isaac built an altar(AX) there and called on the name of the Lord.(AY) There he pitched his tent, and there his servants dug a well.(AZ)
26 Meanwhile, Abimelek had come to him from Gerar, with Ahuzzath his personal adviser and Phicol the commander of his forces.(BA) 27 Isaac asked them, “Why have you come to me, since you were hostile to me and sent me away?(BB)”
28 They answered, “We saw clearly that the Lord was with you;(BC) so we said, ‘There ought to be a sworn agreement between us’—between us and you. Let us make a treaty(BD) with you 29 that you will do us no harm,(BE) just as we did not harm you but always treated you well and sent you away peacefully. And now you are blessed by the Lord.”(BF)
30 Isaac then made a feast(BG) for them, and they ate and drank. 31 Early the next morning the men swore an oath(BH) to each other. Then Isaac sent them on their way, and they went away peacefully.
32 That day Isaac’s servants came and told him about the well(BI) they had dug. They said, “We’ve found water!” 33 He called it Shibah,[f] and to this day the name of the town has been Beersheba.[g](BJ)
Jacob Takes Esau’s Blessing
34 When Esau was forty years old,(BK) he married Judith daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and also Basemath daughter of Elon the Hittite.(BL) 35 They were a source of grief to Isaac and Rebekah.(BM)

And (M)he said, “She is my sister”; for (N)he was afraid to say, “She is my wife,” because he thought, “lest the men of the place kill me for Rebekah, because she is (O)beautiful to behold.” 8 Now it came to pass, when he had been there a long time, that Abimelech king of the Philistines looked through a window, and saw, and there was Isaac, [a]showing endearment to Rebekah his wife. 9 Then Abimelech called Isaac and said, “Quite obviously she is your wife; so how could you say, ‘She is my sister’?”
Isaac said to him, “Because I said, ‘Lest I die on account of her.’ ”
10 And Abimelech said, “What is this you have done to us? One of the people might soon have lain with your wife, and (P)you would have brought guilt on us.” 11 So Abimelech charged all his people, saying, “He who (Q)touches this man or his wife shall surely be put to death.”
12 Then Isaac sowed in that land, and reaped in the same year (R)a hundredfold; and the Lord (S)blessed him. 13 The man (T)began to prosper, and continued prospering until he became very prosperous; 14 for he had possessions of flocks and possessions of herds and a great number of servants. So the Philistines (U)envied him. 15 Now the Philistines had stopped up all the wells (V)which his father’s servants had dug in the days of Abraham his father, and they had filled them with earth. 16 And Abimelech said to Isaac, “Go away from us, for (W)you are much mightier than we.”
17 Then Isaac departed from there and [b]pitched his tent in the Valley of Gerar, and dwelt there. 18 And Isaac dug again the wells of water which they had dug in the days of Abraham his father, for the Philistines had stopped them up after the death of Abraham. (X)He called them by the names which his father had called them.

Isaac en Guerar
26 Por aquel tiempo la región volvió a sufrir hambruna —aparte de la que había padecido anteriormente, en los días de Abrahán—. Por eso Isaac se dirigió a Guerar, donde residía Abimélec, rey de los filisteos. 2 El Señor se le apareció y le dijo:
— No bajes a Egipto. Quédate en la tierra que yo te indique. 3 Reside en esta tierra y yo estaré contigo y te bendeciré; porque a ti y a tu descendencia les he de dar todas estas tierras. Así cumpliré el juramento que le hice a tu padre Abrahán. 4 Haré que tu descendencia sea tan numerosa como las estrellas del cielo y te daré todas estas tierras, y todas las naciones de la tierra serán bendecidas por medio de tu descendencia, 5 ya que Abrahán me obedeció y guardó mis preceptos y mandamientos, mis normas y leyes.
6 Isaac se quedó a vivir en Guerar. 7 Y cuando los lugareños le preguntaban si Rebeca era su mujer, él respondía que era su hermana, pues no se atrevía a decirles que era su mujer, no fueran a matarlo por causa de la belleza de Rebeca.
8 La estancia de Isaac en aquel lugar se fue dilatando, y un día Abimélec, rey de los filisteos, mirando por la ventana vio a Isaac acariciando a Rebeca, su mujer. 9 Entonces Abimélec mandó llamar a Isaac y le dijo:
— ¡Así que Rebeca es tu mujer! ¿Por qué dijiste que era tu hermana?
Isaac le respondió:
— Yo pensé que tal vez me matarían por causa de ella.
10 Abimélec le dijo:
— ¿Cómo se te ha ocurrido hacernos esto? Poco ha faltado para que alguno del pueblo se hubiera acostado con tu mujer, y nos hicieses a todos culpables.
11 Y Abimélec ordenó a todo el pueblo:
— Quien moleste a este hombre o a su mujer, será condenado a muerte.
12 Isaac sembró en aquella tierra, y ese año cosechó el céntuplo, porque el Señor lo bendijo. 13 Así Isaac se fue enriqueciendo cada vez más, hasta que llegó a ser muy rico. 14 Llegó a tener tantas ovejas y vacas y tantos sirvientes, que los filisteos acabaron envidiándole, 15 y cegaron con tierra todos los pozos que los criados de su padre Abrahán habían cavado, cuando este aún vivía. 16 Entonces Abimélec dijo a Isaac:
— ¡Apártate de nosotros, porque te has hecho más poderoso que nosotros!
17 Isaac se fue de allí y montó su campamento en el valle de Guerar, donde se estableció. 18 Abrió nuevamente los pozos de agua que habían sido cavados en tiempos de su padre Abrahán y que los filisteos habían cegado después de su muerte, y les puso los mismos nombres que su padre les había dado. 19 Un día, los criados de Isaac, cavando un pozo en el valle, dieron con un manantial. 20 Pero los pastores de Guerar se pusieron a discutir con los pastores de Isaac diciendo:
— Esta agua es nuestra.
Por eso Isaac llamó al pozo Esec —es decir, “Pelea”—, porque habían peleado por él. 21 Después cavaron otro pozo, y volvieron a discutir por él; por eso Isaac lo llamó Sitná —es decir, “Discusión”—.
22 Entonces Isaac se fue de allí y volvió a cavar otro pozo, pero esta vez ya no hubo disputas por él. A este pozo lo llamó Rejobot —es decir, “Espacios abiertos”—, pues se dijo: “El Señor nos ha dado espacios abiertos para que prosperemos en esta región”.
Renovación de la promesa hecha a Abrahán
23 De allí Isaac se dirigió a Berseba. 24 Y aquella misma noche el Señor se le apareció y le dijo:
Yo soy el Dios de tu padre Abrahán.
No temas, porque yo estoy contigo.
Te bendeciré y multiplicaré tu descendencia,
por amor a mi siervo Abrahán.
25 Allí Isaac erigió un altar e invocó el nombre del Señor. Montó allí su tienda, y sus criados cavaron otro pozo.
Alianza entre Isaac y Abimélec
26 Cierto día, Abimélec fue a visitar a Isaac desde Guerar. Llegó acompañado de su amigo Ajuzat y de Picol, el jefe de su ejército. 27 Isaac les preguntó:
— ¿Por qué vienen a visitarme, si me odian y hasta me han echado de su tierra?
28 Ellos respondieron:
— Nos hemos dado cuenta de que el Señor está contigo y queremos proponerte sellar entre nosotros una alianza con juramento. 29 Jura que no nos harás ningún daño, pues nosotros no te hicimos mal, al contrario, siempre te tratamos bien y te despedimos en forma amistosa. Tú eres ahora el bendito del Señor.
30 Isaac les ofreció un banquete y ellos comieron y bebieron. 31 Al día siguiente se levantaron de madrugada y se hicieron mutuo juramento. Luego Isaac los despidió, y ellos se marcharon como amigos.
32 Aquel mismo día los criados de Isaac vinieron a darle noticias del pozo que estaban cavando, y le dijeron:
— Hemos encontrado agua.
33 Isaac le puso el nombre de Sebá —es decir, “Juramento”—. Por eso la ciudad se llama hasta el día de hoy Berseba, —es decir, “Pozo del Juramento”.
34 Cuando Esaú tenía cuarenta años tomó por mujer a Judit, hija de Beerí el hitita, y a Besemat, hija de otro hitita llamado Elón. 35 Estas dos mujeres trajeron muchos disgustos a Isaac y a Rebeca.
