26 Il y eut une famine dans le pays, outre la première famine qui eut lieu du temps d'Abraham; et Isaac alla vers Abimélec, roi des Philistins, à Guérar.
2 L'Éternel lui apparut, et dit: Ne descends pas en Égypte, demeure dans le pays que je te dirai.
3 Séjourne dans ce pays-ci: je serai avec toi, et je te bénirai, car je donnerai toutes ces contrées à toi et à ta postérité, et je tiendrai le serment que j'ai fait à Abraham, ton père.
4 Je multiplierai ta postérité comme les étoiles du ciel; je donnerai à ta postérité toutes ces contrées; et toutes les nations de la terre seront bénies en ta postérité,
5 parce qu'Abraham a obéi à ma voix, et qu'il a observé mes ordres, mes commandements, mes statuts et mes lois.
6 Et Isaac resta à Guérar.
7 Lorsque les gens du lieu faisaient des questions sur sa femme, il disait: C'est ma soeur; car il craignait, en disant ma femme, que les gens du lieu ne le tuassent, parce que Rebecca était belle de figure.
8 Comme son séjour se prolongeait, il arriva qu'Abimélec, roi des Philistins, regardant par la fenêtre, vit Isaac qui plaisantait avec Rebecca, sa femme.
9 Abimélec fit appeler Isaac, et dit: Certainement, c'est ta femme. Comment as-tu pu dire: C'est ma soeur? Isaac lui répondit: J'ai parlé ainsi, de peur de mourir à cause d'elle.
10 Et Abimélec dit: Qu'est-ce que tu nous as fait? Peu s'en est fallu que quelqu'un du peuple n'ait couché avec ta femme, et tu nous aurais rendus coupables.
11 Alors Abimélec fit cette ordonnance pour tout le peuple: Celui qui touchera à cet homme ou à sa femme sera mis à mort.
12 Isaac sema dans ce pays, et il recueillit cette année le centuple; car l'Éternel le bénit.
13 Cet homme devint riche, et il alla s'enrichissant de plus en plus, jusqu'à ce qu'il devint fort riche.
14 Il avait des troupeaux de menu bétail et des troupeaux de gros bétail, et un grand nombre de serviteurs: aussi les Philistins lui portèrent envie.
15 Tous les puits qu'avaient creusés les serviteurs de son père, du temps d'Abraham, son père, les Philistins les comblèrent et les remplirent de poussière.
16 Et Abimélec dit à Isaac: Va-t-en de chez nous, car tu es beaucoup plus puissant que nous.
17 Isaac partit de là, et campa dans la vallée de Guérar, où il s'établit.
18 Isaac creusa de nouveau les puits d'eau qu'on avait creusés du temps d'Abraham, son père, et qu'avaient comblés les Philistins après la mort d'Abraham; et il leur donna les mêmes noms que son père leur avait donnés.
19 Les serviteurs d'Isaac creusèrent encore dans la vallée, et y trouvèrent un puits d'eau vive.
20 Les bergers de Guérar querellèrent les bergers d'Isaac, en disant: L'eau est à nous. Et il donna au puits le nom d'Ések, parce qu'ils s'étaient disputés avec lui.
21 Ses serviteurs creusèrent un autre puits, au sujet duquel on chercha aussi une querelle; et il l'appela Sitna.
22 Il se transporta de là, et creusa un autre puits, pour lequel on ne chercha pas querelle; et il l'appela Rehoboth, car, dit-il, l'Éternel nous a maintenant mis au large, et nous prospérerons dans le pays.
23 Il remonta de là à Beer Schéba.
24 L'Éternel lui apparut dans la nuit, et dit: Je suis le Dieu d'Abraham, ton père; ne crains point, car je suis avec toi; je te bénirai, et je multiplierai ta postérité, à cause d'Abraham, mon serviteur.
25 Il bâtit là un autel, invoqua le nom de l'Éternel, et y dressa sa tente. Et les serviteurs d'Isaac y creusèrent un puits.
26 Abimélec vint de Guérar auprès de lui, avec Ahuzath, son ami, et Picol, chef de son armée.
27 Isaac leur dit: Pourquoi venez-vous vers moi, puisque vous me haïssez et que vous m'avez renvoyé de chez vous?
28 Ils répondirent: Nous voyons que l'Éternel est avec toi. C'est pourquoi nous disons: Qu'il y ait un serment entre nous, entre nous et toi, et que nous fassions alliance avec toi!
29 Jure que tu ne nous feras aucun mal, de même que nous ne t'avons point maltraité, que nous t'avons fait seulement du bien, et que nous t'avons laissé partir en paix. Tu es maintenant béni de l'Éternel.
30 Isaac leur fit un festin, et ils mangèrent et burent.
31 Ils se levèrent de bon matin, et se lièrent l'un à l'autre par un serment. Isaac les laissa partir, et ils le quittèrent en paix.
32 Ce même jour, des serviteurs d'Isaac vinrent lui parler du puits qu'ils creusaient, et lui dirent: Nous avons trouvé de l'eau.
33 Et il l'appela Schiba. C'est pourquoi on a donné à la ville le nom de Beer Schéba, jusqu'à ce jour.
34 Ésaü, âgé de quarante ans, prit pour femmes Judith, fille de Beéri, le Héthien, et Basmath, fille d'Élon, le Héthien.
35 Elles furent un sujet d'amertume pour le coeur d'Isaac et de Rebecca.

God's Promise to Isaac
26 Now there was a famine in the land, besides (A)the former famine that was in the days of Abraham. And Isaac went to Gerar to (B)Abimelech king of the (C)Philistines. 2 And the Lord appeared to him and said, “Do not go down to Egypt; dwell (D)in the land of which I shall tell you. 3 (E)Sojourn in this land, and (F)I will be with you and will bless you, for (G)to you and to your offspring I will give all these lands, and I will establish (H)the oath that I swore to Abraham your father. 4 (I)I will multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven and will give to your offspring all these lands. And (J)in your offspring all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, 5 because (K)Abraham obeyed my voice and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws.”
Isaac and Abimelech
6 So Isaac settled in Gerar. 7 When the men of the place asked him about his wife, (L)he said, “She is my sister,” for (M)he feared to say, “My wife,” thinking, “lest the men of the place should kill me because of Rebekah,” because (N)she was attractive in appearance. 8 When he had been there a long time, Abimelech king of the Philistines looked out of a window and saw Isaac laughing with[a] Rebekah his wife. 9 So Abimelech called Isaac and said, “Behold, she is your wife. How then could you say, ‘She is my sister’?” Isaac said to him, “Because I thought, ‘Lest I die because of her.’” 10 Abimelech said, “What is this you have done to us? One of the people might easily have lain with your wife, and (O)you would have brought guilt upon us.” 11 So Abimelech warned all the people, saying, “Whoever touches this man or his wife shall surely be put to death.”
12 And Isaac sowed in that land and reaped in the same year a hundredfold. The Lord (P)blessed him, 13 and the man became rich, and gained more and more until he became very wealthy. 14 He had possessions of flocks and herds and many servants, so that the Philistines (Q)envied him. 15 (Now the Philistines had stopped and filled with earth all the wells (R)that his father's servants had dug in the days of Abraham his father.) 16 And Abimelech said to Isaac, “Go away from us, for you are much mightier than we.”
17 So Isaac departed from there and encamped in the Valley of Gerar and settled there. 18 And Isaac dug again the wells of water that had been dug in the days of Abraham his father, which the Philistines had stopped after the death of Abraham. And (S)he gave them the names that his father had given them. 19 But when Isaac's servants dug in the valley and found there a well of spring water, 20 the herdsmen of Gerar (T)quarreled with Isaac's herdsmen, saying, “The water is ours.” So he called the name of the well Esek,[b] because they contended with him. 21 Then they dug another well, and they quarreled over that also, so he called its name Sitnah.[c] 22 And he moved from there and dug another well, and they did not quarrel over it. So he called its name Rehoboth,[d] saying, “For now the Lord has made room for us, and we shall be fruitful in the land.”
23 From there he went up to Beersheba. 24 And the Lord appeared to him the same night and said, (U)“I am the God of Abraham your father. (V)Fear not, for (W)I am with you and will bless you and multiply your offspring for my servant Abraham's sake.” 25 So he (X)built an altar there and called upon the name of the Lord and pitched his tent there. And there Isaac's servants dug a well.
26 When Abimelech went to him from Gerar with Ahuzzath his adviser and (Y)Phicol the commander of his army, 27 Isaac said to them, “Why have you come to me, seeing that you hate me and (Z)have sent me away from you?” 28 They said, “We see plainly that the Lord has been with you. So we said, let there be a sworn pact between us, between you and us, and let us make a covenant with you, 29 that you will do us no harm, just as we have not touched you and have done to you nothing but good and have sent you away in peace. (AA)You are now the blessed of the Lord.” 30 So he made them a feast, and they ate and drank. 31 In the morning they rose early and (AB)exchanged oaths. And Isaac sent them on their way, and they departed from him in peace. 32 That same day Isaac's servants came and told him about the well that they had dug and said to him, “We have found water.” 33 He called it Shibah;[e] therefore the name of the city is (AC)Beersheba to this day.
34 When Esau was forty years old, he took (AD)Judith the daughter of Beeri the Hittite to be his wife, and Basemath the daughter of Elon the Hittite, 35 and (AE)they made life bitter[f] for Isaac and Rebekah.

Isaac Lies to Abimelech
26 Once there was a time of hunger in the land. This was besides the time of hunger that happened during Abraham’s life. So Isaac went to the town of Gerar. He went to see Abimelech king of the Philistines. 2 The Lord appeared to Isaac and said, “Don’t go down to Egypt. Live in the land where I tell you to live. 3 Stay in this land, and I will be with you. I will bless you. I will give you and your descendants all these lands. I will keep the agreement I made to Abraham your father. 4 I will give you many descendants. They will be as hard to count as the stars in the sky. And I will give them all these lands. Through your descendants all the nations on the earth will be blessed. 5 I will do this because your father Abraham obeyed me. He did what I said. He obeyed my commands, my teachings and my rules.”
6 So Isaac stayed in Gerar. 7 Isaac’s wife Rebekah was very beautiful. The men of that place asked Isaac about her. Isaac said, “She is my sister.” He was afraid to tell them she was his wife. He thought they might kill him so they could have her.
8 Isaac lived there a long time. One day as Abimelech king of the Philistines looked out his window, he saw Isaac. Isaac was holding his wife Rebekah tenderly. 9 Abimelech called for Isaac and said, “This woman is your wife. Why did you say she was your sister?”
Isaac said to him, “I was afraid you would kill me so you could have her.”
10 Abimelech said, “What have you done to us? One of our men might have had physical relations with your wife. Then we would have been guilty of a great sin.”
11 So Abimelech warned everyone. He said, “Anyone who touches this man or his wife will be put to death.”
Isaac Becomes Rich
12 Isaac planted seed in that land. And that year he gathered a great harvest. The Lord blessed him very much. 13 Isaac became rich. He gathered more wealth until he became a very rich man. 14 He had many slaves and many flocks and herds. The Philistines envied him. 15 So they stopped up all the wells the servants of Isaac’s father Abraham had dug. (They had dug them when Abraham was alive.) The Philistines filled those wells with dirt. 16 And Abimelech said to Isaac, “Leave our country. You have become much more powerful than we are.”
17 So Isaac left that place. He camped in the Valley of Gerar and lived there. 18 Long before this time Abraham had dug many wells. After Abraham died, the Philistines filled them with dirt. So Isaac dug those wells again. He gave them the same names his father had given them. 19 Isaac’s servants dug a well in the valley. From it a spring of water flowed. 20 But the men who herded sheep in Gerar argued with Isaac’s servants. They said, “This water is ours.” So Isaac named that well Argue because they argued with him. 21 Then Isaac’s servants dug another well. The people also argued about it. So Isaac named that well Fight. 22 Isaac moved from there and dug another well. No one argued about this one. So he named that well Room Enough. Isaac said, “Now the Lord has made room for us. We will be successful in this land.”
23 From there Isaac went to Beersheba. 24 The Lord appeared to Isaac that night. The Lord said, “I am the God of your father Abraham. Don’t be afraid because I am with you. I will bless you and give you many descendants. I will do this because of my servant Abraham.” 25 So Isaac built an altar and worshiped the Lord there. He made a camp there, and his servants dug a well.
26 Abimelech came from Gerar to see Isaac. Abimelech brought with him Ahuzzath, who advised him, and Phicol, the commander of his army. 27 Isaac asked them, “Why have you come to see me? You were my enemy. You forced me to leave your country.”
28 They answered, “Now we know that the Lord is with you. We will make a promise to you. And we would like you to make one to us. We would like to make an agreement with you. 29 We did not hurt you. So promise you will not hurt us. And we were good to you, and we sent you away in peace. Now the Lord has blessed you.”
30 So Isaac prepared food for them, and they all ate and drank. 31 Early the next morning the men made a promise to each other. Then Isaac sent them away, and they left in peace.
32 That day Isaac’s servants came and told him about the well they had dug. They said, “We found water in that well.” 33 So Isaac named it Shibah[a] and that city is still called Beersheba even now.
34 When Esau was 40 years old, he married two Hittite women. One was Judith daughter of Beeri. The other was Basemath daughter of Elon. 35 These women brought much sorrow to Isaac and Rebekah.

13 And the man waxed great, and went forward, and grew until he became very great:
14 For he had possession of flocks, and possession of herds, and great store of servants: and the Philistines envied him.
15 For all the wells which his father's servants had digged in the days of Abraham his father, the Philistines had stopped them, and filled them with earth.
16 And Abimelech said unto Isaac, Go from us; for thou art much mightier than we.
17 And Isaac departed thence, and pitched his tent in the valley of Gerar, and dwelt there.
18 And Isaac digged again the wells of water, which they had digged in the days of Abraham his father; for the Philistines had stopped them after the death of Abraham: and he called their names after the names by which his father had called them.

28 And they said, We saw certainly that the Lord was with thee: and we said, Let there be now an oath betwixt us, even betwixt us and thee, and let us make a covenant with thee;
29 That thou wilt do us no hurt, as we have not touched thee, and as we have done unto thee nothing but good, and have sent thee away in peace: thou art now the blessed of the Lord.
30 And he made them a feast, and they did eat and drink.
31 And they rose up betimes in the morning, and sware one to another: and Isaac sent them away, and they departed from him in peace.
32 And it came to pass the same day, that Isaac's servants came, and told him concerning the well which they had digged, and said unto him, We have found water.
33 And he called it Shebah: therefore the name of the city is Beersheba unto this day.
34 And Esau was forty years old when he took to wife Judith the daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Bashemath the daughter of Elon the Hittite:
35 Which were a grief of mind unto Isaac and to Rebekah.
