Genesis 2:8-9

⁸And the Lord God planted a ^(A)garden in Eden, in the east, and there he put the man whom he had formed. ⁹And out of the ground the Lord God made to spring up every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food. ^(B)The tree of life was in the midst of the garden, ^(C)and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

¹⁶To the woman he said,

“I will surely multiply your pain in childbearing;
^(A)in pain you shall bring forth children.
^(B)Your desire shall be contrary to^[a] your husband,
but he shall ^(C)rule over you.”

¹⁷And to Adam he said,

“Because you have listened to the voice of your wife
    and have eaten of the tree
^(D)of which I commanded you,
    ‘You shall not eat of it,’
^(E)cursed is the ground because of you;
    ^(F)in pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life;
¹⁸thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you;
    and you shall eat the plants of the field.
¹⁹By the sweat of your face
    you shall eat bread,
till you return to the ground,
    for out of it you were taken;
^(G)for you are dust,
    and ^(H)to dust you shall return.”
