¹⁹ For through the law I ^(A)died to the law, so that I might ^(B)live to God.

⁴ Likewise, my brothers, ^(A)you also have died ^(B)to the law ^(C)through the body of Christ, so that you may belong to another, to him who has been raised from the dead, ^(D)in order that we may bear fruit for God.

¹¹ So you also must consider yourselves ^(A)dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.

² By no means! How can ^(A)we who died to sin still live in it?

¹⁹ Now we know that whatever ^(A)the law says it speaks to those who are under the law, ^(B)so that every mouth may be stopped, and ^(C)the whole world may be held accountable to God. ²⁰ For ^(D)by works of the law no human being^[a] will be justified in his sight, since ^(E)through the law comes knowledge of sin.

^10 (A)who died for us so that whether we are awake or asleep we might live with him.

¹⁵ and he died for all, ^(A)that those who live might no longer live for themselves but ^(B)for him who for their sake died and was raised.

⁷ For ^(A)none of us lives to himself, and none of us dies to himself. ⁸ For if we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord. So then, ^(B)whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord's.

⁶ But now we are released from the law, having died to that which held us captive, so that we serve in the ^(A)new way of ^(B)the Spirit and not in the old way of the written code.^[a]

The Law and Sin

⁷ What then shall we say? That the law is sin? By no means! Yet if it had not been for the law, ^(C)I would not have known sin. For I would not have known what it is to covet if ^(D)the law had not said, “You shall not covet.” ⁸ But sin, ^(E)seizing an opportunity through the commandment, produced in me all kinds of covetousness. ^(F)For apart from the law, sin lies dead. ⁹ I was once alive apart from the law, but when the commandment came, sin came alive and I died. ¹⁰ The very commandment ^(G)that promised life proved to be death to me. ¹¹ For sin, ^(H)seizing an opportunity through the commandment, ^(I)deceived me and through it killed me.
