22 And it happened, when Israel dwelt in that land, that Reuben went and (A)lay with Bilhah his father’s concubine; and Israel heard about it.

Jacob’s Twelve Sons

Now the sons of Jacob were twelve: 23 the sons of Leah were (B)Reuben, Jacob’s firstborn, and Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun; 24 the sons of Rachel were Joseph and Benjamin; 25 the sons of Bilhah, Rachel’s maidservant, were Dan and Naphtali; 26 and the sons of Zilpah, Leah’s maidservant, were Gad and Asher. These were the sons of Jacob who were born to him in Padan Aram.

21 Then Jacob said to Laban, “Give me my wife, for my days are fulfilled, that I may (A)go in to her.” 22 And Laban gathered together all the men of the place and (B)made a feast. 23 Now it came to pass in the evening, that he took Leah his daughter and brought her to Jacob; and he went in to her. 24 And Laban gave his maid (C)Zilpah to his daughter Leah as a maid. 25 So it came to pass in the morning, that behold, it was Leah. And he said to Laban, “What is this you have done to me? Was it not for Rachel that I served you? Why then have you (D)deceived me?”

26 And Laban said, “It must not be done so in our [a]country, to give the younger before the firstborn. 27 (E)Fulfill her week, and we will give you this one also for the service which you will serve with me still another seven years.”

28 Then Jacob did so and fulfilled her week. So he gave him his daughter Rachel as wife also. 29 And Laban gave his maid (F)Bilhah to his daughter Rachel as a maid. 30 Then Jacob also went in to Rachel, and he also (G)loved Rachel more than Leah. And he served with Laban (H)still another seven years.

The Children of Jacob

31 When the Lord (I)saw that Leah was [b]unloved, He (J)opened her womb; but Rachel was barren. 32 So Leah conceived and bore a son, and she called his name [c]Reuben; for she said, “The Lord has surely (K)looked on my affliction. Now therefore, my husband will love me.” 33 Then she conceived again and bore a son, and said, “Because the Lord has heard that I am [d]unloved, He has therefore given me this son also.” And she called his name [e]Simeon. 34 She conceived again and bore a son, and said, “Now this time my husband will become attached to me, because I have borne him three sons.” Therefore his name was called [f]Levi. 35 And she conceived again and bore a son, and said, “Now I will praise the Lord.” Therefore she called his name (L)Judah.[g] Then she stopped bearing.

Jacob’s Children

30 Now when Rachel saw that (M)she bore Jacob no children, Rachel (N)envied her sister, and said to Jacob, “Give me children, (O)or else I die!”

And Jacob’s anger was aroused against Rachel, and he said, (P)Am I in the place of God, who has withheld from you the fruit of the womb?”

So she said, “Here is (Q)my maid Bilhah; go in to her, (R)and she will bear a child on my knees, (S)that I also may [h]have children by her.” Then she gave him Bilhah her maid (T)as wife, and Jacob went in to her. And Bilhah conceived and bore Jacob a son. Then Rachel said, “God has (U)judged my case; and He has also heard my voice and given me a son.” Therefore she called his name [i]Dan. And Rachel’s maid Bilhah conceived again and bore Jacob a second son. Then Rachel said, “With [j]great wrestlings I have wrestled with my sister, and indeed I have prevailed.” So she called his name [k]Naphtali.

When Leah saw that she had stopped bearing, she took Zilpah her maid and (V)gave her to Jacob as wife. 10 And Leah’s maid Zilpah bore Jacob a son. 11 Then Leah said, [l]“A troop comes!” So she called his name [m]Gad. 12 And Leah’s maid Zilpah bore Jacob a second son. 13 Then Leah said, “I am happy, for the daughters (W)will call me blessed.” So she called his name [n]Asher.

14 Now Reuben went in the days of wheat harvest and found mandrakes in the field, and brought them to his mother Leah. Then Rachel said to Leah, (X)“Please give me some of your son’s mandrakes.”

15 But she said to her, (Y)Is it a small matter that you have taken away my husband? Would you take away my son’s mandrakes also?”

And Rachel said, “Therefore he will lie with you tonight for your son’s mandrakes.”

16 When Jacob came out of the field in the evening, Leah went out to meet him and said, “You must come in to me, for I have surely hired you with my son’s mandrakes.” And he lay with her that night.

17 And God listened to Leah, and she conceived and bore Jacob a fifth son. 18 Leah said, “God has given me my wages, because I have given my maid to my husband.” So she called his name [o]Issachar. 19 Then Leah conceived again and bore Jacob a sixth son. 20 And Leah said, “God has endowed me with a good endowment; now my husband will dwell with me, because I have borne him six sons.” So she called his name [p]Zebulun. 21 Afterward she bore a (Z)daughter, and called her name [q]Dinah.

22 Then God (AA)remembered Rachel, and God listened to her and (AB)opened her womb. 23 And she conceived and bore a son, and said, “God has taken away (AC)my reproach.” 24 So she called his name [r]Joseph, and said, (AD)“The Lord shall add to me another son.”
