Abraham Lies to Abimelech
20 And Abraham journeyed from (A)there toward the land of (B)the [a]Negev and settled between Kadesh and Shur; then he sojourned in (C)Gerar. 2 And Abraham said of Sarah his wife, “(D)She is my sister.” So (E)Abimelech king of Gerar sent and took Sarah. 3 (F)But God came to Abimelech in a dream of the night and said to him, “Behold, (G)you are a dead man because of the woman whom you have taken, for she is [b]married.” 4 (Now Abimelech had not come near her.) Then he said, “Lord, (H)will You kill a nation, even though righteous? 5 Did he not himself say to me, ‘She is my sister’? And she (I)herself also said, ‘He is my brother.’ In (J)the integrity of my heart and the innocence of my [c]hands I have done this.” 6 Then God said to him in the dream, “Indeed, I know that in the integrity of your heart you have done this, and I also [d](K)held you back from sinning against Me; therefore I did not let you touch her. 7 So now, return the man’s wife, for (L)he is a prophet, and he will pray for you, and you will live. But if you do not return her, know that you shall surely die, you and all who are yours.”
8 So Abimelech arose early in the morning and called all his servants and told all these things in their hearing; and the men were greatly afraid. 9 (M)Then Abimelech called Abraham and said to him, “What have you done to us? And [e]how have I sinned against you, that you have brought on me and on my kingdom (N)a great sin? You have done to me [f]things that ought not to be done.” 10 And Abimelech said to Abraham, “What have you seen, that you have done this thing?” 11 And Abraham said, “Because I said, surely there is no (O)fear of God in this place, and (P)they will kill me because of my wife. 12 Besides, she actually is my sister, the daughter of my father, but not the daughter of my mother, and she became my wife; 13 and it happened when (Q)God caused me to wander from my father’s house, that I said to her, ‘This is [g]the lovingkindness which you will show to me: [h]everywhere we go, (R)say of me, “He is my brother.”’” 14 (S)Abimelech then took sheep and oxen and male and female slaves and gave them to Abraham and returned his wife Sarah to him. 15 And Abimelech said, “(T)Behold, my land is before you; [i]settle wherever it is good in your sight.” 16 To Sarah he said, “Behold, I have given your (U)brother one thousand pieces of silver; behold, it is [j]your vindication before all who are with you, and before all you are [k]cleared.” 17 (V)And Abraham prayed to God, and God healed Abimelech and his wife and his maidservants, so that they bore children. 18 (W)For Yahweh had utterly shut all the wombs of the household of Abimelech because of Sarah, Abraham’s wife.

20 And Abraham journeyed from thence toward the south country, and dwelled between Kadesh and Shur, and sojourned in Gerar.
2 And Abraham said of Sarah his wife, She is my sister: and Abimelech king of Gerar sent, and took Sarah.
3 But God came to Abimelech in a dream by night, and said to him, Behold, thou art but a dead man, for the woman which thou hast taken; for she is a man's wife.
4 But Abimelech had not come near her: and he said, Lord, wilt thou slay also a righteous nation?
5 Said he not unto me, She is my sister? and she, even she herself said, He is my brother: in the integrity of my heart and innocency of my hands have I done this.
6 And God said unto him in a dream, Yea, I know that thou didst this in the integrity of thy heart; for I also withheld thee from sinning against me: therefore suffered I thee not to touch her.
7 Now therefore restore the man his wife; for he is a prophet, and he shall pray for thee, and thou shalt live: and if thou restore her not, know thou that thou shalt surely die, thou, and all that are thine.
8 Therefore Abimelech rose early in the morning, and called all his servants, and told all these things in their ears: and the men were sore afraid.
9 Then Abimelech called Abraham, and said unto him, What hast thou done unto us? and what have I offended thee, that thou hast brought on me and on my kingdom a great sin? thou hast done deeds unto me that ought not to be done.
10 And Abimelech said unto Abraham, What sawest thou, that thou hast done this thing?
11 And Abraham said, Because I thought, Surely the fear of God is not in this place; and they will slay me for my wife's sake.
12 And yet indeed she is my sister; she is the daughter of my father, but not the daughter of my mother; and she became my wife.
13 And it came to pass, when God caused me to wander from my father's house, that I said unto her, This is thy kindness which thou shalt shew unto me; at every place whither we shall come, say of me, He is my brother.
14 And Abimelech took sheep, and oxen, and menservants, and womenservants, and gave them unto Abraham, and restored him Sarah his wife.
15 And Abimelech said, Behold, my land is before thee: dwell where it pleaseth thee.
16 And unto Sarah he said, Behold, I have given thy brother a thousand pieces of silver: behold, he is to thee a covering of the eyes, unto all that are with thee, and with all other: thus she was reproved.
17 So Abraham prayed unto God: and God healed Abimelech, and his wife, and his maidservants; and they bare children.
18 For the Lord had fast closed up all the wombs of the house of Abimelech, because of Sarah Abraham's wife.

God Corrects His Faithful Ones.[a] 1 Abraham broke camp and traveled into the Negeb, settling between Kedesh and Shur. He was dwelling in Gerar. 2 Abraham had said that Sarah, his wife, was his sister. Therefore, Abimelech, king of Gerar, sent to take Sarah for himself.
3 But God visited Abimelech during the night in a dream and said to him, “Behold, you are about to die because the woman you have taken belongs to her husband.”
4 Abimelech, who had not yet approached her, said, “My Lord, would you destroy an innocent nation? 5 Did he not tell me, ‘She is my sister’? And did she not also say, ‘He is my brother’? I did this with a pure conscience and in all innocence.”
6 God answered him in the dream, “I know that you acted with a good conscience when you did this. I prevented you from sinning against me. That is why I kept you from touching her. 7 Now give the woman back to this man. He is a prophet. He will intercede for you, and you will live. But if you do not restore her, know that you and everyone with you will die.”
8 Abimelech got up early in the morning and summoned all his servants to whom he recounted all these things. The men were terrified. 9 Then Abimelech summoned Abraham and told him, “What have you done to us? What did I do to you that you have subjected me and my kingdom to such a great sin? You have done things to me that you really should not have done.” 10 Then Abimelech asked Abraham, “What were you afraid of that you acted this way?”
11 Abraham answered, “I said to myself, ‘Certainly there will be no fear of God[b] in this place, and they will kill me because of my wife.’ 12 Besides, she is really my sister, the daughter of my father, but not the daughter of my mother; and she became my wife. 13 When God made me wander from my father’s homeland, I said to her, ‘Please do me this favor. Wherever we go, say that I am your brother.’ ”
14 Abimelech took flocks and herds, male and female slaves, and he gave them to Abraham, and he also gave back his wife Sarah. 15 Furthermore, Abimelech said, “Look around at my land; go and live wherever you please!”
16 To Sarah he said, “Behold, I have given two thousand shekels of silver to your brother. May that repay you for what has happened to you. Thus, your honor will be totally preserved.”
17 Abraham prayed to God and God healed Abimelech, his wife, and his maidservants so that they could once more have children. 18 For the Lord had rendered all the women in the household of Abimelech sterile because of Sarah, the wife of Abraham.

- Genesis 20:1 This episode, the first that is surely from the Elohist tradition, seems to be another version of the incident already recorded in 12:10-20; among other reasons for saying this, it is not in its proper place, since it must have happened at an earlier time when Sarah was not yet expecting a son. The depiction of Sarah as Abraham’s half-sister is a sign of the historical character of the story; the community of Israel would not have invented for the Patriarch a marriage that the Mosaic Law forbade as incestuous (Lev 18:9; 20:17).
- Genesis 20:11 Fear of God: a conventional phrase equivalent to “true religion.” “Fear” in this phrase has the sense of reverential trust in God that includes commitment to his revealed will (word).

Abraham and Abimelek(A)
20 Now Abraham moved on from there(B) into the region of the Negev(C) and lived between Kadesh(D) and Shur.(E) For a while(F) he stayed in Gerar,(G) 2 and there Abraham said of his wife Sarah, “She is my sister.(H)” Then Abimelek(I) king of Gerar sent for Sarah and took her.(J)
3 But God came to Abimelek(K) in a dream(L) one night and said to him, “You are as good as dead(M) because of the woman you have taken; she is a married woman.”(N)
4 Now Abimelek had not gone near her, so he said, “Lord, will you destroy an innocent nation?(O) 5 Did he not say to me, ‘She is my sister,(P)’ and didn’t she also say, ‘He is my brother’? I have done this with a clear conscience(Q) and clean hands.(R)”
6 Then God said to him in the dream, “Yes, I know you did this with a clear conscience, and so I have kept(S) you from sinning against me.(T) That is why I did not let you touch her. 7 Now return the man’s wife, for he is a prophet,(U) and he will pray for you(V) and you will live. But if you do not return her, you may be sure that you and all who belong to you will die.”(W)
8 Early the next morning Abimelek summoned all his officials, and when he told them all that had happened, they were very much afraid. 9 Then Abimelek called Abraham in and said, “What have you done to us? How have I wronged you that you have brought such great guilt upon me and my kingdom? You have done things to me that should never be done.(X)” 10 And Abimelek asked Abraham, “What was your reason for doing this?”
11 Abraham replied, “I said to myself, ‘There is surely no fear of God(Y) in this place, and they will kill me because of my wife.’(Z) 12 Besides, she really is my sister,(AA) the daughter of my father though not of my mother; and she became my wife. 13 And when God had me wander(AB) from my father’s household,(AC) I said to her, ‘This is how you can show your love to me: Everywhere we go, say of me, “He is my brother.”’”
14 Then Abimelek(AD) brought sheep and cattle and male and female slaves and gave them to Abraham,(AE) and he returned Sarah his wife to him. 15 And Abimelek said, “My land is before you; live wherever you like.”(AF)
16 To Sarah he said, “I am giving your brother a thousand shekels[a] of silver. This is to cover the offense against you before all who are with you; you are completely vindicated.”
17 Then Abraham prayed to God,(AG) and God healed Abimelek, his wife and his female slaves so they could have children again, 18 for the Lord had kept all the women in Abimelek’s household from conceiving because of Abraham’s wife Sarah.(AH)
