And (A)on the seventh day God finished his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done. So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all his work that he had done in creation.

The Creation of Man and Woman

(B)These are the generations
of the heavens and the earth when they were created,
in the day that the Lord God made the earth and the heavens.

When no (C)bush of the field[a] was yet in the land[b] and no small plant of the field had yet sprung up—for the Lord God had not caused it to rain on the land, and there was no man (D)to work the ground, and a mist[c] was going up from the land and was watering the whole face of the ground— then the Lord God formed the man of (E)dust from the ground and (F)breathed into his (G)nostrils the breath of life, and (H)the man became a living creature. And the Lord God planted a (I)garden in Eden, in the east, and there he put the man whom he had formed. And out of the ground the Lord God made to spring up every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food. (J)The tree of life was in the midst of the garden, (K)and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

10 A river flowed out of Eden to water the garden, and there it divided and became four rivers. 11 The name of the first is the Pishon. It is the one that flowed around the whole land of (L)Havilah, where there is gold.

The Sabbath

12 And the Lord said to Moses, 13 “You are to speak to the people of Israel and say, ‘Above all you shall keep my Sabbaths, for this is a sign between me and you throughout your generations, that you may know that I, the Lord, sanctify you. 14 You shall keep the Sabbath, because it is holy for you. Everyone who profanes it shall be put to death. (A)Whoever does any work on it, that soul shall be cut off from among his people. 15 (B)Six days shall work be done, but (C)the seventh day is a Sabbath of solemn rest, holy to the Lord. (D)Whoever does any work on the Sabbath day shall be put to death. 16 Therefore the people of Israel shall keep the Sabbath, observing the Sabbath throughout their generations, as a covenant forever. 17 (E)It is a sign forever between me and the people of Israel that (F)in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, and (G)on the seventh day he rested and was refreshed.’”

18 And he gave to Moses, when he had finished speaking with him on Mount Sinai, the (H)two tablets of the testimony, tablets of stone, written with (I)the finger of God.

11 (A)I gave them my statutes and made known to them my rules, (B)by which, if a person does them, he shall live. 12 Moreover, I gave them (C)my Sabbaths, as a sign between me and them, (D)that they might know that I am the Lord who sanctifies them. 13 (E)But the house of Israel rebelled against me in the wilderness. (F)They did not walk in my statutes but rejected my rules, by which, if a person does them, he shall live; (G)and my Sabbaths they greatly profaned.

(H)“Then I said I would pour out my wrath upon them in the wilderness, to make a full end of them. 14 But I acted for the sake of my name, that it should not be profaned in the sight of the nations, (I)in whose sight I had brought them out. 15 Moreover, (J)I swore to them in the wilderness (K)that I would not bring them into the land that I had given them, a land (L)flowing with milk and honey, (M)the most glorious of all lands, 16 because they rejected my rules and did not walk in my statutes, and profaned my Sabbaths; (N)for their heart went after their idols. 17 Nevertheless, (O)my eye spared them, and I did not destroy them or (P)make a full end of them in the wilderness.

18 “And I said to (Q)their children in the wilderness, ‘Do not walk (R)in the statutes of your fathers, nor keep their rules, (S)nor defile yourselves with their idols. 19 (T)I am the Lord your God; (U)walk in my statutes, and be careful to obey my rules, 20 and (V)keep my Sabbaths holy that (W)they may be a sign between me and you, that you may know that I am the Lord your God.’ 21 (X)But the children (Y)rebelled against me. (Z)They did not walk in my statutes and were not careful to obey my rules, by which, if a person does them, he shall live; they profaned my Sabbaths.

(AA)“Then I said I would pour out my wrath upon them and spend my anger against them in the wilderness.

13 (A)“If you turn back your foot from the Sabbath,
from doing your pleasure[a] on my holy day,
and call the Sabbath a delight
    and the holy day of the Lord honorable;
if you honor it, not going your own ways,
or seeking (B)your own pleasure,[b] or talking idly;[c]
14 then you shall take delight in the Lord,
(C)and I will make you ride on the heights of the earth;[d]
(D)I will feed you with the heritage of Jacob your father,
