² The Lord appeared^(A) to Isaac and said, “Do not go down to Egypt;^(B) live in the land where I tell you to live.^{(C) 3} Stay in this land for a while,^(D) and I will be with you^(E) and will bless you.^(F) For to you and your descendants I will give all these lands^(G) and will confirm the oath I swore to your father Abraham.^{(H) 4} I will make your descendants^(I) as numerous as the stars in the sky^(J) and will give them all these lands,^(K) and through your offspring^[a] all nations on earth will be blessed,^[b](L)

¹⁶ In the fourth generation^(A) your descendants will come back here,^(B) for the sin of the Amorites^(C) has not yet reached its full measure.”

¹⁷ When the sun had set and darkness had fallen, a smoking firepot with a blazing torch^(D) appeared and passed between the pieces.^{(E) 18} On that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram^(F) and said, “To your descendants I give this land,^(G) from the Wadi^[a] of Egypt^(H) to the great river, the Euphrates^(I)— ¹⁹ the land of the Kenites,^(J) Kenizzites, Kadmonites, ²⁰ Hittites,^(K) Perizzites,^(L) Rephaites,^{(M) 21} Amorites, Canaanites, Girgashites and Jebusites.”^(N)

⁶ I will make you very fruitful;^(A) I will make nations of you, and kings will come from you.^{(B) 7} I will establish my covenant^(C) as an everlasting covenant^(D) between me and you and your descendants after you for the generations to come, to be your God^(E) and the God of your descendants after you.^{(F) 8} The whole land of Canaan,^(G) where you now reside as a foreigner,^(H) I will give as an everlasting possession to you and your descendants after you;^(I) and I will be their God.^(J)”

⁹ Then God said to Abraham, “As for you, you must keep my covenant,^(K) you and your descendants after you for the generations to come.^(L)

¹⁰ and she said to Abraham, “Get rid of that slave woman^(A) and her son, for that woman’s son will never share in the inheritance with my son Isaac.”^(B)

¹¹ The matter distressed Abraham greatly because it concerned his son.^{(C) 12} But God said to him, “Do not be so distressed about the boy and your slave woman. Listen to whatever Sarah tells you, because it is through Isaac that your offspring^[a] will be reckoned.^{(D) 13} I will make the son of the slave into a nation^(E) also, because he is your offspring.”
