The Creation of Man and Woman
2 Thus the heavens and the earth were completed, and all (A)their hosts. 2 By (B)the seventh day God completed His work which He had done, and (C)He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. 3 Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created [a]and made.
4 [b](D)This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created, in (E)the day that the Lord God made earth and heaven. 5 (F)Now no shrub of the field was yet in the earth, and no plant of the field had yet sprouted, (G)for the Lord God had not sent rain upon the earth, and there was no man to [c]cultivate the ground. 6 But a [d]mist used to rise from the earth and water the whole [e]surface of the ground. 7 Then the Lord God formed man of (H)dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and (I)man became a living [f]being. 8 The Lord God planted a (J)garden toward the east, in Eden; and there He placed the man whom He had formed. 9 Out of the ground the Lord God caused to grow (K)every tree that is pleasing to the sight and good for food; (L)the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
10 Now a (M)river [g]flowed out of Eden to water the garden; and from there it divided and became four [h]rivers. 11 The name of the first is Pishon; it [i]flows around the whole land of (N)Havilah, where there is gold. 12 The gold of that land is good; the bdellium and the onyx stone are there. 13 The name of the second river is Gihon; it [j]flows around the whole land of Cush. 14 The name of the third river is [k](O)Tigris; it [l]flows east of Assyria. And the fourth river is the [m](P)Euphrates.
15 Then the Lord God took the man and put him into the garden of Eden to cultivate it and keep it. 16 The Lord God (Q)commanded the man, saying, “From any tree of the garden you may eat freely; 17 but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not [n]eat, for in the day that you eat from it (R)you will surely die.”
18 Then the Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone; (S)I will make him a helper [o]suitable for him.” 19 (T)Out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the [p]sky, and (U)brought them to the man to see what he would call them; and whatever the man called a living creature, that was its name. 20 The man gave names to all the cattle, and to the birds of the [q]sky, and to every beast of the field, but for [r]Adam there was not found (V)a helper [s]suitable for him. 21 So the Lord God caused a (W)deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept; then He took one of his ribs and closed up the flesh at that place. 22 The Lord God [t]fashioned into a woman (X)the rib which He had taken from the man, and brought her to the man. 23 The man said,
“(Y)This is now bone of my bones,
And flesh of my flesh;
[u]She shall be called [v]Woman,
Because [w]she was taken out of [x]Man.”
24 (Z)For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother, and be joined to his wife; and they shall become one flesh. 25 (AA)And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.

The Reign of the Lord’s Anointed.
2 Why are (A)the [a]nations in an uproar
And the peoples (B)devising a vain thing?
2 The (C)kings of the earth take their stand
And the rulers take counsel together
(D)Against the Lord and against His [b](E)Anointed, saying,
3 “Let us (F)tear their fetters apart
And cast away their cords from us!”
4 He who [c]sits in the heavens (G)laughs,
The Lord (H)scoffs at them.
5 Then He will speak to them in His (I)anger
And (J)terrify them in His fury, saying,
6 “But as for Me, I have [d]installed (K)My King
Upon Zion, (L)My holy mountain.”
7 “I will surely tell of the [e]decree of the Lord:
He said to Me, ‘You are (M)My Son,
Today I have begotten You.
8 ‘Ask of Me, and (N)I will surely give (O)the [f]nations as Your inheritance,
And the very (P)ends of the earth as Your possession.
9 ‘You shall [g](Q)break them with a [h]rod of iron,
You shall (R)shatter them like [i]earthenware.’”
10 Now therefore, O kings, (S)show discernment;
Take warning, O [j]judges of the earth.
11 [k]Worship the Lord with [l](T)reverence
And rejoice with (U)trembling.
12 [m]Do homage to (V)the Son, that He not become angry, and you perish in the way,
For (W)His wrath may [n]soon be kindled.
How blessed are all who (X)take refuge in Him!

Jesus’ Birth Foretold
26 Now in the sixth month the angel (A)Gabriel was sent from God to a city in Galilee called (B)Nazareth, 27 to (C)a virgin [a]engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, (D)of the [b]descendants of David; and the virgin’s name was [c]Mary. 28 And coming in, he said to her, “Greetings, [d]favored one! The Lord [e]is with you.” 29 But she (E)was very perplexed at this statement, and kept pondering what kind of salutation this was. 30 The angel said to her, “(F)Do not be afraid, Mary; for you have found favor with God. 31 And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you (G)shall name Him Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of (H)the Most High; and the Lord God will give Him (I)the throne of His father David; 33 (J)and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, (K)and His kingdom will have no end.” 34 Mary said to the angel, “How [f]can this be, since I [g]am a virgin?” 35 The angel answered and said to her, “(L)The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of (M)the Most High will overshadow you; and for that reason (N)the [h]holy Child shall be called (O)the Son of God. 36 And behold, even your relative Elizabeth has also conceived a son in her old age; and [i]she who was called barren is now in her sixth month. 37 For [j](P)nothing will be impossible with God.” 38 And Mary said, “Behold, the [k]bondslave of the Lord; may it be done to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her.
Mary Visits Elizabeth
39 Now [l]at this time Mary arose and went in a hurry to (Q)the hill country, to a city of Judah, 40 and entered the house of Zacharias and greeted Elizabeth. 41 When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was (R)filled with the Holy Spirit. 42 And she cried out with a loud voice and said, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! 43 And [m]how has it happened to me, that the mother of (S)my Lord would come to me? 44 For behold, when the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby leaped in my womb for joy. 45 And (T)blessed is she who [n]believed that there would be a fulfillment of what had been spoken to her [o]by the Lord.”
The Magnificat
46 And Mary said:
“(U)My soul [p](V)exalts the Lord,
47 And (W)my spirit has rejoiced in (X)God my Savior.
48 “For (Y)He has had regard for the humble state of His [q]bondslave;
For behold, from this time on all generations will count me (Z)blessed.
49 “For the Mighty One has done great things for me;
And holy is His name.
50 “(AA)And His mercy is [r]upon generation after generation
Toward those who fear Him.
51 “(AB)He has done [s]mighty deeds with His arm;
He has scattered those who were proud in the [t]thoughts of their heart.
52 “He has brought down rulers from their thrones,
And has (AC)exalted those who were humble.
53 “(AD)He has filled the hungry with good things;
And sent away the rich empty-handed.
54 “He has given help to Israel His servant,
[u]In remembrance of His mercy,
55 (AE)As He spoke to our fathers,
(AF)To Abraham and his [v]descendants forever.”
56 And Mary stayed with her about three months, and then returned to her home.
John Is Born
57 Now the time [w]had come for Elizabeth to give birth, and she gave birth to a son. 58 Her neighbors and her relatives heard that the Lord had [x](AG)displayed His great mercy toward her; and they were rejoicing with her.
59 And it happened that on (AH)the eighth day they came to circumcise the child, and they were going to call him Zacharias, [y]after his father. 60 But his mother answered and said, “No indeed; but (AI)he shall be called John.” 61 And they said to her, “There is no one among your relatives who is called by that name.” 62 And they (AJ)made signs to his father, as to what he wanted him called. 63 And he asked for a tablet and wrote as follows, “(AK)His name is John.” And they were all astonished. 64 (AL)And at once his mouth was opened and his tongue loosed, and he began to speak in praise of God. 65 Fear came on all those living around them; and all these matters were being talked about in all (AM)the hill country of Judea. 66 All who heard them kept them in mind, saying, “What then will this child turn out to be?” For (AN)the hand of the Lord was certainly with him.
Zacharias’s Prophecy
67 And his father Zacharias (AO)was filled with the Holy Spirit, and (AP)prophesied, saying:
68 “(AQ)Blessed be the Lord God of Israel,
For He has visited us and accomplished (AR)redemption for His people,
69 And has raised up a (AS)horn of salvation for us
In the house of David (AT)His servant—
70 (AU)As He spoke by the mouth of His holy prophets (AV)from of old—
71 [z](AW)Salvation (AX)from our enemies,
And from the hand of all who hate us;
72 (AY)To show mercy toward our fathers,
(AZ)And to remember His holy covenant,
73 (BA)The oath which He swore to Abraham our father,
74 To grant us that we, being rescued from the hand of our enemies,
Might serve Him without fear,
75 (BB)In holiness and righteousness before Him all our days.
76 “And you, child, will be called the (BC)prophet of (BD)the Most High;
For you will go on (BE)before the Lord to (BF)prepare His ways;
77 To give to His people the knowledge of salvation
[aa]By (BG)the forgiveness of their sins,
78 Because of the tender mercy of our God,
With which (BH)the Sunrise from on high will visit us,
79 (BI)To shine upon those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death,
To guide our feet into the (BJ)way of peace.”
80 (BK)And the child continued to grow and to become strong in spirit, and he lived in the deserts until the day of his public appearance to Israel.
