¹⁸ So Jacob rose early in the morning and took ^(A)the stone that he had put ^[a]under his head and set it up as a pillar and poured oil on its top.

^4 (A)And Moses wrote down all the words of Yahweh. Then he arose early in the morning and built an ^(B)altar ^[a]at the foot of the mountain with twelve pillars for the twelve tribes of Israel.

An Altar Called Witness

¹⁰ And they came to the region of the Jordan which is in the land of Canaan, and the sons of Reuben and the sons of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh built an altar there by the Jordan, a large altar in appearance.

²⁶ “Therefore we said, ‘Let us ^[a]build an altar, not for burnt offering or for sacrifice; ²⁷ rather it shall be ^(A)a witness between us and you and between our generations after us, that we are to ^(B)perform the service of Yahweh before Him with our burnt offerings and with our sacrifices and with our peace offerings, so that your sons will not say to our sons in time to come, “You have no portion in Yahweh.”’
