² These are the generations of Jacob.

Joseph, being seventeen years old, was pasturing the flock with his brothers. He was a boy with the sons of Bilhah and Zilpah, his father's wives. And Joseph brought ^(A)a bad report of them to their father.

²⁵ The sons of Bilhah, Rachel's servant: Dan and Naphtali. ²⁶ The sons of Zilpah, Leah's servant: Gad and Asher. These were the sons of Jacob who were born to him in Paddan-aram.

¹⁸ For, in the first place, when you come together as a church, ^(A)I hear that there are divisions among you. And I believe it in part,^[a]

Eli Rebukes His Sons

²² Now Eli was very old, and he kept hearing all that his sons were doing to all Israel, and how they lay with the women who ^(A)were serving at the entrance to the tent of meeting. ²³ And he said to them, “Why do you do such things? For I hear of your evil dealings from all these people. ²⁴ No, my sons; it is no good report that I hear the people of the Lord spreading abroad.

²² While Israel lived in that land, Reuben went and ^(A)lay with Bilhah his father's concubine. And Israel heard of it.

Now the sons of Jacob were twelve.

Sexual Immorality Defiles the Church

5 It is actually reported that there is ^(A)sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that is not tolerated even among pagans, ^(B)for a man has his father's wife.

¹¹ For it has been reported to me by Chloe's people that there is ^(A)quarreling among you, my brothers.

⁷ The world cannot hate you, but ^(A)it hates me because I testify about it that ^(B)its works are evil.

⁹ When Leah saw that she had ceased bearing children, she took her servant Zilpah and ^(A)gave her to Jacob as a wife.

⁴ So she gave him her servant Bilhah as a wife, and Jacob went in to her.
