Adam's Descendants to Noah

This is the book of the generations of Adam. When God created man, (A)he made him in the likeness of God. Male and female he created them, and he blessed them and named them Man[a] when they were created. When Adam had lived 130 years, he fathered a son in his own likeness, after his image, and (B)named him Seth. (C)The days of Adam after he fathered Seth were 800 years; and he had other sons and daughters. Thus all the days that Adam lived were 930 years, (D)and he died.

When Seth had lived 105 years, (E)he fathered Enosh. Seth lived after he fathered Enosh 807 years and had other sons and daughters. Thus all the days of Seth were 912 years, and he died.

When Enosh had lived 90 years, he fathered Kenan. 10 Enosh lived after he fathered Kenan 815 years and had other sons and daughters. 11 Thus all the days of Enosh were 905 years, and he died.

12 When Kenan had lived 70 years, he fathered Mahalalel. 13 Kenan lived after he fathered Mahalalel 840 years and had other sons and daughters. 14 Thus all the days of Kenan were 910 years, and he died.

15 When Mahalalel had lived 65 years, he fathered Jared. 16 Mahalalel lived after he fathered Jared 830 years and had other sons and daughters. 17 Thus all the days of Mahalalel were 895 years, and he died.

18 When Jared had lived 162 years, he fathered (F)Enoch. 19 Jared lived after he fathered Enoch 800 years and had other sons and daughters. 20 Thus all the days of Jared were 962 years, and he died.

21 When Enoch had lived 65 years, he fathered Methuselah. 22 Enoch (G)walked with God[b] after he fathered Methuselah 300 years and had other sons and daughters. 23 Thus all the days of Enoch were 365 years. 24 Enoch (H)walked with God, and he was not,[c] (I)for God took him.

25 When Methuselah had lived 187 years, he fathered Lamech. 26 Methuselah lived after he fathered Lamech 782 years and had other sons and daughters. 27 Thus all the days of Methuselah were 969 years, and he died.

28 When Lamech had lived 182 years, he fathered a son 29 and called his name Noah, saying, “Out of the ground (J)that the Lord has cursed, this one shall bring us relief[d] from our work and from the painful toil of our hands.” 30 Lamech lived after he fathered Noah 595 years and had other sons and daughters. 31 Thus all the days of Lamech were 777 years, and he died.

32 After Noah was 500 years old, Noah fathered (K)Shem, Ham, and (L)Japheth.

11 Israel has sinned; they have (A)transgressed my covenant that I commanded them; they have taken some of the (B)devoted things; they have stolen and lied and put them among their own belongings. 12 (C)Therefore the people of Israel cannot stand before their enemies. They (D)turn their backs before their enemies, because they have become (E)devoted for destruction.[a] I will be with you no more, unless you destroy (F)the devoted things from among you. 13 Get up! Consecrate the people and say, (G)‘Consecrate yourselves for tomorrow; for thus says the Lord, God of Israel, “There are devoted things in your midst, O Israel. You cannot stand before your enemies until you take away the devoted things from among you.” 14 In the morning therefore you shall be brought near (H)by your tribes. And the tribe that the Lord takes by lot shall come near by clans. And the clan that the Lord takes shall come near by households. And the household that the Lord takes shall come near man by man. 15 (I)And he who is taken with the devoted things shall be burned with fire, he and all that he has, because he has (J)transgressed the covenant of the Lord, and because he has done (K)an outrageous thing in Israel.’”

16 So Joshua rose early in the morning and brought Israel near tribe by tribe, and the tribe of Judah was taken. 17 And he brought near the clans of Judah, and the clan of the (L)Zerahites was taken. And he brought near the clan of the Zerahites man by man, and Zabdi was taken. 18 And he brought near his household man by man, and Achan the son of Carmi, son of Zabdi, son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, was taken. 19 Then Joshua said to Achan, “My son, (M)give glory to the Lord God of Israel and (N)give praise[b] to him. And (O)tell me now what you have done; do not hide it from me.” 20 And Achan answered Joshua, “Truly (P)I have sinned against the Lord God of Israel, and this is what I did: 21 when I saw among the spoil a beautiful cloak from Shinar, and 200 shekels of silver, and a bar of gold weighing 50 shekels,[c] then I coveted them and took them. And see, they are hidden in the earth inside my tent, with the silver underneath.”

22 So Joshua sent messengers, and they ran to the tent; and behold, it was hidden in his tent with the silver underneath. 23 And they took them out of the tent and brought them to Joshua and to all the people of Israel. And they laid them down before the Lord. 24 And Joshua and all Israel with him took Achan the son of Zerah, and the silver and the cloak and the bar of gold, and his sons and daughters and his oxen and donkeys and sheep and his tent and all that he had. And they brought them up to the (Q)Valley of Achor. 25 And Joshua said, “Why did you (R)bring trouble on us? The Lord brings trouble on you today.” And all Israel (S)stoned him with stones. (T)They burned them with fire and stoned them with stones. 26 And they raised over him (U)a great heap of stones that remains to this day. Then (V)the Lord turned from his burning anger. Therefore, to this day the name of that place is called the Valley of Achor.[d]

24 Therefore, (A)as the tongue of fire devours the stubble,
    and as dry grass sinks down in the flame,
so (B)their root will be (C)as rottenness,
    and their blossom go up like dust;
for they have (D)rejected the law of the Lord of hosts,
    and have (E)despised the word of the Holy One of Israel.
25 Therefore (F)the anger of the Lord was kindled against his people,
    and he stretched out his hand against them and struck them,
    and (G)the mountains quaked;
and their corpses were (H)as refuse
    in the midst of the streets.
(I)For all this his anger has not turned away,
    and his hand is stretched out still.

26 He will (J)raise a signal for nations far away,
    and (K)whistle for them (L)from the ends of the earth;
and behold, quickly, speedily they come!
27 (M)None is weary, none stumbles,
    none slumbers or sleeps,
not a waistband is loose,
    not a sandal strap broken;
28 (N)their arrows are sharp,
    all their bows bent,
their horses' hoofs seem like flint,
    and their wheels (O)like the whirlwind.
29 Their roaring is like a lion,
    like young lions they roar;
they growl and (P)seize their prey;
    they carry it off, and none can rescue.
30 They will growl over it on that day,
    like the growling of the sea.
And if one looks to the land,
    behold, (Q)darkness and distress;
and the light is darkened by its clouds.

Isaiah's Vision of the Lord

In the year that (R)King Uzziah died I (S)saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up; and the train[a] of his robe filled the temple. Above him stood the seraphim. Each had (T)six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. And one called to another and said:

(U)“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts;
(V)the whole earth is full of his glory!”[b]

And (W)the foundations of the thresholds shook at the voice of him who called, and (X)the house was filled with smoke. And I said: “Woe is me! (Y)For I am lost; (Z)for I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the (AA)King, the Lord of hosts!”

Then one of the seraphim flew to me, having in his hand a burning coal that he had taken with tongs from the altar. And he (AB)touched my mouth and said: “Behold, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away, and your sin atoned for.”

Isaiah's Commission from the Lord

And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for (AC)us?” Then I said, “Here I am! Send me.” And he said, “Go, and say to this people:

(AD)“‘Keep on hearing,[c] but do not understand;
keep on seeing,[d] but do not perceive.’
10 (AE)Make the heart of this people (AF)dull,[e]
    and their ears heavy,
    and blind their eyes;
(AG)lest they see with their eyes,
    and hear with their ears,
and understand with their hearts,
    and turn and be healed.”
11 Then I said, (AH)“How long, O Lord?”
And he said:
“Until (AI)cities lie waste
    without inhabitant,
and houses without people,
    and the land is a desolate waste,
12 and the Lord removes people far away,
    and the forsaken places are many in the midst of the land.
13 (AJ)And though a tenth remain in it,
    it will be burned[f] again,
like a terebinth or an oak,
    whose stump (AK)remains
    when it is felled.”
(AL)The holy seed[g] is its stump.

12 He (A)frustrates the devices of the crafty,
    so that their hands achieve no success.
13 He (B)catches the wise in their own craftiness,
    and the schemes of the wily are brought to a quick end.
14 They meet with darkness in the daytime
    and (C)grope at noonday as in the night.
15 But he (D)saves the needy from the sword of their mouth
    and from the hand of the mighty.
16 So the poor have hope,
    and (E)injustice shuts her mouth.

17 “Behold, (F)blessed is the one whom God reproves;
    therefore (G)despise not the discipline of the (H)Almighty.
18 For he wounds, but he (I)binds up;
    he (J)shatters, but his hands heal.
19 He will (K)deliver you from six troubles;
    in seven no (L)evil[a] shall touch you.
20 (M)In famine he will redeem you from death,
    and in war from the power of the sword.
21 You shall be (N)hidden from the lash of the tongue,
    and shall not fear destruction when it comes.
22 At destruction and famine you shall laugh,
    and shall not fear (O)the beasts of the earth.
23 For you shall be in league with the stones of the field,
    and the beasts of the field shall be at peace with you.
24 You shall know that your (P)tent is at peace,
    and you shall inspect your fold and miss nothing.
25 You shall know also that your (Q)offspring shall be many,
    and your descendants as (R)the grass of the earth.
26 You shall come to your grave in (S)ripe old age,
    like a sheaf gathered up in its season.
27 Behold, this we have (T)searched out; it is true.
    Hear, and know it for your good.”[b]

The Temptation of Jesus

(A)Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness (B)to be tempted by the devil. And after fasting (C)forty days and forty nights, he (D)was hungry. And (E)the tempter came and said to him, “If you are (F)the Son of God, command (G)these stones to become loaves of bread.” But he answered, (H)“It is written,

(I)“‘Man shall not live by bread alone,
    but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

(J)Then the devil took him to (K)the holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written,

(L)“‘He will command his angels concerning you,’

and

“‘On their hands they will bear you up,
    lest you strike your foot against a stone.’”

Jesus said to him, “Again (M)it is written, (N)‘You shall not (O)put the Lord your God to the test.’” (P)Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. And he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” 10 Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, (Q)Satan! For (R)it is written,

(S)“‘You shall worship the Lord your God
    and (T)him only shall you serve.’”

11 Then the devil left him, and behold, (U)angels came and were ministering to him.

Jesus Begins His Ministry

12 Now when he heard that (V)John had been arrested, (W)he withdrew into Galilee. 13 And leaving (X)Nazareth he went and lived in (Y)Capernaum by (Z)the sea, in the territory of (AA)Zebulun and Naphtali, 14 (AB)so that what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled:

15 (AC)“The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali,
    the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles—
16 (AD)the people dwelling in darkness
    have seen a great light,
and for those dwelling in the region and (AE)shadow of death,
    on them a light has dawned.”

17 (AF)From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, (AG)“Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”[a]

The Lame Beggar Healed

Now Peter and John were (A)going up to the temple at (B)the hour of prayer, (C)the ninth hour.[a] And a man (D)lame from birth was being carried, (E)whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple that is called the Beautiful Gate (F)to ask alms of those entering the temple. Seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple, he asked to receive alms. And Peter directed his gaze at him, as did John, and said, “Look at us.” And he fixed his attention on them, expecting to receive something from them. But Peter said, (G)“I have no silver and gold, but what I do have I give to you. (H)In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk!” And he took him by the right hand and raised him up, and immediately his feet and ankles were made strong. And (I)leaping up, he stood and began to walk, and entered the temple with them, walking and leaping and praising God. And (J)all the people saw him walking and praising God, 10 and recognized him as the one who sat at the Beautiful Gate of the temple, asking for alms. And they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him.
