9 They said to him, “Where is Sarah your wife?” And he said, “She is (A)in the tent.” 10 The Lord said, “I will surely return to you (B)about this time next year, and (C)Sarah your wife shall have a son.” And Sarah was listening at the tent door behind him. 11 Now (D)Abraham and Sarah were old, advanced in years. The way of women had ceased to be with Sarah. 12 (E)So Sarah laughed to herself, saying, (F)“After I am worn out, and (G)my lord is old, shall I have pleasure?” 13 The Lord said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh and say, ‘Shall I indeed bear a child, now that I am old?’ 14 (H)Is anything too hard[a] for the Lord? (I)At the appointed time I will return to you, about this time next year, and Sarah shall have a son.” 15 But Sarah denied it,[b] saying, “I did not laugh,” for she was afraid. He said, “No, but you did laugh.”
16 Then the men set out from there, and they looked down toward Sodom. And Abraham went with them to set them on their way. 17 The Lord said, (J)“Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do, 18 seeing that Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be (K)blessed in him? 19 For I have (L)chosen[c] him, that he may command his children and his household after him to keep the way of the Lord by doing righteousness and justice, so that the Lord may bring to Abraham what he has promised him.” 20 Then the Lord said, “Because (M)the outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is great and their sin is very grave, 21 (N)I will go down to see whether they have done altogether[d] according to the outcry that has come to me. And if not, (O)I will know.”
Abraham Intercedes for Sodom
22 (P)So the men turned from there and went toward Sodom, but Abraham (Q)still stood before the Lord. 23 Then Abraham drew near and said, (R)“Will you indeed sweep away the righteous with the wicked? 24 Suppose there are fifty righteous within the city. Will you then sweep away the place and not spare it for the fifty righteous who are in it? 25 Far be it from you to do such a thing, to put the righteous to death with the wicked, (S)so that the righteous fare as the wicked! Far be that from you! (T)Shall not the Judge of all the earth do what is just?” 26 And the Lord said, (U)“If I find at Sodom fifty righteous in the city, I will spare the whole place for their sake.”
27 Abraham answered and said, (V)“Behold, I have undertaken to speak to the Lord, I who am but dust and ashes. 28 Suppose five of the fifty righteous are lacking. Will you destroy the whole city for lack of five?” And he said, “I will not destroy it if I find forty-five there.” 29 Again he spoke to him and said, “Suppose forty are found there.” He answered, “For the sake of forty I will not do it.” 30 Then he said, “Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak. Suppose thirty are found there.” He answered, “I will not do it, if I find thirty there.” 31 He said, “Behold, I have undertaken to speak to the Lord. Suppose twenty are found there.” He answered, “For the sake of twenty I will not destroy it.” 32 Then he said, (W)“Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak again but this once. Suppose ten are found there.” He answered, “For the sake of ten I will not destroy it.” 33 And the Lord went his way, when he had finished speaking to Abraham, and Abraham returned to his place.
God Rescues Lot
19 The (X)two angels came to Sodom in the evening, and Lot was sitting in the gate of Sodom. When Lot saw them, he rose to meet them and bowed himself with his face to the earth 2 and said, “My lords, (Y)please turn aside to your servant's house and spend the night (Z)and wash your feet. Then you may rise up early and go on your way.” They said, (AA)“No; we will spend the night in the town square.” 3 But he pressed them strongly; so they turned aside to him and entered his house. And he made them a feast and baked unleavened bread, and they ate.
4 But before they lay down, the men of the city, the men of Sodom, both young and old, all the people to the last man, surrounded the house. 5 (AB)And they called to Lot, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? (AC)Bring them out to us, that we (AD)may know them.”

9 “Where is your wife Sarah?”(A) they asked him.
“There, in the tent,(B)” he said.
10 Then one of them said, “I will surely return to you about this time next year,(C) and Sarah your wife will have a son.”(D)
Now Sarah was listening at the entrance to the tent, which was behind him. 11 Abraham and Sarah were already very old,(E) and Sarah was past the age of childbearing.(F) 12 So Sarah laughed(G) to herself as she thought, “After I am worn out and my lord(H) is old, will I now have this pleasure?”
13 Then the Lord said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh and say, ‘Will I really have a child, now that I am old?’(I) 14 Is anything too hard for the Lord?(J) I will return to you at the appointed time next year,(K) and Sarah will have a son.”(L)
15 Sarah was afraid, so she lied and said, “I did not laugh.”
But he said, “Yes, you did laugh.”
Abraham Pleads for Sodom
16 When the men(M) got up to leave, they looked down toward Sodom, and Abraham walked along with them to see them on their way. 17 Then the Lord said, “Shall I hide from Abraham(N) what I am about to do?(O) 18 Abraham will surely become a great and powerful nation,(P) and all nations on earth will be blessed through him.[a] 19 For I have chosen him(Q), so that he will direct his children(R) and his household after him to keep the way of the Lord(S) by doing what is right and just,(T) so that the Lord will bring about for Abraham what he has promised him.”(U)
20 Then the Lord said, “The outcry against Sodom(V) and Gomorrah is so great(W) and their sin so grievous(X) 21 that I will go down(Y) and see if what they have done is as bad as the outcry that has reached me. If not, I will know.”
22 The men(Z) turned away and went toward Sodom,(AA) but Abraham remained standing before the Lord.[b](AB) 23 Then Abraham approached him and said: “Will you sweep away the righteous with the wicked?(AC) 24 What if there are fifty righteous people in the city? Will you really sweep it away and not spare[c] the place for the sake of the fifty righteous people in it?(AD) 25 Far be it from you to do such a thing(AE)—to kill the righteous with the wicked, treating the righteous(AF) and the wicked alike.(AG) Far be it from you! Will not the Judge(AH) of all the earth do right?”(AI)
26 The Lord said, “If I find fifty righteous people in the city of Sodom, I will spare the whole place for their sake.(AJ)”
27 Then Abraham spoke up again: “Now that I have been so bold as to speak to the Lord, though I am nothing but dust and ashes,(AK) 28 what if the number of the righteous is five less than fifty? Will you destroy the whole city for lack of five people?”
“If I find forty-five there,” he said, “I will not destroy it.”
29 Once again he spoke to him, “What if only forty are found there?”
He said, “For the sake of forty, I will not do it.”
30 Then he said, “May the Lord not be angry,(AL) but let me speak. What if only thirty can be found there?”
He answered, “I will not do it if I find thirty there.”
31 Abraham said, “Now that I have been so bold as to speak to the Lord, what if only twenty can be found there?”
He said, “For the sake of twenty, I will not destroy it.”
32 Then he said, “May the Lord not be angry, but let me speak just once more.(AM) What if only ten can be found there?”
He answered, “For the sake of ten,(AN) I will not destroy it.”
33 When the Lord had finished speaking(AO) with Abraham, he left,(AP) and Abraham returned home.(AQ)
Sodom and Gomorrah Destroyed
19 The two angels(AR) arrived at Sodom(AS) in the evening, and Lot(AT) was sitting in the gateway of the city.(AU) When he saw them, he got up to meet them and bowed down with his face to the ground.(AV) 2 “My lords,” he said, “please turn aside to your servant’s house. You can wash your feet(AW) and spend the night and then go on your way early in the morning.”
“No,” they answered, “we will spend the night in the square.”(AX)
3 But he insisted(AY) so strongly that they did go with him and entered his house.(AZ) He prepared a meal for them, baking bread without yeast,(BA) and they ate.(BB) 4 Before they had gone to bed, all the men from every part of the city of Sodom(BC)—both young and old—surrounded the house. 5 They called to Lot, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us so that we can have sex with them.”(BD)

10 And he said, I will certainly return unto thee according to the time of life; and, lo, Sarah thy wife shall have a son. And Sarah heard it in the tent door, which was behind him.
11 Now Abraham and Sarah were old and well stricken in age; and it ceased to be with Sarah after the manner of women.
12 Therefore Sarah laughed within herself, saying, After I am waxed old shall I have pleasure, my lord being old also?
13 And the Lord said unto Abraham, Wherefore did Sarah laugh, saying, Shall I of a surety bear a child, which am old?
14 Is any thing too hard for the Lord? At the time appointed I will return unto thee, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son.
15 Then Sarah denied, saying, I laughed not; for she was afraid. And he said, Nay; but thou didst laugh.
16 And the men rose up from thence, and looked toward Sodom: and Abraham went with them to bring them on the way.
17 And the Lord said, Shall I hide from Abraham that thing which I do;
18 Seeing that Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him?
19 For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the Lord, to do justice and judgment; that the Lord may bring upon Abraham that which he hath spoken of him.
20 And the Lord said, Because the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grievous;
21 I will go down now, and see whether they have done altogether according to the cry of it, which is come unto me; and if not, I will know.
22 And the men turned their faces from thence, and went toward Sodom: but Abraham stood yet before the Lord.
23 And Abraham drew near, and said, Wilt thou also destroy the righteous with the wicked?
24 Peradventure there be fifty righteous within the city: wilt thou also destroy and not spare the place for the fifty righteous that are therein?
25 That be far from thee to do after this manner, to slay the righteous with the wicked: and that the righteous should be as the wicked, that be far from thee: Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?
26 And the Lord said, If I find in Sodom fifty righteous within the city, then I will spare all the place for their sakes.
27 And Abraham answered and said, Behold now, I have taken upon me to speak unto the Lord, which am but dust and ashes:
28 Peradventure there shall lack five of the fifty righteous: wilt thou destroy all the city for lack of five? And he said, If I find there forty and five, I will not destroy it.
29 And he spake unto him yet again, and said, Peradventure there shall be forty found there. And he said, I will not do it for forty's sake.
30 And he said unto him, Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak: Peradventure there shall thirty be found there. And he said, I will not do it, if I find thirty there.
31 And he said, Behold now, I have taken upon me to speak unto the Lord: Peradventure there shall be twenty found there. And he said, I will not destroy it for twenty's sake.
32 And he said, Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak yet but this once: Peradventure ten shall be found there. And he said, I will not destroy it for ten's sake.
33 And the Lord went his way, as soon as he had left communing with Abraham: and Abraham returned unto his place.
19 And there came two angels to Sodom at even; and Lot sat in the gate of Sodom: and Lot seeing them rose up to meet them; and he bowed himself with his face toward the ground;
2 And he said, Behold now, my lords, turn in, I pray you, into your servant's house, and tarry all night, and wash your feet, and ye shall rise up early, and go on your ways. And they said, Nay; but we will abide in the street all night.
3 And he pressed upon them greatly; and they turned in unto him, and entered into his house; and he made them a feast, and did bake unleavened bread, and they did eat.
4 But before they lay down, the men of the city, even the men of Sodom, compassed the house round, both old and young, all the people from every quarter:
5 And they called unto Lot, and said unto him, Where are the men which came in to thee this night? bring them out unto us, that we may know them.
