²³ so now, ^(A)swear to me here by God that you will not deal falsely with me or with my offspring or with my descendants, but according to the kindness that I have shown to you, you shall show to me and to the land in which you have resided.”

¹⁴ And if I am still alive, will you not show me the faithfulness of the Lord, so that I do not die? ¹⁵ And ^(A)you shall never cut off your loyalty to my house, not even when the Lord cuts off every one of the enemies of David from the face of the earth.” ¹⁶ So Jonathan made a covenant with the house of David, saying, “^(B)May the Lord demand it from the hands of David’s enemies.” ¹⁷ And Jonathan made David vow again because of his love for him, because ^(C)he loved him as he loved his own life.

⁶ let seven men from his sons be given to us, and we will ^[a]hang them ^(A)before the Lord in Gibeah of Saul, ^(B)the chosen of the Lord.” And the king said, “I will give them.”

⁷ But the king spared ^(C)Mephibosheth, the son of Jonathan, the son of Saul, ^(D)because of the oath of the Lord which was between them, between David and Saul’s son Jonathan. ⁸ So the king took the two sons of ^(E)Rizpah the daughter of Aiah, Armoni and Mephibosheth whom she had borne to Saul, and the five sons of ^[b](F)Merab the daughter of Saul, whom she had borne to Adriel the son of Barzillai the ^(G)Meholathite.
