Jacob Comes to Canaan

18 Then Jacob came [a]safely to (A)the city of (B)Shechem, which is in the land of Canaan, when he came from Padan Aram; and he pitched his tent before the city. 19 And (C)he bought the parcel of [b]land, where he had pitched his tent, from the children of Hamor, Shechem’s father, for one hundred pieces of money. 20 Then he erected an altar there and called it (D)El[c] Elohe Israel.

The Dinah Incident

34 Now (E)Dinah the daughter of Leah, whom she had borne to Jacob, went out to see the daughters of the land. And when Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, prince of the country, saw her, he (F)took her and lay with her, and violated her. His soul [d]was strongly attracted to Dinah the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the young woman and spoke [e]kindly to the young woman. So Shechem (G)spoke to his father Hamor, saying, “Get me this young woman as a wife.”

And Jacob heard that he had defiled Dinah his daughter. Now his sons were with his livestock in the field; so Jacob (H)held[f] his peace until they came. Then Hamor the father of Shechem went out to Jacob to speak with him.

18 And Jacob cometh in to Shalem, a city of Shechem, which [is] in the land of Canaan, in his coming from Padan-Aram, and encampeth before the city,

19 and he buyeth the portion of the field where he hath stretched out his tent, from the hand of the sons of Hamor, father of Shechem, for a hundred kesitah;

20 and he setteth up there an altar, and proclaimeth at it God -- the God of Israel.

34 And Dinah, daughter of Leah, whom she hath borne to Jacob, goeth out to look on the daughters of the land,

and Shechem, son of Hamor the Hivite, a prince of the land, seeth her, and taketh her, and lieth with her, and humbleth her;

and his soul cleaveth to Dinah, daughter of Jacob, and he loveth the young person, and speaketh unto the heart of the young person.

And Shechem speaketh unto Hamor his father, saying, `Take for me this damsel for a wife.'

And Jacob hath heard that he hath defiled Dinah his daughter, and his sons were with his cattle in the field, and Jacob kept silent till their coming.

And Hamor, father of Shechem, goeth out unto Jacob to speak with him;

Jacob Settles in Shechem

18 Now Jacob came safely to the city of (A)Shechem, which is in the land of Canaan, when he came from (B)Paddan-aram, and camped before the city. 19 (C)He bought the plot of land where he had pitched his tent from the hand of the sons of Hamor, Shechem’s father, for a hundred [a]pieces of money. 20 Then he erected there an altar and called it [b]El-Elohe-Israel.

The Treachery of Jacob’s Sons

34 Now (D)Dinah the daughter of Leah, whom she had borne to Jacob, went out to [c]visit the daughters of the land. When Shechem the son of Hamor (E)the Hivite, the prince of the land, saw her, he took her and lay with her and raped her. But [d]he was deeply attracted to Dinah the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the girl and [e]spoke tenderly to her. So Shechem (F)spoke to his father Hamor, saying, “Get me this young woman as a wife.” Now Jacob heard that he had defiled his daughter Dinah; but his sons were with his livestock in the field, so Jacob said nothing until they came in. Then Hamor the father of Shechem went out to Jacob to speak with him.
