Genesis 6:9-11:32
New American Standard Bible 1995
9 These are the records of the generations of Noah. Noah was a (A)righteous man, [a](B)blameless in his [b]time; Noah (C)walked with God. 10 Noah [c]became the father of three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth.
11 Now the earth was (D)corrupt in the sight of God, and the earth was (E)filled with violence. 12 God looked on the earth, and behold, it was corrupt; for (F)all flesh had corrupted their way upon the earth.
13 Then God said to Noah, “(G)The end of all flesh has come before Me; for the earth is filled with violence because of them; and behold, I am about to destroy them with the earth. 14 Make for yourself an ark of gopher wood; you shall make the ark with rooms, and shall [d]cover it inside and out with pitch. 15 This is how you shall make it: the length of the ark three hundred [e]cubits, its breadth fifty [f]cubits, and its height thirty [g]cubits. 16 You shall make a [h]window for the ark, and finish it to a cubit from [i]the top; and set the door of the ark in the side of it; you shall make it with lower, second, and third decks. 17 Behold, (H)I, even I am bringing the flood of water upon the earth, to destroy all flesh in which is the breath of life, from under heaven; everything that is on the earth shall perish. 18 But I will establish (I)My covenant with you; and (J)you shall enter the ark—you and your sons and your wife, and your sons’ wives with you. 19 (K)And of every living thing of all flesh, you shall bring two of every kind into the ark, to keep them alive with you; they shall be male and female. 20 (L)Of the birds after their kind, and of the animals after their kind, of every creeping thing of the ground after its kind, two of every kind will come to you to keep them alive. 21 As for you, take for yourself some of all (M)food which is edible, and gather it to yourself; and it shall be for food for you and for them.” 22 (N)Thus Noah did; according to all that God had commanded him, so he did.
The Flood
7 Then the Lord said to Noah, “Enter the ark, you and all your household, for you alone I have seen to be (O)righteous before Me in this [j]time. 2 You shall take [k]with you of every (P)clean animal [l]by sevens, a male and his female; and of the animals that are not clean two, a male and his female; 3 also of the birds of the [m]sky, [n]by sevens, male and female, to keep [o]offspring alive on the face of all the earth. 4 For after (Q)seven more days, I will send rain on the earth (R)forty days and forty nights; and I will blot out from the face of the land (S)every living thing that I have made.” 5 (T)Noah did according to all that the Lord had commanded him.
6 Now Noah was (U)six hundred years old when the flood of water [p]came upon the earth. 7 Then (V)Noah and his sons and his wife and his sons’ wives with him entered the ark because of the water of the flood. 8 (W)Of clean animals and animals that are not clean and birds and everything that creeps on the ground, 9 there went into the ark to Noah [q]by twos, male and female, as God had commanded Noah. 10 It came about after (X)the seven days, that the water of the flood [r]came upon the earth. 11 In the (Y)six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, on the seventeenth day of the month, on the same day all (Z)the fountains of the great deep burst open, and the [s]floodgates of the sky were opened. 12 (AA)The rain [t]fell upon the earth for forty days and forty nights.
13 On the very same day (AB)Noah and Shem and Ham and Japheth, the sons of Noah, and Noah’s wife and the three wives of his sons with them, entered the ark, 14 they and every beast after its kind, and all the cattle after [u]their kind, and every creeping thing that creeps on the earth after its kind, and every bird after its kind, [v]all sorts of birds. 15 So they went into the ark to Noah, (AC)by twos of all flesh in which was the breath of life. 16 Those that entered, male and female of all flesh, entered as God had commanded him; and the Lord closed it behind him.
17 Then the flood [w]came upon the earth for (AD)forty days, and the water increased and lifted up the ark, so that it rose above the earth. 18 The water prevailed and increased greatly upon the earth, and the ark [x]floated on the [y]surface of the water. 19 The water prevailed more and more upon the earth, so that all the high mountains [z]everywhere under the heavens were covered. 20 The water prevailed fifteen [aa]cubits higher, (AE)and the mountains were covered. 21 (AF)All flesh that [ab]moved on the earth perished, birds and cattle and beasts and every swarming thing that swarms upon the earth, and all mankind; 22 of all that was on the dry land, all (AG)in whose nostrils was the breath of the spirit of life, died. 23 Thus He blotted out [ac]every living thing that was upon the face of the land, from man to animals to creeping things and to birds of the [ad]sky, and they were blotted out from the earth; and only (AH)Noah was left, together with those that were with him in the ark. 24 (AI)The water prevailed upon the earth one hundred and fifty days.
The Flood Subsides
8 But (AJ)God remembered Noah and all the beasts and all the cattle that were with him in the ark; and (AK)God caused a wind to pass over the earth, and the water subsided. 2 Also (AL)the fountains of the deep and the [ae]floodgates of the sky were closed, and (AM)the rain from the sky was restrained; 3 and the water receded steadily from the earth, and at the end (AN)of one hundred and fifty days the water decreased. 4 In the seventh month, on the seventeenth day of the month, (AO)the ark rested upon the mountains of Ararat. 5 The water decreased steadily until the tenth month; in the tenth month, on the first day of the month, the tops of the mountains became visible.
6 Then it came about at the end of forty days, that Noah opened the (AP)window of the ark which he had made; 7 and he sent out a raven, and it [af]flew here and there until the water was dried up [ag]from the earth. 8 Then he sent out a dove from him, to see if the water was abated from the face of the land; 9 but the dove found no resting place for the sole of her foot, so she returned to him into the ark, for the water was on the [ah]surface of all the earth. Then he put out his hand and took her, and brought her into the ark to himself. 10 So he waited yet another seven days; and again he sent out the dove from the ark. 11 The dove came to him toward [ai]evening, and behold, in her [aj]beak was a freshly picked olive leaf. So Noah knew that the water was abated from the earth. 12 Then he waited yet another seven days, and sent out (AQ)the dove; but she did not return to him again.
13 Now it came about in the (AR)six hundred and first year, in the first month, on the first of the month, the water was dried up [ak]from the earth. Then Noah removed the covering of the ark, and looked, and behold, the [al]surface of the ground was dried up. 14 In the second month, on the twenty-seventh day of the month, the earth was dry. 15 Then God spoke to Noah, saying, 16 “Go out of the ark, you and your wife and your sons and your sons’ wives with you. 17 Bring out with you every living thing of all flesh that is with you, birds and animals and every creeping thing that creeps on the earth, that they may [am](AS)breed abundantly on the earth, and be fruitful and multiply on the earth.” 18 So Noah went out, and his sons and his wife and his sons’ wives with him. 19 Every beast, every creeping thing, and every bird, everything that moves on the earth, went out [an]by their families from the ark.
20 Then Noah built (AT)an altar to the Lord, and took of every (AU)clean animal and of every clean bird and offered (AV)burnt offerings on the altar. 21 The Lord (AW)smelled the soothing aroma; and the Lord said [ao]to Himself, “I will never again (AX)curse the ground on account of man, for (AY)the [ap]intent of man’s heart is evil from his youth; (AZ)and I will never again [aq]destroy every living thing, as I have done.
22 “While the earth remains,
Seedtime and harvest,
And cold and heat,
And (BA)summer and winter,
And (BB)day and night
Shall not cease.”
Covenant of the Rainbow
9 And God blessed Noah and his sons and said to them, “(BC)Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth. 2 The fear of you and the terror of you will be on every beast of the earth and on every bird of the [ar]sky; with everything that creeps on the ground, and all the fish of the sea, into your hand they are given. 3 Every moving thing that is alive shall be food for you; I give all to you, (BD)as I gave the green plant. 4 Only you shall not eat flesh with its life, that is, (BE)its blood. 5 Surely I will require [as](BF)your lifeblood; [at](BG)from every beast I will require it. And [au]from every man, [av]from every man’s brother I will require the life of man.
6 “(BH)Whoever sheds man’s blood,
By man his blood shall be shed,
For (BI)in the image of God
He made man.
7 “As for you, (BJ)be fruitful and multiply;
[aw]Populate the earth abundantly and multiply in it.”
8 Then God spoke to Noah and to his sons with him, saying, 9 “Now behold, (BK)I Myself do establish My covenant with you, and with your [ax]descendants after you; 10 and with every living creature that is with you, the birds, the cattle, and every beast of the earth with you; of all that comes out of the ark, even every beast of the earth. 11 I establish My covenant with you; and all flesh shall (BL)never again be cut off by the water of the flood, (BM)neither shall there again be a flood to destroy the earth.” 12 God said, “This is (BN)the sign of the covenant which I am making between Me and you and every living creature that is with you, for [ay]all successive generations; 13 I set My (BO)bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a sign of a covenant between Me and the earth. 14 It shall come about, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the bow will be seen in the cloud, 15 and (BP)I will remember My covenant, which is between Me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and (BQ)never again shall the water become a flood to destroy all flesh. 16 When the bow is in the cloud, then I will look upon it, to remember the (BR)everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth.” 17 And God said to Noah, “This is the sign of the covenant which I have established between Me and all flesh that is on the earth.”
18 Now the sons of Noah who came out of the ark were Shem and Ham and Japheth; and (BS)Ham was the father of Canaan. 19 These three were the sons of Noah, and (BT)from these the whole earth was [az]populated.
20 Then Noah began [ba]farming and planted a vineyard. 21 He drank of the wine and (BU)became drunk, and uncovered himself inside his tent. 22 Ham, the father of Canaan, (BV)saw the nakedness of his father, and told his two brothers outside. 23 But Shem and Japheth took a garment and laid it upon both their shoulders and walked backward and covered the nakedness of their father; and their faces were [bb]turned away, so that they did not see their father’s nakedness. 24 When Noah awoke from his wine, he knew what his youngest son had done to him. 25 So he said,
26 He also said,
“(BY)Blessed be the Lord,
The God of Shem;
And let Canaan be [bd]his servant.
27 “(BZ)May God enlarge Japheth,
And let him dwell in the tents of Shem;
And let Canaan be [be]his servant.”
28 Noah lived three hundred and fifty years after the flood. 29 So all the days of Noah were nine hundred and fifty years, and he died.
Descendants of Noah
10 Now these are the records of the generations of Shem, Ham, and Japheth, the sons of Noah; and sons were born to them after the flood.
2 (CA)The sons of Japheth were (CB)Gomer and Magog and (CC)Madai and (CD)Javan and Tubal and (CE)Meshech and Tiras. 3 The sons of Gomer were (CF)Ashkenaz and [bf]Riphath and (CG)Togarmah. 4 The sons of Javan were Elishah and (CH)Tarshish, Kittim and [bg]Dodanim. 5 From these the coastlands of the nations [bh]were separated into their lands, every one according to his language, according to their families, into their nations.
6 (CI)The sons of Ham were Cush and Mizraim and Put and Canaan. 7 The sons of Cush were (CJ)Seba and Havilah and Sabtah and (CK)Raamah and Sabteca; and the sons of Raamah were (CL)Sheba and (CM)Dedan. 8 Now Cush [bi]became the father of Nimrod; he [bj]became a mighty one on the earth. 9 He was a mighty hunter before the Lord; therefore it is said, “Like Nimrod a mighty hunter before the Lord.” 10 The beginning of his kingdom was [bk](CN)Babel and Erech and Accad and Calneh, in the land of (CO)Shinar. 11 From that land he went forth (CP)into Assyria, and built Nineveh and Rehoboth-Ir and Calah, 12 and Resen between Nineveh and Calah; that is the great city. 13 Mizraim [bl]became the father of (CQ)Ludim and Anamim and Lehabim and Naphtuhim 14 and (CR)Pathrusim and Casluhim (from which came the Philistines) and Caphtorim.
15 Canaan [bm]became the father of (CS)Sidon, his firstborn, and (CT)Heth 16 and (CU)the Jebusite and the Amorite and the Girgashite 17 and the Hivite and the Arkite and the Sinite 18 and the Arvadite and the Zemarite and the Hamathite; and afterward the families of the Canaanite were spread abroad. 19 (CV)The territory of the Canaanite [bn]extended from Sidon as you go toward Gerar, as far as Gaza; as you go toward (CW)Sodom and Gomorrah and Admah and Zeboiim, as far as Lasha. 20 These are the sons of Ham, according to their families, according to their languages, by their lands, by their nations.
21 Also to Shem, the father of all the children of Eber, and the [bo]older brother of Japheth, children were born. 22 (CX)The sons of Shem were (CY)Elam and Asshur and (CZ)Arpachshad and (DA)Lud and Aram. 23 The sons of Aram were (DB)Uz and Hul and Gether and Mash. 24 Arpachshad [bp]became the father of (DC)Shelah; and Shelah [bq]became the father of Eber. 25 (DD)Two sons were born to Eber; the name of the one was [br]Peleg, for in his days the earth was divided; and his brother’s name was Joktan. 26 Joktan [bs]became the father of Almodad and Sheleph and Hazarmaveth and Jerah 27 and Hadoram and Uzal and Diklah 28 and [bt]Obal and Abimael and Sheba 29 and Ophir and Havilah and Jobab; all these were the sons of Joktan. 30 Now their [bu]settlement [bv]extended from Mesha as you go toward Sephar, the hill country of the east. 31 These are the sons of Shem, according to their families, according to their languages, by their lands, according to their nations.
32 These are the families of the sons of Noah, according to their genealogies, by their nations; and (DE)out of these the nations were separated on the earth after the flood.
Universal Language, Babel, Confusion
11 Now the whole earth [bw]used the same language and [bx]the same words. 2 It came about as they journeyed east, that they found a plain in the land (DF)of Shinar and [by]settled there. 3 They said to one another, “Come, let us make bricks and burn them thoroughly.” And they used brick for stone, and they used (DG)tar for mortar. 4 They said, “Come, let us build for ourselves a city, and a tower whose top (DH)will reach into heaven, and let us make for ourselves (DI)a name, otherwise we (DJ)will be scattered abroad over the face of the whole earth.” 5 (DK)The Lord came down to see the city and the tower which the sons of men had built. 6 The Lord said, “Behold, they are one people, and they all have [bz](DL)the same language. And this is what they began to do, and now nothing which they purpose to do will be [ca]impossible for them. 7 Come, (DM)let Us go down and there (DN)confuse their [cb]language, so that they will not understand one another’s [cc]speech.” 8 So the Lord (DO)scattered them abroad from there over the face of the whole earth; and they stopped building the city. 9 Therefore its name was called [cd](DP)Babel, because there the Lord confused the [ce]language of the whole earth; and from there the Lord scattered them abroad over the face of the whole earth.
Descendants of Shem
10 (DQ)These are the records of the generations of Shem. Shem was one hundred years old, and [cf]became the father of Arpachshad two years after the flood; 11 and Shem lived five hundred years after he became the father of Arpachshad, and he had other sons and daughters.
12 Arpachshad lived thirty-five years, and became the father of Shelah; 13 and Arpachshad lived four hundred and three years after he became the father of Shelah, and he had other sons and daughters.
14 Shelah lived thirty years, and became the father of Eber; 15 and Shelah lived four hundred and three years after he became the father of Eber, and he had other sons and daughters.
16 Eber lived thirty-four years, and became the father of Peleg; 17 and Eber lived four hundred and thirty years after he became the father of Peleg, and he had other sons and daughters.
18 Peleg lived thirty years, and became the father of Reu; 19 and Peleg lived two hundred and nine years after he became the father of Reu, and he had other sons and daughters.
20 Reu lived thirty-two years, and became the father of Serug; 21 and Reu lived two hundred and seven years after he became the father of Serug, and he had other sons and daughters.
22 Serug lived thirty years, and became the father of Nahor; 23 and Serug lived two hundred years after he became the father of Nahor, and he had other sons and daughters.
24 Nahor lived twenty-nine years, and became the father of (DR)Terah; 25 and Nahor lived one hundred and nineteen years after he became the father of Terah, and he had other sons and daughters.
26 Terah lived seventy years, and became (DS)the father of Abram, Nahor and Haran.
27 Now these are the records of the generations of Terah. Terah became the father of Abram, Nahor and Haran; and (DT)Haran became the father of (DU)Lot. 28 Haran died [cg]in the presence of his father Terah in the land of his birth, in (DV)Ur of the Chaldeans. 29 Abram and (DW)Nahor took wives for themselves. The name of Abram’s wife was (DX)Sarai; and the name of Nahor’s wife was (DY)Milcah, the daughter of Haran, the father of Milcah [ch]and Iscah. 30 (DZ)Sarai was barren; she had no child.
31 Terah took Abram his son, and Lot the son of Haran, his grandson, and Sarai his daughter-in-law, his son Abram’s wife; and they went out [ci]together from (EA)Ur of the Chaldeans in order to enter the land of Canaan; and they went as far as Haran, and [cj]settled there. 32 The days of Terah were two hundred and five years; and Terah died in Haran.

Tree of Life Version
Parashat Noah
9 These are the genealogies of Noah. Noah was a righteous man. He was blameless among his generation. Noah continually walked with God. 10 Noah fathered three sons: Shem, Ham and Japheth. 11 Now the earth was ruined before God, and the earth was filled with violence. 12 God saw the earth, and behold it was ruined because all flesh had corrupted their way upon the earth.
Instructions for the Ark
13 Then God said to Noah, “The end of all flesh is coming before Me, for the earth is filled with violence because of them. Behold, I am about to bring ruin upon them along with the land. 14 Make for yourself an ark of gopher wood. You shall make the ark with compartments and smear pitch on it, both inside and out. 15 Now this is how you shall make it: the length of the ark 300 cubits, its breadth 50 cubits, and its height 30 cubits. 16 You shall make a roof for the ark, and you shall finish it to within a cubit from the top. You shall put the door of the ark in its side. You shall make it with lower, second, and third stories. [a] 17 Now I am about to bring the flood—water upon the land—to destroy all flesh in which is the spirit of life from under the sky. Everything that is on the land will perish. 18 But I will establish My covenant with you. So you shall come into the ark—you, your sons, your wife, and your sons’ wives with you. 19 Also of every living thing, of all flesh, you shall bring two of everything—male and female—into the ark to keep alive with you. 20 Of the flying creatures according to their kind, of the livestock according to their kind, of all the crawling creatures of the ground according to their kind—two of everything will come to you to keep them alive. 21 As for you: take for yourself every kind of edible food and gather it to yourself. It will be food for you and for them.”
22 So Noah did according to all that God commanded him; he did so exactly.
Deliverance Through the Flood
7 Then Adonai said to Noah, “Come—you and all your household—into the ark. For you only do I perceive as righteous before Me in this generation. 2 Of every clean animal you shall take with you seven of each kind, male and female; and of the animals which themselves are not clean two, male and female; 3 also of the flying creatures of the sky seven of every kind, male and female, to keep offspring alive on the face of the whole land. 4 For in seven more days, I am going to make it rain upon the land forty days and forty nights, and I will wipe out all existence that I made from the face of the ground. 5 So Noah did all just as Adonai commanded him.
6 Now Noah was 600 years old when the flood came—water upon the land. 7 So Noah, his sons, his wife, and his sons’ wives, entered the ark because of the floodwaters. 8 Of the clean animals and unclean animals, the flying creatures and everything that crawls on the ground, 9 two by two they came to Noah, into the ark, male and female, just as God commanded Noah.
10 After the seven days, the floodwaters were upon the land. 11 In the six-hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, on the seventeenth day of the month, on this day, all the water sources of the great deep burst open, and the windows of the sky were opened. 12 Then there was rain upon the land 40 days and 40 nights.
13 On that same day Noah, along with Noah’s sons Shem, Ham and Japheth, Noah’s wife and the three wives of Noah’s sons with them, entered the ark, 14 they and every animal according to its kind, and all the livestock according to its kind, and every crawling creature that crawls on the land according to its kind, and every flying creature according to its kind, every bird, every winged creature. 15 So to Noah and into the ark they went by twos—all flesh in which was the spirit of life. 16 Those that came, male and female of all flesh, came just as God commanded him. Then Adonai shut him in.
17 The flood was forty days upon the land, and the waters increased and lifted the ark, so that it rose above the land. 18 The waters overpowered and became very mighty over the land, and the ark drifted on the surface of the water. 19 The waters completely overpowered the land so that all the high mountains beneath the entire sky were covered. 20 The waters rose 15 cubits higher, as the mountains were covered. 21 All flesh perished—those that crawl on the land, the flying creatures, livestock, wild animals, all creatures that swarm upon the land, and all humankind. 22 Everything that had the breath of the spirit of life in its nostrils—everything on dry land—died. 23 So He wiped out all existence that was upon the surface of the ground, everything from people to livestock, to crawling creatures, and to flying creatures of the sky. They were wiped out off the land. Only Noah and those with him in the ark survived. 24 The waters overpowered the land for 150 days.
8 Then God remembered Noah and all the wild animals and all the livestock that were with him in the ark. So God caused a wind to pass over the land and the water subsided. 2 Also the sources of the deep and the windows of the skies were closed up, and the rain from the sky was held back. 3 The waters kept receding gradually from upon the land and the waters decreased by the end of 150 days. 4 The ark came to rest in the seventh month, on the seventeenth day of the month, upon the mountains of Ararat. 5 The waters went on decreasing until the tenth month. In the tenth month, on the first day of the month, the tops of the mountains appeared.
6 It was at the end of forty days that Noah opened the window of the ark that he had made. 7 Then he sent out a raven and it kept going back and forth until the waters were drying up from the land. 8 Then he sent out a dove to see whether the waters had receded from the surface of the ground. 9 But the dove did not find a resting place for the sole of her foot. She returned to him in the ark because water covered the surface of the whole land. He stretched out his hand and he took her, and brought her to him into the ark. 10 So he waited yet another seven days and again he sent the dove out from the ark. 11 The dove came to him at evening, and surprisingly—a freshly plucked olive leaf was in its mouth. So Noah knew that the waters had receded from the land. 12 After he waited seven more days, he sent out the dove, but she did not return to him again.
13 It was in his six-hundred-and first year—in the first month, on the first day of the month—that the waters had dried up from the land. Then Noah removed the cover of the ark and he looked, and behold, the surface of the ground had dried up. 14 By the second month, on the twenty-seventh day of the month, the land was dry.

15 Then God spoke to Noah, saying, 16 “Come out of the ark, you and your wife, your sons and your sons’ wives with you. 17 Every animal that is with you of all flesh, including the flying creatures, livestock and every crawling creature that crawls on the land, bring out with you, and let them swarm in the land and be fruitful and multiply upon the land.”
18 So Noah came out, with his sons, his wife, and his sons’ wives. 19 Every animal—every crawling creature, every flying creature, everything that crawls upon the land—came out from the ark in their families.
20 Then Noah built an altar to Adonai and he took of every clean domestic animal and of every clean flying creature and he offered burnt offerings on the altar. 21 When Adonai smelled the soothing aroma, Adonai said in His heart, “I will never again curse the ground on account of man, even though the inclination of the heart of humankind is evil from youth. Nor will I ever again smite all living creatures, as I have done.
22 While all the days of the land remain,
seedtime and harvest,
cold and heat,
summer and winter,
day and night will not cease.”
Covenant with Noah’s Descendants
9 God blessed Noah and his sons, and He said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the land. 2 The fear and terror of you will be on every wild animal, and on every flying creature of the sky, with everything that crawls on the ground and with all the fish of the sea—into your hand they are given. 3 Every crawling thing that is alive will be food for you, as are the green plants—I have now given you everything. 4 Only flesh with its life—that is, its blood—you must not eat! 5 Surely your lifeblood will I avenge. From every animal and from every person will I avenge it. From every person’s brother will I avenge that person’s life.
6 The one who sheds human blood,
by a human will his blood be shed,
for in God’s image He made humanity.
7 But as for you, be fruitful and multiply! Flourish in the land and multiply in it.”
8 Then God said to Noah and to his sons with him, saying, 9 “Now I, behold, I am about to establish My covenant with you, and with your seed after you, 10 and with every living creature that is with you, including the flying creatures, the livestock, and every wild animal with you, of all that is coming out of the ark—every animal of the earth. 11 I will confirm My covenant with you—never again will all flesh be cut off by the waters of the flood, and never again will there be a flood to ruin the land.”
12 Then God said, “This is the sign of the covenant that I am making between Me and you, and every living creature that is with you for all future generations. 13 My rainbow do I place in the cloud, and it will be a sign of the covenant between Me and the land. 14 Whenever I bring clouds over the land and the rainbow appears in the clouds, 15 I will remember My covenant that is between Me and you and every living creature of all flesh. Never again will the waters become a flood to destroy all flesh. 16 When the rainbow is in the cloud, I will look at it, to remember the perpetual covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the land.”
17 Then God said to Noah, “This is the sign of the covenant that I have confirmed between Me and all flesh that is on the land.”
Dispersion of Noah’s Family
18 Noah’s sons who came out from the ark were Shem, Ham and Japheth, and Ham was the father of Canaan. 19 These three were Noah’s sons, and from these the whole earth dispersed.
20 Then Noah, a man of the soil, was first to plant a vineyard. 21 He drank some of the wine, got drunk, and was uncovered in his tent. 22 Then Ham, Canaan’s father, saw his father’s private parts and told his two brothers outside. 23 So Shem and Japheth took the cloak and laid it over both their shoulders and walked backwards and with it covered their father’s private parts. But their faces were turned away, so they did not see their father’s private parts.
24 When Noah woke up from his wine, he learned what his youngest son had done to him. 25 So he said,
“Cursed is Canaan: the lowest slave will he be to his brothers.”
26 He also said,
“Blessed be Adonai, God of Shem,
and let Canaan be his servant.
27 May God enlarge Japheth,
may he dwell in the tents of Shem,
and may Canaan be his slave.”
28 Now Noah lived 350 years after the flood. 29 So all Noah’s days were 950 years. Then he died.
10 And these are the genealogical records of Noah’s sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth. Sons were born to them after the flood.
2 Japheth’s sons were Gomer, Magog, Madai, Javan, Tubal, Meshech and Tiras. 3 Gomer’s sons were Ashkenaz, Riphath and Togarmah. 4 Javan’s sons were Elishah and Tarshish, Kittites and Dodanites. 5 From these the coastlands of the nations spread out in their lands, each one according to his language, according to their families, into their nations.
6 Ham’s sons were Cush, Mizraim, Put and Canaan. 7 Cush’s sons were Seba, Havilah, Sabtah, Raamah, and Sabteca. And Raamah’s sons were Sheba, and Dedan.
8 Now Cush fathered Nimrod. He started to become mighty in the land. 9 He was a mighty hunter before Adonai. This is why it is said, “Like Nimrod, a mighty hunter before Adonai.” 10 The beginning of his kingdom included Babel, Erech, Accad and Calneh, in the land of Shinar. 11 From that land he went out to Assyria and built Nineveh, Rechovot-ir, Calah 12 and Resen, between Nineveh and Calah—it is the great city.
13 Mizraim fathered the Ludites, the Anamites, the Lehabites, the Naphtuhites, 14 the Pathrusites, the Casluhites—from whom came the Philistines—and the Caphtorites.
15 Canaan fathered Sidon his firstborn, Heth, 16 the Jebusite, the Amorite, the Girgashite, 17 the Hivite, the Arkite, the Sinite, 18 the Arvadite, the Zemarite and the Hamathite—and afterwards, the Canaanite families were scattered. 19 Now the Canaanite border was from Zidon, as you go toward Gerar, as far as Gaza; as you go toward Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim, as far as Lasha.
20 These are Ham’s sons according to their families, according to their languages, in their lands, in their nations.
21 Sons were also born to Shem, who was Japheth’s older brother and the father of all the sons of Eber. 22 Shem’s sons were Elam, Asshur, Arpachshad, Lud and Aram. 23 Aram’s sons were Uz, Hul, Gether and Mash. 24 Arpachshad fathered Shelah, and Shelah fathered Eber. 25 Two sons were born to Eber. The name of the first was Peleg—because in his days the land was divided—and his brother’s name was Joktan. 26 Joktan fathered Elmodad, Sheleph, Hazarmaveth, Jerah, 27 Hadoram, Uzal, Diklah, 28 Obal, Abimael, Sheba, 29 Ophir, Havilah and Jobab. All of these are Joktan’s sons. 30 Their dwelling place was from Mesha till you come toward Sephar, the eastern hill country. 31 These are Shem’s sons, according to their families, according to their languages, in their lands, according to their nations.
32 These are the families of the sons of Noah according to their genealogies in their nations, and from these the nations were dispersed on the earth after the flood.
Tower of Babel
11 Now the entire earth had the same language with the same vocabulary. 2 When they traveled eastward, they found a valley-plain in the land of Shinar and settled there. 3 They said to one another, “Come! Let’s make bricks and bake them until they’re hard.” So they used bricks for stone, and tar for mortar.
4 Then they said, “Come! Let’s build ourselves a city, with a tower whose top reaches into heaven. So let’s make a name for ourselves, or else we will be scattered over the face of the whole land.”
5 Then Adonai came down to see the city and the tower that the sons of man had built. 6 Adonai said, “Look, the people are one and all of them have the same language. So this is what they have begun to do. Now, nothing they plan to do will be impossible. 7 Come! Let Us go down and confuse their language there, so that they will not understand each other’s language.”
8 So Adonai scattered them from there over the face of the entire land, and they stopped building the city. 9 This is why it is named Babel, because Adonai confused the languages of the entire world there, and from there Adonai scattered them over the face of the entire world.
From Shem to Abram
10 These are the genealogical records of Shem: Shem was 100 years old when he fathered Arpachshad—two years after the flood. 11 Shem lived 500 years after he fathered Arpachshad, and he fathered sons and daughters. 12 Arpachshad lived 35 years when he fathered Shelah. 13 Arpachshad lived 403 years after he fathered Shelah, and fathered sons and daughters. 14 Shelah lived 30 years and he fathered Eber. 15 Shelah lived 403 years after he fathered Eber, and fathered sons and daughters. 16 Eber lived 34 years and he fathered Peleg. 17 Eber lived 430 years after he fathered Peleg, and he fathered sons and daughters. 18 Peleg lived 30 years and he fathered Reu. 19 Peleg lived 209 years after he fathered Reu, and he fathered sons and daughters. 20 Reu lived 32 years and he fathered Serug. 21 Reu lived 207 years after he fathered Serug, and he fathered sons and daughters. 22 Serug lived 30 years and fathered Nahor. 23 Serug lived 200 years after he fathered Nahor, and he fathered sons and daughters. 24 Nahor lived 27 years and he fathered Terah. 25 Nahor lived 119 years after he fathered Terah, and he fathered sons and daughters. 26 Terah lived 70 years when he fathered Abram, Nahor and Haran.
27 These are Terah’s genealogies: Terah fathered Abram, Nahor and Haran. Haran fathered Lot. 28 Haran died before Terah his father, in the land of his birth, in Ur of the Chaldeans. 29 Abram and Nahor took wives for themselves. The name of Abram’s wife was Sarai, and the name of Nahor’s wife was Milcah—the daughter of Haran, father of Milcah and Iscah. 30 Sarai was barren; she did not have a child.
31 Terah took Abram his son and Lot, Haran’s son, his grandson, and Sarai his daughter-in-law, his son Abram’s wife, and he took them out of Ur of the Chaldeans to go to the land of Canaan. But when they came to Haran, they settled there.
32 Terah’s days were 205 years, and Terah died in Haran.

Your Husband is Your Maker
54 “Sing, barren one, who has not given birth.
burst into singing and shout,
you who have not travailed.
For more are the children of the desolate
than the children of the married one,”
says Adonai.
2 “Enlarge the place of your tent,
stretch out your tabernacle curtains.
Do not hold back—
lengthen your cords,
strengthen your stakes.
3 For you will spread out to the right hand and to the left.
Your offspring will possess the nations
and will resettle the desolate cities.
4 Fear not, for you will not be ashamed.
Nor cringe, for you will not be disgraced.
For you will forget the shame of your youth,
and you will remember the reproach of your widowhood no more.
5 For your Maker is your husband[a]
—Adonai-Tzva’ot is His Name—
the Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer.
He will be called God of all the earth.
6 “For Adonai has called you back
like a wife deserted and grieved in spirit,
like a wife of one’s youth that is rejected,”
says your God.
7 “For a brief moment I deserted you,
but I will regather you with great compassion.
8 In a surge of anger
I hid My face from you a moment,
but with everlasting kindness
I will have compassion on you,”
says Adonai your Redeemer.
9 “For this is like the waters of Noah to Me:
for as I swore that the waters of Noah should no more cover the earth,
so I have sworn that I will not be angry with you,
nor will I rebuke you.
10 Though the mountains depart and the hills be shaken,
My love will not depart from you,
nor will My covenant of peace be shaken,
says Adonai who has compassion on you.
11 Afflicted one, storm-tossed, unconsoled,
behold, I set your stones in antimony,
lay your foundations with sapphires,
12 make your pinnacles of rubies,
your gates of crystal,
and all your walls of precious stones.
13 All your children will be taught by Adonai.
Your children will have great shalom.
No Weapon Formed Against You
14 “In righteousness you will be established.
You will be far from oppression
—for you will not fear—
and from terror—
for it will not come near you.
15 Behold, anyone fiercely attacking is not from Me.
Whoever stirs up strife with you will fall because of you.
16 Behold, I created the smith
who blows the fire of coals
and produces a weapon for its work,
and I created the destroyer to ruin.
17 No weapon formed against you will prosper
and you will condemn every tongue that rises against you in judgment.
This is the heritage of Adonai’s servants—
their vindication is from Me.”
It is a declaration of Adonai.
Trees of the Field will Clap Their Hands
55 “Ho, everyone who thirsts,
come to the water,[b]
and you who have no money,
come, buy and eat.
Come, buy wine and milk
without money and without cost!
2 Why do you spend money for what is not bread?
Your wages for what does not satisfy?
Listen diligently to Me, and eat what is good,
and delight yourself in abundance.
3 Incline your ear and come to Me.
Listen, so that your soul may live.
I will make an everlasting covenant with you,
the trustworthy loyalty to David.
4 Behold, I made him a witness to the peoples,
a leader and commander for the peoples.
5 Behold, you will summon a nation you do not know,
and a nation that did not know you will run to you,
because of Adonai your God
and the Holy One of Israel,

20 Now having been questioned by the Pharisees (A)as to when the kingdom of God was coming, He answered them and said, “The kingdom of God is not coming with [a](B)signs to be observed; 21 nor will (C)they say, ‘Look, here it is!’ or, ‘There it is!’ For behold, the kingdom of God is [b]in your midst.”

18 For Messiah once suffered for sins also—the righteous for the unrighteous[a]—in order to bring you to God. He was put to death in the flesh, but made alive by the Ruach. 19 Through the Ruach He also went and preached to the spirits in prison. 20 Long ago they disobeyed while God kept waiting patiently, in the days of Noah as the ark was being built. In that ark a few (that is, eight souls) were brought safely through water. 21 Corresponding to that, immersion now brings you to safety—not the removal of dirt from the flesh, but a pledge to God of a good conscience—through the resurrection of Messiah Yeshua. 22 He has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels and authorities and powers subjected to Him.
