³¹ In the morning they rose early and ^(A)exchanged oaths. And Isaac sent them on their way, and they departed from him in peace.

¹⁶ For people swear by something greater than themselves, and in all their disputes ^(A)an oath is final for confirmation.

¹⁵ And David said to him, “Will you take me down to this band?” And he said, “Swear to me by God that you will not kill me or deliver me into the hands of my master, and I will take you down to this ^(A)band.”

¹⁶ And Jonathan made a covenant with the house of David, saying, ^(A)“May^[a] the Lord take vengeance on David's enemies.” ¹⁷ And Jonathan made David swear again by his love for him, ^(B)for he loved him as he loved his own soul.

⁴⁴ Come now, ^(A)let us make a covenant, you and I. ^(B)And let it be a witness between you and me.”

³³ Jacob said, “Swear to me now.” So he swore to him and ^(A)sold his birthright to Jacob.

³¹ Therefore ^(A)that place was called Beersheba,^[a] because there both of them swore an oath. ³² So they made a covenant at Beersheba. Then Abimelech and Phicol the commander of his army rose up and returned to the land of the Philistines.

³ But David vowed again, saying, “Your father knows well that ^(A)I have found favor in your eyes, and he thinks, ‘Do not let Jonathan know this, lest he be grieved.’ But truly, ^(B)as the Lord lives and ^(C)as your soul lives, there is but a step between me and death.”

Saul's Rash Vow

²⁴ And the men of Israel had been hard pressed that day, ^(A)so Saul had laid an oath on the people, saying, “Cursed be the man who eats food until it is evening and I am avenged on my enemies.” So none of the people had tasted food.

^55 [a] Early in the morning Laban arose and kissed ^(A)his grandchildren and his daughters and blessed them. Then Laban departed and returned home.
