The Birth of Isaac
21 The Lord dealt with Sarah as he had said, and the Lord did for Sarah as he had promised. 2 Sarah conceived and bore Abraham a son in his old age, at the time of which God had spoken to him. 3 Abraham gave the name Isaac to his son whom Sarah bore him. 4 And Abraham circumcised his son Isaac when he was eight days old, as God had commanded him. 5 Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him. 6 Now Sarah said, “God has brought laughter for me; everyone who hears will laugh with me.” 7 And she said, “Who would ever have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have borne him a son in his old age.”
Hagar and Ishmael Sent Away
8 The child grew, and was weaned; and Abraham made a great feast on the day that Isaac was weaned. 9 But Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, whom she had borne to Abraham, playing with her son Isaac.[a] 10 So she said to Abraham, “Cast out this slave woman with her son; for the son of this slave woman shall not inherit along with my son Isaac.” 11 The matter was very distressing to Abraham on account of his son. 12 But God said to Abraham, “Do not be distressed because of the boy and because of your slave woman; whatever Sarah says to you, do as she tells you, for it is through Isaac that offspring shall be named for you. 13 As for the son of the slave woman, I will make a nation of him also, because he is your offspring.” 14 So Abraham rose early in the morning, and took bread and a skin of water, and gave it to Hagar, putting it on her shoulder, along with the child, and sent her away. And she departed, and wandered about in the wilderness of Beer-sheba.
15 When the water in the skin was gone, she cast the child under one of the bushes. 16 Then she went and sat down opposite him a good way off, about the distance of a bowshot; for she said, “Do not let me look on the death of the child.” And as she sat opposite him, she lifted up her voice and wept. 17 And God heard the voice of the boy; and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven, and said to her, “What troubles you, Hagar? Do not be afraid; for God has heard the voice of the boy where he is. 18 Come, lift up the boy and hold him fast with your hand, for I will make a great nation of him.” 19 Then God opened her eyes and she saw a well of water. She went, and filled the skin with water, and gave the boy a drink.
20 God was with the boy, and he grew up; he lived in the wilderness, and became an expert with the bow. 21 He lived in the wilderness of Paran; and his mother got a wife for him from the land of Egypt.
Abraham and Abimelech Make a Covenant
22 At that time Abimelech, with Phicol the commander of his army, said to Abraham, “God is with you in all that you do; 23 now therefore swear to me here by God that you will not deal falsely with me or with my offspring or with my posterity, but as I have dealt loyally with you, you will deal with me and with the land where you have resided as an alien.” 24 And Abraham said, “I swear it.”
25 When Abraham complained to Abimelech about a well of water that Abimelech’s servants had seized, 26 Abimelech said, “I do not know who has done this; you did not tell me, and I have not heard of it until today.” 27 So Abraham took sheep and oxen and gave them to Abimelech, and the two men made a covenant. 28 Abraham set apart seven ewe lambs of the flock. 29 And Abimelech said to Abraham, “What is the meaning of these seven ewe lambs that you have set apart?” 30 He said, “These seven ewe lambs you shall accept from my hand, in order that you may be a witness for me that I dug this well.” 31 Therefore that place was called Beer-sheba;[b] because there both of them swore an oath. 32 When they had made a covenant at Beer-sheba, Abimelech, with Phicol the commander of his army, left and returned to the land of the Philistines. 33 Abraham[c] planted a tamarisk tree in Beer-sheba, and called there on the name of the Lord, the Everlasting God.[d] 34 And Abraham resided as an alien many days in the land of the Philistines.

21 (A)Il Signore visitò Sara come aveva detto; e il Signore fece a Sara come aveva annunciato. 2 Sara concepì e partorì un figlio ad Abraamo, quando egli era vecchio, al tempo che Dio gli aveva fissato. 3 Abraamo chiamò Isacco il figlio che gli era nato, che Sara gli aveva partorito. 4 Abraamo circoncise suo figlio Isacco all’età di otto giorni, come Dio gli aveva comandato. 5 Abraamo aveva cent’anni quando gli nacque suo figlio Isacco. 6 Sara disse: «Dio mi ha dato di che ridere; chiunque l’udrà riderà con me». 7 E aggiunse: «Chi avrebbe mai detto ad Abraamo che Sara avrebbe allattato figli? 8 Il bambino dunque crebbe e fu divezzato. Nel giorno che Isacco fu divezzato, Abraamo fece un grande banchetto.
Agar nel deserto
9 (B)Sara vide che il figlio partorito ad Abraamo da Agar, l’Egiziana, rideva; 10 allora disse ad Abraamo: «Caccia via questa serva e suo figlio; perché il figlio di questa serva non dev’essere erede con mio figlio, con Isacco[a]». 11 La cosa dispiacque moltissimo ad Abraamo a motivo di suo figlio. 12 Ma Dio disse ad Abraamo: «Non addolorarti per il ragazzo, né per la tua serva; acconsenti a tutto quello che Sara ti dirà, perché da Isacco uscirà la discendenza che porterà il tuo nome[b]. 13 Anche del figlio di questa serva io farò una nazione, perché appartiene alla tua discendenza».
14 Abraamo si alzò la mattina di buon’ora, prese del pane e un otre d’acqua e li diede ad Agar, mettendoglieli sulle spalle con il bambino, e la mandò via. Lei se ne andò e vagava per il deserto di Beer-Sceba. 15 Quando l’acqua dell’otre finì, lei mise il bambino sotto un arboscello. 16 E andò a sedersi di fronte, a distanza di un tiro d’arco, perché diceva: «Che io non veda morire il bambino!» E seduta così di fronte, alzò la voce e pianse. 17 Dio udì la voce del ragazzo e l’angelo di Dio chiamò Agar dal cielo e le disse: «Che hai, Agar? Non temere, perché Dio ha udito la voce del ragazzo là dov’è. 18 Àlzati, prendi il ragazzo e tienilo per mano, perché io farò di lui una grande nazione». 19 Dio le aprì gli occhi ed ella vide un pozzo d’acqua e andò, riempì d’acqua l’otre e diede da bere al ragazzo. 20 Dio fu con il ragazzo; egli crebbe, abitò nel deserto e divenne un tiratore d’arco. 21 Egli si stabilì nel deserto di Paran e sua madre gli prese per moglie una donna del paese d’Egitto.
Abraamo a Beer-Sceba
22 (C)In quel tempo Abimelec, accompagnato da Picol, capo del suo esercito, parlò ad Abraamo, dicendo: «Dio è con te in tutto quello che fai. 23 Giurami dunque qui, nel nome di Dio, che tu non ingannerai me, né i miei figli, né i miei nipoti; ma che userai verso di me e verso il paese dove hai abitato come straniero la stessa benevolenza che io ho usata verso di te». 24 Abraamo rispose: «Lo giuro». 25 Poi Abraamo fece delle rimostranze ad Abimelec a causa di un pozzo d’acqua di cui i servi di Abimelec si erano impadroniti con la forza. 26 Abimelec disse: «Io non so chi abbia fatto questo; tu stesso non me l’hai fatto sapere e io non ne ho sentito parlare che oggi». 27 Abraamo prese pecore e buoi e li diede ad Abimelec; e i due fecero alleanza. 28 Poi Abraamo mise da parte sette agnelle del gregge. 29 E Abimelec disse ad Abraamo: «Che cosa significano queste sette agnelle che tu hai messe da parte?» 30 Abraamo rispose: «Tu accetterai dalla mia mano queste sette agnelle, perché ciò mi serva di testimonianza che io ho scavato questo pozzo». 31 Per questo egli chiamò quel luogo Beer-Sceba[c], perché entrambi vi avevano fatto giuramento. 32 Così fecero alleanza a Beer-Sceba. Poi Abimelec, con Picol, capo del suo esercito, si alzò e se ne tornarono nel paese dei Filistei. 33 E Abraamo piantò un tamarindo a Beer-Sceba e lì invocò il nome del Signore, Dio dell’eternità. 34 Abraamo abitò molto tempo come straniero nel paese dei Filistei.

21 Und der Herr suchte Sarah heim, wie er verheißen hatte, und der Herr handelte an Sarah, wie er geredet hatte.
2 Und Sarah wurde schwanger und gebar dem Abraham einen Sohn in seinem Alter, zur bestimmten Zeit, wie ihm Gott verheißen hatte.
3 Und Abraham gab seinem Sohn, der ihm geboren wurde, den ihm Sarah gebar, den Namen Isaak.
4 Und Abraham beschnitt Isaak, seinen Sohn, als er acht Tage alt war, wie es ihm Gott geboten hatte.
5 Und Abraham war 100 Jahre alt, als ihm sein Sohn Isaak geboren wurde.
6 Und Sarah sprach: Gott hat mir ein Lachen bereitet; wer es hören wird, der wird mir zulachen!
7 Und sie sprach: Wer hätte das dem Abraham verkündet, dass Sarah Kinder stillt, dass ich ihm einen Sohn geboren habe in seinem Alter?
8 Und das Kind wuchs heran und wurde entwöhnt. Und Abraham machte ein großes Mahl an dem Tag, als Isaak entwöhnt wurde.
Die Austreibung Hagars und Ismaels
9 Und Sarah sah, dass der Sohn der Hagar, der ägyptischen Magd, den sie dem Abraham geboren hatte, Mutwillen trieb.
10 Da sprach sie zu Abraham: Treibe diese Magd hinaus mit ihrem Sohn; denn der Sohn dieser Magd soll nicht erben mit meinem Sohn Isaak!
11 Dieses Wort missfiel Abraham sehr um seines Sohnes willen.
12 Aber Gott sprach zu Abraham: Es soll dir nicht leidtun wegen des Knaben und wegen deiner Magd! Höre in allem, was Sarah dir sagt, auf ihre Stimme! Denn in Isaak soll dir ein Same berufen werden.
13 Doch ich will auch den Sohn der Magd zu einem Volk machen, weil er dein Same ist.
14 Da stand Abraham am Morgen früh auf und nahm Brot und einen Schlauch voll Wasser, gab es Hagar und legte es auf ihre Schulter; er gab ihr auch den Knaben und schickte sie fort. Und sie ging und irrte umher in der Wüste von Beerscheba.
15 Als nun das Wasser im Schlauch ausgegangen war, warf sie den Knaben unter einen Strauch,
16 und sie ging hin und setzte sich gegenüber, einen Bogenschuss weit entfernt; denn sie sprach: Ich kann das Sterben des Knaben nicht mit ansehen! Und sie saß ihm gegenüber, erhob ihre Stimme und weinte.
17 Da erhörte Gott die Stimme des Knaben, und der Engel Gottes rief der Hagar vom Himmel her zu und sprach zu ihr: Was ist mit dir, Hagar? Fürchte dich nicht; denn Gott hat die Stimme des Knaben erhört, da, wo er liegt.
18 Steh auf, nimm den Knaben und halte ihn fest an deiner Hand, denn ich will ihn zu einem großen Volk machen!
19 Und Gott öffnete ihr die Augen, dass sie einen Wasserbrunnen sah. Da ging sie hin und füllte den Schlauch mit Wasser und gab dem Knaben zu trinken.
20 Und Gott war mit dem Knaben; der wuchs heran und wohnte in der Wüste und wurde ein Bogenschütze.
21 Und er wohnte in der Wüste Paran, und seine Mutter nahm ihm eine Frau aus dem Land Ägypten.
Der Bund Abrahams mit Abimelech in Beerscheba
22 Und es geschah zur selben Zeit, da redete Abimelech in Begleitung seines Heerführers Pichol mit Abraham und sprach: Gott ist mit dir in allem, was du tust.
23 So schwöre mir nun hier bei Gott, dass du weder an mir noch an meinen Kindern, noch an meinen Kindeskindern treulos handeln wirst. Dieselbe Freundschaft, die ich dir bewiesen habe, sollst du auch an mir beweisen und an dem Land, in dem du ein Fremdling bist!
24 Da sprach Abraham: Ich will schwören!
25 Und Abraham stellte Abimelech zur Rede wegen des Wasserbrunnens, den die Knechte Abimelechs mit Gewalt genommen hatten.
26 Da antwortete Abimelech: Ich weiß nichts davon; wer hat das getan? Du hast mir gar nichts erzählt, und ich habe auch nichts davon gehört bis zu diesem Tag!
27 Da nahm Abraham Schafe und Rinder und gab sie Abimelech, und sie machten beide einen Bund miteinander.
28 Und Abraham stellte sieben Lämmer beiseite.
29 Da sprach Abimelech zu Abraham: Was sollen die sieben Lämmer hier, die du beiseitegestellt hast?
30 Er antwortete: Du sollst sieben Lämmer von meiner Hand nehmen, damit sie ein Zeugnis für mich seien, dass ich diesen Brunnen gegraben habe!
31 Daher wird der Ort Beerscheba[a] genannt, weil sie beide dort einander schworen.
32 Als sie aber den Bund in Beerscheba geschlossen hatten, machten sich Abimelech und Pichol, sein Heerführer, auf und zogen wieder in das Land der Philister.
33 [Abraham] aber pflanzte eine Tamariske in Beerscheba und rief dort den Namen des Herrn, des ewigen Gottes,[b] an.
34 Und Abraham hielt sich lange Zeit als Fremdling im Land der Philister auf.

21 Az Örökkévaló megáldotta Sárát, és beteljesítette, amit neki ígért. 2 Sára tehát áldott állapotba került, és fiút szült Ábrahámnak — annak ellenére, hogy Ábrahám már idős volt — éppen abban az időben, amelyet az Örökkévaló előre megmondott. 3 Ábrahám Izsáknak[a] nevezte a fiát, akit Sára szült neki. 4 Amikor Izsák nyolc napos lett, Ábrahám körülmetélte a fiát, ahogy azt Isten korábban megparancsolta. 5 Amikor Izsák született, Ábrahám száz éves volt.
6 Sára ezt mondta: „Nézzétek, milyen nagy örömöt szerzett nekem Isten! Aki csak hallja, velem együtt nevet! 7 Ugyan ki mondta volna Ábrahámnak, hogy Sára még csecsemőt fog szoptatni? S nézzétek! Fiút szültem neki vénségére!”

Ábrahám elküldi Hágárt és Izmáelt
9 Sára látta, amint Ábrahám másik fia — akit az egyiptomi Hágár szült — játszik Izsákkal.[b] 10 Akkor Sára Ábrahámhoz ment, és ezt kérte: „Kérlek, küldd el innen ezt a szolgálót és a fiát! Ne örököljön az ő fia az én fiammal együtt!”
11 Ez azonban nagyon nehezére esett Ábrahámnak, a fia, Izmáel miatt. 12 Akkor Isten megszólította: „Ábrahám, ne gondold, hogy ez valami rosszat jelent, és ne aggódj a fiad és a szolgáló miatt! Tedd meg mindazt, amit Sára kért tőled, mert az utódaidra vonatkozó ígéreteim Izsák által fognak beteljesedni! 13 Azonban a szolgáló fiának utódait is nemzetté szaporítom. Hiszen ő is a te fiad!”
14 Másnap reggel Ábrahám korán fölkelt, készített útra való ételt és víztömlőt. A csomagot fölsegítette Hágár vállára. Azután végleg elküldte a fiával, Izmáellel együtt.
Hágár útnak indult, és Beérseba pusztájában bolyongott. 15 Amikor kifogyott a víz a tömlőből, lefektette Izmáelt egy bokor árnyékába, 16 maga pedig egy nyíllövésnyi távolságra odébb ment. Azt gondolta: „Nem bírom végignézni, hogy hal szomjan a fiam!” — és keserves sírásra fakadt.
17 De Isten meghallotta a gyermek sírását, és Isten angyala kiáltott az égből Hágárnak: „Miért sírsz, Hágár? Ne félj, mert Isten meghallotta a gyermek sírását! 18 Kelj csak föl, fogd kézen a gyermeket, és viseld gondját, mert nagy nemzetté teszem őt!” 19 Ekkor Isten megnyitotta Hágár szemét, aki észrevett egy forrást a közelben, odament, megtöltötte a tömlőt vízzel, és megitatta a fiát.
20 Isten továbbra is gondot viselt Izmáelre, aki felnőtt a pusztában, megtanult az íjjal bánni, és vadász lett. 21 Párán vidékén tanyázott a pusztaságban, és amikor eljött az ideje, anyja Egyiptomból hozott neki feleséget.
Ábrahám szövetséget köt Abímelekkel
22 Történt egyszer, hogy Abímelek és Píkól, a sereg vezére felkeresték Ábrahámot. Ezt mondta neki Abímelek: „Ábrahám, látjuk, hogy Isten van veled mindenben, amit teszel. 23 Esküdj meg Istenre, hogy soha nem ártasz nekem vagy utódaimnak, hanem ugyanolyan hűséggel leszel irántam és népem iránt — akik között jövevényként laksz —, mint ahogyan én bántam veled!” 24 Ábrahám ezt válaszolta: „Megesküszöm, hogy úgy lesz!”
25 Azután szemrehányást tett Abímeleknek, hogy annak pásztorai erőszakkal elfoglaltak egy kutat, amely Ábrahámé volt. 26 Abímelek így védekezett: „Nem tudtam róla! Te sem mondtad eddig, most hallottam erről először. Nem tudom, melyik szolgám tehetett ilyet!” 27 Akkor Ábrahám juhokat, kecskéket és marhákat ajándékozott Abímeleknek, és szövetséget kötöttek egymással.
28 Majd Ábrahám különválasztott a nyájából hét fiatal nőstény juhot. 29 Abímelek pedig megkérdezte: „Miért választottad külön ezeket? Mit jelent ez?” 30 „Fogadd el tőlem ezt a hét juhot annak bizonyítékául, hogy én ástam azt a kutat!” — felelte Ábrahám. 31-32 Ezért hívják azt a helyet mindmáig Beérsebának[c] — mert ott kötöttek szövetséget, és esküvel erősítették meg. Azután Abímelek és Píkól, a sereg vezére visszatért a filiszteusok földjére. 33 Ábrahám egy tamariszkuszfát ültetett Beérsebában, és imádta az Örökkévalót, az Örök Istent. 34 Ezután még hosszú ideig tartózkodott a filiszteusok földjén.

21 L’Eternel intervint en faveur de Sara comme il l’avait annoncé et il accomplit pour elle ce qu’il avait promis. 2 Elle devint enceinte et, au temps promis par Dieu, elle donna un fils à Abraham, bien que celui-ci fût très âgé. 3 Il appela ce fils qui lui était né de Sara : Isaac (Il a ri). 4 Il le circoncit à l’âge de huit jours, comme Dieu le lui avait ordonné[a].
5 Abraham avait cent ans au moment de la naissance d’Isaac. 6 Sara dit alors : Dieu m’a donné une occasion de rire, et tous ceux qui l’apprendront riront à mon sujet. 7 Elle ajouta : Qui aurait dit à Abraham qu’un jour Sara allaiterait des enfants ? Et cependant, je lui ai donné un fils dans sa vieillesse.
Le renvoi d’Agar et d’Ismaël
8 L’enfant grandit et Sara cessa de l’allaiter. Le jour où l’on sevra Isaac, Abraham fit un grand festin[b].
9 Sara vit rire le fils qu’Agar l’Egyptienne avait donné à Abraham[c]. 10 Alors elle dit à Abraham : Chasse cette esclave et son fils, car le fils de cette esclave ne partagera pas l’héritage avec mon fils Isaac[d].
11 Cette parole affligea beaucoup Abraham, à cause de son fils. 12 Mais Dieu lui dit : Ne t’afflige pas à cause du garçon et de ta servante. Accorde à Sara tout ce qu’elle te demandera. Car c’est par Isaac que te sera suscitée une descendance[e]. 13 Néanmoins, je ferai aussi du fils de l’esclave l’ancêtre d’un peuple, car lui aussi est issu de toi.
14 Le lendemain, de bon matin, Abraham prépara du pain et une outre d’eau qu’il donna à Agar en les plaçant sur son épaule ; il lui donna aussi l’enfant et la congédia. Elle partit à l’aventure et s’égara dans le désert de Beer-Sheva. 15 L’eau qui était dans l’outre s’épuisa, alors elle laissa l’enfant sous un buisson 16 et alla s’asseoir à l’écart, à une centaine de mètres plus loin[f], car elle se disait : Je ne veux pas voir mourir mon enfant.
Elle resta assise en face de lui, gémissant et pleurant. 17 Dieu entendit[g] la voix du garçon et l’ange de Dieu appela Agar du haut du ciel et lui dit : Qu’as-tu, Agar ? N’aie pas peur, car Dieu a entendu le garçon là où il est. 18 Lève-toi, relève le garçon et prends-le par la main, car je ferai de lui un grand peuple.
19 Dieu lui ouvrit les yeux, et elle aperçut un puits. Elle alla remplir d’eau son outre et donna à boire au garçon. 20 Dieu fut avec lui. Il grandit et vécut dans le désert où il devint un chasseur à l’arc. 21 Il s’établit dans le désert de Parân, et sa mère choisit pour lui une femme du pays d’Egypte.
Abraham fait alliance avec Abimélek
22 A la même époque, Abimélek accompagné de Pikol, chef de son armée, vint trouver Abraham et lui dit : Dieu fait réussir tout ce que tu entreprends. 23 Maintenant donc, jure-moi ici par le nom de Dieu de ne trahir ni moi, ni mes enfants, ni ma descendance, mais d’agir envers moi et envers ce pays où tu séjournes avec la même bonté dont j’ai usé envers toi.
24 Abraham répondit : Oui, je le jure.
25 Il saisit l’occasion pour lui faire des doléances au sujet d’un puits dont les serviteurs d’Abimélek s’étaient emparés.
26 Abimélek lui répondit : J’ignore qui a fait cela. Toi-même, tu ne m’en avais pas informé et je l’apprends aujourd’hui.
27 Abraham choisit des moutons, des chèvres et des bovins et en fit cadeau à Abimélek et tous deux conclurent ensemble une alliance. 28 Puis Abraham mit à part sept jeunes brebis du troupeau. 29 Abimélek lui demanda : Pourquoi as-tu mis ces sept brebis à part ?
30 Il répondit : Accepte ces sept jeunes brebis de ma main : cela me servira d’attestation que c’est bien moi qui ai fait creuser ce puits.
31 C’est pourquoi on a appelé ce lieu-là Beer-Sheva (le Puits du Serment), parce que c’est là que tous deux prêtèrent serment.
32 Ainsi ils firent alliance à Beer-Sheva, puis Abimélek partit avec Pikol, le chef de son armée, et ils s’en retournèrent au pays des Philistins. 33 Abraham planta un tamaris à Beer-Sheva et il invoqua l’Eternel, le Dieu d’éternité. 34 Il séjourna encore longtemps au pays des Philistins.
