La distruzione di Sodoma
19 I due angeli arrivarono a Sòdoma sul far della sera, mentre Lot stava seduto alla porta di Sòdoma. Non appena li ebbe visti, Lot si alzò, andò loro incontro e si prostrò con la faccia a terra. 2 E disse: «Miei signori, venite in casa del vostro servo: vi passerete la notte, vi laverete i piedi e poi, domattina, per tempo, ve ne andrete per la vostra strada». Quelli risposero: «No, passeremo la notte sulla piazza». 3 Ma egli insistette tanto che vennero da lui ed entrarono nella sua casa. Egli preparò per loro un banchetto, fece cuocere gli azzimi e così mangiarono. 4 Non si erano ancora coricati, quand'ecco gli uomini della città, cioè gli abitanti di Sòdoma, si affollarono intorno alla casa, giovani e vecchi, tutto il popolo al completo. 5 Chiamarono Lot e gli dissero: «Dove sono quegli uomini che sono entrati da te questa notte? Falli uscire da noi, perché possiamo abusarne!». 6 Lot uscì verso di loro sulla porta e, dopo aver chiuso il battente dietro di sé, 7 disse: «No, fratelli miei, non fate del male! 8 Sentite, io ho due figlie che non hanno ancora conosciuto uomo; lasciate che ve le porti fuori e fate loro quel che vi piace, purché non facciate nulla a questi uomini, perché sono entrati all'ombra del mio tetto». 9 Ma quelli risposero: «Tirati via! Quest'individuo è venuto qui come straniero e vuol fare il giudice! Ora faremo a te peggio che a loro!». E spingendosi violentemente contro quell'uomo, cioè contro Lot, si avvicinarono per sfondare la porta. 10 Allora dall'interno quegli uomini sporsero le mani, si trassero in casa Lot e chiusero il battente; 11 quanto agli uomini che erano alla porta della casa, essi li colpirono con un abbaglio accecante dal più piccolo al più grande, così che non riuscirono a trovare la porta.
12 Quegli uomini dissero allora a Lot: «Chi hai ancora qui? Il genero, i tuoi figli, le tue figlie e quanti hai in città, falli uscire da questo luogo. 13 Perché noi stiamo per distruggere questo luogo: il grido innalzato contro di loro davanti al Signore è grande e il Signore ci ha mandati a distruggerli». 14 Lot uscì a parlare ai suoi generi, che dovevano sposare le sue figlie, e disse: «Alzatevi, uscite da questo luogo, perché il Signore sta per distruggere la città!». Ma parve ai suoi generi che egli volesse scherzare. 15 Quando apparve l'alba, gli angeli fecero premura a Lot, dicendo: «Su, prendi tua moglie e le tue figlie che hai qui ed esci per non essere travolto nel castigo della città». 16 Lot indugiava, ma quegli uomini presero per mano lui, sua moglie e le sue due figlie, per un grande atto di misericordia del Signore verso di lui; lo fecero uscire e lo condussero fuori della città. 17 Dopo averli condotti fuori, uno di loro disse: «Fuggi, per la tua vita. Non guardare indietro e non fermarti dentro la valle: fuggi sulle montagne, per non essere travolto!». 18 Ma Lot gli disse: «No, mio Signore! 19 Vedi, il tuo servo ha trovato grazia ai tuoi occhi e tu hai usato una grande misericordia verso di me salvandomi la vita, ma io non riuscirò a fuggire sul monte, senza che la sciagura mi raggiunga e io muoia. 20 Vedi questa città: è abbastanza vicina perché mi possa rifugiare là ed è piccola cosa! Lascia che io fugga lassù - non è una piccola cosa? - e così la mia vita sarà salva». 21 Gli rispose: «Ecco, ti ho favorito anche in questo, di non distruggere la città di cui hai parlato. 22 Presto, fuggi là perché io non posso far nulla, finché tu non vi sia arrivato». Perciò quella città si chiamò Zoar.
23 Il sole spuntava sulla terra e Lot era arrivato a Zoar, 24 quand'ecco il Signore fece piovere dal cielo sopra Sòdoma e sopra Gomorra zolfo e fuoco proveniente dal Signore. 25 Distrusse queste città e tutta la valle con tutti gli abitanti delle città e la vegetazione del suolo. 26 Ora la moglie di Lot guardò indietro e divenne una statua di sale.
27 Abramo andò di buon mattino al luogo dove si era fermato davanti al Signore; 28 contemplò dall'alto Sòdoma e Gomorra e tutta la distesa della valle e vide che un fumo saliva dalla terra, come il fumo di una fornace.
29 Così, quando Dio distrusse le città della valle, Dio si ricordò di Abramo e fece sfuggire Lot alla catastrofe, mentre distruggeva le città nelle quali Lot aveva abitato.
Origine dei Moabiti e degli Ammoniti
30 Poi Lot partì da Zoar e andò ad abitare sulla montagna, insieme con le due figlie, perché temeva di restare in Zoar, e si stabilì in una caverna con le sue due figlie. 31 Ora la maggiore disse alla più piccola: «Il nostro padre è veccho e non c'è nessuno in questo territorio per unirsi a noi, secondo l'uso di tutta la terra. 32 Vieni, facciamo bere del vino a nostro padre e poi corichiamoci con lui, così faremo sussistere una discendenza da nostro padre». 33 Quella notte fecero bere del vino al loro padre e la maggiore andò a coricarsi con il padre; ma egli non se ne accorse, né quando essa si coricò, né quando essa si alzò. 34 All'indomani la maggiore disse alla più piccola: «Ecco, ieri io mi sono coricata con nostro padre: facciamogli bere del vino anche questa notte e và tu a coricarti con lui; così faremo sussistere una discendenza da nostro padre». 35 Anche quella notte fecero bere del vino al loro padre e la più piccola andò a coricarsi con lui; ma egli non se ne accorse, né quando essa si coricò, né quando essa si alzò. 36 Così le due figlie di Lot concepirono dal loro padre. 37 La maggiore partorì un figlio e lo chiamò Moab. Costui è il padre dei Moabiti che esistono fino ad oggi. 38 Anche la più piccola partorì un figlio e lo chiamò «Figlio del mio popolo». Costui è il padre degli Ammoniti che esistono fino ad oggi.

19 3 Lot receiveth two Angels into his house. 4 The filthy lusts of the Sodomites. 16 Lot is delivered. 14 Sodom is destroyed. 26 Lot’s wife is made a pillar of salt. 33 Lot’s daughters lie with their father, of whom came Moab and Ammon.
1 And in the evening there came two [a]Angels to Sodom: and Lot sat at the gate of Sodom, and Lot saw them, and rose up to meet them, and he bowed himself with his face to the ground.
2 And he said, See my lords, I pray you turn in now into your servant’s house, and tarry all night, and (A)wash your feet, and ye shall rise up early and go your ways. Who said, Nay, but we will abide in the street all night.
3 Then [b]he pressed upon them earnestly, and they turned in to him, and came to his house, and he made them a feast, and did bake unleavened bread, and they [c]did eat.
4 But before they went to bed, the men of the city, even the men of Sodom compassed the house round about, from the young even to the old, [d]all the people from all quarters.
5 Who crying unto Lot said to him, Where are the men, which came to thee this night? bring them out unto us, that we may know them.
6 Then Lot went out at the door unto them, and shut the door after him,
7 And said, I pray you, my brethren, do not so wickedly.
8 Behold now, I have two [e]daughters, which have not known man: them will I bring out now unto you, and do them as seemeth you good: only unto these men do nothing: [f]for therefore are they come under the shadow of my roof.
9 Then they said, Away hence: and they said, He is come alone as a stranger, and shall he judge and rule? we will now deal worse with thee than with them. So they pressed sore upon Lot (B)himself, and came to break the door.
10 But the men put forth their hand, and pulled Lot into the house to them, and shut to the door.
11 Then they smote the men that were at the door of the house, with blindness, both small and great, so that they were weary in [g]seeking the door.
12 ¶ Then the men said unto Lot, Whom hast thou yet here? either son-in-law, or thy sons or thy daughters, or whatsoever thou hast in the city, bring it out of this place.
13 For [h]we will destroy this place, because the (C)cry of them is great before the Lord, and the Lord hath sent us to destroy it.
14 Then Lot went out and spake unto his sons-in-law, which [i]married his daughters, and said, Arise, get you out of this place: for the Lord will destroy the city, but he seemed to his sons-in-law, as though he had mocked.
15 ¶ And when the morning arose, the Angels hasted Lot, saying, Arise, take thy wife and thy two daughters [j]which are here, lest thou be destroyed in the punishment of the city.
16 And as he [k]prolonged the time, the men caught both him and his wife, and his two daughters by the hands (the Lord being merciful unto him) and they brought him forth, and set him without the city.
17 ¶ And when they had brought them out, the Angel said, Escape for thy life: [l]look not behind thee, neither tarry thou in all the plain: escape into the mountain, lest thou be destroyed.
18 And Lot said unto them, Not so, I pray thee, my Lord.
19 Behold now, thy servant hath found grace in thy sight, and thou hast magnified thy mercy, which thou hast showed unto me in saving my life: and I cannot escape in the mountain, lest some evil take me, and I die.
20 See now this city hereby to flee unto, which is a little one: Oh let me escape thither: is it not a [m]little one, and my soul shall live?
21 Then he said unto him, Behold, I have received [n]thy request also concerning this thing, that I will not overthrow this city, for the which thou hast spoken.
22 Haste thee, save thee there: for I can do [o]nothing till thou come thither. Therefore the name of the city was called [p]Zoar.
23 ¶ The sun did rise upon the earth, when Lot entered into Zoar.
24 Then the Lord (D)rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah, brimstone and fire from the Lord out of heaven,
25 And overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that grew upon the earth.
26 ¶ Now his wife behind him looked back, and she became a [q]pillar of salt.
27 ¶ And Abraham rising up early in the morning went to the place, where he had stood before the Lord,
28 And looking toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the plain, behold, he saw the smoke of the land mounting up as the smoke of a furnace.
29 ¶ But yet when God destroyed the cities of the plain, God thought upon Abraham, and sent Lot out from the midst of the destruction, when he overthrew the cities, wherein Lot dwelled.
30 ¶ Then Lot went up out of Zoar, and dwelt in the mountain with his two daughters for he [r]feared to tarry in Zoar, but dwelt in a cave, he and his two daughters.
31 And the elder said unto the younger, Our father is old, and there is not a man in the [s]earth, to come in unto us after the manner of all the earth.
32 Come, we will make our father [t]drink wine, and lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father.
33 So they made their father drink wine that night, and the elder went and lay with her father: but he perceived not, neither when she lay down, neither when she rose up.
34 And on the morrow the elder said to the younger, Behold, yester night lay I with my father: let us make him drink wine this night also, and go thou and lie with him, that we may [u]preserve seed of our father.
35 So they made their father drink wine that night also, and the younger arose, and lay with him: but he perceived it not, when she lay down, neither when she rose up.
36 Thus were [v]both the daughters of Lot with child by their father.
37 And the elder bare a son, and she called his name Moab: the same is the father of the [w]Moabites unto this day.
38 And the younger bare a son also, and she called his name [x]Ben-Ammi: the same is the father of the Ammonites unto this day.

Sodom and Gomorrah Destroyed
19 The two angels(A) arrived at Sodom(B) in the evening, and Lot(C) was sitting in the gateway of the city.(D) When he saw them, he got up to meet them and bowed down with his face to the ground.(E) 2 “My lords,” he said, “please turn aside to your servant’s house. You can wash your feet(F) and spend the night and then go on your way early in the morning.”
“No,” they answered, “we will spend the night in the square.”(G)
3 But he insisted(H) so strongly that they did go with him and entered his house.(I) He prepared a meal for them, baking bread without yeast,(J) and they ate.(K) 4 Before they had gone to bed, all the men from every part of the city of Sodom(L)—both young and old—surrounded the house. 5 They called to Lot, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us so that we can have sex with them.”(M)
6 Lot went outside to meet them(N) and shut the door behind him 7 and said, “No, my friends. Don’t do this wicked thing. 8 Look, I have two daughters who have never slept with a man. Let me bring them out to you, and you can do what you like with them. But don’t do anything to these men, for they have come under the protection of my roof.”(O)
9 “Get out of our way,” they replied. “This fellow came here as a foreigner,(P) and now he wants to play the judge!(Q) We’ll treat you worse than them.” They kept bringing pressure on Lot and moved forward to break down the door.
10 But the men(R) inside reached out and pulled Lot back into the house and shut the door. 11 Then they struck the men who were at the door of the house, young and old, with blindness(S) so that they could not find the door.
12 The two men said to Lot, “Do you have anyone else here—sons-in-law, sons or daughters, or anyone else in the city who belongs to you?(T) Get them out of here, 13 because we(U) are going to destroy this place. The outcry to the Lord against its people is so great(V) that he has sent us to destroy it.”(W)
14 So Lot went out and spoke to his sons-in-law, who were pledged to marry[a] his daughters. He said, “Hurry and get out of this place, because the Lord is about to destroy the city!(X)” But his sons-in-law thought he was joking.(Y)
15 With the coming of dawn, the angels urged Lot, saying, “Hurry! Take your wife and your two daughters who are here, or you will be swept away(Z) when the city is punished.(AA)”
16 When he hesitated, the men grasped his hand and the hands of his wife and of his two daughters(AB) and led them safely out of the city, for the Lord was merciful to them.(AC) 17 As soon as they had brought them out, one of them said, “Flee for your lives!(AD) Don’t look back,(AE) and don’t stop anywhere in the plain!(AF) Flee to the mountains(AG) or you will be swept away!”
18 But Lot said to them, “No, my lords,[b] please! 19 Your[c] servant has found favor in your[d] eyes,(AH) and you[e] have shown great kindness(AI) to me in sparing my life. But I can’t flee to the mountains;(AJ) this disaster will overtake me, and I’ll die. 20 Look, here is a town near enough to run to, and it is small. Let me flee to it—it is very small, isn’t it? Then my life will be spared.”
21 He said to him, “Very well, I will grant this request(AK) too; I will not overthrow the town you speak of. 22 But flee there quickly, because I cannot do anything until you reach it.” (That is why the town was called Zoar.[f](AL))
23 By the time Lot reached Zoar,(AM) the sun had risen over the land. 24 Then the Lord rained down burning sulfur(AN) on Sodom and Gomorrah(AO)—from the Lord out of the heavens.(AP) 25 Thus he overthrew those cities(AQ) and the entire plain,(AR) destroying all those living in the cities—and also the vegetation in the land.(AS) 26 But Lot’s wife looked back,(AT) and she became a pillar of salt.(AU)
27 Early the next morning Abraham got up and returned to the place where he had stood before the Lord.(AV) 28 He looked down toward Sodom and Gomorrah, toward all the land of the plain, and he saw dense smoke rising from the land, like smoke from a furnace.(AW)
29 So when God destroyed the cities of the plain,(AX) he remembered(AY) Abraham, and he brought Lot out of the catastrophe(AZ) that overthrew the cities where Lot had lived.(BA)
Lot and His Daughters
30 Lot and his two daughters left Zoar(BB) and settled in the mountains,(BC) for he was afraid to stay in Zoar. He and his two daughters lived in a cave. 31 One day the older daughter said to the younger, “Our father is old, and there is no man around here to give us children—as is the custom all over the earth. 32 Let’s get our father to drink wine and then sleep with him and preserve our family line(BD) through our father.”(BE)
33 That night they got their father to drink wine, and the older daughter went in and slept with him. He was not aware of it when she lay down or when she got up.(BF)
34 The next day the older daughter said to the younger, “Last night I slept with my father. Let’s get him to drink wine again tonight, and you go in and sleep with him so we can preserve our family line through our father.”(BG) 35 So they got their father to drink wine(BH) that night also, and the younger daughter went in and slept with him. Again he was not aware of it when she lay down or when she got up.(BI)
36 So both of Lot’s daughters became pregnant by their father.(BJ) 37 The older daughter had a son, and she named him Moab[g];(BK) he is the father of the Moabites(BL) of today. 38 The younger daughter also had a son, and she named him Ben-Ammi[h]; he is the father of the Ammonites[i](BM) of today.
