The Creation of the World

1 In the ^(A)beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.

³ And God said, ^(A)“Let there be light,” and there was light. ⁴ And God saw that the light was good. And God separated the light from the darkness.

The Word Became Flesh

1 ^(A)In the beginning was ^(B)the Word, and ^(C)the Word was with God, and ^(D)the Word was God. ² He was in the beginning with God. ^3 (E)All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. ^4 (F)In him was life,^[a] and ^(G)the life was the light of men. ^5 (H)The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

⁶ There was a man ^(I)sent from God, whose name was ^(J)John. ⁷ He came as a ^(K)witness, to bear witness about the light, ^(L)that all might believe through him. ^8 (M)He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light.

^9 (N)The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. ¹⁰ He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet ^(O)the world did not know him.

²⁵ And God made the beasts of the earth according to their kinds and the livestock according to their kinds, and everything that creeps on the ground according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.

²⁶ Then God said, ^(A)“Let us make man^[a] in our image, ^(B)after our likeness. And ^(C)let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”

⁴ But ^(A)the Lord hurled a great wind upon the sea, and there was a mighty tempest on the sea, so that the ship threatened ^(B)to break up.

A Great Fish Swallows Jonah

^17 [a] And the Lord appointed^[b] a great fish to swallow up Jonah. ^(A)And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.

¹⁰ And the Lord spoke to the fish, and it vomited Jonah out upon the dry land.

⁶ Now the Lord God appointed a plant^[a] and made it come up over Jonah, that it might be a shade over his head, to save him from his discomfort.^[b] So Jonah was exceedingly glad because of the plant. ⁷ But when dawn came up the next day, God appointed a worm that attacked the plant, so that it withered.

Jesus Calms a Storm

^35 (A)On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side.” ³⁶ And leaving the crowd, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. And other boats were with him. ³⁷ And a great windstorm arose, and the waves ^(B)were breaking into the boat, so that the boat was already filling. ³⁸ But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion. And they woke him and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” ³⁹ And he awoke and ^(C)rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” And the wind ceased, and ^(D)there was a great calm. ⁴⁰ He said to them, “Why are you ^(E)so afraid? Have you still no faith?” ⁴¹ And they were filled with great fear and said to one another, ^(F)“Who then is this, that even ^(G)the wind and the sea obey him?”
