Jacob Moves to Egypt
46 So Israel set out with all that he had, and came to (A)Beersheba, and offered sacrifices to the (B)God of his father Isaac. 2 And (C)God spoke to Israel [a]in visions of the night and said, “(D)Jacob, Jacob.” And he said, “Here I am.” 3 Then He said, “(E)I am God, the God of your father; do not be afraid to go down to Egypt, for I will (F)make you into a great nation there. 4 (G)I will go down with you to Egypt, and (H)I will also assuredly bring you up again; and (I)Joseph will [b]close your eyes.”
5 Then Jacob left Beersheba, and the sons of Israel carried their father Jacob and their little ones and their wives in the (J)wagons which Pharaoh had sent to carry him. 6 They also took their livestock and their possessions, which they had acquired in the land of Canaan, and (K)came to Egypt, Jacob and all his [c]descendants with him: 7 his sons and his grandsons with him, his daughters and his granddaughters, and all his [d]descendants he brought with him to Egypt.
Those Who Came to Egypt
8 Now these are the (L)names of the sons of Israel who went to Egypt, Jacob and his sons: Reuben, Jacob’s firstborn. 9 And the sons of Reuben: Hanoch, Pallu, Hezron, and Carmi. 10 And the (M)sons of Simeon: [e]Jemuel, Jamin, Ohad, [f]Jachin, [g]Zohar, and Shaul the son of a Canaanite woman. 11 And the sons of Levi: [h]Gershon, Kohath, and Merari. 12 And the sons of Judah: Er, Onan, Shelah, Perez, and Zerah (but Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan). And the (N)sons of Perez were Hezron and Hamul. 13 And the sons of Issachar: Tola, [i]Puvvah, [j]Iob, and Shimron. 14 And the sons of Zebulun: Sered, Elon, and Jahleel. 15 These are the sons of Leah, whom she bore to Jacob in Paddan-aram, with his daughter Dinah; [k]all his sons and his daughters numbered thirty-three. 16 And the (O)sons of Gad: [l]Ziphion, Haggi, Shuni, [m]Ezbon, Eri, [n]Arodi, and Areli. 17 And the (P)sons of Asher: Imnah, Ishvah, Ishvi, Beriah, and their sister Serah. And the (Q)sons of Beriah: Heber and Malchiel. 18 These are the sons of Zilpah, whom Laban gave to his daughter Leah; and she bore to Jacob these sixteen persons. 19 The sons of Jacob’s wife Rachel: Joseph and Benjamin. 20 (R)Now to Joseph in the land of Egypt were born Manasseh and Ephraim, whom Asenath, the daughter of Potiphera, priest of On, bore to him. 21 And the (S)sons of Benjamin: Bela, Becher, Ashbel, Gera, Naaman, [o]Ehi, Rosh, [p]Muppim, [q]Huppim, and Ard. 22 These are the sons of Rachel, who were born to Jacob; there were fourteen persons in all. 23 And the sons of Dan: [r]Hushim. 24 And the sons of Naphtali: [s]Jahzeel, Guni, Jezer, and [t]Shillem. 25 These are the (T)sons of Bilhah, whom (U)Laban gave to his daughter Rachel, and she bore these to Jacob; there were seven persons in all. 26 (V)All the people belonging to Jacob, who came to Egypt, [u]his direct descendants, not including the wives of Jacob’s sons, were sixty-six persons in all, 27 and the sons of Joseph, who were born to him in Egypt, were [v]two; (W)all the people of the house of Jacob, who came to Egypt, were seventy.
28 Now Jacob sent Judah ahead of him to Joseph, to [w]guide him to (X)Goshen; and they came into the land of Goshen. 29 And Joseph [x]prepared his chariot and went up to Goshen to meet his father Israel; as soon as he appeared to him, Joseph threw himself on his neck and (Y)wept on his neck a long time. 30 Then Israel said to Joseph, “Now let me die, since I have seen your face, that you are still alive.” 31 But Joseph said to his brothers and to his father’s household, “(Z)I will go up and tell Pharaoh, and will say to him, ‘My brothers and my father’s household, who were in the land of Canaan, have come to me; 32 and the men are shepherds, for they have been [y]keepers of livestock; and they have brought their flocks and their herds and all that they have.’ 33 When Pharaoh calls for you and says, ‘(AA)What is your occupation?’ 34 you shall say, ‘Your servants have been [z](AB)keepers of livestock since our youth even until now, both we and our fathers,’ so that you may live in the land of (AC)Goshen; for every shepherd is an (AD)abomination to the Egyptians.”
Jacob’s Family Settles in Goshen
47 Then (AE)Joseph went in and told Pharaoh, and said, “My father and my brothers and their flocks and their herds and all that they have, have come out of the land of Canaan; and behold, they are in the land of (AF)Goshen.” 2 And he took five men from among his brothers and (AG)presented them to Pharaoh. 3 Then Pharaoh said to his brothers, “(AH)What is your occupation?” So they said to Pharaoh, “Your servants are (AI)shepherds, both we and our fathers.” 4 They also said to Pharaoh, “(AJ)We have come to reside in the land, for there is no pasture for your servants’ flocks, for (AK)the famine is severe in the land of Canaan. Now, therefore, please let your servants (AL)live in the land of Goshen.” 5 Then Pharaoh said to [aa]Joseph, “Your father and your brothers have come to you. 6 The land of Egypt is [ab]at your disposal; settle your father and your brothers in (AM)the best of the land, let them live in the land of Goshen; and if you know any (AN)capable men among them, then [ac]put them in charge of my livestock.”
7 Then Joseph brought his father Jacob and [ad]presented him to Pharaoh; and Jacob (AO)blessed Pharaoh. 8 And Pharaoh said to Jacob, “How many [ae]years have you lived?” 9 So Jacob said to Pharaoh, “The [af](AP)years of my living abroad are [ag]130; few and [ah]unpleasant have been the [ai]years of my life, nor have they [aj]attained (AQ)the [ak]years [al]that my fathers lived during the days of their living abroad.” 10 So Jacob (AR)blessed Pharaoh, and went out from [am]his presence. 11 Now Joseph settled his father and his brothers and gave them property in the land of Egypt, in (AS)the best of the land, in the land of (AT)Rameses, as Pharaoh had ordered. 12 Joseph also (AU)provided his father and his brothers and all his father’s household with [an]food, according to the [ao]number of their little ones.
13 Now there was no [ap]food in all the land, because the famine was very severe, so that (AV)the land of Egypt and the land of Canaan languished because of the famine. 14 And (AW)Joseph collected all the money that was found in the land of Egypt and in the land of Canaan in payment for the grain which they bought, and Joseph brought the money into Pharaoh’s house. 15 When the money was all spent in the land of Egypt and in the land of Canaan, all the Egyptians came to Joseph saying, “Give us [aq]food, for (AX)why should we die in your presence? For our money is [ar]gone.” 16 Then Joseph said, “Give up your livestock, and I will give you food for your livestock, since your money is [as]gone.” 17 So they brought their livestock to Joseph, and Joseph gave them [at]food in exchange for the horses and the [au]flocks and the herds and the donkeys; and he [av]fed them with [aw]food in exchange for all their livestock [ax]that year. 18 But when that year ended, they came to him the [ay]next year and said to him, “We will not hide from my lord the fact that our money is all spent, and the [az]livestock are my lord’s. There is nothing left [ba]for my lord except our bodies and our lands. 19 Why should we die before your eyes, both we and our land? Buy us and our land for [bb]food, and we and our land will be slaves to Pharaoh. So give us seed, so that we may live and not die, and that the land may not be desolate.”
Result of the Famine
20 So Joseph bought all the land of Egypt for Pharaoh, for [bc]every Egyptian sold his field, because the famine was severe upon them. So the land became Pharaoh’s. 21 As for the people, he relocated them to the cities from one end of Egypt’s border to the other. 22 Only the land of the priests he did not buy, because the priests had an allotment from Pharaoh, and they [bd]lived off the allotment which Pharaoh gave them. Therefore, they did not sell their land. 23 Then Joseph said to the people, “Behold, today I have purchased you and your land for Pharaoh; now, here is seed for you, and you may sow the land. 24 [be]At the harvest you shall give a (AY)fifth to Pharaoh, and [bf]four-fifths shall be your own for seed of the field and for your food, and for those of your households and as food for your little ones.” 25 So they said, “You have saved our lives! Let us find favor in the sight of my lord, and we will be Pharaoh’s slaves.” 26 Joseph made it a statute concerning the land of Egypt, valid to this day, that Pharaoh was to have the fifth; (AZ)only the land of the priests [bg]did not become Pharaoh’s.
27 Now Israel lived in the land of Egypt, in [bh]Goshen, and they (BA)acquired property in it and (BB)were fruitful and became very numerous. 28 And Jacob lived in the land of Egypt for (BC)seventeen years; so the [bi]length of Jacob’s life was 147 years.
29 When [bj](BD)the time for Israel to die drew near, he called his son Joseph and said to him, “Please, if I have found favor in your sight, (BE)place your hand under my thigh now and (BF)deal with me in kindness and [bk]faithfulness: please do not bury me in Egypt, 30 but when I (BG)[bl]lie down with my fathers, you shall carry me out of Egypt and bury me in (BH)their burial place.” And he said, “I will do as you have said.” 31 And he said, “(BI)Swear to me.” So he swore to him. Then (BJ)Israel bowed in worship at the head of the bed.
Israel’s Last Days
48 Now it came about after these things that [bm]Joseph was told, “Behold, your father is sick.” So he took his two sons (BK)Manasseh and Ephraim with him. 2 When [bn]it was told to Jacob, “Behold, your son Joseph has come to you,” Israel [bo]collected his strength and sat [bp]up in the bed. 3 Then Jacob said to Joseph, “[bq](BL)God Almighty appeared to me at (BM)Luz in the land of Canaan and blessed me, 4 and He said to me, ‘Behold, I will make you fruitful and numerous, and I will make you a multitude of peoples, and will give this land to your [br]descendants after you as (BN)an everlasting possession.’ 5 Now your two sons, who were born to you in the land of Egypt before I came to you in Egypt, are mine; (BO)Ephraim and Manasseh shall be mine, as (BP)Reuben and Simeon are. 6 But your children that you have fathered after them shall be yours; they shall be called by the [bs]names of their brothers in their inheritance. 7 Now as for me, when I came from (BQ)Paddan, (BR)Rachel died, [bt]to my sorrow, in the land of Canaan on the journey, when there was still some distance to go to Ephrath. I buried her there on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem).”
8 When Israel (BS)saw Joseph’s sons, he said, “Who are these?” 9 And Joseph said to his father, “(BT)They are my sons, whom God has given me here.” So he said, “Bring them to me, please, so that (BU)I may bless them.” 10 Now (BV)the eyes of Israel were so [bu]dim from age that he could not see. And [bv]Joseph brought them close to him, and he (BW)kissed them and embraced them. 11 And Israel said to Joseph, “I never [bw]expected to see your face, and behold, God has let me see your [bx]children as well!” 12 Then Joseph [by]took them from his knees, and (BX)bowed with his face to the ground. 13 And Joseph took them both, Ephraim with his right hand toward Israel’s left, and Manasseh with his left hand toward Israel’s right, and brought them close to him. 14 But Israel reached out his right hand and placed it on the head of Ephraim, who was the younger, and his left hand on Manasseh’s head, crossing his hands, although (BY)Manasseh was the firstborn. 15 And he blessed Joseph, and said,
“(BZ)The God before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac walked,
(CA)The God who has been my shepherd [bz]all my life to this day,
16 (CB)The angel who has redeemed me from all evil,
(CC)Bless the boys;
And may my name [ca]live on in them,
And the [cb]names of my fathers Abraham and Isaac;
And (CD)may they grow into a multitude in the midst of the earth.”
17 When Joseph saw that his father (CE)placed his right hand on Ephraim’s head, it displeased him; and he grasped his father’s hand to move it from Ephraim’s head to Manasseh’s head. 18 And Joseph said to his father, “Not so, my father, for this one is the firstborn. Place your right hand on his head.” 19 But his father refused and said, “I know, my son, I know; he also will become a people and he also will be great. However, his younger brother shall be greater than he, and (CF)his [cc]descendants shall become [cd]a multitude of nations.” 20 So (CG)he blessed them that day, saying,
“By you Israel will pronounce blessing, saying,
‘May God make you like Ephraim and Manasseh!’”
And so he put Ephraim before Manasseh. 21 Then Israel said to Joseph, “Behold, I am about to die, but (CH)God will be with you, and (CI)bring you back to the land of your fathers. 22 And I give you one [ce]portion more than your brothers, (CJ)which I took from the hand of the Amorite with my sword and my bow.”
Jacob’s Prophecy concerning His Sons
49 Then Jacob summoned his sons and said, “Assemble yourselves, so that I may tell you what will happen to you (CK)in the [cf]days to come.
2 Gather together and listen, sons of Jacob;
Yes, (CL)listen to Israel your father.
3 “Reuben, you are my firstborn,
My might and (CM)the beginning of my strength,
Preeminent in dignity and preeminent in power.
4 [cg]Uncontrollable as water, you shall not have preeminence,
(CN)Because you went up to your father’s bed;
Then you defiled it—he went up to my couch.
5 “(CO)Simeon and Levi are brothers;
Their [ch]swords are implements of violence.
6 (CP)May my soul not enter into their council;
May my glory not be united with their assembly;
For in their anger they killed [ci]men,
And in their self-will they lamed [cj]oxen.
7 Cursed be their anger, for it is fierce;
And their wrath, for it is cruel.
(CQ)I will scatter them in Jacob,
And disperse them among Israel.
8 “As for you, Judah, your brothers shall praise you;
Your hand shall be on the neck of your enemies;
(CR)Your father’s sons shall bow down to you.
9 Judah is a (CS)lion’s cub;
From the prey, my son, you have gone up.
(CT)He [ck]crouches, he lies down as a lion,
And as a [cl]lion, who [cm]dares to stir him up?
10 (CU)The scepter will not depart from Judah,
Nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet,
[cn]Until Shiloh comes,
And (CV)to him shall be the obedience of the peoples.
11 (CW)He ties his foal to the vine,
And his donkey’s colt to the choice vine;
(CX)He washes his garments in wine,
And his robes in the blood of grapes.
12 His eyes are [co]dull from wine,
And his teeth [cp]white from milk.
13 “(CY)Zebulun will reside at the seashore;
And he shall be [cq]a harbor for ships,
And his flank shall be toward Sidon.
14 “Issachar is a [cr]strong donkey,
(CZ)Lying down between the sheepfolds.
15 When he saw that a resting place was good
And that the land was pleasant,
He bowed his shoulder to carry burdens,
And became a slave at forced labor.
16 “(DA)Dan shall (DB)judge his people,
As one of the tribes of Israel.
17 Dan shall be a serpent in the way,
A horned viper in the path,
That bites the horse’s heels,
So that its rider falls backward.
18 (DC)For Your salvation I wait, Lord.
21 “(DG)Naphtali is a doe let loose;
He utters beautiful words.
22 “(DH)Joseph is a fruitful [cw]branch,
A fruitful [cx]branch by a spring;
Its [cy]branches hang over a wall.
23 The archers provoked him,
And shot at him and were hostile toward him;
24 But his (DI)bow remained [cz]firm,
And [da](DJ)his arms were agile,
From the hands of the (DK)Mighty One of Jacob
(From there is (DL)the Shepherd, (DM)the Stone of Israel),
25 From (DN)the God of your father who helps you,
And [db](DO)by the [dc]Almighty who blesses you
With (DP)blessings of heaven above,
Blessings of the deep that lies beneath,
Blessings of the breasts and of the womb.
26 The blessings of your father
Have surpassed the blessings of my ancestors
Up to the [dd]furthest boundary of (DQ)the everlasting hills;
May they be on the head of Joseph,
And on the top of the head of the one distinguished among his brothers.
27 “Benjamin is a [de]ravenous wolf;
In the morning he devours the prey,
And in the evening he divides the spoils.”
28 All these are the twelve tribes of Israel, and this is what their father said to them [df]when he blessed them. He blessed them, every one [dg]with the blessing appropriate to him.
Jacob Dies
29 Then he commanded them and said to them, “I am about to be (DR)gathered to my people; (DS)bury me with my fathers in the cave that is in (DT)the field of Ephron the Hittite, 30 in the (DU)cave that is in the field of Machpelah, which is opposite Mamre, in the land of Canaan, which Abraham bought along with the field from Ephron the Hittite as a [dh]burial site. 31 There they buried (DV)Abraham and his wife (DW)Sarah, there they buried (DX)Isaac and his wife Rebekah, and there I buried Leah— 32 the field and the cave that is in it, purchased from the sons of Heth.” 33 When Jacob finished commanding his sons, he drew his feet into the bed and (DY)breathed his last, and was (DZ)gathered to his people.
Jacob Is Buried
50 Then Joseph fell on his father’s face, and wept over him and kissed him. 2 Joseph commanded his servants the physicians to embalm his father. So the physicians (EA)embalmed Israel. 3 Now forty days were [di]required for [dj]it, for [dk]such is the period required for embalming. And the Egyptians (EB)wept for him seventy days.
4 When the days of [dl]mourning for him were past, Joseph spoke to the household of Pharaoh, saying, “If now I have found favor in your sight, please speak [dm]to Pharaoh, saying, 5 ‘(EC)My father made me swear, saying, “Behold, I am about to die; in my grave (ED)which I dug for myself in the land of Canaan, there you shall bury me.” Now then, please let me go up and bury my father; then I will return.’” 6 Pharaoh said, “Go up and bury your father, as he made you swear.”
7 So Joseph went up to bury his father, and with him went up all the servants of Pharaoh, the elders of his household and all the elders of the land of Egypt, 8 and all the household of Joseph and his brothers and his father’s household; they left only their little ones and their flocks and their herds in the land of Goshen. 9 Chariots with teams of horses also went up with him; and it was a very great company. 10 When they came to the [dn]threshing floor of Atad, which is beyond the Jordan, they (EE)mourned there with a very great and [do]sorrowful lamentation; and he [dp]observed seven days of mourning for his father. 11 Now when the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, saw the mourning at [dq]the threshing floor of Atad, they said, “This is a [dr]grievous [ds]mourning for the Egyptians.” Therefore it was named [dt]Abel-mizraim, which is beyond the Jordan.
Burial at Machpelah
12 And so his sons did for him as he had commanded them; 13 for his sons carried him to the land of Canaan and buried him in (EF)the cave of the field of Machpelah opposite Mamre, which Abraham had bought along with the field as a [du]burial site from Ephron the Hittite. 14 And after he had buried his father, Joseph returned to Egypt, he and his brothers, and all who had gone up with him to bury his father.
15 When Joseph’s brothers had seen that their father was dead, they said, “(EG)What if Joseph holds a grudge against us and pays us back in full for all the wrong which we did to him!” 16 So they sent instructions to Joseph, saying, “Your father commanded us before he died, saying, 17 ‘This is what you shall say to Joseph: “Please forgive, I beg you, the offense of your brothers and their sin, for they did you wrong.”’ And now, please forgive the offense of the servants of the God of your father.” And Joseph wept when they spoke to him. 18 Then his brothers also came and (EH)fell down before him and said, “Behold, we are your servants.” 19 But Joseph said to them, “Do not be afraid, for am I in God’s place? 20 As for you, (EI)you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good in order to bring about [dv]this present result, to keep many people alive. 21 So therefore, do not be afraid; (EJ)I will provide for you and your little ones.” So he comforted them and spoke [dw]kindly to them.
Death of Joseph
22 Now Joseph stayed in Egypt, he and his father’s household, and Joseph lived 110 years. 23 Joseph saw the third generation of Ephraim’s sons; also the sons of Machir, the son of Manasseh, were (EK)born on Joseph’s knees. 24 Joseph said to his brothers, “(EL)I am about to die, but God will assuredly [dx]take care of you and bring you up from this land to the land which He [dy]promised on oath to (EM)Abraham, to (EN)Isaac, and to (EO)Jacob.” 25 Then Joseph made the sons of Israel swear, saying, “God will assuredly [dz]take care of you, and (EP)you shall carry my bones up from here.” 26 So Joseph died at the age of 110 years; and they (EQ)embalmed him and placed him in a coffin in Egypt.

Jacob Goes to Egypt
46 So Israel(A) set out with all that was his, and when he reached Beersheba,(B) he offered sacrifices(C) to the God of his father Isaac.(D)
2 And God spoke to Israel(E) in a vision at night(F) and said, “Jacob! Jacob!”
“Here I am,”(G) he replied.
3 “I am God, the God of your father,”(H) he said. “Do not be afraid(I) to go down to Egypt,(J) for I will make you into a great nation(K) there.(L) 4 I will go down to Egypt with you, and I will surely bring you back again.(M) And Joseph’s own hand will close your eyes.(N)”
5 Then Jacob left Beersheba,(O) and Israel’s(P) sons took their father Jacob and their children and their wives in the carts(Q) that Pharaoh had sent to transport him. 6 So Jacob and all his offspring went to Egypt,(R) taking with them their livestock and the possessions(S) they had acquired(T) in Canaan. 7 Jacob brought with him to Egypt(U) his sons and grandsons and his daughters and granddaughters—all his offspring.(V)
8 These are the names of the sons of Israel(W) (Jacob and his descendants) who went to Egypt:
Reuben the firstborn(X) of Jacob.
9 The sons of Reuben:(Y)

18 These were the children born to Jacob by Zilpah,(AZ) whom Laban had given to his daughter Leah(BA)—sixteen in all.
19 The sons of Jacob’s wife Rachel:(BB)
Joseph and Benjamin.(BC) 20 In Egypt, Manasseh(BD) and Ephraim(BE) were born to Joseph(BF) by Asenath daughter of Potiphera, priest of On.[e](BG)
21 The sons of Benjamin:(BH)
Bela, Beker, Ashbel, Gera, Naaman, Ehi, Rosh, Muppim, Huppim and Ard.(BI)
22 These were the sons of Rachel(BJ) who were born to Jacob—fourteen in all.
25 These were the sons born to Jacob by Bilhah,(BN) whom Laban had given to his daughter Rachel(BO)—seven in all.
26 All those who went to Egypt with Jacob—those who were his direct descendants, not counting his sons’ wives—numbered sixty-six persons.(BP) 27 With the two sons[f] who had been born to Joseph in Egypt,(BQ) the members of Jacob’s family, which went to Egypt, were seventy[g] in all.(BR)
28 Now Jacob sent Judah(BS) ahead of him to Joseph to get directions to Goshen.(BT) When they arrived in the region of Goshen, 29 Joseph had his chariot(BU) made ready and went to Goshen to meet his father Israel.(BV) As soon as Joseph appeared before him, he threw his arms around his father[h] and wept(BW) for a long time.(BX)
30 Israel(BY) said to Joseph, “Now I am ready to die, since I have seen for myself that you are still alive.”(BZ)
31 Then Joseph said to his brothers and to his father’s household, “I will go up and speak to Pharaoh and will say to him, ‘My brothers and my father’s household, who were living in the land of Canaan,(CA) have come to me.(CB) 32 The men are shepherds;(CC) they tend livestock,(CD) and they have brought along their flocks and herds and everything they own.’(CE) 33 When Pharaoh calls you in and asks, ‘What is your occupation?’(CF) 34 you should answer, ‘Your servants(CG) have tended livestock from our boyhood on, just as our fathers did.’(CH) Then you will be allowed to settle(CI) in the region of Goshen,(CJ) for all shepherds are detestable to the Egyptians.(CK)”
47 Joseph went and told Pharaoh, “My father and brothers, with their flocks and herds and everything they own, have come from the land of Canaan(CL) and are now in Goshen.”(CM) 2 He chose five of his brothers and presented them(CN) before Pharaoh.
3 Pharaoh asked the brothers, “What is your occupation?”(CO)
“Your servants(CP) are shepherds,(CQ)” they replied to Pharaoh, “just as our fathers were.” 4 They also said to him, “We have come to live here for a while,(CR) because the famine is severe in Canaan(CS) and your servants’ flocks have no pasture.(CT) So now, please let your servants settle in Goshen.”(CU)
5 Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Your father and your brothers have come to you, 6 and the land of Egypt is before you; settle(CV) your father and your brothers in the best part of the land.(CW) Let them live in Goshen. And if you know of any among them with special ability,(CX) put them in charge of my own livestock.(CY)”
7 Then Joseph brought his father Jacob in and presented him(CZ) before Pharaoh. After Jacob blessed[i] Pharaoh,(DA) 8 Pharaoh asked him, “How old are you?”
9 And Jacob said to Pharaoh, “The years of my pilgrimage are a hundred and thirty.(DB) My years have been few and difficult,(DC) and they do not equal the years of the pilgrimage of my fathers.(DD)” 10 Then Jacob blessed[j] Pharaoh(DE) and went out from his presence.
11 So Joseph settled his father and his brothers in Egypt and gave them property in the best part of the land,(DF) the district of Rameses,(DG) as Pharaoh directed. 12 Joseph also provided his father and his brothers and all his father’s household with food, according to the number of their children.(DH)
Joseph and the Famine
13 There was no food, however, in the whole region because the famine was severe; both Egypt and Canaan wasted away because of the famine.(DI) 14 Joseph collected all the money that was to be found in Egypt and Canaan in payment for the grain they were buying,(DJ) and he brought it to Pharaoh’s palace.(DK) 15 When the money of the people of Egypt and Canaan was gone,(DL) all Egypt came to Joseph(DM) and said, “Give us food. Why should we die before your eyes?(DN) Our money is all gone.”
16 “Then bring your livestock,(DO)” said Joseph. “I will sell you food in exchange for your livestock, since your money is gone.(DP)” 17 So they brought their livestock to Joseph, and he gave them food in exchange for their horses,(DQ) their sheep and goats, their cattle and donkeys.(DR) And he brought them through that year with food in exchange for all their livestock.
18 When that year was over, they came to him the following year and said, “We cannot hide from our lord the fact that since our money is gone(DS) and our livestock belongs to you,(DT) there is nothing left for our lord except our bodies and our land. 19 Why should we perish before your eyes(DU)—we and our land as well? Buy us and our land in exchange for food,(DV) and we with our land will be in bondage to Pharaoh.(DW) Give us seed so that we may live and not die,(DX) and that the land may not become desolate.”
20 So Joseph bought all the land in Egypt for Pharaoh. The Egyptians, one and all, sold their fields, because the famine was too severe(DY) for them. The land became Pharaoh’s, 21 and Joseph reduced the people to servitude,[k](DZ) from one end of Egypt to the other. 22 However, he did not buy the land of the priests,(EA) because they received a regular allotment from Pharaoh and had food enough from the allotment(EB) Pharaoh gave them. That is why they did not sell their land.
23 Joseph said to the people, “Now that I have bought you and your land today for Pharaoh, here is seed(EC) for you so you can plant the ground.(ED) 24 But when the crop comes in, give a fifth(EE) of it to Pharaoh. The other four-fifths you may keep as seed for the fields and as food for yourselves and your households and your children.”
25 “You have saved our lives,” they said. “May we find favor in the eyes of our lord;(EF) we will be in bondage to Pharaoh.”(EG)
26 So Joseph established it as a law concerning land in Egypt—still in force today—that a fifth(EH) of the produce belongs to Pharaoh. It was only the land of the priests that did not become Pharaoh’s.(EI)
27 Now the Israelites settled in Egypt in the region of Goshen.(EJ) They acquired property there(EK) and were fruitful and increased greatly in number.(EL)
28 Jacob lived in Egypt(EM) seventeen years, and the years of his life were a hundred and forty-seven.(EN) 29 When the time drew near for Israel(EO) to die,(EP) he called for his son Joseph and said to him, “If I have found favor in your eyes,(EQ) put your hand under my thigh(ER) and promise that you will show me kindness(ES) and faithfulness.(ET) Do not bury me in Egypt, 30 but when I rest with my fathers,(EU) carry me out of Egypt and bury me where they are buried.”(EV)
“I will do as you say,” he said.
31 “Swear to me,”(EW) he said. Then Joseph swore to him,(EX) and Israel(EY) worshiped as he leaned on the top of his staff.[l](EZ)
Manasseh and Ephraim
48 Some time later Joseph was told, “Your father is ill.” So he took his two sons Manasseh and Ephraim(FA) along with him. 2 When Jacob was told, “Your son Joseph has come to you,” Israel(FB) rallied his strength and sat up on the bed.
3 Jacob said to Joseph, “God Almighty[m](FC) appeared to me at Luz(FD) in the land of Canaan, and there he blessed me(FE) 4 and said to me, ‘I am going to make you fruitful and increase your numbers.(FF) I will make you a community of peoples, and I will give this land(FG) as an everlasting possession to your descendants after you.’(FH)
5 “Now then, your two sons born to you in Egypt(FI) before I came to you here will be reckoned as mine; Ephraim and Manasseh will be mine,(FJ) just as Reuben(FK) and Simeon(FL) are mine. 6 Any children born to you after them will be yours; in the territory they inherit they will be reckoned under the names of their brothers. 7 As I was returning from Paddan,[n](FM) to my sorrow(FN) Rachel died in the land of Canaan while we were still on the way, a little distance from Ephrath. So I buried her there beside the road to Ephrath” (that is, Bethlehem).(FO)
8 When Israel(FP) saw the sons of Joseph,(FQ) he asked, “Who are these?”
9 “They are the sons God has given me here,”(FR) Joseph said to his father.
Then Israel said, “Bring them to me so I may bless(FS) them.”
10 Now Israel’s eyes were failing because of old age, and he could hardly see.(FT) So Joseph brought his sons close to him, and his father kissed them(FU) and embraced them.(FV)
11 Israel(FW) said to Joseph, “I never expected to see your face again,(FX) and now God has allowed me to see your children too.”(FY)
12 Then Joseph removed them from Israel’s knees(FZ) and bowed down with his face to the ground.(GA) 13 And Joseph took both of them, Ephraim on his right toward Israel’s left hand and Manasseh on his left toward Israel’s right hand,(GB) and brought them close to him. 14 But Israel(GC) reached out his right hand and put it on Ephraim’s head,(GD) though he was the younger,(GE) and crossing his arms, he put his left hand on Manasseh’s head, even though Manasseh was the firstborn.(GF)
15 Then he blessed(GG) Joseph and said,
“May the God before whom my fathers
Abraham and Isaac walked faithfully,(GH)
the God who has been my shepherd(GI)
all my life to this day,
16 the Angel(GJ) who has delivered me from all harm(GK)
—may he bless(GL) these boys.(GM)
May they be called by my name
and the names of my fathers Abraham and Isaac,(GN)
and may they increase greatly
on the earth.”(GO)
17 When Joseph saw his father placing his right hand(GP) on Ephraim’s head(GQ) he was displeased; so he took hold of his father’s hand to move it from Ephraim’s head to Manasseh’s head. 18 Joseph said to him, “No, my father, this one is the firstborn; put your right hand on his head.”(GR)
19 But his father refused and said, “I know, my son, I know. He too will become a people, and he too will become great.(GS) Nevertheless, his younger brother will be greater than he,(GT) and his descendants will become a group of nations.(GU)” 20 He blessed(GV) them that day(GW) and said,
“In your[o] name will Israel(GX) pronounce this blessing:(GY)
‘May God make you like Ephraim(GZ) and Manasseh.(HA)’”
So he put Ephraim ahead of Manasseh.
21 Then Israel said to Joseph, “I am about to die, but God will be with you[p](HB) and take you[q] back to the land of your[r] fathers.(HC) 22 And to you I give one more ridge of land[s](HD) than to your brothers,(HE) the ridge I took from the Amorites with my sword(HF) and my bow.”
Jacob Blesses His Sons(HG)
49 Then Jacob called for his sons and said: “Gather around so I can tell you what will happen to you in days to come.(HH)
3 “Reuben, you are my firstborn,(HK)
my might, the first sign of my strength,(HL)
excelling in honor,(HM) excelling in power.
4 Turbulent as the waters,(HN) you will no longer excel,
for you went up onto your father’s bed,
onto my couch and defiled it.(HO)
5 “Simeon(HP) and Levi(HQ) are brothers—
their swords[t] are weapons of violence.(HR)
6 Let me not enter their council,
let me not join their assembly,(HS)
for they have killed men in their anger(HT)
and hamstrung(HU) oxen as they pleased.
7 Cursed be their anger, so fierce,
and their fury,(HV) so cruel!(HW)
I will scatter them in Jacob
and disperse them in Israel.(HX)
8 “Judah,[u](HY) your brothers will praise you;
your hand will be on the neck(HZ) of your enemies;
your father’s sons will bow down to you.(IA)
9 You are a lion’s(IB) cub,(IC) Judah;(ID)
you return from the prey,(IE) my son.
Like a lion he crouches and lies down,
like a lioness—who dares to rouse him?
10 The scepter will not depart from Judah,(IF)
nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet,[v]
until he to whom it belongs[w] shall come(IG)
and the obedience of the nations shall be his.(IH)
11 He will tether his donkey(II) to a vine,
his colt to the choicest branch;(IJ)
he will wash his garments in wine,
his robes in the blood of grapes.(IK)
12 His eyes will be darker than wine,
his teeth whiter than milk.[x](IL)
13 “Zebulun(IM) will live by the seashore
and become a haven for ships;
his border will extend toward Sidon.(IN)
14 “Issachar(IO) is a rawboned[y] donkey
lying down among the sheep pens.[z](IP)
15 When he sees how good is his resting place
and how pleasant is his land,(IQ)
he will bend his shoulder to the burden(IR)
and submit to forced labor.(IS)
16 “Dan[aa](IT) will provide justice for his people
as one of the tribes of Israel.(IU)
17 Dan(IV) will be a snake by the roadside,
a viper along the path,(IW)
that bites the horse’s heels(IX)
so that its rider tumbles backward.
22 “Joseph(JH) is a fruitful vine,(JI)
a fruitful vine near a spring,

23 With bitterness archers attacked him;(JK)
they shot at him with hostility.(JL)
24 But his bow remained steady,(JM)

Let all these rest on the head of Joseph,(JY)
on the brow of the prince among[ah] his brothers.(JZ)
27 “Benjamin(KA) is a ravenous wolf;(KB)
in the morning he devours the prey,(KC)
in the evening he divides the plunder.”(KD)
28 All these are the twelve tribes of Israel,(KE) and this is what their father said to them when he blessed them, giving each the blessing(KF) appropriate to him.
The Death of Jacob
29 Then he gave them these instructions:(KG) “I am about to be gathered to my people.(KH) Bury me with my fathers(KI) in the cave in the field of Ephron the Hittite,(KJ) 30 the cave in the field of Machpelah,(KK) near Mamre(KL) in Canaan, which Abraham bought along with the field(KM) as a burial place(KN) from Ephron the Hittite. 31 There Abraham(KO) and his wife Sarah(KP) were buried, there Isaac and his wife Rebekah(KQ) were buried, and there I buried Leah.(KR) 32 The field and the cave in it were bought from the Hittites.[ai](KS)”
33 When Jacob had finished giving instructions to his sons, he drew his feet up into the bed, breathed his last and was gathered to his people.(KT)
50 Joseph threw himself on his father and wept over him and kissed him.(KU) 2 Then Joseph directed the physicians in his service to embalm his father Israel. So the physicians embalmed him,(KV) 3 taking a full forty days, for that was the time required for embalming. And the Egyptians mourned for him seventy days.(KW)
4 When the days of mourning(KX) had passed, Joseph said to Pharaoh’s court,(KY) “If I have found favor in your eyes,(KZ) speak to Pharaoh for me. Tell him, 5 ‘My father made me swear an oath(LA) and said, “I am about to die;(LB) bury me in the tomb I dug for myself(LC) in the land of Canaan.”(LD) Now let me go up and bury my father;(LE) then I will return.’”
6 Pharaoh said, “Go up and bury your father, as he made you swear to do.”
7 So Joseph went up to bury his father. All Pharaoh’s officials(LF) accompanied him—the dignitaries of his court(LG) and all the dignitaries of Egypt— 8 besides all the members of Joseph’s household and his brothers and those belonging to his father’s household.(LH) Only their children and their flocks and herds were left in Goshen.(LI) 9 Chariots(LJ) and horsemen[aj] also went up with him. It was a very large company.
10 When they reached the threshing floor(LK) of Atad, near the Jordan, they lamented loudly and bitterly;(LL) and there Joseph observed a seven-day period(LM) of mourning(LN) for his father.(LO) 11 When the Canaanites(LP) who lived there saw the mourning at the threshing floor of Atad, they said, “The Egyptians are holding a solemn ceremony of mourning.”(LQ) That is why that place near the Jordan is called Abel Mizraim.[ak]
12 So Jacob’s sons did as he had commanded them:(LR) 13 They carried him to the land of Canaan and buried him in the cave in the field of Machpelah,(LS) near Mamre,(LT) which Abraham had bought along with the field(LU) as a burial place from Ephron the Hittite.(LV) 14 After burying his father, Joseph returned to Egypt, together with his brothers and all the others who had gone with him to bury his father.(LW)
Joseph Reassures His Brothers
15 When Joseph’s brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, “What if Joseph holds a grudge(LX) against us and pays us back for all the wrongs we did to him?”(LY) 16 So they sent word to Joseph, saying, “Your father left these instructions(LZ) before he died: 17 ‘This is what you are to say to Joseph: I ask you to forgive your brothers the sins(MA) and the wrongs they committed in treating you so badly.’(MB) Now please forgive the sins of the servants of the God of your father.(MC)” When their message came to him, Joseph wept.(MD)
18 His brothers then came and threw themselves down before him.(ME) “We are your slaves,”(MF) they said.
19 But Joseph said to them, “Don’t be afraid. Am I in the place of God?(MG) 20 You intended to harm me,(MH) but God intended(MI) it for good(MJ) to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.(MK) 21 So then, don’t be afraid. I will provide for you and your children.(ML)” And he reassured them and spoke kindly(MM) to them.
The Death of Joseph
22 Joseph stayed in Egypt, along with all his father’s family. He lived a hundred and ten years(MN) 23 and saw the third generation(MO) of Ephraim’s(MP) children.(MQ) Also the children of Makir(MR) son of Manasseh(MS) were placed at birth on Joseph’s knees.[al](MT)
24 Then Joseph said to his brothers, “I am about to die.(MU) But God will surely come to your aid(MV) and take you up out of this land to the land(MW) he promised on oath to Abraham,(MX) Isaac(MY) and Jacob.”(MZ) 25 And Joseph made the Israelites swear an oath(NA) and said, “God will surely come to your aid, and then you must carry my bones(NB) up from this place.”(NC)
26 So Joseph died(ND) at the age of a hundred and ten.(NE) And after they embalmed him,(NF) he was placed in a coffin in Egypt.
