15 Après ces événements, la parole de l'Éternel fut adressée à Abram dans une vision, et il dit: Abram, ne crains point; je suis ton bouclier, et ta récompense sera très grande.
2 Abram répondit: Seigneur Éternel, que me donneras-tu? Je m'en vais sans enfants; et l'héritier de ma maison, c'est Éliézer de Damas.
3 Et Abram dit: Voici, tu ne m'as pas donné de postérité, et celui qui est né dans ma maison sera mon héritier.
4 Alors la parole de l'Éternel lui fut adressée ainsi: Ce n'est pas lui qui sera ton héritier, mais c'est celui qui sortira de tes entrailles qui sera ton héritier.
5 Et après l'avoir conduit dehors, il dit: Regarde vers le ciel, et compte les étoiles, si tu peux les compter. Et il lui dit: Telle sera ta postérité.
6 Abram eut confiance en l'Éternel, qui le lui imputa à justice.
7 L'Éternel lui dit encore: Je suis l'Éternel, qui t'ai fait sortir d'Ur en Chaldée, pour te donner en possession ce pays.
8 Abram répondit: Seigneur Éternel, à quoi connaîtrai-je que je le posséderai?
9 Et l'Éternel lui dit: Prends une génisse de trois ans, une chèvre de trois ans, un bélier de trois ans, une tourterelle et une jeune colombe.
10 Abram prit tous ces animaux, les coupa par le milieu, et mit chaque morceau l'un vis-à-vis de l'autre; mais il ne partagea point les oiseaux.
11 Les oiseaux de proie s'abattirent sur les cadavres; et Abram les chassa.
12 Au coucher du soleil, un profond sommeil tomba sur Abram; et voici, une frayeur et une grande obscurité vinrent l'assaillir.
13 Et l'Éternel dit à Abram: Sache que tes descendants seront étrangers dans un pays qui ne sera point à eux; ils y seront asservis, et on les opprimera pendant quatre cents ans.
14 Mais je jugerai la nation à laquelle ils seront asservis, et ils sortiront ensuite avec de grandes richesses.
15 Toi, tu iras en paix vers tes pères, tu seras enterré après une heureuse vieillesse.
16 A la quatrième génération, ils reviendront ici; car l'iniquité des Amoréens n'est pas encore à son comble.
17 Quand le soleil fut couché, il y eut une obscurité profonde; et voici, ce fut une fournaise fumante, et des flammes passèrent entre les animaux partagés.
18 En ce jour-là, l'Éternel fit alliance avec Abram, et dit: Je donne ce pays à ta postérité, depuis le fleuve d'Égypte jusqu'au grand fleuve, au fleuve d'Euphrate,
19 le pays des Kéniens, des Keniziens, des Kadmoniens,
20 des Héthiens, des Phéréziens, des Rephaïm,
21 des Amoréens, des Cananéens, des Guirgasiens et des Jébusiens.

The Abrahamic Covenant
15 After this the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision, saying,
“Do not fear, Abram.
I am your shield,
your exceedingly great reward.[a]”
2 But Abram said, “Lord God, what will You give me, seeing I am childless and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?” 3 Abram said, “Since You have not given me any children, my heir is a servant born in my house.”
4 Then the word of the Lord came to him, saying, “This man will not be your heir, but a son that is from your own body will be your heir.” 5 He brought him outside and said, “Look up toward heaven and count the stars, if you are able to count them.” And He said to him, “So will your descendants be.”
6 Abram believed the Lord, and He credited it to him as righteousness.
7 He also said to him, “I am the Lord who brought you out of Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land to possess[b] it.”
8 But Abram said, “Lord God, how may I know that I will possess it?”
9 So He said to him, “Bring Me a three-year-old heifer, a three-year-old female goat, a three-year-old ram, a turtledove, and a young pigeon.”
10 Then Abram brought all of these to Him and cut them in two and laid each piece opposite the other, but he did not cut the birds in half. 11 When the birds of prey came down on the carcasses, Abram drove them away.
12 As the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell on Abram, and terror and a great darkness fell on him. 13 Then He said to Abram, “Know for certain that your descendants will live as strangers in a land that is not theirs, and they will be enslaved and mistreated for four hundred years. 14 But I will judge the nation that they serve, and afterward they will come out with great possessions. 15 As for you, you will go to your fathers in peace and you will be buried at a good old age. 16 In the fourth generation, your descendants will return here, for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet complete.”
17 When the sun went down and it was dark, a smoking fire pot with a flaming torch passed between these pieces. 18 On that same day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying, “To your descendants I have given this land, from the river of Egypt to the great Euphrates River— 19 the land of the Kenites, the Kenizzites, the Kadmonites, 20 the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Rephaites, 21 the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Girgashites, and the Jebusites.”

The Lord’s Covenant With Abram
15 After this, the word of the Lord came to Abram(A) in a vision:(B)
2 But Abram said, “Sovereign Lord,(F) what can you give me since I remain childless(G) and the one who will inherit[c] my estate is Eliezer of Damascus?(H)” 3 And Abram said, “You have given me no children; so a servant(I) in my household(J) will be my heir.”
4 Then the word of the Lord came to him: “This man will not be your heir, but a son who is your own flesh and blood will be your heir.(K)” 5 He took him outside and said, “Look up at the sky and count the stars(L)—if indeed you can count them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your offspring[d] be.”(M)
6 Abram believed the Lord, and he credited it to him as righteousness.(N)
7 He also said to him, “I am the Lord, who brought you out(O) of Ur of the Chaldeans(P) to give you this land to take possession of it.”(Q)
8 But Abram said, “Sovereign Lord,(R) how can I know(S) that I will gain possession of it?”(T)
9 So the Lord said to him, “Bring me a heifer,(U) a goat and a ram, each three years old,(V) along with a dove and a young pigeon.(W)”
10 Abram brought all these to him, cut them in two and arranged the halves opposite each other;(X) the birds, however, he did not cut in half.(Y) 11 Then birds of prey came down on the carcasses,(Z) but Abram drove them away.
12 As the sun was setting, Abram fell into a deep sleep,(AA) and a thick and dreadful darkness came over him. 13 Then the Lord said to him, “Know for certain that for four hundred years(AB) your descendants will be strangers in a country not their own and that they will be enslaved(AC) and mistreated there. 14 But I will punish the nation they serve as slaves, and afterward they will come out(AD) with great possessions.(AE) 15 You, however, will go to your ancestors(AF) in peace and be buried at a good old age.(AG) 16 In the fourth generation(AH) your descendants will come back here,(AI) for the sin of the Amorites(AJ) has not yet reached its full measure.”
17 When the sun had set and darkness had fallen, a smoking firepot with a blazing torch(AK) appeared and passed between the pieces.(AL) 18 On that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram(AM) and said, “To your descendants I give this land,(AN) from the Wadi[e] of Egypt(AO) to the great river, the Euphrates(AP)— 19 the land of the Kenites,(AQ) Kenizzites, Kadmonites, 20 Hittites,(AR) Perizzites,(AS) Rephaites,(AT) 21 Amorites, Canaanites, Girgashites and Jebusites.”(AU)

15 After these things the word of the Lord came to Abram (B)in a vision, saying, (C)“Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your (D)shield, [a]your exceedingly (E)great reward.”
2 (F)But Abram said, “Lord God, what will You give me, (G)seeing I [b]go childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?” 3 Then Abram said, “Look, You have given me no offspring; indeed (H)one[c] born in my house is my heir!”
4 And behold, the word of the Lord came to him, saying, “This one shall not be your heir, but one who (I)will come from your own body shall be your heir.” 5 Then He brought him outside and said, “Look now toward heaven, and (J)count the (K)stars if you are able to number them.” And He said to him, (L)“So shall your (M)descendants be.”
6 And he (N)believed in the Lord, and He (O)accounted it to him for righteousness.

17 And it came to pass, when the sun went down and it was dark, that behold, there appeared a smoking oven and a burning torch that (AG)passed between those pieces. 18 On the same day the Lord (AH)made a covenant with Abram, saying:
(AI)“To your descendants I have given this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the River Euphrates— 19 the Kenites, the Kenezzites, the Kadmonites, 20 the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Rephaim, 21 the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Girgashites, and the Jebusites.”

15 Sau các việc ấy CHÚA phán với Áp-ram trong một sự hiện thấy, “Áp-ram ơi, đừng sợ. Ta sẽ bảo vệ con, ta sẽ cho con phần thưởng lớn.”
2 Nhưng Áp-ram thưa, “Lạy CHÚA là Thượng Đế, CHÚA sẽ ban gì cho con? Con không có con trai, nên sau khi con qua đời thì Ê-li-ê-xe, người nô lệ từ Đa-mách sẽ hưởng hết tài sản của con.” 3 Áp-ram tiếp, “CHÚA xem, Ngài không cho con đứa con trai nào, nên kẻ nô lệ được sinh trong nhà con sẽ hưởng tài sản của con.”
4 Nhưng CHÚA phán cùng Áp-ram rằng, “Kẻ nô lệ đó không phải là người thừa hưởng tài sản con đâu. Con sẽ có một con trai ruột, là người sẽ hưởng tài sản con.”
5 Rồi Thượng Đế dẫn Áp-ram ra ngoài và bảo, “Hãy ngước nhìn bầu trời! Các ngôi sao nhiều vô số không thể đếm nổi. Con cháu con cũng đông như vậy.”
6 Áp-ram tin CHÚA. Ngài chấp nhận ông. Đức tin ấy khiến ông trở nên công chính trước mặt CHÚA. 7 CHÚA bảo Áp-ram, “Ta là CHÚA, đã đem con ra khỏi thành U-rơ, xứ Canh-đê, để cấp cho con đất nầy.”
8 Nhưng Áp-ram thưa, “Lạy CHÚA là Thượng Đế, làm sao con biết chắc con sẽ hưởng đất nầy?”
9 CHÚA bảo Áp-ram, “Hãy mang cho ta một con bò cái tơ ba tuổi, một con dê ba tuổi, một con chiên đực ba tuổi, một con cu đất và một con bồ câu con.”
10 Áp-ram mang các súc vật ấy đến cùng Thượng Đế. Ông giết các súc vật, chặt ra làm đôi, đặt mỗi nửa miếng đối diện nhau. Nhưng ông không chặt các con chim ra làm đôi. 11 Sau đó có các con chim lớn đáp xuống định ăn thịt các súc vật ấy, nhưng Áp-ram đuổi chúng đi.
12 Khi mặt trời lặn, thì Áp-ram ngủ mê. Trong khi ông đang ngủ, một bóng tối kinh khiếp ập đến. 13 CHÚA phán cùng Áp-ram rằng, “Con có thể biết chắc rằng, con cháu con sẽ phải đi qua xứ khác, làm người nước ngoài. Tại đó dân bản xứ sẽ bắt chúng nó làm nô lệ trong bốn trăm năm. 14 Nhưng ta sẽ phạt dân tộc đã bắt chúng làm nô lệ. Con cháu con sẽ ra khỏi xứ ấy, mang theo nhiều tài sản.
15 Phần con, Áp-ram, con sẽ qua đời bình yên và được chôn cất lúc cao tuổi. 16 Sau khi cháu chít con ra đời, chúng nó sẽ về lại xứ nầy. Phải cần thời gian lâu như thế vì ta chưa sẵn sàng trừng phạt tội ác dân A-mô-rít.”
17 Sau khi mặt trời lặn thì trời tối sầm lại. Bỗng nhiên có một nồi lửa bốc khói [a] và một cây đuốc cháy sáng đi qua lại giữa các phần thịt đã chặt của các súc vật [b] dâng lễ.
18 Ngày đó CHÚA lập giao ước với Áp-ram. Ngài nói, “Ta sẽ ban cho dòng dõi con vùng đất nằm giữa sông Ai-cập [c] và sông lớn Ơ-phơ-rát. 19 Đó là đất của dân Kê-nít, dân Kê-ni-xít, dân Cát-mô-nít, 20 dân Hi-tít, dân Phê-ri-sít, dân Rê-pha-ít, 21 dân A-mô-rít, dân Ca-na-an, dân Ghi-rê-sít và dân Giê-bu-sít.”
