¹⁸ On the third day, Joseph said to them, “Do this and you will live, for I fear God:^(A)

⁴³ Do not rule over them ruthlessly,^(A) but fear your God.^(B)

¹⁵ But the earlier governors—those preceding me—placed a heavy burden on the people and took forty shekels^[a] of silver from them in addition to food and wine. Their assistants also lorded it over the people. But out of reverence for God^(A) I did not act like that.

² He said: “In a certain town there was a judge who neither feared God nor cared what people thought.

¹¹ Abraham replied, “I said to myself, ‘There is surely no fear of God^(A) in this place, and they will kill me because of my wife.’^(B)

⁴ “For some time he refused. But finally he said to himself, ‘Even though I don’t fear God or care what people think,

⁹ So I continued, “What you are doing is not right. Shouldn’t you walk in the fear of our God to avoid the reproach^(A) of our Gentile enemies?
