17 Then to Adam He said, “Because you have listened to the voice of your wife and have eaten from the tree about which I commanded you, saying, ‘You shall not eat from it’;

(A)Cursed is the ground because of you;
(B)In [a]pain you will eat of it
All the days of your life.
18 Both thorns and thistles it shall (C)grow for you;
And you will eat the [b]plants of the field;
19 By the sweat of your [c]face
You will eat bread,
Till you (D)return to the ground,
Because (E)from it you were taken;
For you are dust,
And to dust you shall return.”

20 Now the man called his wife’s name [d](F)Eve, because she was the mother of all the living. 21 Then Yahweh God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife, and He clothed them.

22 Then Yahweh God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of (G)Us [e]to know good and evil; and now, lest he send forth his hand and take also from (H)the tree of life and eat and live forever”— 23 therefore Yahweh God sent him out from the garden of Eden, to [f]cultivate the ground from which he was taken. 24 So (I)He drove the man out; and at the (J)east of the garden of Eden He stationed the (K)cherubim and the flaming sword which turned every direction to [g]guard the way to (L)the tree of life.

22 “And the generation to come, your sons who rise up after you and (A)the foreigner who comes from a distant land, shall see the plagues of the land and the diseases with which Yahweh has [a]afflicted it, and they will say, 23 ‘All its land is (B)brimstone and salt, (C)a burning waste, [b]unsown and nothing sprouting, and no grass grows in it, like the overthrow of (D)Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim, which Yahweh overthrew in His anger and in His wrath.’ 24 And all the nations will say, ‘(E)Why has Yahweh done thus to this land? Why this great burning anger?’ 25 Then men will say, ‘(F)Because they forsook the covenant of Yahweh, the God of their fathers, which He cut with them when He brought them out of the land of Egypt. 26 And they went and served other gods and worshiped them, gods whom they have not known and whom He had not apportioned to them. 27 Therefore, the anger of Yahweh was kindled against that land, (G)to bring upon it every curse which is written in this book; 28 and (H)Yahweh uprooted them from their land in anger and in fury and in great wrath, and He cast them into another land, as it is this day.’

29 (I)The secret things belong to Yahweh our God, but (J)the things revealed belong to us and to our sons forever, that we may do all the words of this law.
