De engelen komen bij Lot
19 De twee engelen kwamen 's avonds bij Sodom. Lot zat in de poort van de stad. Toen hij hen zag, stond hij op, liep hun tegemoet en boog zich diep. 2 Hij zei: "Heren, wilt u alstublieft mijn gasten zijn? Blijf vannacht in mijn huis slapen. U kan er uw voeten wassen en dan morgen vroeg weer verder reizen." Maar ze zeiden: "Nee, we blijven vannacht op het plein slapen." 3 Maar toen Lot erg bij hen aandrong, gingen ze met hem mee naar huis. Hij maakte voor hen een maaltijd klaar en bakte brood voor hen. Ze aten.
4 Toen ze naar bed wilden gaan, omsingelden de mannen van Sodom het huis. Alle mannen van de hele stad, jong en oud, waren naar Lots huis gekomen. 5 Ze schreeuwden naar Lot: "Waar zijn die mannen die vannacht bij je zijn gekomen? Breng ze naar buiten, want we willen seks met hen hebben!" 6 Toen ging Lot naar buiten en deed de deur achter zich dicht. 7 Hij zei: "Vrienden, doe dat alsjeblieft niet. 8 Ik heb twee jonge, ongetrouwde dochters. Die wil ik wel naar buiten brengen. Jullie mogen met hen doen wat jullie willen. Maar doe deze mannen geen kwaad. Ze zijn mijn gasten en ze staan onder mijn bescherming."[a] 9 Maar ze zeiden: "Opzij! Jij bent maar een vreemdeling hier en nu wil jij ons vertellen wat wij moeten doen? Pas maar op, anders doen we met jou nog iets ergers dan met hen!" En ze drongen tegen Lot op en probeerden de deur open te breken. 10 Maar Lots gasten trokken Lot naar binnen en deden de deur dicht. 11 En ze zorgden ervoor dat de kerels de deur niet konden vinden, hoe goed ze ook zochten. Het was net alsof ze blind waren.
12 Toen zeiden de mannen tegen Lot: "Wie horen er hier nog meer bij jou? Zijn je dochters verloofd? Heb je nog meer zonen of dochters? Als er in de stad nog meer mensen bij jou horen, neem hen dan mee, de stad uit. 13 Want we gaan deze stad verwoesten. De Heer heeft gehoord dat er luid wordt geklaagd over de slechtheid van de mensen hier. Daarom heeft Hij ons gestuurd om de stad te vernietigen." 14 Toen ging Lot naar de mannen die met zijn dochters zouden trouwen en zei: "Kom mee, vlucht de stad uit, want de Heer gaat de stad verwoesten." Maar ze dachten dat hij hen voor de gek hield.
De verwoesting van Sodom
15 Het begon dag te worden. Daarom drongen de engelen er bij Lot op aan dat hij moest opschieten. Ze zeiden: "Kom mee en vlucht met je vrouw en je twee dochters. Dan zullen jullie niet worden gedood. Want de stad gaat verwoest worden vanwege alle misdaden die hier gebeuren." 16 Maar Lot bleef aarzelen. Daarom grepen de mannen hem, zijn vrouw en zijn twee dochters bij de hand en brachten hen de stad uit. Want de Heer wilde hen redden. 17 Zodra ze buiten de stad waren, zeiden ze: "Ren voor je leven! Kijk niet om en blijf niet hier in de vlakte staan. Vlucht naar de bergen, zodat jullie niet sterven." 18 Maar Lot zei: "Nee, heer, kijk toch! 19 U bent zo goed voor mij geweest en heeft mijn leven gered. Maar de bergen zijn te ver! Dat haal ik niet! De ramp zal mij inhalen en mij doden. 20 Kijk, dat stadje daar is dichtbij genoeg om naartoe te vluchten. Dat is maar een klein stadje. Dat kunt u toch wel heel laten? Dan kan ik daarheen vluchten om in leven te blijven." 21 Toen zei de engel tegen hem: "Ik zal ook nu doen wat je vraagt. Ik zal dat stadje niet omkeren. 22 Schiet op, vlucht daar maar heen. Want ik zal niets kunnen doen voordat jullie daar zijn aangekomen." Daarom noemen de mensen die stad sindsdien Zoar (= 'klein').
23 De zon ging net op toen Lot in Zoar aankwam. 24 Toen liet de Heer zwavel en vuur uit de hemel op Sodom en Gomorra neerregenen. 25 En Hij keerde die steden om, met het hele gebied er omheen, alle bewoners van de twee steden en alle akkers. 26 Maar Lots vrouw, die achter Lot liep, keek om en veranderde in een zoutpilaar.
27 De volgende ochtend ging Abraham al vroeg naar de plaats waar hij met de Heer had gesproken. 28 Hij keek in de richting van de vlakte waar Sodom en Gomorra lagen. Hij zag dat er rook van de aarde opsteeg, als de rook van een oven.
29 Toen God de steden in de vlakte verwoestte, was God niet vergeten wat Hij Abraham had beloofd. Hij dacht aan wat Abraham Hem had gevraagd. Daarom redde Hij Lot toen Hij de steden omkeerde waarin Lot had gewoond.
De dochters van Lot
30 Lot durfde niet in Zoar te blijven. Hij ging met zijn twee dochters in een grot in de bergen wonen. 31 De oudste dochter zei tegen de jongste dochter: "Onze vader is al oud en er is hier nergens een man om mee te trouwen, zoals dat hoort. 32 Laten we onze vader zoveel wijn te drinken geven dat hij dronken wordt, en dan met hem naar bed gaan. Dan zullen we door hem toch kinderen krijgen en zal de familie van onze vader blijven bestaan." 33 Die avond gaven ze hun vader veel wijn te drinken, zodat hij dronken werd. En de oudste dochter ging bij haar vader liggen en ging later weer weg. Lot wist er later niets van. 34 De volgende morgen zei de oudste dochter tegen de jongste: "Ik ben gisteren met mijn vader naar bed geweest. We zullen hem ook deze avond veel wijn te drinken geven. Dan ga jij met hem naar bed. Dan zullen we door onze vader kinderen krijgen en zal de familie van onze vader blijven bestaan." 35 Zo gaven ze hun vader ook die avond veel wijn te drinken, zodat hij dronken werd. Nu ging de jongste dochter bij haar vader liggen en ging later weer weg. En Lot wist er later niets van. 36 En de twee dochters raakten in verwachting van hun vader. 37 De oudste dochter kreeg een zoon, die ze Moab (= 'van een vader') noemde. Hij is de voorvader van de Moabieten. 38 Ook de jongste dochter kreeg een zoon, die ze Ben-Ammi (= 'zoon van mijn volk') noemde. Hij is de voorvader van de Ammonieten.

- Genesis 19:8 In die tijd was het de plicht van een gastheer om zijn gasten tot elke prijs te beschermen. Hij was er verantwoordelijk voor dat hun niets zou gebeuren. Lot was zelfs bereid zijn dochters daarvoor op te offeren.

De verwoesting van Sodom en Gomorra
19 Die avond kwamen de twee engelen bij de stadspoort van Sodom aan. Daar zat Lot. Hij zag hen, stond op en boog voor hen neer. 2 ‘Heren,’ zei hij, ‘kom naar mijn huis en wees mijn gasten voor de nacht. Morgenochtend kunt u zo vroeg opstaan als u wilt en uw weg vervolgen.’ ‘Bedankt voor uw aanbod,’ antwoordden zij, ‘maar wij brengen de nacht liever op het plein door.’ 3 Lot drong echter zo aan dat zij ten slotte met hem meegingen. Hij bood hun een maaltijd aan, compleet met ongezuurde broden.
4,5 Na het eten, toen iedereen zich klaarmaakte voor de nacht, omsingelden de mannen van Sodom, oud en jong, het huis en schreeuwden naar Lot: ‘Laat je gasten eens naar buiten komen, we willen gemeenschap met hen hebben!’ 6 Lot kwam naar buiten en sloot de deur achter zich. 7 ‘Toe, beste vrienden,’ drong hij aan, ‘dat kunnen jullie toch niet doen. 8 Ik heb twee dochters, die nog maagd zijn, die kunnen jullie wel krijgen. Daar mag je mee doen wat je wilt. Maar laat die mannen met rust, want als gasten staan zij onder mijn bescherming.’ 9 ‘Wat zullen we nu krijgen,’ schreeuwden de mannen. ‘Ga opzij! Wil jij, een vreemde, ons vertellen wat we wel en niet moeten doen? Pas maar op, wat wij met die mannen gaan doen, zal nog kinderspel zijn, vergeleken met wat we met jou zullen doen.’ Zij kwamen dreigend op Lot af en probeerden de deur te forceren. 10 Maar de twee mannen trokken Lot snel naar binnen en gooiden de deur dicht. 11 Tegelijk verblindden zij de woeste menigte, zodat die de deur niet kon vinden.
12,13 ‘Hoeveel familieleden hebt u hier in de stad?’ vroegen de engelen aan Lot. ‘Haal ze bij elkaar, schoonzonen, zonen, dochters en anderen en verlaat de stad dan zo snel mogelijk, want wij gaan haar vernietigen. De slechte naam van de stad is tot de hemel doorgedrongen en de Here heeft ons gestuurd om haar te verwoesten.’ 14 Toen zocht Lot de verloofden van zijn dochters op en riep: ‘Snel, verlaat de stad, want de Here gaat haar verwoesten!’ Maar zij geloofden hem niet.
15 Bij het aanbreken van de volgende dag kregen de engelen haast. ‘Schiet op,’ zeiden zij tegen Lot. ‘Maak dat u wegkomt met uw vrouw en uw twee dochters die hier in huis zijn, nu het nog kan. Anders wordt u ook het slachtoffer van de vernietiging van de stad!’ 16 Lot aarzelde nog, maar de engelen grepen hem, zijn vrouw en zijn twee dochters bij de hand en renden de stad uit. God wilde hen sparen. 17 ‘Ren voor uw leven,’ zeiden ze. ‘Kijk niet om en vlucht naar de bergen. Hier op de vlakte blijven zou uw dood betekenen!’
18-20 Maar Lot stribbelde tegen: ‘Ach nee, Heer,’ smeekte hij, ‘nu u zo vriendelijk bent geweest mijn leven te redden, laat mij dan alstublieft naar dat kleine stadje mogen vluchten in plaats van naar de bergen, want ik ben bang dat het onheil mij dan zal achterhalen. Kijk maar, dat stadje is dichtbij en maar klein. Ziet u niet hoe klein het is? Daar zal ik mijn leven kunnen redden.’ 21 ‘Goed,’ zei de engel, ‘ik aanvaard uw voorstel en zal dat kleine stadje niet verwoesten. 22 Maar schiet wel op, want ik kan niets doen zolang u hier staat.’ (Sinds die tijd heette het stadje Soar: kleine stad). 23 De zon was al op toen Lot de kleine stad bereikte.
24 Toen liet de Here vuur en brandend zwavel op Sodom en Gomorra regenen 25 en vernietigde de steden op de vlakte, samen met alle mensen en alles wat er groeide. 26 Maar Lots vrouw keek tijdens de vlucht om en veranderde in een zoutpilaar.
27 Diezelfde ochtend stond Abraham op en hij haastte zich naar de plaats, waar hij voor de Here had gestaan. 28 Hij keek over de vlakte naar Sodom en Gomorra en zag dikke rookwolken opstijgen. 29 Zo willigde God Abrahams verzoek in. Hij spaarde Lot en haalde hem op tijd uit het gebied van de enorme vernietiging en massale dood.
30 Lot durfde niet in Soar te blijven en ging met zijn twee dochters in een grot in de bergen wonen. 31 Op een dag zei Lots oudste dochter tegen haar zuster: ‘Hier in deze streek is geen enkele man met wie vader ons zal laten trouwen. Zelf zal hij al gauw niet meer in staat zijn kinderen te verwekken. 32 Laten wij hem dronken voeren met wijn en met hem slapen, zodat onze familie niet uitsterft.’
33 Zo voerden de meisjes hun vader die avond dronken en de oudste dochter ging bij hem liggen en had gemeenschap met haar vader. Lot merkte niet dat zij bij hem kwam en weer weg ging. 34 De volgende morgen zei de oudste dochter tegen haar zuster: ‘Ik heb vannacht met vader geslapen. Laten wij hem vanavond weer dronken voeren, dan kun jij het ook doen. Zo zal onze familie blijven voortbestaan.’ 35 Die avond voerden zij hun vader weer dronken en het jongste meisje sliep met haar vader. Net als de eerste keer merkte Lot er niets van.
36 Zo raakten de beide meisjes in verwachting van hun vader. 37 De zoon van de oudste werd Moab genoemd, hij werd de vader van de Moabieten. 38 De zoon van de jongste dochter werd Ben-Ammi genoemd, hij werd de vader van de Ammonieten.

Sodom and Gomorrah Destroyed
19 That evening the two angels came to the entrance of the city of Sodom. Lot was sitting there, and when he saw them, he stood up to meet them. Then he welcomed them and bowed with his face to the ground. 2 “My lords,” he said, “come to my home to wash your feet, and be my guests for the night. You may then get up early in the morning and be on your way again.”
“Oh no,” they replied. “We’ll just spend the night out here in the city square.”
3 But Lot insisted, so at last they went home with him. Lot prepared a feast for them, complete with fresh bread made without yeast, and they ate. 4 But before they retired for the night, all the men of Sodom, young and old, came from all over the city and surrounded the house. 5 They shouted to Lot, “Where are the men who came to spend the night with you? Bring them out to us so we can have sex with them!”
6 So Lot stepped outside to talk to them, shutting the door behind him. 7 “Please, my brothers,” he begged, “don’t do such a wicked thing. 8 Look, I have two virgin daughters. Let me bring them out to you, and you can do with them as you wish. But please, leave these men alone, for they are my guests and are under my protection.”
9 “Stand back!” they shouted. “This fellow came to town as an outsider, and now he’s acting like our judge! We’ll treat you far worse than those other men!” And they lunged toward Lot to break down the door.
10 But the two angels[a] reached out, pulled Lot into the house, and bolted the door. 11 Then they blinded all the men, young and old, who were at the door of the house, so they gave up trying to get inside.
12 Meanwhile, the angels questioned Lot. “Do you have any other relatives here in the city?” they asked. “Get them out of this place—your sons-in-law, sons, daughters, or anyone else. 13 For we are about to destroy this city completely. The outcry against this place is so great it has reached the Lord, and he has sent us to destroy it.”
14 So Lot rushed out to tell his daughters’ fiancés, “Quick, get out of the city! The Lord is about to destroy it.” But the young men thought he was only joking.
15 At dawn the next morning the angels became insistent. “Hurry,” they said to Lot. “Take your wife and your two daughters who are here. Get out right now, or you will be swept away in the destruction of the city!”
16 When Lot still hesitated, the angels seized his hand and the hands of his wife and two daughters and rushed them to safety outside the city, for the Lord was merciful. 17 When they were safely out of the city, one of the angels ordered, “Run for your lives! And don’t look back or stop anywhere in the valley! Escape to the mountains, or you will be swept away!”
18 “Oh no, my lord!” Lot begged. 19 “You have been so gracious to me and saved my life, and you have shown such great kindness. But I cannot go to the mountains. Disaster would catch up to me there, and I would soon die. 20 See, there is a small village nearby. Please let me go there instead; don’t you see how small it is? Then my life will be saved.”
21 “All right,” the angel said, “I will grant your request. I will not destroy the little village. 22 But hurry! Escape to it, for I can do nothing until you arrive there.” (This explains why that village was known as Zoar, which means “little place.”)
23 Lot reached the village just as the sun was rising over the horizon. 24 Then the Lord rained down fire and burning sulfur from the sky on Sodom and Gomorrah. 25 He utterly destroyed them, along with the other cities and villages of the plain, wiping out all the people and every bit of vegetation. 26 But Lot’s wife looked back as she was following behind him, and she turned into a pillar of salt.
27 Abraham got up early that morning and hurried out to the place where he had stood in the Lord’s presence. 28 He looked out across the plain toward Sodom and Gomorrah and watched as columns of smoke rose from the cities like smoke from a furnace.
29 But God had listened to Abraham’s request and kept Lot safe, removing him from the disaster that engulfed the cities on the plain.
Lot and His Daughters
30 Afterward Lot left Zoar because he was afraid of the people there, and he went to live in a cave in the mountains with his two daughters. 31 One day the older daughter said to her sister, “There are no men left anywhere in this entire area, so we can’t get married like everyone else. And our father will soon be too old to have children. 32 Come, let’s get him drunk with wine, and then we will have sex with him. That way we will preserve our family line through our father.”
33 So that night they got him drunk with wine, and the older daughter went in and had intercourse with her father. He was unaware of her lying down or getting up again.
34 The next morning the older daughter said to her younger sister, “I had sex with our father last night. Let’s get him drunk with wine again tonight, and you go in and have sex with him. That way we will preserve our family line through our father.” 35 So that night they got him drunk with wine again, and the younger daughter went in and had intercourse with him. As before, he was unaware of her lying down or getting up again.
36 As a result, both of Lot’s daughters became pregnant by their own father. 37 When the older daughter gave birth to a son, she named him Moab.[b] He became the ancestor of the nation now known as the Moabites. 38 When the younger daughter gave birth to a son, she named him Ben-ammi.[c] He became the ancestor of the nation now known as the Ammonites.

19 And there came two angels to Sodom at even; and Lot sat in the gate of Sodom: and Lot seeing them rose up to meet them; and he bowed himself with his face toward the ground;
2 And he said, Behold now, my lords, turn in, I pray you, into your servant's house, and tarry all night, and wash your feet, and ye shall rise up early, and go on your ways. And they said, Nay; but we will abide in the street all night.
3 And he pressed upon them greatly; and they turned in unto him, and entered into his house; and he made them a feast, and did bake unleavened bread, and they did eat.
4 But before they lay down, the men of the city, even the men of Sodom, compassed the house round, both old and young, all the people from every quarter:
5 And they called unto Lot, and said unto him, Where are the men which came in to thee this night? bring them out unto us, that we may know them.
6 And Lot went out at the door unto them, and shut the door after him,
7 And said, I pray you, brethren, do not so wickedly.
8 Behold now, I have two daughters which have not known man; let me, I pray you, bring them out unto you, and do ye to them as is good in your eyes: only unto these men do nothing; for therefore came they under the shadow of my roof.
9 And they said, Stand back. And they said again, This one fellow came in to sojourn, and he will needs be a judge: now will we deal worse with thee, than with them. And they pressed sore upon the man, even Lot, and came near to break the door.
10 But the men put forth their hand, and pulled Lot into the house to them, and shut to the door.
11 And they smote the men that were at the door of the house with blindness, both small and great: so that they wearied themselves to find the door.
12 And the men said unto Lot, Hast thou here any besides? son in law, and thy sons, and thy daughters, and whatsoever thou hast in the city, bring them out of this place:
13 For we will destroy this place, because the cry of them is waxen great before the face of the Lord; and the Lord hath sent us to destroy it.
14 And Lot went out, and spake unto his sons in law, which married his daughters, and said, Up, get you out of this place; for the Lord will destroy this city. But he seemed as one that mocked unto his sons in law.
15 And when the morning arose, then the angels hastened Lot, saying, Arise, take thy wife, and thy two daughters, which are here; lest thou be consumed in the iniquity of the city.
16 And while he lingered, the men laid hold upon his hand, and upon the hand of his wife, and upon the hand of his two daughters; the Lord being merciful unto him: and they brought him forth, and set him without the city.
17 And it came to pass, when they had brought them forth abroad, that he said, Escape for thy life; look not behind thee, neither stay thou in all the plain; escape to the mountain, lest thou be consumed.
18 And Lot said unto them, Oh, not so, my Lord:
19 Behold now, thy servant hath found grace in thy sight, and thou hast magnified thy mercy, which thou hast shewed unto me in saving my life; and I cannot escape to the mountain, lest some evil take me, and I die:
20 Behold now, this city is near to flee unto, and it is a little one: Oh, let me escape thither, (is it not a little one?) and my soul shall live.
21 And he said unto him, See, I have accepted thee concerning this thing also, that I will not overthrow this city, for the which thou hast spoken.
22 Haste thee, escape thither; for I cannot do anything till thou be come thither. Therefore the name of the city was called Zoar.
23 The sun was risen upon the earth when Lot entered into Zoar.
24 Then the Lord rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the Lord out of heaven;
25 And he overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew upon the ground.
26 But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt.
27 And Abraham gat up early in the morning to the place where he stood before the Lord:
28 And he looked toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the plain, and beheld, and, lo, the smoke of the country went up as the smoke of a furnace.
29 And it came to pass, when God destroyed the cities of the plain, that God remembered Abraham, and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow, when he overthrew the cities in the which Lot dwelt.
30 And Lot went up out of Zoar, and dwelt in the mountain, and his two daughters with him; for he feared to dwell in Zoar: and he dwelt in a cave, he and his two daughters.
31 And the firstborn said unto the younger, Our father is old, and there is not a man in the earth to come in unto us after the manner of all the earth:
32 Come, let us make our father drink wine, and we will lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father.
33 And they made their father drink wine that night: and the firstborn went in, and lay with her father; and he perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose.
34 And it came to pass on the morrow, that the firstborn said unto the younger, Behold, I lay yesternight with my father: let us make him drink wine this night also; and go thou in, and lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father.
35 And they made their father drink wine that night also: and the younger arose, and lay with him; and he perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose.
36 Thus were both the daughters of Lot with child by their father.
37 And the first born bare a son, and called his name Moab: the same is the father of the Moabites unto this day.
38 And the younger, she also bare a son, and called his name Benammi: the same is the father of the children of Ammon unto this day.

Sodom and Gomorrah Destroyed
19 The two angels(A) arrived at Sodom(B) in the evening, and Lot(C) was sitting in the gateway of the city.(D) When he saw them, he got up to meet them and bowed down with his face to the ground.(E) 2 “My lords,” he said, “please turn aside to your servant’s house. You can wash your feet(F) and spend the night and then go on your way early in the morning.”
“No,” they answered, “we will spend the night in the square.”(G)
3 But he insisted(H) so strongly that they did go with him and entered his house.(I) He prepared a meal for them, baking bread without yeast,(J) and they ate.(K) 4 Before they had gone to bed, all the men from every part of the city of Sodom(L)—both young and old—surrounded the house. 5 They called to Lot, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us so that we can have sex with them.”(M)
6 Lot went outside to meet them(N) and shut the door behind him 7 and said, “No, my friends. Don’t do this wicked thing. 8 Look, I have two daughters who have never slept with a man. Let me bring them out to you, and you can do what you like with them. But don’t do anything to these men, for they have come under the protection of my roof.”(O)
9 “Get out of our way,” they replied. “This fellow came here as a foreigner,(P) and now he wants to play the judge!(Q) We’ll treat you worse than them.” They kept bringing pressure on Lot and moved forward to break down the door.
10 But the men(R) inside reached out and pulled Lot back into the house and shut the door. 11 Then they struck the men who were at the door of the house, young and old, with blindness(S) so that they could not find the door.
12 The two men said to Lot, “Do you have anyone else here—sons-in-law, sons or daughters, or anyone else in the city who belongs to you?(T) Get them out of here, 13 because we(U) are going to destroy this place. The outcry to the Lord against its people is so great(V) that he has sent us to destroy it.”(W)
14 So Lot went out and spoke to his sons-in-law, who were pledged to marry[a] his daughters. He said, “Hurry and get out of this place, because the Lord is about to destroy the city!(X)” But his sons-in-law thought he was joking.(Y)
15 With the coming of dawn, the angels urged Lot, saying, “Hurry! Take your wife and your two daughters who are here, or you will be swept away(Z) when the city is punished.(AA)”
16 When he hesitated, the men grasped his hand and the hands of his wife and of his two daughters(AB) and led them safely out of the city, for the Lord was merciful to them.(AC) 17 As soon as they had brought them out, one of them said, “Flee for your lives!(AD) Don’t look back,(AE) and don’t stop anywhere in the plain!(AF) Flee to the mountains(AG) or you will be swept away!”
18 But Lot said to them, “No, my lords,[b] please! 19 Your[c] servant has found favor in your[d] eyes,(AH) and you[e] have shown great kindness(AI) to me in sparing my life. But I can’t flee to the mountains;(AJ) this disaster will overtake me, and I’ll die. 20 Look, here is a town near enough to run to, and it is small. Let me flee to it—it is very small, isn’t it? Then my life will be spared.”
21 He said to him, “Very well, I will grant this request(AK) too; I will not overthrow the town you speak of. 22 But flee there quickly, because I cannot do anything until you reach it.” (That is why the town was called Zoar.[f](AL))
23 By the time Lot reached Zoar,(AM) the sun had risen over the land. 24 Then the Lord rained down burning sulfur(AN) on Sodom and Gomorrah(AO)—from the Lord out of the heavens.(AP) 25 Thus he overthrew those cities(AQ) and the entire plain,(AR) destroying all those living in the cities—and also the vegetation in the land.(AS) 26 But Lot’s wife looked back,(AT) and she became a pillar of salt.(AU)
27 Early the next morning Abraham got up and returned to the place where he had stood before the Lord.(AV) 28 He looked down toward Sodom and Gomorrah, toward all the land of the plain, and he saw dense smoke rising from the land, like smoke from a furnace.(AW)
29 So when God destroyed the cities of the plain,(AX) he remembered(AY) Abraham, and he brought Lot out of the catastrophe(AZ) that overthrew the cities where Lot had lived.(BA)
Lot and His Daughters
30 Lot and his two daughters left Zoar(BB) and settled in the mountains,(BC) for he was afraid to stay in Zoar. He and his two daughters lived in a cave. 31 One day the older daughter said to the younger, “Our father is old, and there is no man around here to give us children—as is the custom all over the earth. 32 Let’s get our father to drink wine and then sleep with him and preserve our family line(BD) through our father.”(BE)
33 That night they got their father to drink wine, and the older daughter went in and slept with him. He was not aware of it when she lay down or when she got up.(BF)
34 The next day the older daughter said to the younger, “Last night I slept with my father. Let’s get him to drink wine again tonight, and you go in and sleep with him so we can preserve our family line through our father.”(BG) 35 So they got their father to drink wine(BH) that night also, and the younger daughter went in and slept with him. Again he was not aware of it when she lay down or when she got up.(BI)
36 So both of Lot’s daughters became pregnant by their father.(BJ) 37 The older daughter had a son, and she named him Moab[g];(BK) he is the father of the Moabites(BL) of today. 38 The younger daughter also had a son, and she named him Ben-Ammi[h]; he is the father of the Ammonites[i](BM) of today.
