13 For you were called to freedom, brothers. (A)Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love (B)serve one another. 14 For (C)the whole law is fulfilled in one word: (D)“You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” 15 But if you (E)bite and devour one another, watch out that you are not consumed by one another.

Keep in Step with the Spirit

16 But I say, (F)walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify (G)the desires of the flesh. 17 For (H)the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, (I)to keep you from doing the things you want to do. 18 But if you are (J)led by the Spirit, (K)you are not under the law. 19 Now (L)the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, 20 idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, (M)divisions, 21 envy,[a] drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that (N)those who do[b] such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. 22 But (O)the fruit of the Spirit is (P)love, joy, peace, patience, (Q)kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 (R)gentleness, (S)self-control; (T)against such things there is no law. 24 And those who belong to Christ Jesus (U)have crucified the flesh with its (V)passions and desires.

25 If we live by the Spirit, (W)let us also keep in step with the Spirit. 26 (X)Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.

Bear One Another's Burdens

Brothers,[c] (Y)if anyone is caught in any transgression, (Z)you who are spiritual should restore him in (AA)a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted. (AB)Bear one another's burdens, and (AC)so fulfill (AD)the law of Christ. For (AE)if anyone thinks he is something, (AF)when he is nothing, he deceives himself. But let each one (AG)test his own work, and then his reason to boast will be in himself alone and not in his neighbor. For (AH)each will have to bear his own load.

(AI)Let the one who is taught the word share all good things with the one who teaches. (AJ)Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for (AK)whatever one sows, that will he also reap. For (AL)the one who sows to his own flesh (AM)will from the flesh reap corruption, but (AN)the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life. And (AO)let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, (AP)if we do not give up. 10 So then, (AQ)as we have opportunity, let us (AR)do good to everyone, and especially to those who are (AS)of the household of faith.

Life by the Spirit

13 You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free.(A) But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh[a];(B) rather, serve one another(C) humbly in love. 14 For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”[b](D) 15 If you bite and devour each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other.

16 So I say, walk by the Spirit,(E) and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.(F) 17 For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh.(G) They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever[c] you want.(H) 18 But if you are led by the Spirit,(I) you are not under the law.(J)

19 The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality,(K) impurity and debauchery; 20 idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21 and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like.(L) I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.(M)

22 But the fruit(N) of the Spirit is love,(O) joy, peace,(P) forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control.(Q) Against such things there is no law.(R) 24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh(S) with its passions and desires.(T) 25 Since we live by the Spirit,(U) let us keep in step with the Spirit. 26 Let us not become conceited,(V) provoking and envying each other.

Doing Good to All

Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit(W) should restore(X) that person gently. But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted. Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.(Y) If anyone thinks they are something(Z) when they are not, they deceive themselves.(AA) Each one should test their own actions. Then they can take pride in themselves alone,(AB) without comparing themselves to someone else,(AC) for each one should carry their own load.(AD) Nevertheless, the one who receives instruction in the word should share all good things with their instructor.(AE)

Do not be deceived:(AF) God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows.(AG) Whoever sows to please their flesh,(AH) from the flesh will reap destruction;(AI) whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life.(AJ) Let us not become weary in doing good,(AK) for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.(AL) 10 Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good(AM) to all people, especially to those who belong to the family(AN) of believers.

Footnotes

  1. Galatians 5:13 In contexts like this, the Greek word for flesh (sarx) refers to the sinful state of human beings, often presented as a power in opposition to the Spirit; also in verses 16, 17, 19 and 24; and in 6:8.
  2. Galatians 5:14 Lev. 19:18
  3. Galatians 5:17 Or you do not do what

13 For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another.

14 For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

15 But if ye bite and devour one another, take heed that ye be not consumed one of another.

16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.

17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.

18 But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.

19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,

20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,

21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,

23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

24 And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.

25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.

26 Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another.

Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted.

Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.

For if a man think himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceiveth himself.

But let every man prove his own work, and then shall he have rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another.

For every man shall bear his own burden.

Let him that is taught in the word communicate unto him that teacheth in all good things.

Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.

For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.

And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.

10 As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.
