²¹ They said to one another, “Alas, we are paying the penalty for what we did to our brother; we saw his anguish when he pleaded with us, but we would not listen. That is why this anguish has come upon us.”^(A)

²³ So when Joseph came to his brothers, they stripped him of his robe, the ornamented robe^[a] that he wore, ²⁴ and they took him and threw him into a pit. The pit was empty; there was no water in it.

²⁵ Then they sat down to eat, and looking up they saw a caravan of Ishmaelites coming from Gilead, with their camels carrying gum, balm, and resin, on their way to carry it down to Egypt.^{(A) 26} Then Judah said to his brothers, “What profit is it if we kill our brother and conceal his blood?^{(B) 27} Come, let us sell him to the Ishmaelites and not lay our hands on him, for he is our brother, our own flesh.” And his brothers agreed.^{(C) 28} When some Midianite traders passed by, they drew Joseph up, lifting him out of the pit, and sold him to the Ishmaelites for twenty pieces of silver. And they took Joseph to Egypt.^(D)

⁹ If we confess our sins, he who is faithful and just will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.^(A)

¹³ For judgment will be without mercy to anyone who has shown no mercy; mercy triumphs over judgment.^(A)

¹⁸ Also many of those who became believers confessed and disclosed their practices.

²⁸ for I have five brothers—that he may warn them, so that they will not also come into this place of torment.’

⁴⁸ where their worm never dies and the fire is never quenched.^(A)

⁴³ If your hand causes you to sin,^[a] cut it off; it is better for you to enter life maimed than to have two hands and to go to hell,^[b] to the unquenchable fire.^{[c](A) 45} And if your foot causes you to sin,^[d] cut it off; it is better for you to enter life lame than to have two feet and to be thrown into hell.^[e][f](B)
